The Best Recirculating Range Hood Removes Odour but Not Heat

Only two of the ten products below are designed as recirculating hoods. Seven are ducted hoods that can be converted, and the tenth is a packet of carbon filters.

That distinction is the whole purchase. A convertible hood arrives set up to vent outside; recirculating is a fallback mode that requires a charcoal filter, and on most of these that filter is sold separately. COSMO says so plainly in its listing. Two COMFEE’ hoods include one. The rest leave you to work it out.

There is a more fundamental point that no listing on this page states. A recirculating hood removes grease and odour. It does not remove heat, and it does not remove moisture. The air passes through a mesh filter, then a carbon filter, then straight back into your kitchen at very nearly the temperature and humidity it left. Ducted extraction takes all three outside. Recirculating takes one and a half.

That is not a reason to avoid one — if you rent, or live in a flat with no external wall, or cannot cut a hole, recirculating is the only option there is. It is a reason to know what you are getting.

Type is classified from each listing’s own description: two are stated as non-ducted or ductless, seven as ducted or ducted/ductless convertible, and one is a filter set with no hood. CFM figures are ducted ratings. Recirculating airflow is always lower, because the air must additionally pass through a dense carbon filter; no manufacturer here publishes a separate recirculating figure. Noise is quoted as each maker states it — two in decibels, one in sones — and the decibel figures are qualified by ducting type in one case. Two ways to end up with a recirculating hood, and they are not equivalent.

What to Check Before You Buy

Recirculating Does Not Remove Heat or Moisture

This is the thing to understand before anything else, and no listing on this page states it. A ducted hood expels air from the building, taking grease, odour, heat and water vapour with it. A recirculating hood pulls air through a grease filter and a carbon filter and returns it to the room at essentially the same temperature and humidity. The kitchen still gets hot, the windows still steam up, and a pan of boiling pasta still puts the same litre of water into the air. What you get is meaningfully less grease on the cabinets and meaningfully less smell. That is worth having; it is half of what ducted extraction does.

Convertible Means the Filter Is Extra

Seven of the ten hoods here are sold as ducted or ducted/ductless convertible, and convertible is doing a lot of work in that phrase. It means the hood has a top or rear outlet and a housing that will accept a carbon filter — not that the filter is in the box. COSMO states plainly that the charcoal filter is sold separately; two COMFEE’ hoods include one; most say nothing either way, which in practice means it is not included. Before ordering, search the listing text for the word carbon or charcoal and see whether it appears in the contents or only in the description.

Budget for the Filters, Repeatedly

Activated carbon works by adsorption: odour molecules stick to an enormous internal surface area until that surface is saturated, at which point the filter stops removing odour and becomes purely an airflow restriction. Manufacturers generally suggest replacement every three to six months with regular cooking. At around seven and a half dollars a filter that is fifteen to thirty dollars a year for as long as you own the hood — not a large sum, and it is a cost a ducted hood does not have at all, since a metal grease filter simply goes in the dishwasher.

The CFM Figure Is a Ducted Rating

Every airflow number on this page describes the hood venting freely to outside. Recirculating adds a dense carbon filter to the airflow path, which imposes a substantial pressure drop, and none of these manufacturers publishes a separate recirculating figure. The practical consequence is that a hood rated 230 CFM ducted will move noticeably less than that recirculating, and a hood rated 580 CFM with a carbon kit fitted will not deliver 580. Check Depth Before Width

An under-cabinet hood has to fit an existing gap, and the dimension people forget is depth. Two hoods here publish full dimensions and they differ substantially: 17.5 inches deep against 19.75. That two-inch difference decides whether the hood sits flush with your cabinet fronts or protrudes into the room at head height above a hob. Height matters too, since it eats into the clearance between the hood and the cooktop, which manufacturers typically specify as at least 18 inches. Look for a Noise Figure, in Whatever Unit

A hood you find unpleasant to run is a hood you switch off, at which point its airflow rating is irrelevant. Baffle Filters Beat Mesh, Especially Recirculating

A mesh filter is a fine aluminium screen that traps grease as air weaves through it. A baffle filter is a set of angled steel vanes that force the air to change direction sharply, throwing grease droplets out by inertia. Baffles capture more grease and, crucially, restrict airflow far less as they load up — a clogging mesh filter chokes the hood, while a baffle keeps flowing. On a recirculating installation, where a carbon filter is already costing you airflow, starting with the better grease filter matters more than it would on a ducted hood.
