Supermarket Bags Fit Just Two Best Kitchen Trash Cans on Paper

Every kitchen trash can listing leads with the size, and on this page it barely moves. Eight of the ten cans hold 13 gallons or 50 litres, which are the same size give or take a fraction: 50 litres is about 13.2 gallons, by our arithmetic. The thing you live with every week is the bag, so we read every listing for one plain promise: will an ordinary 13-gallon supermarket bag fit?

Two listings say yes in so many words. BestOffice says its can “Fits standard 13-gallon trash bags from any supermarket”, and KdbK says the regular 13-gallon supermarket bag can be used in its can. Three more point to a code instead. The remaining five, including the best-selling Glad, do not say what bag to use at all.

So this guide sorts the ten by what each listing says about the bag, then counts the rest of the checklist against it. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup; popularity below is Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank only. Our under-sink organizer roundup covers the cupboard below, where many kitchens keep spare bags.

Best Sellers Ranks and specifications are taken from each manufacturer’s Amazon listing as displayed on 5 October 2026 through a United States connection, and may change. Bag fit is quoted as each listing words it. “Code K” appears on both the simplehuman and the fluted SONGMICS; neither listing says whether the two brands’ code K bags are interchangeable. SIMPLI-MAGIC says its can fits most brands and also names its own 8-gallon code B bag for a 13.2-gallon can, without explaining the gap. Capacities are as listed; 50 L is about 13.2 gallons and 40 L about 10.6 gallons by our arithmetic. Sensor batteries are not included on the BestOffice or Ninestars; the EKO listing does not say how many AA cells it takes or whether they are included. The BestOffice and KdbK give a height smaller than their length, which looks like swapped fields for a 13-gallon can; both figures are reported in the detail cards. Weights for the simplehuman, fluted SONGMICS and EKO are rounded here from the listed 6.172943336, 12.566348934 and 8.81849048 pounds. Ranks are overall Best Sellers Ranks as returned on 5 October 2026; the EKO’s category rank is in In-Home Recycling Bins, not Kitchen Trash Cans. Eight cans were sold by Amazon.com at capture; the Glad by Spreetail and the KdbK by jinnuokai. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for any product here.

How We Chose These Ten

We researched current listings, compared manufacturer specifications and documentation, and read each listing’s claims about its lid, its bucket, its bags and its warranty line by line. We did not carry out hands-on testing, and nothing below is presented as measured performance data. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup. We used Amazon Best Sellers Rank, buy-box stock and listing specifications instead, and nothing on this page describes or implies how owners have scored these cans.

  • Kitchen-size cans only — every product here is a lidded floor-standing can sold for kitchen use, from 40 litres to 13.2 gallons. Under-sink pull-outs, open bins without lids and multi-compartment recycling stations were not in the running.
  • A nine-point checklist — for each listing we logged capacity, opening type, soft-close lid, odour control, inner bucket, fingerprint claim, bag fit, sensor power and warranty. Each is marked as stated, partly stated or not stated, in the listing’s own words.
  • Bag fit recorded exactly as printed — a promise that standard supermarket bags fit is recorded as that; a bag code is recorded as a code; a vague “fits most brands” is recorded as vague. Where a listing says nothing about bags, we say nothing on its behalf.
  • Model numbers compared — two SONGMICS cans made the list, so we compared their model numbers, ULTB586BZ01 and ULTB050W01, and their dimensions and weights. They are different models, not one can listed twice.
  • Conflicting fields reported, not resolved — where a listing’s height, length and width do not fit together, we print them as given and say what looks wrong. Where a bullet contradicts another bullet, we report both.
  • Conversions labelled — litres to gallons, footprints and widths compared across listings are our arithmetic, using 3.785 litres to the US gallon, and are labelled wherever they appear.
  • Popularity from Best Sellers Rank only — ranks are quoted exactly as returned on 5 October 2026, overall and in the category Amazon assigned. Nine of the ten rank in Kitchen Trash Cans; the EKO ranks in In-Home Recycling Bins.
  • Verified stock and seller — each product was the buy-box offer and in stock on amazon.com on 5 October 2026.

Eight of ten hold about 50 litres, so the size on the label barely separates them.

The Ten Kitchen Trash Cans in Detail

1. KdbK 13 Gallon Trash Can with Lid, 50L Fingerprint Proof Stainless Steel, Removable Inner Bucket, Soft Close — Best Overall

Brushed silver rectangular step trash can with a black lid trim, a black base and a foot pedal at the front

The one pedal can that answers the bag question in plain words, and ticks most of the rest of the list too.

Why We Recommend It

This is the listing that tells you what to buy next week. The second bullet is headed “Comes with 20 garbage bags”, and then it goes further than the starter pack: “The regular 13-gallon garbage bag in the supermarket can be used in our stainless steel trash can.” Only one other listing on the page, the BestOffice, makes that promise in words. For a can you will empty several hundred times, a bag you can buy anywhere matters more than almost anything else on the spec sheet.

The bucket is built around the bag. The fourth bullet describes a “Sturdy Removable Inner bucket” in ABS, and adds: “There is a small hole in the inner bucket to fix the garbage bag.” That hole is how you tuck the bag’s edge to stop it sliding down when it fills. Four cans here describe a removable inner bucket; the KdbK is the only one of the four that pairs it with a plain-supermarket-bag promise.

The lid is described in more detail than any other on the page. “The built-in bi-force damper enables both automatic and manual closing for ultimate convenience: it gently pulls the lid shut at a controlled slow pace (avoids pinching hands with its anti-slamming design), while the 90° stand-up feature lets it stay open hands-free for kitchen chores.” So it closes slowly by itself, stays up when pushed past 90°, and can be pressed shut without a bang. Seven listings here describe a slow or soft close; this is the one that explains how it works.

It makes the boldest durability claim, and it is a claim. The first bullet says the “Pedal tested 200,000 times, service life over 25 years.” No test standard or test house is named, and no warranty term backs the 25 years. The closing bullet offers “a 100% satisfactory reply” if there is a quality problem, which is a service promise, not a warranty. Read the pedal figure as the brand’s target, and keep the order details in case you need that reply.

Two numbers in the spec table need care. It lists the can as 16.7 inches high, 26.4 inches long and 14.1 inches wide. A 50-litre can that is longer than it is tall would be unusual, and the title calls it a kitchen trash can with a pedal, so the likeliest reading is that height and length have been swapped and the can stands about 26.4 inches tall. The listing does not confirm it. No weight is listed at all. If it is going under a worktop overhang, measure for 26.4 inches of height to be safe.

What to weigh. It ranks #3,103 overall and #9 in Kitchen Trash Cans, and it is sold by jinnuokai, one of only two cans here not sold by Amazon.com. Brushed stainless with an “ABS handle and base, anti-slip design”. No odour control is described. Against the field, it states six of the nine checklist items outright, and it is the only pedal can whose listing tells you a supermarket bag will do.

Pros

  • Supermarket 13-gallon bags named in writing
  • 20 bags included
  • Removable ABS inner bucket with bag hole
  • Bi-force soft-close damper; stays open at 90°
  • Fingerprint-proof claim on brushed steel
  • Pedal tested 200,000 times, claimed

Cons

  • No warranty term stated
  • Sold by a third-party seller
  • No odour control described
  • Height and length fields look swapped
  • No weight listed
  • Test standard for the pedal claim not named

Best for: A buyer who wants a stainless pedal can with a soft lid and an inner bucket, and wants to keep buying ordinary 13-gallon bags.

2. BestOffice 13 Gallon Stainless Steel Trash Can with Lid, Automatic Sensor — Best Touchless for Store Bags

Oval stainless steel trash can with a sloping black sensor lid on a plain floor

The only touchless can that tells you an ordinary supermarket bag fits it.

Key Specifications

Capacity 13 gallon, stated
Opening Touchless sensor lid
Soft-close lid Not stated as such; “noiseless” automatic close
Odour control None; advice to keep the lid closed
Inner bucket Not stated
Fingerprint claim Fingerprint-resistant finish, stated
Bag fit Standard 13-gallon bags from any supermarket
Sensor power 4 C batteries, not included; 40,000+ openings claimed
Warranty Not stated
Dimensions and weight 17.0 in high, 23.0 in long, 13.0 in wide as listed; 8.0 lb
Model and seller TC-1350R; sold by Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #2,855 overall; #8 in Kitchen Trash Cans

Why We Recommend It

Of the three sensor cans, this is the one that answers the bag question. The fifth bullet is headed “LARGE CAPACITY & CLEAR GUIDANCE” and says the can “Fits standard 13-gallon trash bags from any supermarket.” Ninestars and EKO, the other two touchless cans, say nothing about what bag to use. If you want hands-free opening without committing to a proprietary liner, this listing is the one that commits to the plain bag.

The power is stated in full, and it is more batteries than the rival. “POWERED BY 4 C BATTERIES (NOT INCLUDED) – Uses 4× C-cell batteries for long performance: Supports 40,000+ openings for long-lasting use.” Ninestars runs on 3 C cells. BestOffice gives its battery life in openings rather than months, which is more useful if your kitchen is busy: at 40 openings a day, 40,000 openings is about 1,000 days, by our arithmetic, though that figure is the brand’s claim and depends on the cells you fit. It recommends alkaline batteries and tells you to switch the can on before use.

It does not claim any odour control, and it says so honestly. The fourth bullet is headed “ODOR CONTROL & EASY CARE”, but what follows is advice: “Keep the lid closed to minimize odor.” There is no filter, seal or treated lid. A sensor lid that closes by itself does keep the lid shut more of the time than an open-top bin, so the advice is sound, but it is not a feature. Ninestars and Glad describe a treated or sealed lid; SIMPLI-MAGIC describes a filter holder.

The dimensions do not add up as printed. The spec table says 17.0 inches high, 23.0 inches long and 13.0 inches wide. A 13-gallon can is normally taller than it is long, and the fifth bullet promises “Accurate size dimensions and internal images” in the listing’s photos. The likeliest reading is that height and length are swapped and the can stands about 23 inches tall, which would make it the shortest 13-gallon can here. The listing does not confirm it, so check the images or ask before fitting it under a counter.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #2,855 overall and #8 in Kitchen Trash Cans. Stainless steel “with a fingerprint-resistant finish”, an oval body and a sloping lid. No inner bucket is mentioned, no warranty term is given, and the model field reads “13 Gallon Automatic Garbage Can” rather than a code; the part number is TC-1350R. Against the Ninestars, it trades a warranty and an odour-sealing lid for a written promise about bags.

Pros

  • Standard supermarket 13-gallon bags named
  • Touchless sensor lid
  • Battery life given in openings: 40,000+
  • Fingerprint-resistant stainless finish
  • Sold by Amazon.com
  • 8.0 lb listed

Cons

  • 4 C batteries, not included
  • No odour control beyond advice
  • Inner bucket not stated
  • No warranty term
  • Height and length fields look swapped
  • Soft close not named as such

Best for: A buyer who wants a touchless lid and refuses to be tied to a branded liner.

3. SIMPLI-MAGIC 50 Liter / 13.2 Gallon Soft-Close Trash Can with Foot Pedal and Built-in Filter — Best Odour Filter

Tall slim stainless steel step trash can with a domed lid and a metal foot pedal

The only can here with a place for an odour filter, and the most confusing bag advice on the page.

Key Specifications

Capacity 50 Liter / 13.2 Gallon, stated
Opening Metal foot pedal; stay-open lid lock
Soft-close lid Quiet-close lid, stated
Odour control Built-in odour filter holder; “No catridge included”
Inner bucket Removable plastic liner
Fingerprint claim Fingerprint-resistant stainless finish, stated
Bag fit “Most brands”; names its code B 8-gallon bags; bags sold separately
Sensor power None needed (pedal)
Warranty “Limited”, no term
Dimensions and weight 26.0 x 15.0 x 11.0 in; 15.0 lb, heaviest listed here
Model and seller 79514; sold by Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #3,762 overall; #13 in Kitchen Trash Cans

Why We Recommend It

This is the only listing on the page that builds in a filter. The title says “Built in Filter”, and the fourth bullet says “Easy to Use with Built-in Odor Filter Holder” and “Odor filter helps reduce unpleasant smells.” Of the three cans that describe any odour control, the Glad treats its lid and the Ninestars seals its lid; this one holds a filter. For a kitchen that bins food scraps, that is a real difference.

But read the second bullet before you count on it. Tucked into a paragraph about dorm rooms is “No catridge included.” The title says built-in filter, the fourth bullet describes a filter holder and says the filter helps, and the second bullet says the cartridge is not in the box. Taken together, the likeliest reading is that you get the holder and buy the filter separately. The listing does not name the filter you need, so ask before you rely on it on day one.

The bag advice contradicts itself. The third bullet is headed “13 Gallon Step Trash Can” and says the can “fits most brands of trash bags”. It then says: “Compatible with ours CODE B – SIMPLI-MAGIC 8 Gallon Drawstring Trash Bags! Trash bags sold separately.” An 8-gallon bag for a can sold as 13.2 gallons is a gap of more than five gallons, and the listing does not explain it. It may be that the inner liner holds less than the outer body suggests; it may be an error. Either way, “most brands” is not the same promise as BestOffice’s and KdbK’s plain 13-gallon supermarket bag, and we rank it below them.

The rest of the checklist is strong. A “Quiet-Close Lid” that “closes quietly and gently without slamming”. A “durable metal foot pedal”, where several rivals do not say what the pedal is made of. A “fingerprint-resistant stainless steel finish”. A “Removable plastic liner and stay open lid lock”. Counting the filter holder as partial, it answers every checklist item that applies to a pedal can, the only listing here that does; only the warranty is left vague, at “Limited” with no term.

It is the heaviest can listed. The spec table gives 15.0 pounds, against 12.8 and 12.57 for the two SONGMICS and 5.4 for the plastic Glad. Weight is no direct guide to quality, but a heavier body is less likely to slide when you press the pedal. At 26.0 by 15.0 by 11.0 inches, it is one of the two tallest here and among the narrowest, 11.0 inches across, which suits a gap between a counter and a wall.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #3,762 overall and #13 in Kitchen Trash Cans. Model 79514, released in February 2023 according to the listing, and “Designed in California”. Buy it for the filter holder and the full feature list, and buy it knowing you will need to source the cartridge and test which bags actually sit well.

Pros

  • Only odour filter holder on the page
  • Quiet-close lid and metal pedal
  • Removable plastic liner; stay-open lid lock
  • Fingerprint-resistant stainless finish
  • 11.0 in wide, among the narrowest
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • No filter cartridge included
  • Names an 8-gallon bag for a 13.2-gallon can
  • Warranty only “Limited”
  • Bags sold separately
  • 15.0 lb, heaviest listed
  • Lowest Kitchen Trash Cans rank of the 13-gallon cans

Best for: A buyer who bins a lot of food waste and will buy a filter cartridge to make use of the built-in holder.

4. simplehuman 40 Liter / 10.6 Gallon Slim Kitchen Step Trash Can with Secure Slide Lock — Longest Warranty

Slim black plastic step trash can with a rounded lid and a wide foot pedal

A five-year warranty, a lid lock and wheels, on a can built around its own liners.

Key Specifications

Capacity 40 Liter / 10.6 Gallon, stated
Opening Step pedal; stay-open lid
Soft-close lid Lid shox silent close, stated
Odour control Not stated
Inner bucket Not stated
Fingerprint claim None (black plastic)
Bag fit simplehuman code K custom-fit liners
Sensor power None needed (pedal)
Warranty 5-year, stated
Dimensions and weight 24.9 x 18.6 x 10.1 in; 6.17 lb
Model and seller CW1361; sold by Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #3,523 overall; #11 in Kitchen Trash Cans

Why We Recommend It

This is the longest warranty on the page by a distance. The spec table says “5-year.” Only two other listings give any term at all, Glad and Ninestars at two years each. Six of the ten say nothing, and SIMPLI-MAGIC says only “Limited”. If you judge a can by how long its maker will stand behind it, the simplehuman is alone at the top.

It is designed around its own bag, and says so. The sixth bullet: “CUSTOM FIT LINERS – simplehuman’s code K liners are designed to fit this can perfectly so they don’t slip. Extra-thick plastic and double-seam construction prevent rips and tears.” The listing does not say whether an ordinary bag fits; it does not say one does not either. A 40-litre can is about 10.6 gallons, by our arithmetic, so a standard 13-gallon bag would be roughly a fifth too big, and would likely bunch at the rim. Plan on code K liners or an equivalent sized for this can.

It is the only can here with a lock to keep the lid shut. “LOCK THE LID SHUT – A slide lock securely locks the lid to help keep pets and curious children from getting into the trash.” Several rivals have a lock that holds the lid open; this is the only one that holds it closed. In a house with a dog that raids the bin, that matters more than anything else on the checklist.

It is the smallest and one of the narrowest. At 10.1 inches wide, it is beaten for slimness only by the EKO’s 9.8. The listing calls it a “SLIM, SPACE-SAVING SHAPE – Designed to make the most of tight spaces”, and adds “BUILT-IN WHEELS”, the only can here that mentions wheels. The trade is capacity: 40 litres is about 80% of the 50 litres most of the field offers, by our arithmetic, so a busy kitchen will empty it more often.

The lid is described clearly. “SILENT CLOSE LID – simplehuman’s patented lid shox technology controls the motion of the lid for a slow, silent close.” And “STAY-OPEN LID – The lid stays open for as long as you like.” No inner bucket, odour control or fingerprint claim is mentioned. The body is black plastic, so a fingerprint claim would not apply in the way it does to steel.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #3,523 overall and #11 in Kitchen Trash Cans. The model, CW1361, has a release date of February 2008 in the listing, the oldest on the page, which suggests a long-running design. 6.17 pounds listed. Buy it for the warranty, the lock and the slim footprint, and accept that you are buying into a liner system.

Pros

  • 5-year warranty, longest here
  • Slide lock keeps the lid shut
  • Built-in wheels, the only can that lists them
  • 10.1 in wide, second narrowest
  • Lid shox silent close; stay-open lid
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • 40 L, smallest capacity here
  • Designed around code K liners
  • No inner bucket stated
  • No odour control stated
  • Plastic body
  • No word on standard bags

Best for: A small kitchen with pets or toddlers, where a slim can that locks shut and carries a five-year warranty beats extra litres.

5. SONGMICS Trash Can, 13 Gallon (50 L), Stainless Steel, Fluted, with Lid and Pedal — Best-Ranked Steel Can

Black stainless steel step trash can with vertical fluted ridges and a matching lid

The best-selling steel can on the page ships with bags, but they are code K bags.

Key Specifications

Capacity 13 Gallon (50 L), stated
Opening Foot pedal; lid stays open at 90°
Soft-close lid Yes, closes slowly and quietly
Odour control Not stated
Inner bucket Detachable inner bucket
Fingerprint claim Not stated; rust-resistant
Bag fit 15 matching code K bags included
Sensor power None needed (pedal)
Warranty Not stated
Dimensions and weight 24.6 x 15.9 x 13.2 in; 12.57 lb
Model and seller ULTB586BZ01, Ink Black; sold by Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #911 overall; #2 in Kitchen Trash Cans

Why We Recommend It

This is the best-ranked stainless can here, and second only to the plastic Glad. It sits at #911 overall and #2 in Kitchen Trash Cans. The pitch leads on looks: “The fluted design adds a touch of elegance to this trash can, making it a timeless modern piece.” The ridged body in Ink Black is the most decorative design on the page.

The bags in the box point to a code, not to the supermarket shelf. The fifth bullet: “Includes Starter Bags: With 15 matching trash bags (code K) included, you’re ready to use this kitchen trash bin right away.” Code K is also the name simplehuman gives its liners for the 40-litre slim can on this page. Neither listing says whether the two brands’ code K bags are the same size or interchangeable, and the SONGMICS does not say whether a standard 13-gallon bag fits. When the 15 run out, you will need to find out.

The lid and bucket are well covered. “Step on the pedal for hands-free use, or manually lift the lid to 90° to keep it open for longer tasks. The lid closes slowly and quietly, without disruptive noise.” And “The detachable inner bucket of this garbage can allows for swift, mess-free emptying and easy liner changes.” That puts it among the four cans with a removable bucket and the seven with a soft close.

It makes no fingerprint or odour claim. It describes “premium stainlesss steel” as “robust and rust-resistant”, but does not say it resists smudges, which six other steel cans claim. A dark fluted finish may show marks differently from brushed steel, but the listing does not say either way. There is no filter, seal or treated lid, and no warranty term.

It is not the same can as the other SONGMICS. The model number is ULTB586BZ01; the white SONGMICS further down is ULTB050W01. Both hold 50 litres, but this one is 24.6 by 15.9 by 13.2 inches and 12.57 pounds, the white one 24.9 by 17.0 by 14.6 inches and 12.8 pounds, and the descriptions differ: this one has a fluted body and starter bags, the white one a bag hole in its bucket and a smudge-free wipe claim. Two models from one brand, not one model listed twice.

What to weigh. Sold by Amazon.com, 12.57 pounds listed, 13.2 inches wide. If you want the most popular steel can and like the fluted look, this is it. Beyond capacity and opening, count it as three checklist items stated firmly, soft close, inner bucket and bags included, with the bag answer leaning on a code rather than a promise about standard sizes.

Pros

  • #911 overall, best rank of any steel can
  • 15 code K bags included
  • Soft close; lid stays open at 90°
  • Detachable inner bucket
  • Distinctive fluted design
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Standard 13-gallon bag fit not stated
  • No fingerprint claim
  • No odour control
  • No warranty term
  • 12.57 lb listed
  • Code K interchangeability not stated

Best for: A buyer who wants the best-selling stainless pedal can and a fluted look, and will source code K or test standard bags.

6. Glad Trash Can with Clorox Odor Protection, Plastic Step Bin, 13 Gal, Black — Best Budget

Black rectangular plastic step trash can with a flat lid and a foot pedal at the base

The best-selling kitchen can on Amazon says nothing about bags, but it is one of only three with a warranty term.

Key Specifications

Capacity 13 Gal, stated
Opening Step pedal
Soft-close lid Not stated
Odour control Lid with Clorox Odor Protection
Inner bucket No bucket; interior bag ring liner
Fingerprint claim None (plastic)
Bag fit Not stated
Sensor power None needed (pedal)
Warranty Two years; excludes Amazon marketplace third-party sellers
Dimensions and weight 25.0 x 14.5 x 18.0 in; 5.4 lb, lightest listed
Model and seller GLD-74130-1; sold by Spreetail
Best Sellers Rank #267 overall; #1 in Kitchen Trash Cans

Why We Recommend It

This is the most popular kitchen trash can on the page by a wide margin. It ranks #267 overall and #1 in Kitchen Trash Cans. The next best, the fluted SONGMICS, is #911 overall. It is plastic, it is the lightest can listed at 5.4 pounds, and it leads with something only two other cans here offer in any form: odour control.

The odour claim is in the lid. “Lid formulated with Clorox Odor Protection helps block and trap unwanted smells for the life of the can.” There is no filter to replace, which is the advantage over the SIMPLI-MAGIC’s cartridge holder, and the claim runs “for the life of the can”. How well a treated lid works is not something a listing can show, and we have not tested it, but it is a specific, named feature where most rivals offer nothing.

It says nothing about bags, despite a part built for them. “Interior bag ring liner secures trash bags in place while preventing bag overhang for a neat appearance.” A ring that clamps the bag is a good design for standard bags, and Glad is itself a bag brand, but the listing never says which bag size fits. The title says 13 gallon. The obvious assumption is a standard 13-gallon bag; the listing leaves it as an assumption.

The warranty is two years, with a condition that matters here. The spec table gives a full warranty paragraph: “We warrant your Glad trash can to be free of defects in material or workmanship for two years.” It then excludes “Products purchased from an unauthorized retailer, such as, but not limited to, third-party sellers on eBay, Amazon marketplace, etc.” At capture, this can was sold by Spreetail, not Amazon.com. The listing does not say whether Spreetail is an authorised retailer. If the two years matter to you, ask the seller before you buy, and keep the receipt, which the warranty requires.

It does not describe a soft close. The fourth bullet covers the pedal: “Step pedal design allows for hands-free operation, making it easy to dispose of waste without touching the lid.” Nothing about how the lid comes down. Seven rivals describe a slow or quiet close; the Glad is one of three that do not, with the two sensor cans whose lids close under power.

What to weigh. At 25.0 by 14.5 by 18.0 inches it has one of the larger footprints here, about 261 square inches by our arithmetic, so it suits an open corner rather than a narrow gap. “Durable plastic construction is lightweight, easy to clean”. The model is GLD-74130-1. For a budget can with odour control and a stated warranty, it is the clear choice, provided you confirm the seller.

Pros

  • #1 in Kitchen Trash Cans; #267 overall
  • Clorox Odor Protection lid
  • Two-year warranty stated in full
  • Bag ring stops overhang
  • 5.4 lb, lightest listed
  • Plastic wipes clean

Cons

  • Bag size not stated
  • Soft close not stated
  • Warranty excludes third-party marketplace sellers
  • Sold by Spreetail at capture
  • No inner bucket
  • Large footprint, about 261 sq in (our arithmetic)

Best for: A budget buyer who wants odour control and a stated warranty, and will confirm the seller qualifies.

7. Ninestars 13 Gallon Oval Automatic Trash Can, 50L Touchless Motion Sensor, Odor-Sealing Lid — Best Touchless

Silver stainless steel oval sensor trash can with a black lid trim against a pale wall

The sensor can with the fullest feature list, and a two-year warranty, but no word on bags.

Key Specifications

Capacity 13 gallon / 50L, stated
Opening Motion sensor plus one-touch manual mode
Soft-close lid Lid “closes softly and securely”
Odour control Odour-sealing precision-fit lid
Inner bucket No bucket; removable liner ring
Fingerprint claim Fingerprint-resistant stainless, stated
Bag fit Not stated
Sensor power 3 C batteries, not included; up to 9 months
Warranty 2 year manufacturer
Dimensions and weight 25.25 x 11.5 x 15.5 in; 7.47 lb
Model and seller DZT-50-25; sold by Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #3,679 overall; #12 in Kitchen Trash Cans

Why We Recommend It

This is the only touchless can on the page with a warranty term. The spec table says “2 year manufacturer”, and the fifth bullet promises “a friendly two-year support program”. A sensor can has electronics that a pedal can does not, so a stated warranty matters more here than anywhere else. BestOffice and EKO give none.

It names odour control, the only sensor can that does. “The precision-fit lid closes softly and securely, automatically sealing stubborn odors inside.” The title calls it an “Odor-Sealing Lid”. That is a seal, not a filter or a treated plastic, and we cannot say how tight it is, but it is a stated design feature, and the same sentence covers the soft close.

It does not fall back on batteries alone. “A quick wave opens the lid instantly, or just tap the button to keep it resting open for those bigger kitchen cleanups.” The manual mode is in the title. Power is “up to 9 months of reliable power on 3 C-batteries (not included)”, one fewer cell than the BestOffice’s four and a month longer than the EKO’s eight-month claim. Budget for batteries on day one, because none come in the box.

The bag question is left open. The fourth bullet says “a removable liner ring makes for easy bag changes and keeps messy edges completely out of sight”, which is a good sign that a standard bag will clamp under it, but the listing never names a bag size. The title says 13 gallon, so a 13-gallon bag is the natural guess; it is a guess. A liner ring is not an inner bucket, so the bag hangs in the body itself.

The oval shape is narrow from one side. The spec table lists 25.25 inches high, 11.5 inches long and 15.5 inches wide. Whichever side faces out, an 11.5-inch dimension is among the slimmest on the page, behind only the EKO’s 9.8 inches and the simplehuman’s 10.1 inches. The listing says the “wide oval opening” takes “bulky waste, while the smooth profile tucks nicely against cabinets.”

What to weigh. Sold by Amazon.com, ranked #3,679 overall and #12 in Kitchen Trash Cans, model DZT-50-25, 7.47 pounds, released in October 2020 according to the listing. It answers eight of the nine checklist items, counting the liner ring as partial, the most of any sensor can; only bag fit is missing. Pair it with a pack of standard 13-gallon bags and check the fit once; if it holds, you have the best-documented touchless can here.

Pros

  • 2 year manufacturer warranty, only sensor can with one
  • Odour-sealing lid
  • One-touch manual mode as backup
  • Up to 9 months on 3 C batteries
  • Fingerprint-resistant stainless
  • 11.5 in side, slim for a 50L can

Cons

  • Bag size not stated
  • Batteries not included
  • Liner ring, not an inner bucket
  • Sensor adds electronics to fail
  • Rank #12 in category, below several pedal cans
  • Odour seal not quantified

Best for: A buyer who wants a touchless lid with a warranty and an odour seal, and will check bag fit on the first change.

Inner bucket Inner bucket with rear bag hole
Fingerprint claim Partial: “a simple wipe can keep it clean and smudge-free”

Model and seller ULTB050W01; sold by Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #1,466 overall; #5 in Kitchen Trash Cans

Why We Recommend It

This is the only white steel can on the page. The colour field says White, and every other steel can here is silver or black. In a kitchen with white cabinets, that may decide it before anything on the checklist does. It ranks #1,466 overall and #5 in Kitchen Trash Cans, the fourth-best rank on the page.

The bucket is designed to hide the bag. “[Practical Inner Bucket] The bag hole on the back of the inner bucket lets you tuck the bag edges in to secure the bag in place and hide it from view.” That is the same idea as the KdbK’s bag-fixing hole, and it is one of four cans here with an inner bucket. What it does not do is tell you what size of bag to tuck.

The lid is well described. “[Soft Closure] The lid of the garbage can closes slowly, softly, and silently without making a loud clang.” And “Step on the pedal to open the lid when tossing the trash, or fully open it with one hand and the lid will stay open so you can also free your hands for cleaning out the fridge.” Soft close and stay-open, both stated.

Its fingerprint claim is softer than most. “The recycle bin made of stainless steel resists rust; a simple wipe can keep it clean and smudge-free.” That says it is easy to wipe, not that it resists marks in the first place, which is what EKO, BestOffice, KdbK, Ninestars, SIMPLI-MAGIC and Rubbermaid claim. We mark it as partial.

It is not a colour option of the fluted SONGMICS. Its model number is ULTB050W01, against ULTB586BZ01 for the fluted can. It is wider, 17.0 by 14.6 inches against 15.9 by 13.2, taller by 0.3 inches and 0.23 pounds heavier, by the listed figures, and the bullets describe different features. Two different models.

What to weigh. Sold by Amazon.com, 12.8 pounds listed. At about 248 square inches of footprint by our arithmetic, it is one of the bulkier cans here. No odour control, no bag size and no warranty term. Buy it for the white finish, the soft lid and the bag-hiding bucket, and test a standard 13-gallon bag on the first change.

Pros

  • Only white steel can here
  • Soft, silent close stated
  • Inner bucket with bag hole hides the bag
  • Lid stays open when fully lifted
  • #5 in Kitchen Trash Cans
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Bag size not stated
  • No odour control
  • No warranty term
  • Fingerprint claim only partial
  • About 248 sq in footprint (our arithmetic)
  • 12.8 lb listed

Best for: A white kitchen that wants a matching steel pedal can with a soft lid and a hidden bag.

9. EKO Mirage-T 50 Liter / 13.2 Gallon Touchless Motion Sensor Trash Can, Brushed Stainless Steel Finish — Slimmest Touchless

Narrow brushed stainless steel rectangular sensor trash can with a dark lid panel

The narrowest can on the page, with a no-liner design and two blanks on power and bags.

Key Specifications

Capacity 50 Liter / 13.2 Gallon, stated
Opening Touchless motion sensor
Soft-close lid Not stated as such; “smoothest” opening and closing
Odour control Not stated
Inner bucket None; “No liner design”
Fingerprint claim Anti-fingerprint stainless finish, stated
Bag fit Not stated
Sensor power AA alkaline, count not stated; up to 8 months
Warranty Not stated
Dimensions and weight 24.6 x 14.8 x 9.8 in; 8.82 lb
Model and seller EK9278TBMT- 50L; sold by Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #1,103 overall; #1 in In-Home Recycling Bins

Why We Recommend It

This is the slimmest can on the page. The spec table gives 9.8 inches wide, 14.8 inches long and 24.6 inches high. Nothing else here is under 10 inches across; the simplehuman is next at 10.1 and holds 10 litres less. If you are filling a gap beside a fridge or a dishwasher, start here. Its footprint is about 145 square inches by our arithmetic, the smallest on the page.

It drops the inner bucket on purpose. “25% More Capacity – No liner design maximizes capacity by offering 25% more room to dispose of the trash.” Without a bucket, the bag hangs in the steel body itself. That gives more room for a given outside size, and it means there is no separate part to lift out and rinse; if a bag leaks, you clean the can. The 25% figure is the brand’s claim, and the listing does not say what it is measured against.

The power line leaves out the number. “Long-lasting Power – Use with AA alkaline batteries and can last up to 8 months of use.” It does not say how many AA cells, or whether they are included. BestOffice and Ninestars both give a count, 4 and 3 C cells, and both say not included. Check the count before the can arrives so you are not left with a lid that will not open.

It claims fingerprint resistance strongly. “Ultimate Fingerprint Resistance – Say goodbye to smudges and hello to a clean flawless exterior that stays immaculate. The anti-fingerprint stainless steel finish keeps your space clean and stylish.” Note the wording across the listing: “stainless steel finish” and “Brushed Stainless Steel Finish” rather than a stainless body. The listing does not say what lies under the finish.

No bag, odour or warranty line. The lid is described as “the smoothest, most seamless lid opening and closing”, which is marketing rather than a soft-close mechanism. Amazon files it as “#1 in In-Home Recycling Bins”, and the title says “Trash Can or Recycling Bin”, so it is ranked among recycling bins, not Kitchen Trash Cans. That #1 is not comparable with the Glad’s.

What to weigh. Sold by Amazon.com, #1,103 overall, model EK9278TBMT- 50L, 8.82 pounds. It states three of the nine checklist items clearly: capacity, sensor opening and fingerprint claim. Buy it for the narrow body, and ask for the battery count, the bag size and the warranty before you commit.

Pros

  • 9.8 in wide, slimmest here
  • Smallest footprint, about 145 sq in (our arithmetic)
  • Touchless motion sensor
  • Anti-fingerprint finish claimed
  • Up to 8 months per battery set
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Battery count not stated
  • Bag size not stated
  • No inner bucket to rinse
  • No warranty term
  • No odour control
  • Ranked as a recycling bin, not a kitchen can

Best for: A narrow gap beside an appliance where touchless opening matters more than a bucket or a warranty.

10. Rubbermaid Elite Stainless Steel Step-On Trash Can, 12 Gallon — Best Smaller Steel Can

Stainless steel step-on trash can with a rounded lid and a dark foot pedal

A big brand with four short bullets, and the checklist mostly blank.

Key Specifications

Capacity 12 gallons, stated
Opening Step-on pedal; extended open lid lock
Soft-close lid Slow close lid, stated
Odour control Not stated
Inner bucket Not stated
Fingerprint claim Fingerprint resistant finish, stated
Bag fit Not stated
Sensor power None needed (pedal)
Warranty Not stated
Dimensions and weight 26.0 x 17.5 x 11.0 in; weight not stated
Model and seller 2196860; sold by Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #4,908 overall; #67 in Kitchen Trash Cans; #24 in Trash Cans

Why We Recommend It

This is the shortest listing on the page. Four bullets, against five or six for most rivals, and they cover three features: “QUIET CLOSE: Slow close lid eases down gently, reducing unwanted noise”, “LID LOCK: Extended open lid lock keeps the container open for longer tasks” and “FINGERPRINT RESISTANT: Finish naturally hides fingerprints, smudges and dirt.” The fourth bullet, “SUPERIOR CRAFTSMANSHIP”, says it is durable without saying how.

The capacity is a step down. 12 gallons is about 45 litres, by our arithmetic, roughly 10% less than the 50 litres most of the field offers. It sits between the simplehuman’s 40 litres and the 13-gallon pack. A standard 13-gallon bag would likely fit a 12-gallon can with a little to spare at the rim, but the listing does not say what bag to use.

Its lid lock holds the lid open, not shut. It is easy to read “LID LOCK” as the pet-proof feature the simplehuman offers. It is not: “Extended open lid lock keeps the container open for longer tasks.” Useful when you are clearing a fridge, irrelevant to a dog.

The blanks are the bulk of the checklist. No inner bucket, no odour control, no bag fit, no warranty term and no weight. For a brand as established as Rubbermaid, the silence on a warranty is notable; Glad, simplehuman and Ninestars all print one. The dimensions are complete, 26.0 inches high, 17.5 long and 11.0 wide, and 11.0 inches makes it one of the narrower cans here.

Its rank is the weakest on the page. #4,908 overall and #67 in Kitchen Trash Cans, with #24 in a broader Trash Cans category. It is the only can here with a two-figure Kitchen Trash Cans rank. That may reflect a newer listing rather than a weaker can; the listing gives no release date to tell.

What to weigh. Sold by Amazon.com, model 2196860. Buy it if you want a known brand, a quiet lid and a fingerprint-resistant steel finish in a slightly smaller, 11-inch-wide can, and ask about the inner bucket and warranty before you do.

Pros

  • Slow close lid stated
  • Extended open lid lock
  • Fingerprint resistant finish
  • 11.0 in wide
  • Complete dimensions
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • 12 gal, below the 50 L field
  • No inner bucket stated
  • No bag fit stated
  • No warranty term
  • No weight listed
  • #67 in Kitchen Trash Cans, weakest rank here

Best for: A buyer who wants a quiet, smudge-resistant steel can from a familiar brand and does not need the full 13 gallons.

Nine Questions, Ten Listings

Here is the whole checklist in one table. A tick is a feature the listing states; “partial” is a feature it half-states, such as a liner ring in place of a bucket or a filter holder without a filter; a dash is silence. Every cell is the listing’s claim, not our measurement.

Can Capacity Opening Soft close Odour Inner bucket Fingerprint Bag fit Warranty
KdbK 13 gal / 50L Pedal Yes — Yes Yes Supermarket 13-gal —
BestOffice 13 gal Sensor, 4 C “Noiseless” Advice only — Yes Supermarket 13-gal —
SIMPLI-MAGIC 50 L / 13.2 gal Pedal Yes Partial (holder) Yes Yes “Most brands”; code B 8-gal “Limited”
simplehuman 40 L / 10.6 gal Pedal Yes — — Plastic Code K 5 years
SONGMICS fluted 13 gal / 50 L Pedal Yes — Yes — Code K, 15 included —
Glad 13 gal Pedal — Clorox lid Partial (bag ring) Plastic — 2 years
Ninestars 13 gal / 50L Sensor, 3 C Yes Sealing lid Partial (liner ring) Yes — 2 years
SONGMICS white 13 gal / 50 L Pedal Yes — Yes Partial — —
EKO 50 L / 13.2 gal Sensor, AA — — None by design Yes — —
Rubbermaid 12 gal Pedal Yes — — Yes — —

Capacity is the one column where everyone answers and almost everyone agrees. Eight of ten are 13 gallons or 50 litres. That is useful in one way: a 13-gallon can is the size the bag aisle is built around. It also means capacity cannot tell these cans apart, and the decision moves to the columns further right.

Soft close is close to standard. Seven listings describe a slow, quiet or soft close. The three that do not are the Glad, which says nothing about its lid’s motion, and two sensor cans, BestOffice and EKO, whose lids are driven by a motor and described as “noiseless” and “smoothest” rather than soft-closing. If a slammed lid bothers you, any of the seven will do on paper.

Odour control is rare and varied. Three listings name anything: a treated lid on the Glad, a sealing lid on the Ninestars and a filter holder on the SIMPLI-MAGIC, which ships without the cartridge. BestOffice’s odour bullet is advice to keep the lid closed. The other six are silent. If odour is the deciding issue, the field narrows to three, and only one of the three, the Glad, needs nothing extra to deliver its claim.

Warranty is the emptiest column of all. Three terms: five years on the simplehuman and two on the Glad and the Ninestars. SIMPLI-MAGIC says “Limited” with no length. Six say nothing, including both SONGMICS cans, the KdbK whose pedal is claimed to last 25 years, and the Rubbermaid. A missing warranty line does not mean no warranty exists, but it does mean you cannot hold the seller to a term you were shown.

Bags of rubbish piled against a white wall
Only two of ten listings say a plain supermarket 13-gallon bag fits; five never mention bags.

The Bag Question, Answered Five Ways

Capacity tells you how much rubbish a can holds. The bag tells you what you will be buying every week for years. Here is what each listing says, sorted from the firmest answer to none.

Answer Cans Exact wording
Plain supermarket 13-gallon bags BestOffice, KdbK “Fits standard 13-gallon trash bags from any supermarket”; “The regular 13-gallon garbage bag in the supermarket can be used”
Most brands, plus an own-brand code SIMPLI-MAGIC “fits most brands of trash bags”; “Compatible with ours CODE B – SIMPLI-MAGIC 8 Gallon Drawstring Trash Bags!”
A named code simplehuman, SONGMICS fluted “code K liners are designed to fit this can perfectly”; “15 matching trash bags (code K) included”
A part that holds the bag, no size Glad, Ninestars, SONGMICS white “Interior bag ring liner”; “removable liner ring”; “bag hole on the back of the inner bucket”
Nothing EKO, Rubbermaid No bag wording; EKO says “No liner design”

Why the plain answer matters. A standard 13-gallon kitchen bag is sold everywhere, in every strength, with drawstrings or without. A can that takes one gives you the widest choice and the easiest restock. Two listings promise that in writing. On the other eight, the most likely outcome is that a standard bag works for most of the 50-litre cans, but likely is not stated, and the difference shows up on the day the bag slides down inside a half-full can.

Why a code can be fine. A bag designed for one can fits it exactly, which is what simplehuman sells: “designed to fit this can perfectly so they don’t slip”. On a 40-litre can, a fitted bag also avoids the bunching that a larger 13-gallon bag would cause. The cost is that you buy the code, not whatever is on offer. The SONGMICS shares the code K name, but neither listing says the bags are interchangeable, so treat that as a question for the seller.

Why the SIMPLI-MAGIC answer is the oddest. It claims both: most brands fit, and its own 8-gallon code B bag is compatible. An 8-gallon bag in a 13.2-gallon can would fill only about 60% of the body by volume, by our arithmetic, if the bag were filled to its rated size. The listing does not explain whether the removable liner is smaller than the outer can or whether 8 is a typing slip. Until it does, a standard 13-gallon bag is a test, not a promise.

A practical tip for the silent five. Buy the smallest pack of standard 13-gallon bags you can find when you order the can. If the bag clamps under the ring or tucks through the bucket hole and stays put when the can is full, you have your answer. If it slips, look for the brand’s own code. Spare rolls store neatly in a cupboard organiser; our under-sink organizer roundup lists ten.

Touchless Means Batteries, and One Listing Will Not Say How Many

Three cans open by sensor, and the searcher asking for the best touchless trash can should know exactly what each one asks of them. A pedal can never needs power. A sensor can always does, and the listing is the only place to find out how much.

Sensor can Battery type and count Included? Stated life Manual backup Warranty
BestOffice 4 × C No 40,000+ openings Not stated Not stated
Ninestars 3 × C No Up to 9 months One-touch button 2 year manufacturer
EKO AA alkaline, count not stated Not stated Up to 8 months Not stated Not stated

The Ninestars answers every line but one. Battery type, count, inclusion, life, a manual mode and a warranty. Only bag fit is missing. That is why we pick it as the best touchless can, despite its #12 category rank.

The BestOffice is the only one that measures life in openings. That is the more honest unit, because a sensor uses most of its power moving the lid. A family that opens the can 40 times a day would reach 40,000 openings in a little under three years, by our arithmetic; a household that opens it 80 times would get about half that. The months on the other two listings assume a usage they do not state.

The EKO leaves you to find the count. “AA alkaline batteries” with no number is the one spec on any sensor can that you need on the day it arrives. It is the slimmest can here and the best-ranked sensor can, at #1,103 overall, but you should check the box or the manual before you order.

The pedal case. Seven of the ten are pedal cans, including every pick but one, and on those the question disappears. A pedal is a lever: if it breaks, it breaks, but it never goes flat. The KdbK claims its pedal was “tested 200,000 times”, and the SIMPLI-MAGIC calls its pedal metal. Those are the only two pedal listings that describe the pedal itself. If you are looking for the best step trash can, every pedal can here except the Glad also describes a soft-closing lid.

A white kitchen with a wood backsplash and black faucet
All three touchless cans need cells, and none of the three includes them in the box.

Fingerprints, Footprints and Two Look-Alike Model Numbers

Six of the eight steel cans claim to resist fingerprints. EKO, BestOffice, KdbK, Ninestars, SIMPLI-MAGIC and Rubbermaid say so outright. The white SONGMICS says a wipe keeps it “smudge-free”, which is about cleaning, not resisting. The fluted SONGMICS says nothing on the subject. The two plastic cans, Glad and simplehuman, do not need the claim. None of the six names a coating or a test, so the claims are words; but a listing that makes one has at least committed to it.

Width is where these cans differ most. Treating the smaller of each listing’s length and width as its narrow side, our reading of the spec tables, the field runs from 9.8 inches on the EKO to 18.0 inches on the Glad, nearly double. If your can lives in a gap between a cabinet and a wall, that range matters more than the half-gallon spread in capacity.

Can Height as listed Length x width as listed Footprint (our arithmetic) Listed weight
EKO 24.6 in 14.8 x 9.8 in About 145 sq in 8.82 lb
SIMPLI-MAGIC 26.0 in 15.0 x 11.0 in About 165 sq in 15.0 lb
Ninestars 25.25 in 11.5 x 15.5 in About 178 sq in 7.47 lb
simplehuman 24.9 in 18.6 x 10.1 in About 188 sq in 6.17 lb
Rubbermaid 26.0 in 17.5 x 11.0 in About 193 sq in Not stated
SONGMICS fluted 24.6 in 15.9 x 13.2 in About 210 sq in 12.57 lb
BestOffice 17.0 in (likely swapped) 23.0 x 13.0 in Not reliable 8.0 lb
KdbK 16.7 in (likely swapped) 26.4 x 14.1 in Not reliable Not stated
SONGMICS white 24.9 in 17.0 x 14.6 in About 248 sq in 12.8 lb
Glad 25.0 in 14.5 x 18.0 in About 261 sq in 5.4 lb

Two listings give a height that cannot be right as printed. The BestOffice says 17.0 inches high and 23.0 long; the KdbK 16.7 high and 26.4 long. A 13-gallon pedal or sensor can is taller than it is long, so the likeliest reading is that the fields are swapped and the cans stand about 23 and 26.4 inches tall. We have not used either for a footprint. Measure your under-counter clearance against the larger figure before you buy, and leave room for the lid to swing up: a lid that opens to 90° adds roughly its own depth to the height you need.

The two SONGMICS are different models. We compared them line by line because one brand appearing twice in a ten-can list usually means a duplicate. Here it does not. The fluted can is ULTB586BZ01 in Ink Black; the plain can is ULTB050W01 in White. Both hold 50 litres, but the dimensions, weights and feature lists all differ: 15.9 by 13.2 inches against 17.0 by 14.6, 12.57 pounds against 12.8, starter bags on one and a bag hole on the other. They are siblings, not twins, and both stay on the list.

Best Alternatives

None of the ten is the right can for every kitchen. Here is where we would look if the picks above do not fit, all drawn from the ten on this page.

Alternative Why Consider It Better For Main Trade-Off
BestOffice 13 Gallon Sensor Touchless and names standard supermarket bags Touch-free kitchens that hate branded liners No warranty term; 4 C batteries not included
simplehuman 40L Slim Five-year warranty, slide lock, wheels Small kitchens with pets or toddlers 40 L only; built around code K liners
SIMPLI-MAGIC 13.2 Gallon Only filter holder; answers every applicable checklist item Food-waste-heavy kitchens No cartridge included; confusing bag code
EKO Mirage-T 50L 9.8 in wide, slimmest on the page Narrow gaps beside appliances Battery count and bag size not stated

If the bin is going next to a sink, think about the whole run of jobs it serves. A garbage disposal guide can take soft food scraps that would otherwise sit in the can, which makes odour control less pressing. And if you are fitting a countertop dishwasher roundup beside the can, check the width table above against the gap you have.

What the Step Up Buys

From plastic to steel. The two plastic cans, Glad and simplehuman, are the lightest listed at 5.4 and 6.17 pounds, and both give a warranty term. The eight steel cans add a metal look and, in six cases, a fingerprint claim. They are heavier, from 7.47 to 15.0 pounds where a weight is listed, and none of the eight gives a warranty term longer than the plastic Glad’s two years. Steel buys appearance, not, on this evidence, a longer promise.

From a bag ring to an inner bucket. A ring, as on the Glad and Ninestars, clamps the bag to the rim. A removable bucket, as on the KdbK, both SONGMICS and the SIMPLI-MAGIC, catches leaks and lifts out to be rinsed. The step up is a cleaner can body after a split bag. The EKO deliberately has neither and claims 25% more room instead.

From a pedal to a sensor. Touchless opening means no foot, no hands, and a set of batteries. The sensor cans here are no larger than the pedal cans and they add a running cost in cells. The best-documented, the Ninestars, adds a two-year warranty and an odour seal; the BestOffice adds a bag promise; the EKO adds slimness.

From no odour control to some. A treated lid (Glad), a sealing lid (Ninestars) or a filter holder (SIMPLI-MAGIC). Only the filter holder implies an ongoing purchase, and the SIMPLI-MAGIC listing does not say which cartridge to buy.

From no warranty to five years. The simplehuman is the only can with a term longer than two years. If a can is something you want to buy once a decade, that single line may be worth more than any feature above.

White kitchen base cabinets above a light wooden floor with a narrow gap at one end
Narrow sides run from 9.8 to 18.0 inches here; measure the gap before you pick a can.

Only BestOffice and KdbK name plain supermarket 13-gallon bags. simplehuman and the fluted SONGMICS point to code K, and SIMPLI-MAGIC names an 8-gallon code B bag for a 13.2-gallon can. If the listing is silent, ask the seller, or buy a small pack of standard bags with the can and test the fit at the first change.

Measure the Gap Width, Not Just the Height

Narrow sides run from 9.8 inches on the EKO to 18.0 on the Glad by our reading of the spec tables. Measure the space at floor level, and remember that a pedal usually sits on the front face and needs foot room in front of it.

Check the Lid Clearance Under a Counter

A can that stands 26 inches tall needs more than 26 inches of space if the lid swings up. The BestOffice and KdbK print heights that look swapped with their lengths; work from the larger figure until the seller confirms.

Decide How You Want It to Open

Seven pedal cans and three sensor cans. Pedals never need power. Sensors need 3 or 4 C cells, or an unstated number of AAs on the EKO, and none of the three includes them. If you want a sensor, the Ninestars has a manual button as backup.

Look for a Soft Close if Noise Matters

Seven listings describe a slow or quiet close. The Glad does not mention one. A soft close also stops the lid snapping down on a bag edge, which keeps the bag from being pulled into the can.

Count the Odour Features, Then the Extras You Must Buy

Three cans name odour control. The Glad’s treated lid needs nothing extra; the Ninestars’ sealing lid needs nothing extra; the SIMPLI-MAGIC’s filter holder ships without the cartridge. If you store food waste for days before collection, our food storage containers roundup has sealed tubs that cut smells at source.

Read the Warranty Line, Including the Small Print

Five years on the simplehuman, two on the Glad and Ninestars, “Limited” on the SIMPLI-MAGIC, nothing on the other six. The Glad warranty excludes purchases from third-party marketplace sellers, and the Glad was sold by Spreetail at capture, so confirm the seller qualifies before relying on it.

A tidy bin area is part of a tidy sink run. Our paper towel holder guide covers the roll that usually sits a step away from the can.

Common Mistakes

  • Choosing by capacity. Eight of ten are 13 gallons or 50 litres; the number cannot separate them.
  • Assuming a supermarket bag fits. Only two of ten listings say so in writing; five say nothing about bags at all.
  • Reading “code K” as one standard. simplehuman and SONGMICS both use the name; neither says the bags are interchangeable.
  • Expecting a filter in the box. The SIMPLI-MAGIC has a filter holder, and its own listing says “No catridge included.”
  • Forgetting the batteries. All three sensor cans need cells; BestOffice wants 4 C and Ninestars 3 C, neither included, and EKO will not say how many AA.
  • Trusting a height as printed. BestOffice lists 17.0 in high and 23.0 in long; KdbK 16.7 high and 26.4 long. Plan for the larger number.
  • Mistaking an open lock for a closed one. Rubbermaid’s lid lock holds the lid open; only the simplehuman locks it shut against pets.
  • Assuming a warranty applies wherever you buy. Glad’s two years exclude third-party marketplace sellers, and it was sold by Spreetail at capture.

Who Should Buy Which

Buy the KdbK 13 Gallon if you want the safest bet on bags. It names regular supermarket 13-gallon bags, includes 20, and adds a removable inner bucket, a bi-force soft close and a fingerprint-proof claim. Accept that it gives no warranty term, lists no weight and is sold by a third-party seller.

Buy the BestOffice if you want touchless and ordinary bags together. It is the only sensor can that names standard supermarket bags, and it rates its battery life at 40,000+ openings. Accept 4 C batteries not included, no warranty term and a height field that looks swapped.

Buy the SIMPLI-MAGIC if odour is your main worry. The only filter holder here, plus a quiet close, a removable liner, a metal pedal and a fingerprint claim. Accept that the cartridge is not included and that its bag advice points to an 8-gallon code.

Buy the simplehuman 40L Slim if you have pets, toddlers or a narrow space. A slide lock that keeps the lid shut, built-in wheels, 10.1 inches wide and a five-year warranty. Accept 40 litres and a can designed for code K liners.

Buy the fluted SONGMICS if you want the best-selling steel can and like its look. #911 overall, a soft close, an inner bucket and 15 code K bags to start. Accept no fingerprint claim, no odour control and no warranty term.

Buy the Glad if you want odour control and a warranty for the least outlay. The #1 seller in Kitchen Trash Cans, with a Clorox lid and two years stated. Accept plastic, no soft close and a warranty condition that depends on who sells it to you.

Buy the Ninestars if you want the best-documented touchless can. Odour-sealing lid, manual button, up to 9 months on 3 C batteries and a two-year warranty. Accept that bag size is not stated and the batteries are extra.

Buy the white SONGMICS if your kitchen is white. The only white steel can, with a soft close and a bucket that hides the bag. Accept silence on bags, odour and warranty.

Buy the EKO Mirage-T if width is everything. 9.8 inches wide and touchless, with an anti-fingerprint finish. Accept an unstated battery count, no inner bucket and no warranty term.

Buy the Rubbermaid Elite if you want a familiar brand in a slightly smaller steel can. 12 gallons, slow close, stay-open lock and a fingerprint-resistant finish. Accept a mostly blank checklist and the weakest rank here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best kitchen trash can?

For most kitchens, the KdbK 13 Gallon stainless steel step can. It is one of only two listings out of ten that say a regular supermarket 13-gallon bag fits, and it puts 20 bags in the box. It also describes a removable inner bucket with a hole to fix the bag, a bi-force damper that closes the lid slowly and lets it stand open at 90 degrees, and a fingerprint-proof brushed finish. Its weaknesses are that it gives no warranty term, lists no weight and is sold by a third-party seller rather than Amazon.com. If you would rather have a stated warranty, the simplehuman 40-litre slim can carries five years, and the Glad, the best-selling kitchen can on Amazon at capture, carries two. If you want touchless opening, the Ninestars is the best-documented sensor can here.

What is the best 13 gallon trash can?

Eight of the ten cans here hold 13 gallons or 50 litres, which are effectively the same size: 50 litres is about 13.2 gallons by our arithmetic. Because capacity is shared, the choice comes down to the bag, the lid and the warranty. The KdbK and the BestOffice are the only two whose listings say a standard supermarket 13-gallon bag fits, the KdbK as a pedal can and the BestOffice as a sensor can. The Glad is the most popular 13-gallon can, #1 in Kitchen Trash Cans, with a Clorox odour lid and a two-year warranty. The Ninestars is the 13-gallon sensor can with the most features stated, including a two-year warranty. If you want odour filtering, the SIMPLI-MAGIC is the only 13-gallon can with a filter holder, though the cartridge is not included.

What is the best touchless trash can?

Of the three sensor cans on this page, the Ninestars 13 Gallon Oval states the most. It runs on 3 C batteries, not included, for up to 9 months, has a one-touch button that holds the lid open as a manual mode, describes a precision-fit lid that closes softly and seals in odours, claims a fingerprint-resistant finish, and carries a two-year manufacturer warranty, the only warranty among the three. What it does not state is which bag fits. If bag fit matters more, the BestOffice is the only touchless can that says standard supermarket 13-gallon bags fit, but it needs 4 C batteries and gives no warranty term. The EKO Mirage-T is the slimmest, at 9.8 inches wide, but does not say how many AA batteries it takes.

What is the best step trash can?

Seven of the ten cans here are step or pedal cans, and every one of them except the Glad describes a slow or soft-closing lid. The KdbK is the strongest overall, naming supermarket 13-gallon bags, including 20 bags, and describing a removable bucket, a bi-force damper and a pedal it says was tested 200,000 times. The simplehuman 40-litre slim can is the best step can for a small kitchen or a home with pets, with a slide lock that keeps the lid shut, wheels and a five-year warranty, though it is designed for its own code K liners. The fluted SONGMICS is the best-selling steel step can, at #911 overall. The SIMPLI-MAGIC adds a metal pedal and the only odour filter holder. A pedal can never needs batteries, which is the main reason to prefer one over a sensor.

Do standard 13 gallon bags fit these trash cans?

Only two listings promise it. BestOffice says its can fits standard 13-gallon trash bags from any supermarket, and KdbK says the regular 13-gallon garbage bag from the supermarket can be used. SIMPLI-MAGIC says its can fits most brands, but also names its own 8-gallon code B bag as compatible, which it does not explain for a 13.2-gallon can. simplehuman designs its 40-litre can for code K liners, and the fluted SONGMICS ships with 15 code K bags. The Glad, Ninestars and white SONGMICS have a bag ring, liner ring or bucket hole to hold a bag, but do not say what size, and the EKO and Rubbermaid say nothing about bags. On the 50-litre cans a standard 13-gallon bag is the natural guess, but test it with a small pack before buying in bulk.

Which kitchen trash can is best for odour control?

Three of the ten listings name any odour feature, and they work in different ways. The Glad has a lid formulated with Clorox Odor Protection, which the listing says helps block and trap smells for the life of the can, with nothing to replace. The Ninestars has a precision-fit lid that closes softly and seals odours inside. The SIMPLI-MAGIC has a built-in odour filter holder, but its listing also says no cartridge is included, so you will need to source the filter. BestOffice offers only advice to keep the lid closed. The other six describe no odour control at all. A lid that closes fully every time, which a soft-close or sensor lid helps with, and a bag tied off promptly, will do more than any claim. Scraping soft food waste down a disposal also keeps smells out of the can.

How long do kitchen trash can warranties last?

On this page, from five years to nothing stated. simplehuman gives a 5-year warranty on its 40-litre slim can, the longest by far. Glad gives two years, set out in full, and Ninestars gives a 2-year manufacturer warranty, the only sensor can with a term. SIMPLI-MAGIC says only Limited, with no length. The other six, both SONGMICS, the EKO, the BestOffice, the KdbK and the Rubbermaid, give no warranty term in the listing. KdbK claims its pedal was tested 200,000 times with a service life over 25 years, but that is not a warranty. Read the conditions too: Glad excludes cans bought from unauthorised retailers, including third-party sellers on the Amazon marketplace, and its can was sold by Spreetail at capture, so check the seller before relying on it.

Is a stainless steel trash can better than plastic?

It is a trade, not an upgrade on every count. Eight of the ten cans here are stainless steel or have a stainless finish, and six of those claim to resist fingerprints. Steel looks at home beside steel appliances and feels sturdier, and the steel cans here weigh from 7.47 to 15.0 pounds where a weight is listed. The two plastic cans, the Glad and the simplehuman, are the lightest at 5.4 and 6.17 pounds, and both give a warranty term, five years and two years, which no steel can here beats. The Glad also has the only odour treatment built into the lid. Plastic does not dent or show smudges the way bare steel can, and it wipes clean. Choose steel for looks and stiffness, plastic for weight and a stated warranty.

Final Verdict

Best BudgetGlad 13 Gallon Step Trash Can with Clorox Odor Protection

#1 in Kitchen Trash Cans, a Clorox odour lid, a bag ring and two years stated; confirm the seller qualifies.

Ten kitchen trash cans, and eight of them hold the same 50 litres. Capacity is the one line every listing fills in and the one that tells you least. What separates these cans is everything after it: the lid, the bucket, the odour feature, the warranty and, above all, the bag you will be buying for years.

On the bag, the listings mostly go quiet. Two, BestOffice and KdbK, promise that a plain supermarket 13-gallon bag fits. Three point to a code: code K on the simplehuman and the fluted SONGMICS, and code B 8-gallon bags on the 13.2-gallon SIMPLI-MAGIC. Five, including the #1-selling Glad, say nothing. The rest of the checklist is patchy too: seven soft closes, six fingerprint claims among eight steel cans, three odour features and three warranty terms.

So buy a kitchen trash can by the bag and the blanks. Start with whether the listing names a bag you can buy anywhere. Then check the soft close, the bucket and the odour feature, look for a warranty term and its conditions, count the batteries on a sensor can, and measure the gap against the larger of any two dimensions.

If you buy one can from this page, make it the KdbK 13 Gallon: a written promise that supermarket 13-gallon bags fit, 20 bags to start, a removable bucket, a soft-close damper and a fingerprint-proof finish. If you want touchless, the Ninestars is the best-documented sensor can and the only one with a warranty; if budget comes first, the Glad brings odour control and two years of cover, once you have confirmed the seller.
