A Cup Is 5 Ounces to the Best 5 Cup Coffee Maker, Not 8

Every coffee maker on this page is sold by the cup. Five cups, says the Mr. Coffee. Five cups, says the KRUPS, the Holstein, the Tasty and the Amaste. Four cups, say the Elite Gourmet and the Aiosa. None of them means the cup in your cupboard. A measuring cup is 8 US fluid ounces. A coffee maker’s cup, on the evidence of these ten listings, is closer to 5.

Five listings give you enough to work it out. Both Mr. Coffee machines say “25 oz.” for five cups. The Sykaffe says “25 ounces of coffee in a single brew cycle”. The Amazon Basics puts “0.8 Qt” in its title, which is 25.6 ounces by our arithmetic. The Aiosa says “4-Cup 20Oz Capacity”. Divide each volume by its own cup count, which is our arithmetic, and all five land between 5.0 and 5.1 ounces per cup, or about 148 to 151 millilitres.

So a 5-cup coffee maker makes about 25 ounces of coffee, roughly 740 millilitres. That is two 12-ounce mugs with a splash left over, which is how Mr. Coffee puts it: “perfect for two 12-oz. cups”. In 8-ounce measuring cups it is just over three. A 4-cup maker at the same rate makes about 20 ounces: one and two-thirds mugs, or two and a half measuring cups. These are small machines, and the label makes them sound bigger than they are.

One listing breaks the pattern, and four give nothing to check. The Elite Gourmet is sold as a 4-cup maker, and its size field says “32 ounce”. If that were the brew volume, its cup would be 8 ounces, the only measuring-cup cup on the page. Its own reservoir bullet says “up to 4 cups of water” and gives no ounces, so we report both and cannot tell which describes the pot. The KRUPS, Holstein, Tasty and Amaste state a cup count and no volume at all.

Capacity is the first question, not the only one. At this size, what separates one machine from another is a short list of features that each listing either states or leaves out. Can you pull the carafe mid-brew? Eight say yes in words. Does it switch itself off, and when? Two say after two hours and one after 30 minutes. Is there a reusable filter in the box? Nine say so; the Amazon Basics does not. Does a hotplate keep the pot warm? Six name one. And how much counter does it take? By our arithmetic from the listed dimensions, the footprints run from about 37.6 square inches to about 74.3, a factor of two.

This guide is stricter on size than our small drip coffee maker roundup, which covers small drip makers more broadly. Every machine here is sold as a 4- or 5-cup brewer, and the comparison is built on the ounces per cup each listing states, the reservoir it describes and the features it commits to in writing. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup; popularity below is Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank only.

All ten were captured on 5 October 2026. Their overall Best Sellers Ranks run from #1,139 to #101,452, and in Amazon’s Coffee Machines category from #3 to #115.

Best Sellers Ranks and specifications are taken from each manufacturer’s Amazon listing as displayed on 5 October 2026 through a United States connection, and may change. Volumes are as stated by each listing; ounces per cup are our arithmetic. We divide the stated volume by the stated cup count and convert at 29.57 millilitres per US fluid ounce. The Amazon Basics states 0.8 quarts, which we convert at 32 ounces per quart. The Elite Gourmet’s 32 ounce figure comes from its size field, not a bullet, and its reservoir bullet says “up to 4 cups of water” with no ounces, so its 8.0 oz per cup is conditional. The Sykaffe and KRUPS describe how long their hotplates keep warm, not a shut-off in those words. Ranks are overall Best Sellers Ranks as returned on 5 October 2026; all ten also rank in Amazon’s Coffee Machines category, from #3 to #115. Seven were sold by Amazon.com at capture; the Sykaffe, Amaste and Aiosa by their brands. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for any product here.

How We Chose These Ten

We researched current listings, compared manufacturer specifications and documentation, and read each listing’s capacity claims, reservoir description and feature list line by line. We did not carry out hands-on testing, and nothing below is presented as measured performance data. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup. We used Amazon Best Sellers Rank, buy-box stock and listing specifications instead, and nothing on this page describes or implies how owners have scored these machines.

  • Four- and five-cup drip makers only — every machine here is a drip coffee maker with a glass carafe, sold as a 4-cup or 5-cup brewer. Single-serve pod machines, pour-over cones and 8-cup or larger drip makers were not in the running.
  • New units only — every buy box here was a new product at capture.
  • Volume recorded exactly as printed — ounces, quarts or a size field, with its source noted. Where a listing gives a cup count and nothing else, we record the volume as not stated rather than assume a standard cup.
  • Ounces per cup as our arithmetic — we divide each stated volume by the same listing’s cup count, and convert at 29.57 millilitres per US fluid ounce and 32 ounces per quart. Mug counts assume a 12-ounce mug and an 8-ounce measuring cup. Every one of those figures is labelled as ours.
  • Features logged in words — pause-and-serve, auto shut-off and its time, reusable filter, keep-warm and its length, programming and brew strength are marked yes only where the listing says so. A hotplate the listing does not name is marked not stated, even where a shut-off timer suggests one.
  • Footprint from listed dimensions — length times width from each spec table, which is our arithmetic. We do not know whether a listing measured the machine or its box. One weight field that cannot describe a coffee maker is left out.
  • Popularity from Best Sellers Rank only — ranks are quoted exactly as returned on 5 October 2026, overall and in Coffee Machines. Ranks move constantly.
  • Verified stock and seller — each product was the buy-box offer and in stock on amazon.com on 5 October 2026.

The Ten 4- and 5-Cup Coffee Makers in Detail

1. Mr. Coffee Programmable Coffee Maker, 5 Cups, with Auto Pause — Best Overall

Compact black drip coffee maker with a small glass carafe and a control panel on the front

Ounces per cup 5.0 oz, about 148 ml (our arithmetic)

Footprint About 74.3 sq in (our arithmetic)
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #1,642 overall; #6 in Coffee Machines

Why We Recommend It

This is the most completely described 5-cup maker on the page. Its capacity bullet reads “25 oz. Capacity: Brews up to two standard 12 oz. cups, perfect for personal use or sharing”. That gives you both the volume and a practical translation. Divide 25 ounces by five cups, our arithmetic, and the Mr. Coffee cup is 5 ounces, about 148 millilitres. The two 12-ounce mugs it promises come to 24 ounces, so the claim holds with an ounce to spare.

It commits to every feature this guide counts except a named hotplate. Auto Pause: “Allows you to pour a cup during the brewing cycle, then resumes brewing”. Auto shut-off: “Coffee maker automatically shuts off after two hours for safety and energy saving”. Filter: “Includes Filtration System and Reusable Filter”. A shut-off after two hours implies that something stays on after brewing, but the listing never uses the words keep warm or warming plate, so we mark it not named rather than guess.

It is the only programmable machine here. “Brew Later Feature: Set your coffee maker to brew coffee ahead of time, waking up to a freshly brewed pot.” No other listing on the page describes a timer or a clock. The Holstein mentions an “Automatic start” without explaining it, which is not the same promise. If you want 25 ounces ready when the alarm goes, this is the only listing that says it can do that. For timers on larger machines, see our programmable coffee maker guide.

The cost is counter space. The spec table gives 11.0 inches high, 10.0 inches long and 7.4 inches wide. Length times width, our arithmetic, is about 74.3 square inches, the largest footprint on the page and roughly twice the Amazon Basics. It is also the tallest machine here by a fraction of an inch, which matters if it has to slide under a wall cabinet. The listing calls the design “Compact”, and next to a 12-cup machine it is, but among 5-cup makers it is the big one.

One field is unusable. The weight field reads 0.1 pounds, which cannot describe a coffee maker with a glass carafe, so we leave it out. The carafe “Measures in ounces”, which helps if you want to brew less than a full pot. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #1,642 overall and #6 in Coffee Machines, second only to its non-programmable sibling on this page.

Pros

  • 25 oz stated, so about 5 oz a cup
  • Only Brew Later timer on the page
  • Two-hour auto shut-off stated
  • Auto Pause stated
  • Reusable filter and filtration system included
  • Sold by Amazon.com; #6 in Coffee Machines

Cons

  • About 74.3 sq in, the largest footprint here
  • Tallest machine, about 11.0 in
  • Keep-warm plate not named
  • Weight field (0.1 lb) unusable
  • Reservoir size not stated separately
  • No warranty stated

Best for: A buyer who wants two mugs ready on a timer and has the counter depth to spare.

2. Mr. Coffee 5-Cup Mini Brew Switch Coffee Maker (2134286) — Best Seller

Small white drip coffee maker with a glass carafe and a single switch on the base

The best-ranked machine here states the same 25 ounces, and asks you to remember the switch.

Key Specifications

Stated volume 25 oz; “perfect for two 12-oz. cups”
Ounces per cup 5.0 oz, about 148 ml (our arithmetic)
Reservoir Water window, size not stated
Pause-and-serve Grab-a-Cup Auto Pause, stated
Auto shut-off Not stated; light “to remind you to shut it off”
Filter Reusable, stated
Keep-warm Not named
Dimensions 10.7 H x 9.8 L x 7.2 W in
Footprint About 70.0 sq in (our arithmetic)
Weight 2.93 lb
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #1,139 overall; #3 in Coffee Machines

Why We Recommend It

This is the best-selling 4- or 5-cup maker on the page by a clear margin. It ranks #1,139 overall and #3 in Coffee Machines, ahead of every other machine here and ahead of its programmable sibling. Its capacity claim is the same: “makes up to 25 oz. of coffee—perfect for two 12-oz. cups”. Five cups into 25 ounces, our arithmetic, gives the same 5-ounce cup, about 148 millilitres.

The switch is the point, and it cuts both ways. “Easy switch with power indicator lights up to show coffee maker is on, or to remind you to shut it off.” That sentence tells you something the feature list does not say outright: this listing describes no automatic shut-off. Of the three machines here with a stated shut-off time, this is not one. If you are the sort of person who leaves the house with the pot on, the light is your only safeguard, and the two-hour shut-off on the programmable Mr. Coffee or the Amazon Basics is worth weighing.

The pause and the filter are both stated. “Grab-a-Cup Auto Pause lets you grab a cup before brewing is finished.” The reusable filter appears at the tail of the first bullet, “Filter type:Reusable”, almost as an afterthought, but it is there. A “Lift & Clean Filter Basket” and an “Easy-to-view water window” round it out, and the carafe “features ounce markings for perfect measuring”.

It is nearly as big as the programmable model. The spec table gives 10.7 inches high, 9.8 long and 7.2 wide, about 70.0 square inches of counter by our arithmetic. That is the second-largest footprint here and close to double the smallest. The listed weight is 2.93 pounds. The listing says “Compact design is great for small spaces”; four other machines on this page take up about 40 square inches or less.

What to weigh. No hotplate is named and no warranty is stated. The listing does add a materials line, “This product contains Aluminum, Iron, Copper, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc, Tin, Glass”, which no other listing here offers. It is sold by Amazon.com. For two mugs with the simplest controls and the most shoppers behind it, it is the obvious default; for a machine that turns itself off, it is not.

Pros

  • Best rank here: #1,139 overall, #3 in Coffee Machines
  • 25 oz stated, about 5 oz a cup
  • Grab-a-Cup Auto Pause stated
  • Reusable filter stated
  • Water window and ounce-marked carafe
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • No auto shut-off stated
  • About 70.0 sq in, second-largest footprint
  • Keep-warm plate not named
  • Reservoir size not stated
  • No timer
  • No warranty stated

Best for: A buyer who wants the most popular two-mug brewer and will switch it off by hand.

3. Amazon Basics 5 Cup Drip Coffee Maker with Glass Coffee Pot (0.8 Qt) — Smallest Footprint

Slim matte black drip coffee maker with a small glass coffee pot on the warming base

The narrowest machine here states its pot in quarts and its shut-off in hours, and leaves out the filter.

Key Specifications

Stated volume 0.8 Qt glass coffee pot
Volume converted About 25.6 oz or 757 ml (our arithmetic)
Ounces per cup 5.1 oz, about 151 ml (our arithmetic)
Pause-and-serve Pause & Pour auto-pause, stated
Auto shut-off Built-in 2-hour, stated
Filter Removable filter basket; reusable filter not stated
Keep-warm Not named
Dimensions 9.45 H x 7.08 L x 5.31 W in
Footprint About 37.6 sq in (our arithmetic)
Weight 1.98 lb
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #2,631 overall; #10 in Coffee Machines

Why We Recommend It

It is the only listing here that states its pot in quarts. The title says “Glass Coffee Pot (0.8 Qt)”. At 32 ounces to the quart, our arithmetic, that is 25.6 ounces, about 757 millilitres. Over five cups it works out to about 5.1 ounces per cup, a shade more than the Mr. Coffee’s 5.0. In practice it is the same machine size: two 12-ounce mugs, or just over three measuring cups.

It takes the least counter space on the page. The spec table gives 7.08 inches long and 5.31 inches wide. Multiplied, our arithmetic, that is about 37.6 square inches, effectively tied with the Aiosa and about half the footprint of either Mr. Coffee. At 9.45 inches high it is also about an inch and a half shorter than the programmable Mr. Coffee. For a dorm shelf or the gap beside a sink, the numbers make the case better than the listing’s “compact 5-cup capacity” does.

The shut-off and the pause are both in writing. “AUTO SHUTOFF: Built-in 2-hour automatic shutoff ensures safety and energy savings.” “PAUSE & POUR: Auto-pause lets you grab a cup mid-brew without mess.” That puts it alongside the programmable Mr. Coffee as one of only two machines here with a stated two-hour shut-off. Like the Mr. Coffee, it does not name a warming plate, though a two-hour shut-off implies something stays on after brewing.

The filter is the gap. Nine of the ten listings here say a reusable or permanent filter comes in the box. This one says only “Removable filter basket makes grounds disposal and maintenance effortless”. A removable basket is not a reusable filter, so plan on buying paper filters unless the seller confirms otherwise. The listing does not say whether the basket takes basket-style or cone filters.

What to weigh. The carafe is “Duralife glass” with “an ergonomic handle for drip-free pouring”. The listed weight is 1.98 pounds. It is the newest release on the page by its release date field, 29 April 2025, sold by Amazon.com, and ranks #2,631 overall and #10 in Coffee Machines. No warranty is stated. If counter space is the limit and you are happy with paper filters, it is the machine the numbers favour.

Pros

  • About 37.6 sq in, the smallest footprint here
  • 0.8 qt stated, about 25.6 oz by our arithmetic
  • Built-in two-hour auto shut-off stated
  • Auto-pause stated
  • 1.98 lb, among the lightest
  • Sold by Amazon.com; #10 in Coffee Machines

Cons

  • Reusable filter not stated
  • Filter shape not stated
  • Keep-warm plate not named
  • Volume given only in quarts
  • No timer
  • No warranty stated

Best for: A buyer with the least counter space who wants a stated shut-off and does not mind paper filters.

4. Sykaffe 5 Cup Coffee Maker, Compact Machine with Reusable Filter, Keep Warm — Longest Keep-Warm

Narrow black drip coffee maker with a glass carafe and a graduated water tank on the side

It states 25 ounces and a two-hour hotplate, and says nothing about pouring mid-brew.

Key Specifications

Stated volume 25 oz in a single brew cycle
Ounces per cup 5.0 oz, about 148 ml (our arithmetic)
Reservoir Graduated Easy-View tank, size not stated
Pause-and-serve Not stated
Keep-warm Up to 2 hours, stated
Auto shut-off Not stated in those words
Filter Reusable, removable, dishwasher-safe
Dimensions 7.68 x 5.31 x 10.25 in (bullet and spec table agree)
Footprint About 40.8 sq in (our arithmetic)
Weight 2.65 lb
Seller Sykaffe
Best Sellers Rank #46,526 overall; #64 in Coffee Machines

Why We Recommend It

Its capacity bullet is the clearest on the page. “This 5 cup coffee maker can brew 25 ounces of coffee in a single brew cycle, providing the right amount for 1–2 people.” Twenty-five ounces over five cups, our arithmetic, is the same 5-ounce cup as the Mr. Coffee pair, about 148 millilitres. Its dimensions are equally consistent: the bullet gives 7.68 x 5.31 x 10.25 inches, and the spec table matches figure for figure.

The hotplate is the longest stated here. “2-Hour Keep-Warm Function: Once brewing is complete, the keep-warm plate maintains the brewed coffee at the ideal temperature for up to 2 hours.” The KRUPS stops at 30 minutes and the Amaste shuts off at 30. If you brew 25 ounces and drink it over a morning, the Sykaffe is the listing that promises the pot will still be hot at the second mug. The listing does not say whether the whole machine switches off after the two hours, or only the plate, so we record keep-warm, not shut-off.

It does not mention pause-and-serve. Eight of the ten listings say in words that you can pull the carafe mid-brew. The Sykaffe describes “Simple One-Touch Operation” and an Easy-View tank, and is silent on a drip-stop. That does not prove it lacks one. It means you cannot count on it, and pulling a carafe from a drip maker with no stop valve puts coffee on the hotplate.

The cleaning claims are specific. “Equipped with a removable, dishwasher-safe filter and carafe, there’s no need for paper filters.” Only the KRUPS and Tasty make similar dishwasher claims. At about 40.8 square inches by our arithmetic, it is the third-smallest footprint here, sharing its 5.31-inch width with the Amazon Basics and the Aiosa. The listed weight is 2.65 pounds.

What to weigh. It is sold by Sykaffe rather than Amazon.com and ranks #46,526 overall and #64 in Coffee Machines. No warranty is stated. The tank is described as “graduated”, but its size is not given separately from the 25-ounce brew. For a long-held pot on a narrow footprint, it is the strongest listing; for pouring before the brew finishes, look elsewhere.

Pros

  • 25 oz stated, about 5 oz a cup
  • Keep-warm up to 2 hours, the longest stated
  • Reusable filter and carafe dishwasher-safe
  • About 40.8 sq in footprint
  • Dimensions consistent across bullet and spec table
  • Graduated water tank

Cons

  • Pause-and-serve not stated
  • Shut-off not stated in those words
  • Sold by the brand, not Amazon.com
  • Rank #46,526 overall
  • Tank size not stated separately
  • No warranty stated

Best for: A slow morning drinker who wants the second mug hot and has a narrow spot on the counter.

5. Aiosa 4 Cup Mini Drip Coffee Maker, Reusable Filter, Keep Warm, Anti-Drip — Best 4 Cup

Small black four-cup drip coffee maker with a short glass carafe and a single switch

The one 4-cup listing whose volume matches its cup count, and the only one on the page that states its wattage.

Key Specifications

Stated volume 20 oz
Ounces per cup 5.0 oz, about 148 ml (our arithmetic)
Power 650W, stated
Pause-and-serve Anti-drip switch, stated
Keep-warm Automatic, length not stated
Auto shut-off Not stated
Filter Reusable permanent filter
Dimensions 9.25 H x 7.09 L x 5.31 W in
Footprint About 37.7 sq in (our arithmetic)
Weight 1.98 lb
Warranty 1 year
Best Sellers Rank #101,452 overall; #115 in Coffee Machines

Why We Recommend It

This is the best 4 cup coffee maker here on the evidence of its own numbers. The first bullet opens “4-Cup 20Oz Capacity & 650W Power”. Twenty ounces over four cups, our arithmetic, is a 5-ounce cup, about 148 millilitres, the same unit the 5-cup listings use. That consistency is the point: the Aiosa’s 4 cups mean what the Mr. Coffee’s 5 cups mean, one cup fewer. In mugs, 20 ounces is one 12-ounce mug and two-thirds of another, or two and a half measuring cups.

It is the only listing that states its power. 650 watts is the figure, and no other machine on the page gives one. Wattage on a drip maker governs how fast the heating element moves water, so it is useful for comparing brew times, but with nothing to compare against here it is mostly reassurance that the machine runs on an ordinary kitchen socket without strain.

The pause, the hotplate and the filter are all described. “Designed with a convenient anti-drip switch, this drip coffee maker automatically stops coffee flow when the carafe is removed during brewing.” The keep-warm is “Automatic” and “retains optimal temperature post-brewing”, without a time limit. The filter is “a durable permanent filter”. What is missing is a shut-off: the listing never says the hotplate or the machine turns off on its own, which on an unattended 650-watt appliance is worth knowing.

It is as small as the Amazon Basics. The spec table gives 9.25 inches high, 7.09 long and 5.31 wide, about 37.7 square inches by our arithmetic, a fraction more than the Amazon Basics’ 37.6. It is the shortest machine on the page other than the Elite Gourmet, whose 6.0-inch height field is doubtful. The listed weight is 1.98 pounds, the same as the Amazon Basics and Holstein.

What to weigh. It ranks #101,452 overall and #115 in Coffee Machines, the weakest rank here by some way, and is sold by Aiosa Kitchen Life. It offers a 1-year warranty. If you drink one big mug a day and want a machine whose stated numbers add up, it is the cleanest 4-cup listing on the page; the Elite Gourmet is the better-ranked alternative, with a volume claim that does not.

Pros

  • 20 oz stated: a 5 oz cup, consistent with the 5-cup listings
  • Only stated wattage here, 650W
  • Anti-drip pause stated
  • Automatic keep-warm and permanent filter
  • About 37.7 sq in footprint
  • 1-year warranty

Cons

  • Weakest rank here, #101,452 overall
  • No auto shut-off stated
  • Keep-warm length not stated
  • Sold by the brand, not Amazon.com
  • 20 oz is under two 12 oz mugs
  • No timer

Best for: One person who wants a single large mug and a 4-cup listing whose numbers agree.

6. Elite Gourmet EHC4128 Automatic 4-Cup Drip Coffee Maker — Best-Ranked 4 Cup

Small black four-cup coffee maker with a glass carafe and a semi-transparent water reservoir

A 4-cup maker whose size field says 32 ounces, which would make its cup the only 8-ounce cup on the page.

Key Specifications

Stated volume “32 ounce” (size field only)
Ounces per cup 8.0 oz if 32 oz is the pot (our arithmetic)
Reservoir “Up to 4 cups of water” with level indicator
Pause-and-serve Pause ’N Serve, stated
Keep-warm Turns on automatically when brewing
Auto shut-off Not stated
Filter Reusable, with removable basket
Dimensions 6.0 H x 8.0 L x 9.0 W in (height doubtful)
Footprint About 72.0 sq in (our arithmetic)
Weight 2.12 lb
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #2,410 overall; #8 in Coffee Machines

Why We Recommend It

Its volume depends on which field you read. The title and bullets say 4 cups: “4 CUP GLASS CARAFE” and a reservoir that “holds up to 4 cups of water capacity”. The size field says “32 ounce”. If 32 ounces is the brew volume, its cup is 8 ounces by our arithmetic, a measuring cup, and four of them would fill two and two-thirds 12-ounce mugs. If its cups are the 5-ounce coffee-maker cups every other stated listing uses, it brews about 20 ounces, like the Aiosa. The listing does not resolve it, and we cannot.

The safe reading is the smaller one. Four of the five machines that state a volume put the cup at 5.0 ounces and the fifth at 5.1. A size field is often filled in loosely, and 32 ounces could describe a carafe’s brim capacity rather than what the reservoir delivers. Plan on about 20 ounces, roughly one and two-thirds mugs, and treat anything more as a bonus. If you need a firm figure, the Aiosa states 20 ounces outright.

The features are all there. “PAUSE ’N SERVE allows a quick pour of fresh coffee in the middle of the brewing cycle.” “KEEP WARM FUNCTION automatically turns on when brewing to keep your coffee hot & fresh.” “RE-USABLE FILTER with removable filter basket is easy to clean.” It is one of only four machines here to state all three of pause, keep-warm and reusable filter. The reservoir is “SEMI-TRANSPARENT” with a level indicator. No shut-off time is given, so the hotplate’s off switch is you.

The dimensions do not quite add up. The spec table gives 6.0 inches high, 8.0 long and 9.0 wide. A drip maker with a carafe under a filter basket and a reservoir behind it is rarely 6 inches tall, and every other machine here lists between 9.25 and 11.0 inches. We report the figures as listed but would not plan cabinet clearance on them. Taken at face value, the footprint is about 72.0 square inches by our arithmetic, third-largest on the page. The listed weight is 2.12 pounds.

What to weigh. It ranks #2,410 overall and #8 in Coffee Machines, the best rank of the two 4-cup makers by a wide margin, and is sold by Amazon.com. It is the lowest-priced machine on the page at capture. No warranty is stated. For a small, well-equipped brewer, it is a fair choice; just do not count on 32 ounces.

Pros

  • Pause, keep-warm and reusable filter all stated
  • Best-ranked 4-cup maker: #8 in Coffee Machines
  • Semi-transparent reservoir with level indicator
  • Keep-warm turns on automatically
  • Lowest-priced machine here at capture
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Size field (32 oz) and bullets (4 cups) disagree
  • No auto shut-off stated
  • 6.0 in height field looks doubtful
  • About 72.0 sq in footprint as listed
  • No timer
  • No warranty stated

Best for: A buyer who wants a popular, fully featured 4-cup maker and plans on about 20 ounces.

Exterior Stainless steel
Dimensions 10.08 H x 5.71 L x 8.07 W in
Footprint About 46.1 sq in (our arithmetic)
Warranty 2 Year Limited
Best Sellers Rank #8,533 overall; #18 in Coffee Machines

Why We Recommend It

It is the best-built machine on paper, and the vaguest on size. The title says “Compact 5 Cup” and the first bullet says it “brews just the right amount for 1-2 people”. Nowhere does the listing give ounces or millilitres for the pot or the tank. If KRUPS uses the same 5-ounce cup as the listings that do state a volume, it would brew about 25 ounces, our arithmetic, but that is an assumption, and we flag it as one.

The hotplate has a short, stated limit. “Keep Warm Feature: Maintain your coffee at the optimal temperature for up to 30 minutes after brewing.” That is a quarter of the Sykaffe’s two hours. It is also, in effect, a safety cut-off, though the listing does not use those words. For two mugs drunk back to back, 30 minutes is plenty. For a pot you sip through the morning, the second mug will be on its own after half an hour.

The materials and warranty set it apart. “The small coffee maker’s stainless steel exterior is easy to wipe clean while the glass carafe and permanent filter are dishwasher-safe.” It is the only stainless-steel body here, and the spec table gives a “2 Year Limited Warranty”, twice what the Holstein, Amaste and Aiosa offer and the only two-year term on the page. The “No-drip spout design” and “top-fill water tank” are both practical details.

The pause is described clearly. “This brewing process automatically pauses when the carafe is removed, allowing you to savor the first cup while the rest brews.” A measuring spoon is included. The footprint is about 46.1 square inches by our arithmetic, from a 5.71 by 8.07 inch base, and it stands 10.08 inches high. With a top-fill tank, leave room above it to open the lid. The listed weight is 2.78 pounds.

What to weigh. It ranks #8,533 overall and #18 in Coffee Machines and is sold by Amazon.com. It sits at the premium end of this page. If a steel body and a longer warranty matter more than a stated volume, it is the pick; if you want to know exactly how much it brews, ask before buying.

Pros

  • Only stainless steel exterior here
  • Only two-year warranty on the page
  • Pause & Brew stated
  • Permanent filter and carafe dishwasher-safe
  • Top-fill tank and no-drip spout
  • About 46.1 sq in footprint

Cons

  • No volume in ounces or millilitres
  • Keep-warm stops at 30 minutes
  • Shut-off not stated in those words
  • Tank size not stated
  • Premium end of this page
  • Top-fill lid needs clearance above

Best for: A buyer who wants a steel body and the longest warranty and drinks both mugs quickly.

8. Holstein Housewares 5 Cup Drip Coffee Maker with Auto Pause & Serve — Cone Filter Pick

Small teal drip coffee maker with a glass carafe and a water window on the side

A sensible feature list behind a listing that opens with instructions for an espresso machine.

Key Specifications

Stated volume Not stated
Ounces per cup Not calculable
Reservoir Full view water window, size not stated
Pause-and-serve Auto-pause and serve, stated
Keep-warm Not stated
Auto shut-off Not stated
Filter Removable, washable cone filter basket
Colour Teal (spec); bullet describes black with stainless detail
Dimensions 9.76 H x 6.0 L x 8.0 W in
Footprint About 48.0 sq in (our arithmetic)
Weight 1.98 lb
Warranty 1 year limited

Why We Recommend It

The first bullet belongs to a different product. It reads: “Too coarse a grind, too little coffee, or insufficiently tamping the grounds before brewing can all lead to inadequate pressure for a proper brew.” It goes on about the amount of espresso extracted. A drip coffee maker does not tamp grounds or build pressure. It looks like copy carried over from another listing, and it says nothing about this machine. We set it aside.

The rest is a reasonable 5-cup feature list, without a volume. “Removable & washable cone filter basket and measuring spoon included. Automatic start, auto-pause and serve functions. Full view water window. Glass carafe with measurement marks.” No ounces or millilitres appear for the carafe or the tank, so the Holstein’s cup is undefined. It is the only listing here to name a cone-shaped filter, which matters if you ever switch to paper: cone and basket filters are not interchangeable.

“Automatic start” is not explained. It could mean the machine begins brewing when switched on, which all of them do, or something closer to a timer. The listing describes no clock, no programming and no delay, so we do not count it as programmable. The programmable Mr. Coffee is the only machine here that describes a brew-later timer.

The listing disagrees with itself on colour. The spec table and title say “Teal”. A bullet says “The black color with stainless steel detail will match any kitchen décor.” That is a small thing, but along with the espresso bullet it suggests the copy was assembled from more than one product page. Check the photo against the colour you choose.

What to weigh. The spec table gives 9.76 inches high, 6.0 long and 8.0 wide, about 48.0 square inches by our arithmetic, and a listed weight of 1.98 pounds. No keep-warm and no shut-off are stated. It offers a “1-year limited warranty”, is sold by Amazon.com, and ranks #22,518 overall and #36 in Coffee Machines. Buy it for the cone basket and the pause; ask about the hotplate first.

Pros

  • Auto-pause and serve stated
  • Only cone filter basket named here
  • Measuring spoon included
  • Full view water window; carafe measurement marks
  • 1-year limited warranty
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • No volume stated
  • First bullet copied from an espresso listing
  • Colour conflict between spec and bullet
  • Keep-warm and shut-off not stated
  • “Automatic start” not explained
  • About 48.0 sq in footprint

Best for: A buyer who prefers a cone filter and a pause, and will confirm the hotplate with the seller.

9. Tasty 5-Cup Coffee Maker with Auto Pause & Pour and Reusable Filter — Most Filter Options

Small aqua drip coffee maker with a glass carafe and a clear water window

The only listing that says its mesh filter can be swapped for paper, and one of four with no volume at all.

Key Specifications

Stated volume Not stated; “brews up to 5 cups”
Ounces per cup Not calculable
Reservoir “5-cup capacity water tank” with level indicators
Pause-and-serve Auto pause with drip stop valve, stated
Keep-warm Warming plate, length not stated
Auto shut-off Not stated
Filter Permanent fine mesh; takes basket-style paper filters
Dishwasher safe Carafe and lid, top rack
Dimensions 9.5 H x 7.0 L x 6.0 W in
Footprint About 42.0 sq in (our arithmetic)
Weight Not stated
Best Sellers Rank #58,104 overall; #76 in Coffee Machines

Why We Recommend It

Its filter description is the most useful on the page. “The included permanent fine mesh filter keeps coffee grounds out of your cup and is easy to clean — compatible with standard basket-style paper filters (sold separately) as well.” No other listing tells you which paper filters fit. That matters more than it sounds: mesh filters let more oils and fine particles through, which some people like and some do not, and a basket that takes paper gives you the choice.

It counts its tank in cups, not ounces. “The 5-cup capacity water tank features a clear easy-view window with level indicators.” That is the most direct statement of a reservoir on the page after the Elite Gourmet’s, and it gives no volume. If Tasty’s cup matches the 5-ounce cup of the listings that do state one, the tank would hold about 25 ounces by our arithmetic, but the listing does not say so.

The pause has a named mechanism. “Remove the glass carafe mid-brew to pour a cup without making a mess — the built-in drip stop valve automatically pauses the brewing cycle.” Several listings promise a pause; the Tasty is one of few to say what does the pausing. The “warming plate keeps your coffee hot after brewing is complete”, with no time limit and no stated shut-off. Operation is “the flip of a simple on/off switch”.

It is among the smaller machines. The spec table gives 9.5 inches high, 7.0 long and 6.0 wide, about 42.0 square inches by our arithmetic, fourth-smallest on the page. No weight is listed. The glass carafe and lid are “dishwasher safe (top rack only)”. The manufacturer field names Epoca.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #58,104 overall and #76 in Coffee Machines. No warranty is stated. If you want the option of paper and mesh in the same basket, and a pause with a named valve, it is the listing that describes both; you will be guessing about the volume and the shut-off.

Pros

  • Mesh filter also takes basket-style paper filters
  • Drip stop valve named for the pause
  • Warming plate stated
  • Carafe and lid top-rack dishwasher safe
  • About 42.0 sq in footprint
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • No volume in ounces or millilitres
  • Auto shut-off not stated
  • Keep-warm length not stated
  • No weight listed
  • Rank #58,104 overall
  • No warranty stated

Best for: A buyer who wants to switch between mesh and paper filters on a small footprint.

10. Amaste Retro 5 Cup Coffee Maker with Three Brewing Modes — Brew Strength Pick

Retro styled pale blue drip coffee maker with a rounded body and a glass carafe

The only brew-strength control and the shortest stated shut-off here, in the heaviest body.

Key Specifications

Stated volume Not stated
Ounces per cup Not calculable
Reservoir Clear level markings, size not stated
Brew strength Mild, Medium, Strong
Pause-and-serve “Anti-drip feature”; mid-brew pour not described
Keep-warm Warming plate, stated
Auto shut-off After 30 minutes, stated
Filter Reusable, detachable
Dimensions 6.3 x 7.8 x 10.8 in (bullet and spec table agree)
Footprint About 49.1 sq in (our arithmetic)
Weight 4.39 lb
Warranty 1 year

Why We Recommend It

It is the only machine here that lets you choose a strength. “This coffee pot offers customizable brewing strength, including Mild, Medium, and Strong options.” The listing pairs it with a “spray head design” that “ensures even water distribution over the coffee grounds”. It does not explain how the strength setting works. On drip machines it usually slows the flow so the water spends longer in the grounds, but the listing does not say, so treat it as a stated control rather than a known method.

Its shut-off is the shortest stated on the page. “For safety, the coffee maker automatically shuts off after 30 minutes to prevent overheating.” The programmable Mr. Coffee and the Amazon Basics wait two hours. Thirty minutes on a warming plate is enough for two mugs in a row and not much more. If you prefer coffee off a hotplate to be fresh rather than stewed, a short shut-off is a feature; if you drink slowly, it is a limit.

It gives a cup count and no volume. The title says “5 Cup Coffee Pot”; the carafe and tank “feature clear level markings”; no ounces or millilitres are given anywhere. Its pause is also less clear than most. The listing mentions an “anti-drip feature” but does not say you can pull the carafe mid-brew, so we do not count it among the eight with a stated pause-and-serve.

It is heavy for its size. The listed weight is 4.39 pounds, about 1.5 times the next heaviest, the 2.93-pound Mr. Coffee Mini Brew, by our arithmetic. The bullet and spec table agree on 6.3 by 7.8 by 10.8 inches, about 49.1 square inches of counter. The listing’s pitch is design: “MAKE YOUR COFFEE MAKER TO BE A FOCAL POINT IN ANYWHERE”. A reusable filter, a spoon and a manual are included.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amaste, ranks #48,071 overall and #66 in Coffee Machines, and comes with a 1-year warranty. It sits at the premium end of this page. Buy it for the strength choice and the look; accept an undefined cup and a pause the listing does not quite promise.

Pros

  • Only brew-strength choice here: Mild, Medium, Strong
  • Auto shut-off after 30 minutes stated
  • Warming plate and reusable filter
  • Dimensions consistent across fields
  • Retro design
  • 1-year warranty

Cons

  • No volume stated
  • Mid-brew pour not described
  • Heaviest here, 4.39 lb
  • Shortest stated shut-off
  • Sold by the brand, not Amazon.com
  • Premium end of this page

Best for: A buyer who wants to set the strength and keep a styled machine on show.

What a “Cup” Means on Each Listing

The table below sets out every capacity figure each listing gives, where it gives it, and what it works out to. Everything in the last three columns is our arithmetic: the stated volume divided by the stated cup count, converted at 29.57 millilitres per US fluid ounce, and then counted in 12-ounce mugs and 8-ounce measuring cups.

Machine Cups stated Volume stated Per cup (ours) 12 oz mugs (ours) 8 oz cups (ours)
Mr. Coffee Programmable 5 25 oz 5.0 oz / 148 ml 2.1 3.1
Mr. Coffee Mini Brew 5 25 oz 5.0 oz / 148 ml 2.1 3.1
Amazon Basics 5 0.8 qt (25.6 oz) 5.1 oz / 151 ml 2.1 3.2
Sykaffe 5 25 oz 5.0 oz / 148 ml 2.1 3.1
Aiosa 4 20 oz 5.0 oz / 148 ml 1.7 2.5
Elite Gourmet 4 32 ounce (size field) 8.0 oz / 237 ml, if right 2.7, if right 4.0, if right
KRUPS 5 Not stated — — —
Holstein 5 Not stated — — —
Tasty 5 Not stated — — —
Amaste 5 Not stated — — —

Five listings agree within a tenth of an ounce. Two brands, two Mr. Coffee models, a store brand and a 4-cup maker all land on a cup of 5.0 or 5.1 ounces. That is not a coincidence of rounding. It is the drip industry’s working cup, smaller than a measuring cup and much smaller than a mug, and it is why a “5-cup” coffee maker fills two mugs rather than five.

The 8-ounce reading would change the category. If the Elite Gourmet’s 32 ounce size field is the brew volume, its 4-cup machine would out-brew every 5-cup machine on the page by about 7 ounces, our arithmetic. Nothing else in its listing supports that: its reservoir is described in cups, not ounces, and its title calls it a 4-cup maker like the 20-ounce Aiosa. We treat 32 ounces as unconfirmed and suggest planning on the smaller figure.

Four listings leave the cup undefined. The KRUPS, Holstein, Tasty and Amaste give a cup count and nothing to convert. If their cups match the five that do state a volume, each would brew about 25 ounces by our arithmetic. That is a reasonable guess, not a figure, and it is the one question worth asking the seller before you buy any of the four.

The 4-cup versus 5-cup choice is one cup of 5 ounces. On the stated listings, a 4-cup maker brews about 20 ounces and a 5-cup about 25: the difference is roughly 148 millilitres, under half a mug. If you drink one large mug, a 4-cup maker is enough. If two people each want a 12-ounce mug, you need the 5-cup, and even then there is only an ounce to spare. If you want three full mugs, neither is big enough; see our 12-cup coffee maker guide for the next size up. Our small drip coffee maker roundup covers some 5-cup machines not listed here, along with a few in-between sizes.

About 25 oz from a 5-cup pot fills two 12 oz mugs with an ounce to spare, by our arithmetic.

Five Features, Stated or Not

At this size, the differences between machines are a handful of conveniences. The table logs each one exactly as the listing states it. “Not stated” means the listing is silent, not that the feature is absent.

Machine Pause-and-serve Auto shut-off Reusable filter Keep-warm Footprint (ours)
Mr. Coffee Programmable Yes 2 hours Yes Not named About 74.3 sq in
Mr. Coffee Mini Brew Yes Not stated Yes Not named About 70.0 sq in
Amazon Basics Yes 2 hours Not stated Not named About 37.6 sq in
Sykaffe Not stated Not stated as such Yes Up to 2 hours About 40.8 sq in
Aiosa Yes Not stated Yes Yes, length not stated About 37.7 sq in
Elite Gourmet Yes Not stated Yes Yes, length not stated About 72.0 sq in
KRUPS Yes Not stated as such Yes Up to 30 minutes About 46.1 sq in
Holstein Yes Not stated Yes (cone basket) Not stated About 48.0 sq in
Tasty Yes Not stated Yes (also takes paper) Yes, length not stated About 42.0 sq in
Amaste Anti-drip only 30 minutes Yes Yes, length not stated About 49.1 sq in

Pause-and-serve is close to standard. Eight of ten listings say in words that you can pull the carafe mid-brew. The Amaste mentions an anti-drip feature without describing a mid-brew pour, and the Sykaffe does not mention it at all. On a 25-ounce pot, the pause matters less than on a big machine, because the whole brew is short, but it is still the feature that lets you take the first mug before the second is done.

Only three listings give a shut-off time. The programmable Mr. Coffee and the Amazon Basics say two hours. The Amaste says 30 minutes. The Sykaffe and KRUPS describe how long their hotplates keep warm, two hours and 30 minutes, which may amount to the same thing but is not stated as a shut-off. The other five give nothing, and the Mini Brew’s listing tells you its light is there to remind you to switch it off. If an unattended hotplate worries you, that narrows the list to three, or five if you read the keep-warm limits generously.

Nine say a reusable filter is included. The exception is the Amazon Basics, which describes a removable basket only. Two add useful detail: the Holstein names a cone basket, and the Tasty says its mesh filter takes basket-style paper filters too. If you plan on paper, the filter shape is the thing to confirm, because cone and basket papers do not swap.

Six name a hotplate, and the lengths vary fourfold where given. The Sykaffe says up to two hours, the KRUPS up to 30 minutes, and the Elite, Aiosa, Tasty and Amaste name a warming plate or keep-warm without a time. The two Mr. Coffees and the Amazon Basics never name one, though the two-hour shut-offs on two of them imply something stays on. The Holstein says nothing either way.

Footprint: Half the Machines Are Half the Size

Every listing here calls itself compact. The listed dimensions say otherwise for three of them. Multiplying length by width from each spec table, which is our arithmetic, splits the ten into two clear groups.

Machine Length x width (listed) Footprint (ours) Height (listed) Weight (listed)
Amazon Basics 7.08 x 5.31 in About 37.6 sq in 9.45 in 1.98 lb
Aiosa 7.09 x 5.31 in About 37.7 sq in 9.25 in 1.98 lb
Sykaffe 7.68 x 5.31 in About 40.8 sq in 10.25 in 2.65 lb
Tasty 7.0 x 6.0 in About 42.0 sq in 9.5 in Not stated
KRUPS 5.71 x 8.07 in About 46.1 sq in 10.08 in 2.78 lb
Holstein 6.0 x 8.0 in About 48.0 sq in 9.76 in 1.98 lb
Amaste 6.3 x 7.8 in About 49.1 sq in 10.8 in 4.39 lb
Mr. Coffee Mini Brew 9.8 x 7.2 in About 70.0 sq in 10.7 in 2.93 lb
Elite Gourmet 8.0 x 9.0 in About 72.0 sq in 6.0 in (doubtful) 2.12 lb
Mr. Coffee Programmable 10.0 x 7.4 in About 74.3 sq in 11.0 in Field unusable

Seven machines sit between about 37.6 and 49.1 square inches; three between about 70.0 and 74.3. The two Mr. Coffees and the Elite Gourmet take nearly twice the counter of the Amazon Basics or the Aiosa. The irony is that the two Mr. Coffees are the best-ranked machines here. Shoppers are buying the brand and the stated 25 ounces, not the smallest box.

Three machines share a 5.31-inch width. The Amazon Basics, Sykaffe and Aiosa all list 5.31 inches wide, and the Amazon Basics and Aiosa differ in length by a hundredth of an inch. Shared dimensions can mean a shared factory design, but the listings do not say so, and their feature lists differ: the Aiosa states 650 watts and an anti-drip pause, the Sykaffe a two-hour keep-warm, the Amazon Basics a two-hour shut-off. Buy on the features each one states.

Height matters under cabinets. Listed heights run from 9.25 inches on the Aiosa to 11.0 on the programmable Mr. Coffee, setting aside the Elite Gourmet’s doubtful 6.0. The KRUPS is top-fill, so it needs room above the lid to open. A typical gap between a worktop and a wall cabinet is a little over a foot, so all of these should fit, but measure if your cabinets are low.

Footprints here run from about 37.6 to about 74.3 sq in; the best sellers are among the largest.

Best Alternatives

A 4- or 5-cup drip maker is the right tool for one or two people. If that is not quite your household, one of these may fit better.

Alternative Why Consider It Better For Main Trade-Off
A 12-cup drip maker (see our 12-cup coffee maker guide) About 60 oz at the same 5 oz cup, by our arithmetic Three or more mugs, or guests Larger footprint; wasteful for one mug
A single-serve machine (see our single serve coffee maker roundup) Brews one mug at a time, no pot on a hotplate One person, one mug, varied drinks Pods or a refill basket per mug
A programmable drip maker (see our programmable coffee maker guide) Timers and more settings on larger pots Coffee ready on waking for a household Bigger machines; only one 5-cup timer here
A full-size drip maker (see our drip coffee maker roundup) More brew controls and carafe options Daily coffee for a family Counter space and brew time

What the Step Up Buys

Every machine here does the same basic job: heat water, drip it through grounds, collect about 25 ounces in a glass pot. Moving up the page buys features, not capacity. The tiers below are by what the listings state, not by brand.

  • Switch and pot. An on/off switch, a glass carafe, a pause and a filter. The Mr. Coffee Mini Brew, Holstein and Tasty sit here. You switch off by hand.
  • A stated shut-off. The Amazon Basics and Amaste add a stated shut-off time, two hours and 30 minutes. The Sykaffe and KRUPS state how long their hotplates hold, which serves much the same purpose.
  • A timer. The programmable Mr. Coffee adds Brew Later, the only timer on the page, with a two-hour shut-off and a reusable filter.
  • Build and control. The KRUPS adds a stainless-steel body and a two-year warranty. The Amaste adds three brew strengths and retro styling. Neither states a volume, so the step up does not buy you more certainty about size.

None of the steps buys more coffee. Every machine that states a volume brews 20 to 25.6 ounces, and the premium machines are among the four that state none. If you need more than two mugs, the answer is a bigger category, not a better 5-cup machine.

A filter basket filled with fresh ground coffee on a light surface
Nine of ten listings include a reusable filter; if you want paper, check cone or basket shape first.

What to Check Before You Buy

Find the Ounces, Not the Cups

A coffee maker cup on these listings is about 5 ounces, by our arithmetic from the five that state a volume. Multiply the cup count by five to estimate the pot, then divide by your mug size. A 5-cup maker gives about 25 ounces: two 12-ounce mugs, just. If a listing gives no ounces, ask.

Treat Odd Volume Fields With Caution

The Elite Gourmet’s size field says 32 ounces on a 4-cup machine. That would make an 8-ounce cup, unlike every other stated listing. When a size field and the bullets disagree, plan on the smaller figure until the seller confirms.

Decide Whether You Need Pause-and-Serve

Eight listings say you can pour mid-brew. If you take the first mug before the pot finishes, choose one of those. The Sykaffe does not mention it, and the Amaste mentions only an anti-drip feature.

Check the Shut-Off Time

Two hours on the programmable Mr. Coffee and the Amazon Basics, 30 minutes on the Amaste. The Sykaffe and KRUPS give keep-warm limits instead. Five state nothing, and the Mini Brew relies on an indicator light to remind you.

Confirm the Filter and Its Shape

Nine include a reusable filter; the Amazon Basics does not say so. If you want paper, the Tasty says basket-style papers fit and the Holstein names a cone basket. The other listings leave filter shape unstated.

Measure the Counter, Not Just the Height

Footprints run from about 37.6 to about 74.3 square inches by our arithmetic. If space is tight, the Amazon Basics, Aiosa, Sykaffe and Tasty all come in at about 42 square inches or less. Heights run from 9.25 to 11.0 inches, and the KRUPS fills from the top.

Match the Hotplate to How You Drink

If you drink both mugs straight away, a 30-minute keep-warm is enough. If the pot sits through the morning, the Sykaffe’s stated two hours is the longest here. Remember that 25 ounces on a hotplate for hours will taste stewed whatever the machine.

Common Mistakes

  • Reading “5 cups” as five mugs. The five listings that state a volume put a cup at about 5 oz; a 5-cup pot fills two 12 oz mugs.
  • Trusting a size field over the bullets. The Elite Gourmet’s 32 ounce field would mean an 8 oz cup, unlike all five stated listings.
  • Assuming every machine switches itself off. Only three state a shut-off time: two hours, two hours and 30 minutes.
  • Assuming a reusable filter comes in the box. Nine say so; the Amazon Basics describes only a removable basket.
  • Taking “compact” at its word. The two Mr. Coffees take about 70 to 74 sq in by our arithmetic, nearly twice the Amazon Basics.
  • Buying a 4-cup maker for two people. At about 20 oz, it pours one and two-thirds 12 oz mugs.
  • Counting on a long keep-warm. The KRUPS stops at 30 minutes; only the Sykaffe states two hours.
  • Buying paper filters before checking the shape. The Holstein uses a cone basket; the Tasty takes basket-style papers.

Who Should Buy Which

Buy the Mr. Coffee Programmable 5-Cup if you want two mugs ready when you wake. 25 oz stated, about 5 oz a cup, with the only timer on the page, a two-hour shut-off, Auto Pause and a reusable filter. Accept the largest footprint here, about 74.3 square inches.

Buy the Mr. Coffee Mini Brew Switch if you want the best-selling two-mug brewer. The same 25 oz, Auto Pause and a reusable filter, at the best rank on the page. Accept that no shut-off is stated, only a light to remind you.

Buy the Amazon Basics if counter space is the limit. About 37.6 square inches, a 0.8 qt pot and a two-hour shut-off. Budget for paper filters, because a reusable one is not stated.

Buy the Sykaffe if the second mug comes an hour after the first. 25 oz and a stated two-hour keep-warm on a narrow base. Accept that pause-and-serve is not mentioned.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best 5 cup coffee maker?

For most buyers, the Mr. Coffee Programmable 5-Cup. It states its volume, 25 ounces, which works out to about 5 ounces per cup by our arithmetic, and it states every convenience this guide counts except a named hotplate: Auto Pause, a two-hour automatic shut-off, a reusable filter and a Brew Later timer, the only timer on the page. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #6 in Coffee Machines. Its drawback is size: about 74.3 square inches of counter, the largest footprint here. If space is tight, the Amazon Basics 5 Cup states a 0.8 quart pot and a two-hour shut-off on about 37.6 square inches, though it does not say a reusable filter is included. If popularity matters most, the Mr. Coffee Mini Brew Switch holds the best rank on the page, with the same 25 ounces, but states no automatic shut-off.

How many ounces is a 5 cup coffee maker?

On the listings that say, about 25 ounces. Both Mr. Coffee machines and the Sykaffe state 25 ounces for five cups. The Amazon Basics states 0.8 quarts, which is 25.6 ounces by our arithmetic. So a coffee maker cup is about 5 ounces, roughly 148 millilitres, not the 8 ounces of a measuring cup. A full 5-cup pot is about 740 millilitres, which fills two 12-ounce mugs with an ounce to spare, or just over three 8-ounce cups. Four of the 5-cup makers here, the KRUPS, Holstein, Tasty and Amaste, do not state a volume at all. If they use the same cup, they would also brew about 25 ounces, but that is an assumption, and worth checking with the seller. Whatever the label, measure your usual mug before you decide whether five cups is enough.

Why is a coffee maker cup only 5 ounces?

Because the cup marked on coffee makers is a brewing unit, not a measuring cup or a mug. On the five listings here that state a volume, the cup works out to 5.0 or 5.1 ounces by our arithmetic, and that consistency across Mr. Coffee, Amazon Basics, Sykaffe and Aiosa suggests a shared convention rather than an accident. Some of the water poured into the reservoir is also absorbed by the grounds and lost as steam, so the coffee in the pot is a little less than the water you put in. The practical effect is that cup counts on drip makers overstate how many mugs you get. A 5-cup machine fills about two 12-ounce mugs; a 4-cup machine about one and two-thirds. When comparing coffee makers of any size, look for a stated volume in ounces or millilitres and work from that rather than the cup count.

What is the best small 5 cup coffee maker?

By listed dimensions, the Amazon Basics 5 Cup Drip Coffee Maker. Its spec table gives 7.08 by 5.31 inches, about 37.6 square inches of counter by our arithmetic, the smallest footprint here and about half that of either Mr. Coffee. It states a 0.8 quart pot, about 25.6 ounces, a two-hour automatic shut-off and auto-pause, and it is 9.45 inches tall. Its one gap is the filter: the listing describes a removable basket but not a reusable filter, so plan on paper. Close behind are the Sykaffe, at about 40.8 square inches with a stated 25 ounces and a two-hour keep-warm, and the Tasty, at about 42.0 square inches with a mesh filter that also takes basket-style paper. The 4-cup Aiosa matches the Amazon Basics almost exactly at about 37.7 square inches, but brews about 20 ounces.

What is the best 5 cup drip coffee maker with auto shut-off?

Three listings here state a shut-off time. The Mr. Coffee Programmable 5-Cup and the Amazon Basics 5 Cup both shut off after two hours, and the Amaste after 30 minutes. Of those, the Mr. Coffee Programmable also states 25 ounces, Auto Pause, a reusable filter and a brew timer, which makes it the most complete. The Amazon Basics is the compact choice, at about 37.6 square inches, but does not state a reusable filter. Two more describe hotplate limits rather than a shut-off: the Sykaffe keeps warm for up to two hours and the KRUPS for up to 30 minutes, which may amount to the same thing but is not stated in those words. The best-selling Mr. Coffee Mini Brew Switch states no shut-off at all; its listing says the power light is there to remind you to switch it off.

What is the best 4 cup coffee maker?

The Aiosa 4 Cup Mini Drip Coffee Maker has the most consistent listing. It states 20 ounces for four cups, which is a 5-ounce cup by our arithmetic, the same unit the 5-cup listings use. It is also the only machine on the page to state its power, 650 watts, and it lists an anti-drip pause, an automatic keep-warm, a permanent filter, a footprint of about 37.7 square inches and a one-year warranty. Its weakness is popularity: it ranks #115 in Coffee Machines. The Elite Gourmet EHC4128 ranks far better, #8 in Coffee Machines, and states pause, keep-warm and a reusable filter, but its size field says 32 ounces, which would mean an 8-ounce cup and conflicts with every other stated listing. Plan on about 20 ounces from either. Remember that 20 ounces fills one 12-ounce mug and two-thirds of another.

Is a 4 cup or 5 cup coffee maker better for two people?

For two people who each want a 12-ounce mug, a 5-cup maker. On the stated listings, a 5-cup machine brews about 25 ounces, which covers two 12-ounce mugs with an ounce left over. A 4-cup machine brews about 20 ounces, which leaves the second mug about two-thirds full. The difference is one coffee-maker cup, about 5 ounces or 148 millilitres by our arithmetic. If you drink smaller cups, say 8 ounces, a 4-cup maker gives two and a half, which is enough for two. If either of you wants a refill, neither size will do it in one brew, and a larger machine makes more sense. Footprint is not a reason to choose the 4-cup: the smallest 5-cup machine here, the Amazon Basics, takes about the same counter space as the 4-cup Aiosa.

Do small coffee makers need special filters?

Nine of the ten listings here say a reusable or permanent filter is included, so many buyers will never need paper. The Amazon Basics is the exception: it describes a removable filter basket but does not say a reusable filter comes with it. If you prefer paper, which traps more of the oils and fine particles than mesh, the filter shape matters. The Tasty states that its basket takes standard basket-style paper filters. The Holstein names a cone filter basket, which takes cone papers instead. The other listings do not say which shape they use, so check the basket before buying a box of filters. Small machines often use smaller basket papers than full-size makers, and a full-size basket filter folded into a small basket can collapse and let grounds through. When in doubt, use the reusable filter supplied and rinse it after each brew.

20 oz stated, a 5 oz cup that matches the 5-cup listings, 650W and an anti-drip pause.

A cup, on a coffee maker, is about 5 ounces. Five of these ten listings state a volume, and every one works out between 5.0 and 5.1 ounces per cup by our arithmetic. A 5-cup machine brews about 25 ounces, two 12-ounce mugs. A 4-cup brews about 20, one and two-thirds. The one listing that suggests an 8-ounce cup, the Elite Gourmet, does it in a size field its own bullets do not support.

Four listings leave the cup undefined. The KRUPS, Holstein, Tasty and Amaste state a count and no volume. They may well brew the same 25 ounces, but the only way to know is to ask.

After capacity, the features decide. Eight state pause-and-serve. Nine state a reusable filter. Only three give a shut-off time, and only one has a timer. Footprints run from about 37.6 to about 74.3 square inches, and the two best-ranked machines are two of the three largest.

If you buy one machine from this page, make it the Mr. Coffee Programmable 5-Cup: 25 ounces stated, about 5 ounces a cup, with a timer, a two-hour shut-off, Auto Pause and a reusable filter, sold by Amazon.com. If counter space is tight, the Amazon Basics gives you a stated 0.8 quart pot and a two-hour shut-off in half the space; if one large mug is all you drink, the Aiosa is the 4-cup listing whose numbers add up.
