Spills Still Reach the Best Waffle Maker With Removable Plates

Removable plates are sold as the answer to the worst job in waffle making. A fixed-plate iron has to be cleaned where it sits, with a damp cloth and a soft brush worked into every pocket while you keep water away from the element. Lift the plates out and that job moves to the sink. All ten waffle makers on this page put removable or detachable plates in the listing, from a 4-inch Dash mini to a 13.7 pound GreenPan with two sets of plates stored in its base.

The second promise is the dishwasher, and here the listings nearly agree. Nine of the ten say in words that their plates can go in a dishwasher. Hamilton Beach’s Easy Flip puts it in capitals: “REMOVABLE GRIDS AND DRIP TRAY ARE DISHWASHER SAFE.” All-Clad puts “Dishwasher Safe” in its title. The one listing that never mentions a dishwasher is the KRUPS 4-Slice, which holds the second-best Best Sellers Rank on the page. It says the plates are removable and nonstick for “quick and convenient cleanup”, and stops there.

No listing here says hand-wash only. Four mention hand cleaning as an option or a preference. Hamilton Beach’s Double Flip says the grids remove “for easy cleaning by hand or in the dishwasher”. FineMade and Metine offer a wipe-down first and the dishwasher second. And the Dash MultiMaker, the best-selling waffle maker on the page, says its plates are dishwasher safe in the same sentence that tells you to “hand wash to keep the nonstick coating at its best.” Dishwasher safe, in other words, does not always mean dishwasher recommended.

The real gap is what happens to the batter that never reaches the plates. Waffle batter rises. Overfill an iron, or close it a little hard, and the excess runs out of the seam, across the housing and onto the counter. Removable plates do nothing for that. The housing, the hinge and the outer lip stay on the counter and have to be wiped where they are. One listing in ten names a drip tray, the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip, and says the tray goes in the dishwasher with the grids. One more names a moat, GreenPan’s “EXTRA-LARGE MOAT” that frames the plates on all sides. The other eight say nothing about overflow at all.

Getting the plates out is just as thinly described. Only one listing names how its plates release: the Dash MultiMaker’s “Release Tabs”. GreenPan says “Pop the plates out”, which describes the action, not the mechanism. The other eight say the plates are removable, detachable or easily removed, and leave the button, latch or clip to the manual. Only Hamilton Beach’s Easy Flip tells you to let the machine cool before you take them out.

And removable often means interchangeable. Six of the ten sell their plates as a kit: GreenPan’s Belgian and classic waffle sets, Dash’s 5 and 7 plate minis, Baker’s Friend’s 4-in-1, and two 3-in-1 machines that swap a waffle plate for sandwich and grill plates. Counts are not always consistent. The 7-plate Dash calls itself a 7-plate set in its title and promises “Six 4” removable plates” in its first bullet.

So this guide sorts the ten by what each listing actually says about cleaning: dishwasher claims as worded, hand-wash advice, drip trays and moats, how the plates release, and what plates come in the box. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup; popularity below is Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank only. For fixed-plate irons and the wider field, see our main waffle maker roundup.

All ten were captured on 5 October 2026. Their overall Best Sellers Ranks run from #1,457 to #73,073, and the only listing with a dishwasher-safe drip tray sits fourth, at #7,848.

Best Sellers Ranks and specifications are taken from each manufacturer’s Amazon listing as displayed on 5 October 2026 through a United States connection, and may change. Cleaning claims are quoted or paraphrased from each listing’s bullets and title. “Hand wash advised” means the listing recommends hand washing while also calling the plates dishwasher safe; no listing here says hand-wash only. “Not stated” under Overflow Catch means the listing names no drip tray, moat or overflow channel; it does not mean the machine has none. Plate counts are given only where the listing gives them. The FineMade row shows its category rank because its overall rank, #11,955, would crowd the cell; every overall and category rank is in the detail cards. Ranks are Best Sellers Ranks as returned on 5 October 2026. Six machines were sold by Amazon.com at capture; the FineMade, the 7-plate DASH, the Baker’s Friend and the Metine were sold by third-party sellers. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for any product here.

How We Chose These Ten

We researched current listings, compared manufacturer specifications and documentation, and read each listing’s claims about its plates, its cleaning and its overflow handling line by line. We did not carry out hands-on testing, and nothing below is presented as measured performance data. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup. We used Amazon Best Sellers Rank, buy-box stock and listing specifications instead, and nothing on this page describes or implies how owners have scored these waffle makers.

  • Removable plates stated in the listing — every machine here says in its title or bullets that its plates or grids are removable or detachable. A fixed-plate iron that only claims to be “easy to clean” was not in the running, however popular.
  • Dishwasher claims recorded as worded — we logged whether each listing says the plates can go in a dishwasher, whether it also suggests hand washing, and whether it says nothing. A listing that says nothing is marked not stated, even where the plates might well survive a dishwasher.
  • Overflow handling counted separately — a drip tray, a moat or any channel that catches batter outside the plates was logged only where the listing names it. Removable plates clean the plates; they do not clean the housing.
  • Release mechanism as stated — a named tab, button or latch was recorded where the listing names it. Most do not.
  • Plate counts and types as stated — for kits with interchangeable plates, we report the count and the types the listing gives, and we report both figures where a listing contradicts itself.
  • Coatings as stated — ceramic, PTFE or plain “nonstick”, with any free-from claims quoted. A coating type the listing does not give is marked not stated.
  • Popularity from Best Sellers Rank only — ranks are quoted exactly as returned on 5 October 2026, overall and in Waffle Irons. Ranks move constantly.
  • Verified stock and seller — each product was the buy-box offer and in stock on amazon.com on 5 October 2026.

General cleaning advice on this page, such as letting plates cool before you handle them or keeping abrasive pads off nonstick, is general guidance unless we say a listing states it. Only one listing, the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip, tells you to let the machine cool first.

The Ten Removable-Plate Waffle Makers in Detail

1. Hamilton Beach Easy Flip Belgian Waffle Maker With Shade Control (26031) — Best Overall

Why We Recommend It

This is the one listing on the page that deals with the mess outside the plates. Its third bullet reads, in capitals, “EASY CLEANUP — REMOVABLE GRIDS AND DRIP TRAY ARE DISHWASHER SAFE.” Nine of ten machines here claim dishwasher-safe plates. Only this one names a tray to catch what runs out of them, and only this one says the tray goes in the dishwasher too. On a flip iron, where batter can shift as the plates turn over, that tray is where the overflow is meant to go instead of onto the counter.

It is also the only listing that tells you to wait. The same bullet says to “simply let the nonstick waffle maker cool, then remove the ceramic nonstick grids and drip tray.” Every removable plate here comes off a heating element, and most listings skip the step of letting it cool. This one writes it in. It does not say how the grids release, by button, tab or latch; that detail is left to the manual.

The coating is described, not just named. The grids are Durathon ceramic nonstick, which the listing says is “four times more durable than traditional nonstick, won’t crack or peel, and are PTFE and PFOA free.” The durability multiple is the brand’s claim, and the listing gives no test behind it. The PTFE-free statement is the useful part for anyone avoiding conventional nonstick; our non-toxic waffle maker guide goes further into what those labels do and do not cover.

The trade-off is capacity. This is a single flip iron: one Belgian waffle per cycle, flipped by the handle during cooking for what the listing calls “thick, fluffy waffles.” It gives no waffle diameter or pocket depth, and no wattage. Browning is adjustable “From light to dark”, without a number of settings. The stainless steel housing measures 10.5 by 16.0 by 9.25 inches and weighs 6.6 pounds as listed, and the spec table states a one-year warranty.

Why it leads. It is sold by Amazon.com, ranks #7,848 overall and #20 in Waffle Irons, and states more about cleaning than any other listing here: dishwasher-safe grids, a dishwasher-safe drip tray, a cooling step and a coating without PTFE. If a family needs four waffles at once, look at the GreenPan or the KRUPS. If the counter is what you clean most after waffles, this is the listing that addresses it.

Pros

  • Only drip tray on the page, stated
  • Grids and tray both dishwasher safe
  • Only listing that says let it cool first
  • Ceramic nonstick, PTFE and PFOA free
  • One-year warranty stated
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • One waffle per cycle
  • No waffle size or pocket depth stated
  • No wattage stated
  • Browning levels not numbered
  • Release mechanism not stated
  • Durability multiple is unexplained

Best for: A household that wants every removable part, including the drip tray, to go straight in the dishwasher and is happy making one Belgian waffle at a time.

2. GreenPan Elite 4-Square Waffle Maker, Ceramic Nonstick Plates, Graphite — Best Premium

Graphite-coloured square waffle maker with a digital display and a four-square waffle plate

Two sets of dishwasher-safe plates, a moat around them, and storage for the spare set in the base.

Key Specifications

Plates Removable cast plates; two waffle sets, Belgian and classic
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe, stated
Overflow catch Extra-large moat on all sides, stated
Release “Pop the plates out”; mechanism not stated
Coating Thermolon Volt ceramic; free of PFAS, PFOA, lead, cadmium
Controls XL LCD display; one-touch dial; shade and crunch control
Capacity Four squares
Storage Spare plates store in the bottom of the unit
Size and weight 17.13 x 14.37 x 9.96 in; 13.7 lb
Wattage Not stated
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #59,075 overall; #123 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

The GreenPan is the only machine here that names a barrier around its plates. “EXTRA-LARGE MOAT: To prevent batter from leaking, the large moat frames the plates on all sides.” It is not a removable tray like the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip’s, and the listing does not say whether the moat can be washed in a sink or must be wiped in place. But it is the second of only two listings on the page that admit batter can escape the plates, and the only one with a catch on all four sides.

The plates are cast, removable, dishwasher safe, and come in two sets. “TWO SETS OF WAFFLE PLATES: Perfect classic American-style waffles and thicker Belgian waffles.” Swapping sets is the point of removable plates here as much as cleaning them. The listing then solves the problem every interchangeable kit creates, where to put the spare set: “Belgian and Classic Waffle Plates store in the bottom of the unit for easy access.” The 7-plate DASH offers a storage case; no other listing gives the spare plates a home inside the machine.

The dishwasher line is worded carefully. “DISHWASHER SAFE: Pop the plates out and toss in the dishwasher for tough messes.” The words “for tough messes” imply the dishwasher is for the hard cases, not the default, and the listing also says the coating “cleans easily”. The coating is Thermolon Volt, described as “diamond-infused ceramic nonstick” and “free of PFAS, PFOA, lead or cadmium”, the broadest free-from list on the page.

It is the biggest and heaviest machine here. The listing gives 17.13 by 14.37 by 9.96 inches and 13.7 pounds, a little heavier than the All-Clad’s 13.27. Controls are an XL LCD display and a one-touch dial with shade and crunch settings. Wattage is not stated, and neither is a warranty. The listing does not say how the plates release beyond popping out, so check the manual for whether that is a button or a latch.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #59,075 overall and #123 in Waffle Irons, near the bottom of this page, and it sits at the premium end. What the money buys, on the listing’s own terms, is a four-square machine with two plate styles, a moat against leaks, and a place to keep the plates you are not using. If the moat and the spare-plate storage matter less than the drip tray, the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip covers the cleaning job for far less.

Pros

  • Only stated moat, framing all four sides
  • Two waffle sets: Belgian and classic
  • Spare plates store in the base
  • Dishwasher safe, stated
  • PFAS, PFOA, lead and cadmium free, stated
  • LCD display and one-touch dial

Cons

  • Heaviest here, 13.7 lb
  • Largest footprint, 17.13 x 14.37 in
  • Wattage and warranty not stated
  • Moat cleaning not described
  • Release mechanism not stated
  • Rank #123 in Waffle Irons

Best for: A buyer with counter and cupboard space who wants two waffle styles from one machine, a moat against leaks, and plates that store inside it.

3. Dash MultiMaker Mini Waffle Maker, 5 Removable Waffle & Griddle Plates, Red — Best Budget

Small red round mini waffle maker with a lid and a stack of round interchangeable cooking plates

The best-selling machine here, and the only listing that names how its plates release.

Key Specifications

Plates 5 removable: classic waffle, heart waffle, mini griddle
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe, stated; hand wash advised for the coating
Overflow catch Not stated
Release Release Tabs, stated
Coating Nonstick; type not stated
Cook time About 3–4 minutes per waffle, stated
Controls Indicator light; no buttons or settings
Storage Cord wrap; non-slip feet
Size and weight 6.9 x 5.0 x 4.1 in; 2.9 lb
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #1,457 overall; #7 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

This is the only listing on the page that tells you how the plates come out. “Swap between Classic Waffle, Heart Waffle, and Mini Griddle Plates in seconds using the Release Tabs.” Every other machine here says removable, detachable or easily removed, and leaves the mechanism to the manual. On a mini with five plates to swap, a named tab is the difference between a quick change and a fiddle with a hot plate.

The cleaning line says two things at once. “Removable Plates are dishwasher safe; hand wash to keep the nonstick coating at its best.” That is the most honest sentence about dishwashers on the page. The plates will survive the machine, the listing says, and the coating will last longer if they do not go in. Detergent and high heat are hard on nonstick in general, and this is the only listing that says so about its own plates. Read every other “dishwasher safe” here with that sentence in mind.

Five plates, three types. The title gives “5 Removable Waffle & Griddle Plates” and the first bullet names classic waffle, heart waffle and mini griddle plates. The listing does not break the five down by type, so we cannot say how many of each are in the box. There is no overflow tray or moat named, and on a mini, a small overfill reaches the housing quickly. The listing gives no plate diameter; the 6.9 by 5.0 by 4.1 inch body puts it in the 4-inch mini class.

Simplicity is the design. “The Indicator Light shuts off when it is time to pour, no buttons or settings needed,” and each waffle cooks “in about 3-4 minutes.” There is no browning control. A built-in cord wrap, non-slip feet and a 2.9 pound weight suit a dorm, an RV or a small kitchen, and a recipe guide comes with it. For chaffles and other mini-iron uses, our mini waffle maker for chaffles guide compares the minis on their own terms.

Why it is the budget pick. It is sold by Amazon.com and holds the best rank on the page by a wide margin: #1,457 overall and #7 in Waffle Irons. It sits at the budget end, names its release mechanism, and is candid about the dishwasher. What it does not do is make a full-size waffle or catch overflow; for those, step up to the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip.

Pros

  • Best rank here, #7 in Waffle Irons
  • Only named release mechanism, Release Tabs
  • Dishwasher safe, with honest hand-wash advice
  • Classic, heart and griddle plates
  • 3–4 minutes per waffle, stated
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Mini size; plate diameter not stated
  • No overflow catch stated
  • No browning control
  • Split of the 5 plates by type not stated
  • Coating type not stated
  • Dishwasher use may shorten coating life, per the listing

Best for: A small household, dorm or RV kitchen that wants cheap, swappable mini plates and is willing to hand wash them most of the time.

4. All-Clad Stainless Steel Waffle Maker, 4 Section, 1600 Watts, Dishwasher Safe — Most Powerful

Brushed stainless steel square waffle maker with four deep waffle sections and a front control dial

Dishwasher safe in the title, 1600 watts on the label, and nothing on overflow.

Key Specifications

Plates Removable nonstick plates, four sections
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe, stated in title and bullets
Overflow catch Not stated
Release Not stated
Coating Nonstick; type not stated
Power 1600W, stated
Browning 6 levels, stated
Alerts Automatic alerts for pour and ready
Storage Stores upright
Size and weight 15.59 x 10.75 x 5.94 in; 13.27 lb
Warranty Limited All-Clad warranty
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #73,073 overall; #144 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

All-Clad puts the dishwasher in the title. The listing ends “Nonstick, 6 Browning Levels, Dishwasher Safe”, and the third bullet repeats it: “This waffle maker with removable plates features nonstick, dishwasher-safe plates.” It is the clearest dishwasher claim on the page after the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip, and unlike the Dash it attaches no hand-wash advice. It does not say what the nonstick coating is.

It is the most powerful machine here. 1600 watts is the highest stated figure on the page; the KRUPS, FineMade and Metine each state 1200W, and six listings give none. Wattage is not a cleaning spec, but on a four-section machine with deep pockets it helps the plates recover heat between batches. Six browning levels are stated, one more than the KRUPS and Metine, and automatic alerts signal when to pour batter and when waffles are ready.

Deep pockets cut both ways. The listing promises “deep waffles” with “pockets to hold extra toppings.” No depth figure is given. Deep pockets are exactly what makes a fixed-plate iron hard to clean, which is the case for removable plates on a machine like this. But deeper waffles take more batter, and more batter raises the odds of overflow, and the listing names no tray or moat. Budget a wipe of the housing after each batch.

It stores upright, and it is heavy. The listing gives 15.59 by 10.75 by 5.94 inches and 13.27 pounds, second only to the GreenPan. The upright storage claim matters on a heavy square machine: it stands on its end in a cupboard instead of lying flat. A limited All-Clad warranty is stated, without terms. The housing is stainless steel; the plates are nonstick, as most stainless waffle makers are inside, a point our stainless steel waffle maker roundup makes in detail.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #73,073 overall and #144 in Waffle Irons, the lowest on the page, and it sits at the premium end. It earns a place for power, six browning levels and a dishwasher claim in the title. Against the GreenPan, it gives up the second plate set, the moat and the PFAS-free statement; against the KRUPS, it adds the dishwasher claim the KRUPS leaves out.

Pros

  • Dishwasher safe in the title and bullets
  • Highest stated power, 1600W
  • 6 browning levels, stated
  • Automatic pour and ready alerts
  • Stores upright
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Lowest rank here, #73,073 overall
  • No overflow catch stated
  • Coating type not stated
  • Pocket depth not stated
  • 13.27 lb
  • Warranty terms not given

Best for: A family that wants four deep waffles at a time, the most stated power, and a dishwasher claim in writing, and has space to store a heavy machine upright.

5. Hamilton Beach Double Flip Belgian Waffle Maker (26201) — Best for Two at Once

Black double flip Belgian waffle maker with two stacked round cooking chambers and a D-shaped handle

Two flipped Belgian waffles at once, with grids that wash by hand or in the dishwasher.

Key Specifications

Plates Removable nonstick grids; grid count not stated
Dishwasher By hand or in the dishwasher, stated
Overflow catch Not stated
Release Not stated
Coating Nonstick; type not stated
Waffle size 7 in round, 0.92 in deep (listing prints “. 92”)
Capacity 1 or 2 waffles at a time
Controls Power and preheat indicator lights
Handle “D” shaped; hold, lock and flip
Size and weight 14.13 x 9.75 x 7.94 in; 9.13 lb
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #26,075 overall; #62 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

The Double Flip doubles the Easy Flip’s output and drops its drip tray. The two Hamilton Beach machines are easy to confuse. The Easy Flip’s listing names a dishwasher-safe drip tray; this one does not mention a tray at all. What it does say about cleaning is plain: “The nonstick waffle maker has grids that remove for easy cleaning by hand or in the dishwasher.” Either route is offered, with no preference given.

It is the only listing here that gives a waffle size and depth. The first bullet promises “7” Round” waffles and a depth it prints as “. 92” Deep”, which reads as 0.92 inches. Most listings on this page describe thickness in words like deep or thick; this one gives a number. The second bullet says you can make 1 or 2 waffles at a time, and the title and bullets call it a Belgian waffle maker with removable plates.

How many grids come out is not stated. A double flip with two chambers implies two pairs of grids, and the listing says the grids remove, but it does not give a count. If you are planning dishwasher space, assume several flat grids and check the manual. The coating is described only as nonstick, with no type or free-from claim, unlike the ceramic Easy Flip.

The controls are basic. Power and preheat indicator lights tell you when it is on and when it is hot enough for batter. No browning control or wattage is stated. The “‘D’ shaped handle is easy to hold, lock, and flip.” At 14.13 by 9.75 by 7.94 inches and 9.13 pounds, it is taller and heavier than the Easy Flip.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #26,075 overall and #62 in Waffle Irons. If you want two flipped waffles per cycle and a stated size, it is the machine here that gives both. If you want the counter protected, the Easy Flip names the tray that this one leaves out.

Pros

  • Two Belgian waffles at once
  • Only stated waffle size and depth: 7 in, 0.92 in
  • Grids wash by hand or in the dishwasher
  • Power and preheat lights
  • Locking D-shaped handle
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • No drip tray named, unlike the Easy Flip
  • Grid count not stated
  • No browning control stated
  • Coating type not stated
  • No wattage stated
  • 9.13 lb

Best for: A household that wants two flipped Belgian waffles per cycle and a listing that states their size, and does not mind wiping the counter afterwards.

6. FineMade Belgian Waffle Maker with Removable Plates, 3 in 1 Panini Grill Press — Best 3-in-1 Station

Stainless steel contact grill with a hinged lid and a set of removable waffle and grill plates

Waffle, sandwich and grill in one stainless box, with detachable plates that wipe clean or go in the dishwasher.

Key Specifications

Plates Detachable nonstick plates; waffle, sandwich, grill
Plate count Not stated
Dishwasher Wipe down, or dishwasher for a thorough clean, stated
Overflow catch Not stated
Release Not stated
Coating Nonstick; also called “cast iron” in one bullet
Power 1200W, stated
Housing Stainless steel exterior
Size and weight 13.8 x 10.8 x 4.1 in; 7.4 lb
Seller FineMade Warehouse
Best Sellers Rank #11,955 overall; #54 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

The FineMade is a contact grill that makes waffles. Its title stacks the uses: “Large Waffle Iron, 3 in 1 Panini Grill Press Breakfast Sandwich Maker, Electric Griddle, Grilled Cheese Maker, Breakfast Station.” The first bullet names three functions, waffle iron, sandwich maker and grill. On a machine like this, removable plates are not optional: you cannot swap a waffle grid for a grill plate without them. The listing does not say how many plates are in the box.

The cleaning line puts the cloth first. “The detachable non-stick cooking plates make cleanup a breeze… Simply wipe down the plates after use, or put them in the dishwasher for a thorough clean.” That order matters on a 3-in-1. Grill plates collect fat and charred bits that a waffle plate never sees, and the dishwasher is offered for the heavy jobs. No drip tray or fat channel is named, which is a larger gap on a machine sold for grilled meats than on a waffle-only iron.

The materials claim contradicts itself. The fourth bullet says “detachable non-stick cooking plates.” The third calls the machine “this cast iron waffle maker.” Cast iron and nonstick-coated plates are different things, and nothing else in the listing supports cast iron. We report both and treat the plates as nonstick, as the cleaning bullet describes them. Our cast iron waffle maker guide covers machines that really are cast iron.

The specs are partial. 1200W is stated, with a claim of quick and even heating. The stainless steel exterior measures 13.8 by 10.8 by 4.1 inches and the listing gives 7.4 pounds. There is no browning control, no plate size, no waffle count beyond “multiple waffles at once”, and no warranty. The model is listed as WSGM001.

What to weigh. It is sold by FineMade Warehouse, not Amazon.com, and ranks #11,955 overall and #54 in Waffle Irons. It suits a kitchen that wants one appliance for waffles, paninis and grilled food. For a closer look at swap-plate machines, see our 3-in-1 waffle maker guide; for waffles alone, the Hamilton Beach and KRUPS listings say more about the waffle.

Pros

  • Waffle, sandwich and grill in one
  • Detachable plates; wipe or dishwasher
  • 1200W, stated
  • Stainless steel exterior
  • Flat 4.1 in height stores easily
  • #54 in Waffle Irons

Cons

  • Calls itself cast iron; plates are nonstick
  • Plate count not stated
  • No drip tray or fat channel named
  • No browning control stated
  • No warranty stated
  • Third-party seller

Best for: A kitchen that wants one stainless appliance for waffles, paninis and grilled food, and will mostly wipe the plates and save the dishwasher for heavy jobs.

Size and weight 13.5 x 6.0 x 6.0 in; 7.94 lb
Seller Meitian Store
Best Sellers Rank #35,557 overall; #81 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

This is the only listing here that gives the size of its plates. “Includes three interchangeable plates—Waffle, Sandwich, and Grill—each measuring 10.8 x 5.5 inches.” By our arithmetic, that is about 59 square inches per plate. No other listing on the page gives a plate dimension, so this is also the only one where you can check whether a plate will lie flat in your dishwasher rack before you buy.

The cleaning claim is soft cloth or dishwasher. “The removable nonstick plates ensure easy food release and cleanup. This waffle iron with removable plates allows you to wipe with a soft cloth or place plates directly in the dishwasher.” The soft cloth is a sensible instruction for nonstick and the closest any listing here comes to warning against abrasives. As with the FineMade, there is no drip tray or fat channel named for the grill plate.

It tells you to ignore its own indicator. The last bullet is the frankest on the page: “we bake our waffles by time, not by the indicator light. The green light going off does NOT mean your waffle is ready.” The listing suggests about 8 minutes on level 3 or about 5 minutes on level 5, and a further 1–2 minutes if the waffle is not crisp enough. Five levels are split between warming, 1–2, and toasting or searing, 3–5. Use a timer with this one.

The brand is not the one in the copy. The brand field reads Metine and the seller is Meitian Store. The second bullet calls it “this all clad waffle maker”; it is not an All-Clad product, and the phrase reads as a search term. The fifth bullet says it is “Crafted from durable, BPA-free materials and tested for safety and quality”, without naming a test or standard. 1200W is stated, it stands upright for storage, and the listing gives 13.5 by 6.0 by 6.0 inches and 7.94 pounds.

What to weigh. It ranks #35,557 overall and #81 in Waffle Irons and is sold by a third party. It is the 3-in-1 with the most specific listing: plate count, plate size, a timing guide and an honest warning about the light. Against the FineMade, it gives more numbers and an upright storage claim, and drops the stainless exterior.

Pros

  • Only stated plate size: 10.8 x 5.5 in
  • Three named plates: waffle, sandwich, grill
  • Soft-cloth or dishwasher cleaning stated
  • 1200W and 5 levels stated
  • Timing guide given
  • Stands upright for storage

Cons

  • Indicator light is not a done signal, per the listing
  • Uses “all clad” as a search phrase
  • No drip tray or fat channel named
  • Coating type not stated
  • Safety testing claimed without a standard
  • Third-party seller

Best for: A cook who wants a 3-in-1 with a known plate size and will cook by timer rather than by the light.

8. DASH Multimaker with 7 Removable Plates: Waffle Iron & Griddle + 3 Themed Plates — Most Plates

Small red mini waffle maker beside a storage case of round plates in holiday shapes

The most plates on the page, holiday shapes and a storage case, with a count that does not agree with itself.

Key Specifications

Plates 7 in title; “Six 4” removable plates” in first bullet
Plate types 2 waffle, 2 griddle, Santa, pumpkin, snowman (bullet 5)
Plate size 4 in, stated
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe, stated
Overflow catch Not stated
Release Not stated; “easy to swap”
Coating PTFE nonstick, stated
Storage Plate storage case included
Size 6.9 x 4.0 x 4.0 in; weight not stated
Seller Pink Green Yellow
Best Sellers Rank #21,593 overall; #52 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

This is the largest plate kit on the page, if you trust the title. The title says “7 Removable Plates: Waffle Iron & Griddle + 3 Themed Plates.” The fifth bullet itemises them: “2 waffle, 2 griddle, 1 Santa, 1 pumpkin, and 1 snowman plate.” That adds to seven. But the first bullet says “This DASH Multimaker with Six 4” removable plates”, and the fifth bullet then adds “Plus 2 additional griddle plates”, which could be a restatement or two more. We report the title’s seven, the bullet’s six, and the ambiguity.

The cleaning claim is repeated, not qualified. “Removable plates are dishwasher safe and easy to swap… Plates are dishwasher safe for convenient cleaning.” It is the same brand as the 5-plate Dash MultiMaker, but this listing drops that machine’s advice to hand wash for the sake of the coating. It is also the only listing here that names the coating as PTFE: “a superior quality PTFE nonstick surface.” PTFE coatings are generally best kept out of high-heat dishwasher cycles, whatever the label says.

The storage case solves the kit problem. Seven small plates are easy to lose in a drawer. The listing includes “a plate storage case for easy organization and storage.” The GreenPan stores its spare plates in its base; this is the only other listing that gives spare plates a home. The release mechanism is not named, only that the plates are easy to swap.

The seller and the specs need checking. It is sold by Pink Green Yellow, a third party, not Amazon.com, and the listing gives no weight. The size is 6.9 by 4.0 by 4.0 inches, a 4-inch mini like the 5-plate Dash. The title says “Mini Waffle for Halloween and Christmas Holidays”, which is the selling point: the three themed plates.

What to weigh. It ranks #21,593 overall and #52 in Waffle Irons, well behind the 5-plate Dash at #7. If the holiday shapes and the case are the point, this is the kit. If not, the 5-plate Dash is sold by Amazon.com, names its Release Tabs and gives honest dishwasher advice. Our griddle waffle maker roundup compares machines sold on their swap plates.

Pros

  • Most plates here, 7 in the title
  • Santa, pumpkin and snowman shapes
  • Plate storage case included
  • Dishwasher safe, stated
  • Coating named: PTFE nonstick
  • Two griddle plates for eggs and pancakes

Cons

  • Plate count conflicts: 7 vs six
  • Third-party seller
  • Weight not stated
  • No overflow catch stated
  • Release mechanism not stated
  • Drops the hand-wash advice of the 5-plate Dash

Best for: A family that wants seasonal shapes for holiday breakfasts and a case to keep the plates together, and will confirm the plate count with the seller.

9. Baker’s Friend 4 in 1 Mini Waffle Maker with Removable Plates, Red — Best Shapes Kit

Small red mini waffle maker with round plates for waffles, mini pancakes and doughnuts

Waffle, heart, pancake and donut plates in one mini, with the third-best rank on the page.

Key Specifications

Plates Removable; 4-in-1 set
Plate types Mini waffle, heart waffle, mini pancake, donut (title)
Plate count Not stated; item count 5
Dishwasher Suitable for cleaning in a dishwasher, stated
Overflow catch Not stated
Release “Easily removed”; mechanism not stated
Coating Two nonstick surfaces; type not stated
Weight 2.2 lb in spec table; “over 1lb” in bullets
Size as listed 13.5 x 10.5 x 3.98 in
Seller Baker’s Friend USA
Best Sellers Rank #5,091 overall; #21 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

The Baker’s Friend is a shapes kit first. Its title lists a “Set Includes Mini Pancake, Donut, Heart Shape Waffle Makers” alongside the mini waffle, and the bullets push further: paninis, hash browns, biscuit pizzas, eggs, cookies, grilled cheese, arepas and mini doughnuts. The removable plates are what make the 4-in-1 work. The listing does not say how many plates are in the box; the spec table gives an item count of 5, which may mean four plate sets and a base, but the listing does not say so.

The dishwasher claim is clear and brief. “The cooking plates can be easily removed and are suitable for cleaning in a dishwasher.” No hand-wash advice, no overflow tray, no release mechanism named. On a donut plate, with its ring-shaped wells, a dishwasher is a real help: those channels are hard to reach with a cloth. On a mini, any overfill reaches the base quickly, so wipe the housing after each batch.

The weight figures disagree. The spec table gives 2.2 pounds. The bullet says “weighing over 1lb.” Both can be true, but they are not the same claim, and we report both. The listed dimensions, 13.5 by 10.5 by 3.98 inches, are much larger than the Dash minis’ 6.9 by 5.0 inches and may describe the boxed set rather than the maker; the listing does not say. The part number and model number also differ, BF-MMM01 and BF-PM01G.

Heat-up is described loosely. “Just connect it to a power source and start using it; it reaches the desired temperature within just a few minutes.” No wattage, browning control or indicator light is stated. It is pitched as a gift and for a first apartment, dorm or RV, and a recipe is included.

What to weigh. It is sold by Baker’s Friend USA and ranks #5,091 overall, third best on the page, and #21 in Waffle Irons. It is the kit to choose for donut and mini pancake plates. Against the 5-plate Dash, it trades a named release, an Amazon.com seller and a stated cook time for more shapes.

Pros

  • Third-best rank, #5,091 overall
  • Donut and mini pancake plates
  • Heart and classic mini waffle plates
  • Dishwasher suitable, stated
  • Recipe included
  • Light enough for a dorm or RV

Cons

  • Plate count not stated
  • Weight figures differ: 2.2 lb vs over 1 lb
  • No wattage or indicator stated
  • No overflow catch stated
  • Listed size may be the box
  • Third-party seller

Best for: A household that wants donut, pancake and heart shapes from one mini and values a dishwasher for the fiddly plates.

10. KRUPS 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Maker, Stainless Steel, 5 Browning Levels, Removable Plates, 1200W — Most Popular Full-Size

Stainless steel and black square Belgian waffle maker with four deep square waffle sections

The best-ranked full-size machine here, and the only listing that never mentions a dishwasher.

Key Specifications

Plates Removable nonstick plates
Dishwasher Not stated
Overflow catch Not stated
Release Not stated
Coating Nonstick; type not stated
Capacity 4 square Belgian waffles
Power 1200W, stated
Browning 5 levels, stated
Alerts Red and green lights; audible ready beep
Features Steam-release system; cord wrap; handle lock
Size and weight 18.9 x 9.84 x 9.84 in; 9.1 lb
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #4,915 overall; #12 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

The KRUPS is the one listing on this page that says nothing about a dishwasher. Its cleaning bullet reads “Easy Cleaning: Waffle iron removable plates with nonstick coating for effortless food release; ensure quick and convenient cleanup, spend less time scrubbing.” Removable, yes. Nonstick, yes. Dishwasher, not a word. Nine other listings here make the claim; this one does not, and it is the second-best seller on the page.

Silence is not a prohibition, but it is information. The listing does not say hand-wash only, either. The safe reading is that the plates are removable for sink washing, and that dishwasher use is not something the listing commits to. If the dishwasher is the reason you want removable plates, confirm with the manual or the brand before you buy. If you are happy to wash plates by hand, the omission costs you nothing.

As a waffle maker, it states more than most. Four square Belgian waffles at once, with “deep pockets”. Five browning levels. Red and green indicator lights plus an audible “Ready” beep. 1200W. And a “steam-release system” for a crisp outside, the only steam claim on the page. For family-size machines compared on capacity, see our 4-slice waffle maker roundup.

The storage details are practical. A cord wrap and a handle lock keep it closed and tidy in a cupboard, and the housing is stainless steel. The listing gives 18.9 by 9.84 by 9.84 inches and 9.1 pounds. No overflow tray or moat is named, and the release mechanism for the plates is not described. No warranty is stated.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #4,915 overall and #12 in Waffle Irons, the best rank among the full-size machines here. It is a strong four-square waffle maker with removable plates, a beep and a steam claim. It sits last in this guide only because this guide is about cleaning, and on the dishwasher question its listing is the only blank.

Pros

  • Best rank among full-size machines, #12 in Waffle Irons
  • Four square Belgian waffles at once
  • 5 browning levels and 1200W stated
  • Audible ready beep plus lights
  • Only steam-release claim on the page
  • Cord wrap and handle lock

Cons

  • Only listing silent on the dishwasher
  • No overflow catch stated
  • Release mechanism not stated
  • Coating type not stated
  • No warranty stated
  • Longest body here, 18.9 in

Best for: A family that wants four Belgian waffles with a beep and five shades, and is content to wash removable plates by hand.

Nine Dishwasher Claims, Worded Nine Ways

Nine of the ten listings say the plates can go in a dishwasher. That sounds like agreement, and in one sense it is. But read the sentences and they fall into three groups: plain claims, claims with a wipe-down offered first, and one claim that comes with advice not to use it. The tenth listing says nothing.

Machine Dishwasher claim as worded Hand cleaning mentioned Coating as stated
Hamilton Beach Easy Flip “Removable grids and drip tray are dishwasher safe” No Ceramic, PTFE and PFOA free
GreenPan Elite “Toss in the dishwasher for tough messes” No Ceramic, PFAS free
Dash MultiMaker, 5 plates “Dishwasher safe” Yes: “hand wash to keep the nonstick coating at its best” Nonstick, type not stated
All-Clad 4-Section “Dishwasher-safe plates”; also in title No Nonstick, type not stated
Hamilton Beach Double Flip “By hand or in the dishwasher” Yes, as an equal option Nonstick, type not stated
FineMade 3-in-1 “Or put them in the dishwasher for a thorough clean” Yes: wipe down first Nonstick; also called cast iron
Metine 3-in-1 “Or place plates directly in the dishwasher” Yes: soft cloth first Nonstick, type not stated
DASH Multimaker, 7 plates “Dishwasher safe”, twice No PTFE nonstick
Baker’s Friend 4-in-1 “Suitable for cleaning in a dishwasher” No Nonstick, type not stated
KRUPS 4-Slice Not stated Not stated Nonstick, type not stated

The count, exactly. Nine listings say the plates are dishwasher safe or can go in a dishwasher. One, the KRUPS, does not mention a dishwasher. None says hand-wash only. Four mention hand cleaning: the Dash 5-plate recommends it, the Hamilton Beach Double Flip offers it as an equal choice, and the FineMade and Metine offer a wipe-down before the dishwasher. Five state a dishwasher claim with no hand-cleaning option at all.

The most useful sentence is the Dash’s. “Removable Plates are dishwasher safe; hand wash to keep the nonstick coating at its best.” That separates two questions most listings run together: will the plate survive the dishwasher, and is the dishwasher good for it? Dishwasher detergent is alkaline and abrasive, and cycles run hot; that is hard on nonstick coatings in general, ceramic and PTFE alike. A plate can be dishwasher safe in the sense that it will not warp or fail, and still lose its release faster in the machine than in the sink. That is general knowledge, not a claim any listing here makes beyond the Dash.

Coating information is thin. Two listings name a ceramic coating and give free-from claims: Hamilton Beach’s Durathon, PTFE and PFOA free, and GreenPan’s Thermolon Volt, free of PFAS, PFOA, lead and cadmium. One, the 7-plate DASH, names PTFE. Seven say nonstick with no type. If the coating matters to you, our non-toxic waffle maker guide sets out what those labels cover.

What this means for buying. If you want removable plates so you can use the dishwasher, nine listings here will let you. If you want the plates to last, wash them by hand most of the time anyway, and keep the dishwasher for the stuck-on batches. The removable plate is the real advantage either way: a plate in a sink is far easier to clean than a plate bolted over an element.

A steel faucet over a clean sink beside a sprig in a vase
A soft sponge in the sink is gentler on nonstick than any dishwasher cycle.

One Drip Tray, One Moat, Eight Silences

Removable plates clean the plates. They do nothing for the batter that never stays on them. Overfill a waffle iron and the excess squeezes out of the seam, runs over the hinge and the housing, and pools on the counter or under the feet. The housing has the element and the wiring in it, so it cannot go in a sink. It has to be wiped where it stands.

Machine Overflow catch stated Release as stated Spare plate storage
Hamilton Beach Easy Flip Drip tray, dishwasher safe Not stated (let cool, then remove) Not applicable
GreenPan Elite Extra-large moat, all sides “Pop the plates out” In the base of the unit
Dash MultiMaker, 5 plates Not stated Release Tabs Not stated
All-Clad 4-Section Not stated Not stated Not applicable
Hamilton Beach Double Flip Not stated Not stated Not applicable
FineMade 3-in-1 Not stated Not stated Not stated
Metine 3-in-1 Not stated Not stated Not stated
DASH Multimaker, 7 plates Not stated Not stated (“easy to swap”) Storage case
Baker’s Friend 4-in-1 Not stated Not stated (“easily removed”) Not stated
KRUPS 4-Slice Not stated Not stated Not applicable

Two of ten address overflow at all. The Hamilton Beach Easy Flip names a drip tray and says it goes in the dishwasher. The GreenPan names a moat that frames the plates on all sides “To prevent batter from leaking.” The listings differ in a way that matters: a removable tray can go in the sink with the plates, while the GreenPan listing does not say whether its moat is removable. The other eight say nothing about overflow. That does not prove they have no channel or lip, but nothing in the listing lets you count on one.

One of ten names a release. The Dash 5-plate’s Release Tabs are the only named mechanism. The GreenPan describes the action, popping the plates out. The Baker’s Friend says easily removed and the 7-plate DASH says easy to swap. Six say removable or detachable and stop. A release you cannot see on the listing is worth checking in the manual or product photos, especially on a full-size machine where you will be lifting a plate that has just been near a heating element.

Only one listing tells you to wait. The Hamilton Beach Easy Flip says to let the machine cool before removing the grids and tray. As general guidance, that applies to every machine here: a waffle plate stays hot for some time after the light goes off, and a hot nonstick plate plunged into cold water can warp. Let the plates cool to warm before you lift them out.

How to handle overflow on the other eight. General practice, not listing claims: fill to just short of the edge of the pockets, close the lid gently, and put a sheet of baking parchment or a silicone mat under the machine to catch drips. Wipe the housing with a damp cloth once it is cool. The machines with the best odds are the ones with a stated tray or moat; for the rest, the parchment is your drip tray.

Overflow is the mess removable plates cannot reach; two listings in ten name a catch for it.

Removable Often Means Interchangeable

Six of the ten sell their plates as a set of different shapes or functions. The listings handle the counts with varying care.

Machine Plate count as stated Plate types as stated Conflict or gap
GreenPan Elite Two sets Belgian waffle, classic waffle None
Dash MultiMaker, 5 plates 5 Classic waffle, heart waffle, mini griddle Split by type not stated
DASH Multimaker, 7 plates 7 (title); six (bullet 1) 2 waffle, 2 griddle, Santa, pumpkin, snowman Counts conflict; “plus 2 additional griddle plates” unclear
Baker’s Friend 4-in-1 Not stated (item count 5) Mini waffle, heart, pancake, donut Count not given
Metine 3-in-1 3 Waffle, sandwich, grill; 10.8 x 5.5 in each None
FineMade 3-in-1 Not stated Waffle, sandwich, grill Count not given; cast iron vs nonstick

Interchangeable plates add cleaning, not just options. Every extra plate is one more thing to wash and store, and grill or sandwich plates collect fat that a waffle plate never sees. A 3-in-1 with a grill plate and no stated fat channel, like the FineMade and the Metine, will need more wiping than a waffle-only machine. On the other hand, a donut or shaped plate is far easier to clean out of the machine than in it.

Storage is the overlooked spec. Only two listings say where the spare plates live: the GreenPan, in its base, and the 7-plate DASH, in a storage case. Plates left loose in a drawer get scratched, and a scratched nonstick plate releases worse and is harder to clean. A kit without storage is worth pairing with a drawer divider or a padded pouch.

Read the count twice. The 7-plate DASH says seven in the title and six in its first bullet. The Baker’s Friend gives types but no count. The Dash 5-plate gives a count but no split. If a specific plate is the reason you are buying, confirm it is in the box before you pay.

Best Alternatives

If none of the ten fits, these are the directions to look, with what each gives up.

Alternative Why Consider It Better For Main Trade-Off
Fixed-plate waffle iron with a drip channel Wider choice and often a moulded overflow channel Buyers who mostly wipe and rarely wash plates Pockets must be cleaned in place
Rotary waffle maker Rotation spreads batter for even deep waffles Thick Belgian waffles Plates are usually fixed; see our rotary waffle maker guide
Cast iron stovetop iron No coating to protect; the whole iron goes in the sink Cooks who season pans Not dishwasher safe; needs drying and oil
Contact grill with waffle plates Removable plates plus a fat tray on many models Kitchens that grill as often as they make waffles Waffle plate is often an add-on

What the Step Up Buys

At the budget end, you get removable plates and a dishwasher claim. The Dash minis and the Baker’s Friend all state dishwasher-safe plates, and the 5-plate Dash names its release tabs. What you do not get is a full-size waffle, a browning control or anything to catch overflow.

In the middle, you get full-size waffles and, on one machine, a drip tray. The two Hamilton Beach flips, the KRUPS, the FineMade and the Metine make full-size waffles or sandwiches. Only the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip adds a stated drip tray, and only the KRUPS omits a dishwasher claim. Wattage, where stated, is 1200W.

At the premium end, you get power, capacity and plate management. The All-Clad states 1600W and six browning levels. The GreenPan states two plate sets, a moat, storage in the base, an LCD and the broadest free-from coating claim. Neither costs more in dishwasher terms: both state dishwasher-safe plates, as do the budget minis. The step up buys features around the plates, not better cleaning of them.

Kits run from two plate sets to seven plates; only two listings say where the spares live.

What to Check Before You Buy

Find the Word Dishwasher in the Listing

Removable does not mean dishwasher safe. Nine listings here use the word; the KRUPS does not. If the dishwasher is why you want removable plates, look for it in the title or bullets, not just “easy to clean”.

Read the Rest of the Cleaning Sentence

The Dash 5-plate says dishwasher safe and then recommends hand washing for the coating. The GreenPan suggests the dishwasher for tough messes. A dishwasher claim with a qualifier tells you how the brand expects the plates to be treated.

Look for a Drip Tray or Moat

Only the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip names a drip tray and only the GreenPan a moat. Without either, plan on parchment under the machine and a wipe of the housing after every batch.

Check How the Plates Release

Only the Dash 5-plate names its mechanism, Release Tabs. On the others, check photos or the manual for a button, latch or clip, and how easily it works with an oven glove on.

Measure the Plates Against Your Dishwasher

Only the Metine states a plate size, 10.8 by 5.5 inches. Full-size square plates can be awkward in a lower rack. If space is tight, a smaller or round plate fits more easily.

Count the Plates and Plan Storage

Kits run from two plate sets to seven plates. The 7-plate DASH contradicts its own count. Only the GreenPan and the 7-plate DASH say where spare plates go.

Know What the Coating Is

Two listings name ceramic, one names PTFE, seven say nonstick only. Either way, keep abrasive pads and metal tools off the plates; that is general guidance for any coated plate, and the Metine is the only listing that mentions a soft cloth.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming removable means dishwasher safe. The KRUPS, the second-best seller here, has removable plates and never mentions a dishwasher.
  • Reading dishwasher safe as dishwasher recommended. The Dash 5-plate says dishwasher safe and advises hand washing to protect the coating.
  • Expecting removable plates to clean the counter. Only 1 of 10 listings names a drip tray and 1 a moat; overflow lands on the housing.
  • Pulling plates out hot. Only the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip says let it cool first, but it applies to all ten.
  • Trusting a plate count in the title. The 7-plate DASH says six plates in its first bullet.
  • Using an abrasive pad on nonstick plates. Seven listings do not name their coating; a soft cloth is the safe default for all of them.
  • Buying a grill-plate kit for waffles alone. The FineMade and Metine grill plates collect fat, and neither listing names a fat channel.
  • Cooking by the light on the Metine. Its own listing says the light going off does not mean the waffle is ready; it suggests 5 to 8 minutes.

Who Should Buy Which

Buy the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip if cleaning is the reason you are shopping. Dishwasher-safe ceramic grids, the only stated drip tray, which also goes in the dishwasher, PTFE and PFOA free, and a one-year warranty. Accept one waffle per cycle.

Buy the GreenPan Elite if you want two waffle styles and somewhere to keep the spare plates. Belgian and classic plate sets, dishwasher safe, stored in the base, with a moat on all sides. Accept 13.7 pounds, the largest footprint and a premium position.

Buy the Dash MultiMaker 5-plate if you want cheap swappable minis and honest advice. The best rank here, Release Tabs, and a listing that says hand wash to protect the coating. Accept the mini size and no overflow catch.

Buy the All-Clad 4-Section if you want power and a dishwasher claim in the title. 1600W, six browning levels, four deep sections, stores upright. Accept 13.27 pounds and no stated overflow catch.

Buy the Hamilton Beach Double Flip if you want two flipped waffles at once with a known size. 7-inch rounds, 0.92 inches deep, grids that wash by hand or in the dishwasher. Accept no drip tray, unlike its sibling.

Buy the FineMade 3-in-1 if you want waffles, paninis and grilling from one stainless machine. Detachable plates, wipe or dishwasher, 1200W. Accept a cast iron claim the cleaning bullet contradicts and no fat channel named.

Buy the Metine 3-in-1 if you want a known plate size and a timing guide. Three plates at 10.8 by 5.5 inches, soft cloth or dishwasher, five levels. Accept that you cook by timer, not by the light.

Buy the DASH Multimaker 7-plate for holiday shapes and a storage case. Santa, pumpkin and snowman plates, PTFE nonstick, dishwasher safe. Accept a plate count that conflicts and a third-party seller.

Buy the Baker’s Friend 4-in-1 for donut and mini pancake plates. Third-best rank, dishwasher-suitable plates, a recipe included. Accept no stated plate count or wattage.

Buy the KRUPS 4-Slice if you want a popular four-square Belgian maker and will hand wash. Five shades, a ready beep, a steam-release system, 1200W. Accept that the listing never mentions a dishwasher.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best waffle maker with removable plates?

For most buyers, the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip Belgian Waffle Maker. Its listing states more about cleaning than any other here: removable Durathon ceramic grids that are PTFE and PFOA free, a drip tray to catch overflow, and both the grids and the tray dishwasher safe. It is also the only listing that tells you to let the machine cool before you remove them. It is sold by Amazon.com, ranks #20 in Waffle Irons, and states a one-year warranty. The trade-off is that it makes one Belgian waffle per cycle. If you need four at once and want two plate styles, the GreenPan Elite states dishwasher-safe plates, a moat around them, and storage for the spare set in its base. On a budget, the Dash MultiMaker with 5 plates holds the best rank on the page and is the only listing that names how its plates release.

What is the best easy to clean waffle maker?

Easy to clean comes down to three things a listing can tell you: whether the plates come out, whether they can go in a dishwasher, and whether anything catches the batter that escapes. All ten machines here have removable plates. Nine say the plates are dishwasher safe. Only one, the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip, names a drip tray, and it says the tray is dishwasher safe as well, which makes it the easiest machine here to clean on paper. The GreenPan Elite names an extra-large moat around the plates, which should keep batter off the counter, though the listing does not say how the moat itself is cleaned. On a fixed-plate iron, by comparison, you clean every pocket in place. Whatever you buy, filling the pockets just short of the edge and putting parchment under the machine prevents most of the mess removable plates cannot reach.

What is the best dishwasher safe waffle maker?

Nine of the ten removable-plate machines here say their plates are dishwasher safe, so the choice comes down to what else is in the dishwasher claim. The Hamilton Beach Easy Flip is the strongest: grids and drip tray are both dishwasher safe, and the grids are ceramic, PTFE and PFOA free. The All-Clad puts Dishwasher Safe in its title. The GreenPan says to use the dishwasher for tough messes, and the Hamilton Beach Double Flip offers hand or dishwasher equally. The Dash MultiMaker 5-plate says dishwasher safe but recommends hand washing to keep the coating at its best. The KRUPS 4-Slice is the only listing that never mentions a dishwasher. Note that the dishwasher claim covers the plates and, on the Easy Flip, the tray; no waffle maker housing can go in a dishwasher, because it contains the heating element.

Can you put waffle maker plates in the dishwasher?

Only if the listing or manual says so, and even then it may not be the best choice. Nine of the ten listings here say the plates can go in a dishwasher; the KRUPS does not say either way. The Dash MultiMaker 5-plate is unusually candid: its plates are dishwasher safe, but it recommends hand washing to keep the nonstick coating at its best. That reflects general knowledge about coatings. Dishwasher detergent is alkaline and mildly abrasive and cycles run hot, which wears nonstick faster than a sink and a soft sponge. So a plate can be dishwasher safe, meaning it will not be damaged in one cycle, while still lasting longer if you hand wash it most of the time. A sensible routine is hand washing for everyday batches and the dishwasher for stuck-on messes, as the GreenPan listing suggests. Never put the base of any waffle maker in water.

Are removable plates on a waffle maker worth it?

For most people, yes, because they move the hardest cleaning job to the sink. A fixed-plate iron has to be cleaned in place, with a damp cloth or soft brush worked into every pocket while you keep water away from the element. Deep Belgian pockets, like those the KRUPS and All-Clad describe, make that slow. With removable plates, you can soak and wash the plates properly, and on nine of the ten machines here, put them in a dishwasher. Removable plates also make swappable kits possible, such as the GreenPan’s Belgian and classic sets or the 3-in-1 machines that swap a waffle plate for sandwich and grill plates. The limits are that the housing still has to be wiped where it stands, there are more parts to store, and a release mechanism is one more thing that can wear. Only one listing here names its release, the Dash MultiMaker’s Release Tabs.

How do you clean a waffle maker with removable plates?

Follow the manual first; what follows is general guidance. Unplug the machine and let it cool until the plates are warm, not hot. The Hamilton Beach Easy Flip is the only listing here that states this step, but it applies to all ten: a hot nonstick plate in cold water can warp. Release the plates using whatever mechanism the machine has; only the Dash MultiMaker 5-plate names one, its Release Tabs. Wash the plates in warm soapy water with a soft sponge or cloth, which the Metine listing names, or in the dishwasher if the listing allows it. Avoid abrasive pads and metal tools on any coated plate. Wipe the housing, hinge and any drip tray or moat with a damp cloth, and never put the base in water. Dry everything fully before reassembling, and store spare plates where they will not be scratched.

Which waffle makers here have a drip tray?

Only one listing on this page names a drip tray: the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip Belgian Waffle Maker. Its third bullet says the removable grids and drip tray are dishwasher safe and should be removed once the machine has cooled. The GreenPan Elite names something similar but different, an extra-large moat that frames the plates on all sides to stop batter leaking; the listing does not say whether the moat lifts out. The other eight listings, including the Hamilton Beach Double Flip from the same brand, say nothing about a drip tray, moat or overflow channel. That does not prove they have none, but you cannot count on one from the listing. If your machine has no tray, a sheet of baking parchment or a silicone mat under it does the same job, and filling the pockets just short of the edge prevents most overflow in the first place.

Do interchangeable waffle maker plates make cleaning harder?

They add parts, but they usually make each part easier to clean. A plate you can take to the sink is easier to clean than one fixed over an element, and that is especially true of shaped plates, such as the Baker’s Friend donut plate or the 7-plate DASH holiday shapes, which have narrow channels a cloth cannot reach in place. The catch is volume and type. Six machines here sell plate kits, from the GreenPan’s two waffle sets to the 7-plate DASH, and each extra plate is another item to wash and store. Grill and sandwich plates, on the FineMade and the Metine, collect fat and charred bits that waffle plates do not, and neither listing names a fat channel. Storage matters too: only the GreenPan, in its base, and the 7-plate DASH, in a case, say where the spare plates go.

Final Verdict

Best OverallHamilton Beach Easy Flip Belgian Waffle Maker

The only drip tray here, dishwasher safe with the ceramic grids, PTFE and PFOA free, sold by Amazon.com.

Best PremiumGreenPan Elite 4-Square Waffle Maker

Two dishwasher-safe plate sets stored in the base, a moat on all sides, and the broadest free-from coating claim.

Best BudgetDash MultiMaker Mini, 5 Removable Plates

Best rank on the page, the only named release mechanism, and honest advice to hand wash the plates.

All ten waffle makers on this page have removable plates, and nine say the plates can go in a dishwasher. On the question most buyers ask first, the listings nearly agree. The exception is the KRUPS 4-Slice, the second-best seller here, which says removable and nonstick and never mentions a dishwasher.

Dishwasher safe is not the same as dishwasher recommended. The Dash MultiMaker 5-plate says its plates are dishwasher safe and, in the same sentence, advises hand washing to keep the coating at its best. No listing here says hand-wash only, and four mention hand cleaning. The sensible reading is that the plates will survive the machine and last longer out of it.

The mess removable plates cannot reach is the overflow. Only one listing names a drip tray, the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip, and only one a moat, the GreenPan Elite. Only one names how the plates release, the Dash’s Release Tabs, and only one tells you to let the machine cool before you remove them. Eight leave the batter that escapes the plates to you and a damp cloth.

If you buy one waffle maker from this page, make it the Hamilton Beach Easy Flip: dishwasher-safe ceramic grids without PTFE, the only stated drip tray, which also goes in the dishwasher, a one-year warranty and an Amazon.com seller. If you want four squares, two plate styles and a moat, the GreenPan Elite is the premium choice; if budget comes first, the 5-plate Dash MultiMaker is the best seller here and the most honest about its dishwasher claim.
