A Gas Flame Comes First, Then the Best Cast Iron Waffle Maker

A cast iron waffle maker has no plug, no thermostat and no light that tells you it is ready. It is two hinged plates of metal on handles, and everything it does depends on the heat underneath it. So the first question about any iron on this page is not how big its waffles are or how it is seasoned. It is what the listing says you can put it on.

Read the ten listings side by side and one heat source dominates. Nine of the ten name a gas stove. Lehmans puts it in a bullet heading: “Best for Gas, Works on Electric”. DVK says “perfect for gas stovetops, camping stoves, and open fires”. The tenth, the ROME Chuckwagon, names a barbecue grill, a campfire and a camping stove, and no kitchen hob at all.

After gas, the list thins quickly. Seven name a campfire or an open flame. Five name a grill. Four name an electric hob. Three, the Professional 8-inch, the UKENEM low-base iron and the Aurionix “American Waffle Maker”, name induction. One listing, Lehmans, goes the other way and says plainly: “Not compatible with induction or smooth glass cooktops.”

Then there is the glass-top hob, the one most new kitchens have. Exactly one listing here names a ceramic stovetop: the Nordic Ware 15040. And the Nordic Ware is not cast iron. Its own title says “Cast Aluminum”, it carries a non-stick coating, and it weighs 3.4 pounds. Not one of the nine true cast iron listings says it suits a smooth glass or ceramic top, and the best-ranked of them says it does not.

That is the finding this guide is built on. A cast iron waffle iron is, by its listings, a gas-and-fire tool. If you cook on gas, nine of these ten are written for you. If you cook over a campfire, seven are. If you cook on induction, three make the claim in words. If you cook on glass, the listings leave you on your own, and the safe course is to follow your stove maker’s guidance about heavy cast iron before you buy.

So this guide sorts the ten by the heat sources each listing names, then sets out the four things that separate irons that share a burner: whether the hinge comes apart, whether the iron arrives seasoned, how wide the waffle is, and what the handles are made of. Waffle sizes run from 6 to 8 inches. Five listings say pre-seasoned and one says unseasoned. Three say the two halves come apart. Two give wooden handles, one gives cast iron handles, and seven do not say.

The secondary search here, the best non electric waffle maker, lands on the same ten. Every iron on this page is non-electric; the question is only which flame it was written for. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup; popularity below is Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank only.

All ten were captured on 5 October 2026. Their overall Best Sellers Ranks run from #29,137 to #215,467, and the best-ranked iron on the page, the Lehmans, is also the one that rules out glass and induction in writing.

Best Sellers Ranks and specifications are taken from each manufacturer’s Amazon listing as displayed on 5 October 2026 through a United States connection, and may change. Heat sources are recorded only where the listing names them in words; “not named” is not the same as “will not work”, but it is not a promise either. Lehmans is the only listing that rules a hob out. The Nordic Ware is cast aluminium with a non-stick coating, not cast iron, and is included because it is sold alongside these irons as a stovetop waffle maker. The UKENEM’s spec table gives 1 x 1 x 1 inches and 1 pound, which cannot describe a cast iron waffle iron, so we do not print them. Ranks are as returned on 5 October 2026; overall ranks are in the product sections.

How We Chose These Ten

We researched current listings, compared manufacturer specifications and documentation, and read each listing’s claims about heat sources, hinge, seasoning, size and handles line by line. We did not carry out hands-on testing, and nothing below is presented as measured performance data. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup. We used Amazon Best Sellers Rank, buy-box stock and listing specifications instead, and nothing on this page describes or implies how owners have scored these irons.

  • Non-electric stovetop and campfire irons only — every product here is a hinged waffle iron that takes its heat from a burner, a grill or a fire. Electric waffle makers were not in the running.
  • One non-iron included, and labelled — the Nordic Ware 15040 is cast aluminium, as its own title says. It is sold in the same category as a stovetop waffle iron and is the only listing that names a ceramic hob, so it stays on the page as the comparison, never as a cast iron pick.
  • Heat sources recorded exactly as named — gas, electric, ceramic or glass, induction, grill, campfire or open flame, and camping stove are logged only where the listing names them. A hob the listing does not mention is marked not named, even where cast iron would usually cope.
  • Hinge, seasoning, size and handles from the listing — a detachable hinge counts only where the listing says the halves come apart. Pre-seasoning counts only where the word is used. Waffle size is the figure the listing gives, and where it gives a head size and a waffle size, we report both.
  • Implausible fields left out — where a spec table gives a weight or outline that cannot describe the product, we say so and do not print it. Where a listing gives two figures for one thing, we report both.
  • Popularity from Best Sellers Rank only — ranks are quoted exactly as returned on 5 October 2026, overall and in Waffle Irons, where Amazon files all ten.
  • Verified stock and seller — each product was the buy-box offer and in stock on amazon.com on 5 October 2026. The Nordic Ware was flagged as scarce stock at capture.

The Ten Stovetop Waffle Irons in Detail

1. Lehmans Cast Iron Waffle Maker, Two Piece Hinged, 7 Inch Round, Non-Drip Double Rim — Best Overall

Round black cast iron waffle iron with two hinged halves and a short straight handle on each half

The best-ranked iron on the page, and the only listing that tells you which hobs to keep it off.

Best Sellers Rank #29,137 overall; #70 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

This is the clearest listing on the page about where the iron belongs. One bullet is headed “Best for Gas, Works on Electric”, and it goes on: “Performs best over gas or open flame; also usable on electric stovetops. Not compatible with induction or smooth glass cooktops.” Nine listings here tell you where their iron can go. This is the only one that also tells you where it cannot, and it rules out the two hob types most likely to be in a newer kitchen. Read that as honesty rather than weakness. A buyer with a glass top knows from this listing alone not to order it.

The title names a grill as well as a stove. “Non-Electric Waffle Iron for Stovetop or Grill Makes 7 inch Round Waffles”. With open flame in the bullets, that puts it on a gas hob, an electric coil, a grill grate and, by the listing’s words, an open flame. Grill and open-flame cooking belongs outdoors only, never in a tent, garage or any enclosed space, because burning fuel makes carbon monoxide.

The double rim is the design detail it sells hardest. The first bullet says the iron “features a unique double rim that virtually eliminates dripping” and that “no other iron waffle maker offers this flawless edge”. That second claim does not survive this page: the UKENEM’s title also says “Two Piece Hinged Non-Drip Double Rim for Stove Top or Grill”, in words very close to Lehmans’ own. Whatever the rim does, it is the feature a batter-filled iron needs most, because overflow on a gas hob burns onto the burner cap.

The halves come apart. “Dual-piece setup lets each half detach easily for cleaning.” Only three listings here say their halves separate, and Lehmans is one. A detachable hinge lets you scrub each plate flat, re-season each half in the oven, and heat the halves separately if you want to. The care instructions are the most detailed on the page: pre-seasoned with soybean oil, but the seller says “we strongly recommend re-seasoning at home”, by baking the iron upside down at 400–500°F for an hour, then hand washing with warm water and a little soap and oiling thinly after every use.

It is the heaviest stated build after the Aurionix. The listing gives about 8 pounds, a body of about 13-1/4 by 8 by 1-3/8 inches and a 4-1/2 inch handle. That mass is what cast iron is for: it stores heat, so the plates do not cool sharply when cold batter goes in. It also means a short handle on a heavy, hot iron, and the listing does not say what the handles are made of. Use oven gloves every time you flip it.

What to weigh. It ranks #29,137 overall and #70 in Waffle Irons, the best on the page by a clear margin, and is sold by Lehman’s Home and Garden. No warranty is stated. If you cook on gas or an electric coil, it combines the best rank, a detachable hinge, a pre-seasoned start and a 7-inch round. If you cook on glass or induction, the seller has already told you to buy something else.

Pros

  • Best rank here, #70 in Waffle Irons
  • Gas, open flame, electric and grill named
  • Halves detach for cleaning and seasoning
  • Pre-seasoned with soybean oil
  • Double rim aimed at drips
  • Most detailed care instructions on the page

Cons

  • Not for induction or smooth glass, stated
  • About 8 lb with a 4-1/2 in handle
  • Handle material not stated
  • Seller recommends re-seasoning before relying on it
  • No warranty stated
  • Hand wash only

Best for: A gas or electric-coil kitchen, or a grill outdoors, where a buyer wants the best-ranked iron with halves that come apart.

2. DVK 8 Inch Cast Iron Waffle Maker, Non-Electric, Pre-Seasoned — Best 8-Inch for Gas

Round black cast iron waffle iron with a deep grid pattern and two long removable handles

An 8-inch, pre-seasoned iron written for gas and open fire, with handles that come off for packing.

Key Specifications

Material Cast iron
Heat sources named Gas stovetops, camping stoves, open fires
Electric, glass, induction Not named
Size 8 in (whether head or waffle not stated)
Hinge Hinged; handles detachable
Seasoning Pre-seasoned
Outline 13 x 8 x 1 in
Listed weight Not stated
Handle material Not stated
Seller COFELER
Best Sellers Rank #41,726 overall; #95 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

This is a gas-and-fire iron by its own description. The title says “Non-Electric Manual Waffle Iron for Gas Stovetops and Open Fire”, and the bullets repeat it: “perfect for gas stovetops, camping stoves, and open fires”, for “outdoor picnics, RV trips, and backyard breakfast sessions where electricity is unavailable”. It does not mention an electric hob, a glass top or induction anywhere. That silence puts it with the majority on this page: written for a flame.

Eight inches is the headline, but of what? The title says “8 Inch” and the first bullet says “This 8-inch waffle maker”. The listing never says whether 8 inches is the waffle or the cooking head, and on irons like the HAWOK and the ROME those two figures differ by a quarter inch or more. The 13 by 8 inch outline is consistent with an 8-inch head. If waffle size matters to you, assume a little under 8 inches until the seller says otherwise. Even so, on the page it is one of only two irons with an 8-inch figure, with the Professional 8-inch.

The hinge stays together; the handles come off. “Featuring a secure hinged connection, this waffle maker allows for easy flipping and safe operation over a stove. Its slim profile and detachable handles make it easy to store.” That is a different kind of detachable from the Lehmans, which splits at the hinge. Removable handles help a camper or RV owner pack the iron flat; they do not let you lay each plate flat for scrubbing. The listing does not say what the handles are made of, so plan on gloves.

It arrives seasoned. “The pre-seasoned cast iron surface offers a chemical-free cooking experience.” It is one of five listings here that use the word, and it adds that the surface “develops a natural release property” as you follow its seasoning steps. Care is a quick rinse and oil. Like every bare cast iron iron on this page, expect the first few batches to need a little more fat on the plates than later ones.

What to weigh. It ranks #41,726 overall and #95 in Waffle Irons, second on the page, and is sold by COFELER. No weight and no warranty are stated. For a gas hob indoors or a camp stove and open fire outdoors, it offers the largest round figure on the page with pre-seasoning and packable handles. Open-fire and camp-stove use belongs outdoors only, never in a tent or enclosed space, because of carbon monoxide.

Pros

  • 8-inch figure, joint largest here
  • Gas, camping stove and open fire named
  • Pre-seasoned
  • Detachable handles pack flat
  • Second-best rank on the page
  • Simple rinse-and-oil care

Cons

  • Electric, glass and induction not named
  • Unclear whether 8 in is head or waffle
  • Hinge does not separate
  • No listed weight
  • Handle material not stated
  • No warranty stated

Best for: A gas-hob kitchen or an RV and camp kit where an 8-inch, pre-seasoned iron with removable handles fits the bag.

3. NordicWare 15040 Cast Aluminum Stovetop Belgium Waffle Iron — Best for Ceramic Hobs (Not Iron)

Slim black stovetop waffle iron with a square grid and a single long black handle

The only listing that names a ceramic hob, and the only iron on the page that is not iron.

Key Specifications

Material Cast aluminium with non-stick coating
Heat sources named Gas, electric and ceramic stovetops
Induction Not named
Cooking surface 7.1 x 7.1 in
Hinge Interlocking hinges separate
Seasoning Not applicable; non-stick coated
Listed weight 3.4 lb
Warranty 10 years
Made in USA, with an imported handle
Seller Amazon.com (stock scarce at capture)
Best Sellers Rank #53,819 overall; #115 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

Start with the material, because the listing does. The title is “NordicWare 15040 Cast Aluminum Stovetop Belgium Waffle Iron”, and a bullet repeats “Made of cast aluminum for even heating”. This is not a cast iron waffle maker. It turns up next to them because it does the same job, a hinged iron heated on a hob, and buyers searching for one meet the other. It is on this page as the comparison, and it does not take a cast iron award.

It is the only listing that names a ceramic hob. “Non-electric waffler for use on gas, electric and ceramic stovetops.” None of the nine cast iron listings says that; Lehmans says the opposite about its own iron. If you cook on a smooth glass-ceramic top and want a non-electric waffle iron that the maker says suits it, this is the one listing on the page that does. At 3.4 pounds it is also far lighter to lift on and off glass than the 8-pound Lehmans. Induction is not named, and aluminium is not magnetic, so a plain aluminium iron will not heat on an induction hob.

Aluminium changes the trade. It heats faster than cast iron and stores less heat, so the plates respond quickly to the burner and cool more when batter goes in. Lehmans makes the point from the other side: “Far outlasts aluminum.” The Nordic Ware’s answer is a 10 year warranty, one of only two on the page, and a “premium non-stick coating”, which means no seasoning and “Fully submersible for easy cleaning”. A coating also means no metal utensils and no fierce empty preheating; our non-toxic waffle maker guide covers what to ask about coatings.

The hinge separates, and the shape is square. “Interlocking hinges separate for quick preheating, slim profile takes up less space than an electric waffle maker.” The cooking surface is 7.1 by 7.1 inches, a Belgian-style grid rather than a round. The spec table’s outline, about 6.1 by 3.3 inches, cannot hold a 7.1-inch surface, so we do not print it. The listing says “Made in USA with an imported handle” and does not say what the handle is made of.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com, ranks #53,819 overall and #115 in Waffle Irons, third on the page, and was flagged as scarce stock at capture. If you searched for the best cast iron waffle maker because you want a non-electric iron for a ceramic hob, this is the honest answer the listings give: the one maker that names your hob is not selling cast iron.

Pros

  • Only listing to name a ceramic stovetop
  • Gas and electric also named
  • Light at 3.4 lb
  • Hinges separate
  • 10 year warranty
  • Non-stick coating, fully submersible

Cons

  • Cast aluminium, not cast iron
  • Not for induction
  • Stores less heat than cast iron
  • Coating rules out metal utensils
  • Stock scarce at capture
  • Handle material not stated

Best for: A glass-ceramic hob owner who wants a non-electric waffle iron the maker says suits it, and accepts aluminium and a coating.

4. 7 Inch Cast Iron Waffle Maker for Gas Stove or Camping Grill (GAQUECY) — Best Grill-Ready 7-Inch

Round cast iron waffle iron with two hinged halves and two long straight metal handles

A 7-inch round for gas, campfire and grill, and one of two listings that tells you to wear gloves.

Key Specifications

Material Cast iron
Heat sources named Gas stoves, campfires, grills, tailgating
Electric, glass, induction Not named
Waffle size 7 in diameter
Hinge Two-piece hinged; separation not stated
Seasoning Not stated; first-use oil-and-heat steps given
Outline 11.82 x 6.69 x 0.57 in
Listed weight Not stated
Handle material Not stated; oven gloves advised
Seller GAQUECY Parts Store
Best Sellers Rank #97,692 overall; #180 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

The title does the sorting for you. “7 Inch Cast Iron Waffle Maker for Gas Stove or Camping Grill”. The bullets widen it: the iron “performs flawlessly on gas stoves, campfires, grills, or while tailgating”. That is the gas-and-fire profile of most of this page, with one of the broadest outdoor lists. It does not name an electric hob, a glass top or induction.

It is one of two listings that tells you to protect your hands. “Use oven gloves for safe flipping and handling of this non-electric appliance.” Only Lot45 says something similar, recommending pot holders. Every iron here gets hot right up the handle, because the handle is either metal or attached to metal that sits in the flame, and this listing is one of the few to say so. Do not count on bare hands with any of them.

It gives first-use steps rather than a seasoning claim. “Before First Use cast iron waffle maker, Wash with warm water (no soap), boil water to remove residues, apply a thin oil layer and heat.” It suggests starting with fatty foods like bacon and avoiding acidic or spicy food. The listing never says the iron arrives pre-seasoned, so read that as a factory coating of oil at most, and plan to season it before your first waffle. The surface, it says, “improves over time”.

The waffle size is clear; the rest is thinner. It states 7-inch waffles, the same as Lehmans. The hinge is “two-piece hinged”, with no word on whether the halves separate. The spec table gives an 11.82 by 6.69 inch outline and a height of 0.57 inches, and no weight. The bullet copy repeats a full sentence word for word, and claims golden-brown waffles “with no hot spots”, which no listing can promise over a campfire.

What to weigh. It ranks #97,692 overall and #180 in Waffle Irons, and is sold by GAQUECY Parts Store. No warranty is stated. For a buyer who wants one 7-inch iron for a gas hob indoors and a grill or campfire outdoors, it names all three. Grill and campfire use belongs outdoors only, away from tents, garages and any enclosed space, because of carbon monoxide.

Pros

  • 7 in waffles stated
  • Gas, campfire, grill and tailgating named
  • Advises oven gloves in writing
  • Clear first-use steps
  • Compact 11.82 in outline
  • Suits commercial breakfast use, it says

Cons

  • Electric, glass and induction not named
  • Pre-seasoning not stated
  • No listed weight
  • Hinge separation not stated
  • “No hot spots” overclaims
  • No warranty stated

Best for: A gas-stove household that also wants a 7-inch iron for the grill or campfire, and will season it first.

5. Professional 8-inch Cast Iron Waffle Maker Stove Top, Non-Coated (LD HuYY) — Best for Induction

Round black cast iron waffle iron divided into four wedges with two turned wooden handles

The only iron here that names gas, electric and induction together, with wooden handles and a hinge that comes apart.

Key Specifications

Material Cast iron, non-coated, handmade
Heat sources named Gas stoves, electric cooktops, induction burners
Campfire, grill, glass Not named
Waffle size 8 in diameter, 4 wedge-shaped waffles
Hinge Detachable
Seasoning Not stated; seasoning steps given
Listed weight 8 lb (title); 7.72 lb (spec table)
Outline 10 x 8 x 1.48 in (spec table)
Handle material Wood, two handles
Seller LiDad
Best Sellers Rank #62,595 overall; #130 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

This is the broadest indoor list on the page. “This cast iron waffle maker works seamlessly on gas stoves, electric cooktops, and induction burners.” Three listings name induction, and this is the only one of the three that also names an electric hob in a sentence of its own. The Aurionix names all three too, inside its claim of “all stovetops”. Cast iron is magnetic, so induction is physically plausible for any of these irons; the difference is that this seller has committed to it in writing. Glass-ceramic tops are not named, and an induction hob is glass on top, so lift the iron to turn it rather than sliding it.

It makes the largest stated waffle here. “Make 4 wedge-shaped Belgian waffles (8-inch diameter) in one go.” An 8-inch round covers about 50 square inches, against about 28 for a 6-inch round, by our arithmetic: nearly 1.8 times the waffle per batch. The four-wedge grid means each round breaks into portions. The DVK also says 8 inches, but does not say whether that is the waffle.

The handles are wood, and the hinge comes apart. “Equipped with two ergonomic wooden handles that stay cool to the touch”, it says, allowing “safe, comfortable flipping without oven mitts”. Wood does stay cooler than iron, but the hinge and plates sit in the heat and your knuckles pass close to them on every flip; we would wear gloves regardless. The “detachable hinge design makes seasoning, cleaning, and storage a breeze”, which puts it with Lehmans and Nordic Ware as one of only three listings whose halves separate.

It does not say pre-seasoned; it gives the steps. “Coat with vegetable oil, bake at 392F/200C for 30 minutes, repeat 2-3 times.” The title says “Non-Coated Surface”, and a bullet says the iron is free of PFAS, PFOA and PTFE. Read that as an iron you should season two or three times before the first batch. Hand wash only; no dishwasher.

What to weigh. The title says 8 pounds; the spec table says 7.72. Either way it is in the Lehmans’ weight class, so expect to lift the full mass with every flip. It ranks #62,595 overall and #130 in Waffle Irons, and is sold by LiDad. It does not name a campfire or grill, and wooden handles are not something we would hold over an open fire. No warranty is stated. For an induction or electric kitchen, it is the most clearly documented iron on the page.

Pros

  • Gas, electric and induction all named
  • 8 in waffle, largest stated here
  • Four wedges per round
  • Detachable hinge
  • Wooden handles
  • Non-coated; PFAS, PFOA and PTFE free, stated

Cons

  • Glass-ceramic not named
  • Campfire and grill not named
  • Two weights given, 8 lb and 7.72 lb
  • Pre-seasoning not stated
  • “No oven mitts” claim; wear gloves anyway
  • No warranty stated

Best for: An induction or electric-hob kitchen that wants an 8-inch round in four wedges and will season the iron first.

6. UKENEM Cast Iron Waffle Maker with Low Base, Retro, Five Waffle Shapes — Best for Shaped Waffles

Round cast iron waffle iron with heart, star and flower shapes, set in a shallow round base

Five shapes in one round, a low base to catch drips, and induction named; the listing never says how big the waffle is.

Key Specifications

Material Cast iron
Heat sources named Gas stove, induction cooktop, campfire grill
Electric, glass Not named
Waffle size Not stated; heart, star, diamond, flower, square
Hinge Two-piece hinged; 360° rotation
Seasoning Pre-seasoned
Base Low curved base to catch batter
Handle material Cast iron; “stay cool-to-touch” claimed
Weight and size Spec table placeholders; not printed
Seller UKENEM US
Best Sellers Rank #166,271 overall; #256 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

This is the only iron here with a base, and it is what makes it different. “Our cast iron waffle maker features a unique low base with curved design to catch excess batter and distribute heat evenly.” The hinge offers “360° rotation”, so the iron turns in place rather than being lifted and flipped. That is the old diner-iron pattern, and it answers two problems at once: overflow lands in the base rather than on your burner, and you are not lifting the full iron for every turn.

It names induction, gas and a campfire grill. “Recreate diner-style thin waffles on your gas stove, induction cooktop, or campfire grill.” It is one of three listings to name induction. What it does not explain is how the base and the hob interact: whether the base sits on the glass and the iron turns above it, and how much of the iron the induction coil can reach through it. On induction, ask the seller before you rely on it. Electric coil and glass-ceramic tops are not named. A campfire grill is outdoor use only, never in a tent or enclosed space, because of carbon monoxide.

The handles are cast iron, and the cool-touch claim needs care. “Ergonomic cast iron handles stay cool-to-touch for safe, comfortable control – no wooden handles to crack or splinter!” Cast iron conducts heat. Handles cast from it may stay cooler than the plates, but over a gas flame or a campfire for the length of a waffle session, plan for them to get hot and wear gloves. It is the only listing here that specifies cast iron handles.

Five shapes, no size. “Create smiles with heart, star, diamond, flower, and square waffles in one classic round waffle iron.” The Aurionix offers the same five shapes. Neither gives a diameter, and the UKENEM’s spec table lists 1 by 1 by 1 inches and 1 pound, which cannot describe a cast iron iron with a base. The title also borrows Lehmans’ wording almost exactly, “Pre-Seasoned Two Piece Hinged Non-Drip Double Rim for Stove Top or Grill Makes”, and stops before the size. For shaped waffles in general, our heart-shaped waffle maker roundup compares irons built around that idea.

What to weigh. It is pre-seasoned, sold by UKENEM US, and ranks #166,271 overall and #256 in Waffle Irons. No warranty is stated. If a drip-catching base, a turning hinge and shaped waffles appeal, it is the only iron here that combines them. Get the diameter and the real weight from the seller first.

Pros

  • Low base catches overflow
  • 360° turning hinge
  • Gas, induction and campfire grill named
  • Five shapes in one round

7. Lot45 Cast Iron Waffle Maker Pan, 6in Stove Top Waffle Iron — Best Small Camp Iron

Small round black cast iron waffle iron with two short handles resting on a wooden surface

The smallest waffle here, 6 inches, and the one listing that says plainly it arrives unseasoned.

Key Specifications

Material Cast iron
Heat sources named Campfire, gas stove, 2-burner camp stove
Electric, glass, induction Not named
Waffle size 6 in (15 cm) diameter
Hinge Not stated; “close both lids”
Seasoning Unseasoned, stated
Listed weight 4.4 lb
Outline 11.5 x 7 x 1 in
Handle Approx. 4 in; material not stated; pot holders advised
Seller Marketplace Pros
Best Sellers Rank #123,445 overall; #208 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

This is a camp iron first. The opening bullet pictures it “while sitting around the campfire”, and the heat list reads: “Use a campfire, gas stove, or 2-burner camp stove when cooking breakfast.” A gas stove makes it usable indoors on a gas hob, but electric, glass and induction are not named. Over a campfire or camp stove, cook in the open only, never in a tent, vestibule or enclosed space, because of carbon monoxide.

It is the only listing that says unseasoned. “Cast iron comes unseasoned.” Five others say pre-seasoned and several say nothing, so this is a rare straight answer. It means bare iron: wash, dry, oil thinly and bake or heat it several times before the first batch, or the first waffles will stick and the iron may rust. The same seasoning routine used for cast iron pans applies here unchanged.

Six inches is the smallest stated waffle on the page. “Cast iron camp waffle maker measures 6 inches (15cm) in diameter to make small grid waffles.” The ROME also states 6-inch waffles. By our arithmetic a 6-inch round is about 28 square inches, a little over half the 8-inch rounds on the Professional 8-inch. For a camp breakfast that means more batches, but it also means a lighter iron to hold over a fire: 4.4 pounds listed, in an 11.5 by 7 inch outline.

The handles are short, and the listing says to protect your hands. The handle “measures approximately 4 inches (10cm)”, and the instructions say “We recommend cooking using pot holders while cooking”, noting that pot holders are not included. Four inches over a campfire puts your hand close to the coals, so long gloves are the better choice. The handle material is not stated, and neither is the hinge: the listing says to fill one lid, “Close both lids and flip waffle pan over to cook”.

What to weigh. It ranks #123,445 overall and #208 in Waffle Irons, and is sold by Marketplace Pros. No warranty is stated. If you want a small iron for a camp stove and a gas hob, and you are happy to season it yourself, it sits with the HAWOK and the ROME in the light group on this page, all under 4.5 pounds listed.

Pros

  • Campfire, gas stove and camp stove named
  • 4.4 lb listed, easy to pack
  • Unseasoned stated clearly
  • Pot holders advised in writing
  • Simple fill-close-flip instructions
  • 11.5 x 7 in outline

Cons

  • Smallest waffle here, 6 in
  • Arrives unseasoned
  • Short 4 in handle over a fire
  • Hinge not described
  • Electric, glass and induction not named
  • No warranty stated

Best for: A camper with a 2-burner stove or a campfire who wants a small, light iron and will season it before the trip.

8. Aurionix Cast Iron American Waffle Maker, Pre-Seasoned, 5-in-1 Shapes — Best Heavyweight

Heavy round cast iron waffle iron with heart, star and flower moulds and two long handles

It claims every stovetop and lists the most weight on the page, but no size and no outline.

Key Specifications

Material Cast iron, non-coated
Heat sources named All stovetops (induction, gas, electric) and camp grills
Glass-ceramic, campfire Not named
Waffle size Not stated; rhombic, square, heart, flower, star
Hinge Not stated
Seasoning Pre-seasoned
Listed weight 11.6 lb
Outline Not stated
Handle material Not stated
Seller Aurionix
Best Sellers Rank #192,990 overall; #290 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

It makes the widest stovetop claim here. “Designed for all stovetops (induction, gas, electric) and camp grills.” It is one of three listings to name induction and one of four to name an electric hob. What it does not do is name glass or ceramic. “All stovetops” would include them, but the brackets list three kinds and stop, and Lehmans, at the other end of the page, rules glass out for its own iron. On a smooth glass top, follow your stove maker’s guidance on heavy cast iron, because this listing does not address it directly.

The weight is the headline the listing does not shout. The spec table gives 11.6 pounds, the most on the page and about 3.6 pounds more than the Lehmans, by our arithmetic. No outline, no diameter and no base are given, so we cannot say whether that figure includes a stand or packaging. If it is the iron alone, it stores a great deal of heat and asks a lot of your wrists. On a glass top, weight is also a reason to lift, never slide.

Five shapes, like the UKENEM. “5-in-1 (rhombic, square, heart, flower, star) for varied waffle shapes.” The title calls it a “Round waffle maker” and an “American Waffle Maker”, and gives no diameter. Neither shaped iron on this page tells you how big its waffles are.

The surface claims are about coatings. “The pre-seasoned surface is PFAS, PFOA, and PTFE-free”, and the iron is “non-coated”. That is true of bare cast iron generally. The listing goes further, saying the iron supplements “iron minerals into your diet”; treat that as marketing rather than a reason to buy. Care is hand washing with mild soap, towel drying and a light oil.

What to weigh. It ranks #192,990 overall and #290 in Waffle Irons, and is sold by Aurionix. No warranty is stated, and neither are the hinge type or handle material. It names camp grills but not a campfire, so keep it to a grill grate outdoors, never in an enclosed space. For an induction kitchen that wants shaped waffles and the most iron on the page, it is the only choice; get the diameter and outline first.

Pros

  • Induction, gas and electric named
  • Camp grills named
  • Heaviest listed, 11.6 lb
  • Five shapes
  • Pre-seasoned
  • Non-coated; PFAS, PFOA and PTFE free, stated

Cons

  • No waffle diameter
  • No outline or dimensions
  • Glass-ceramic not named
  • Hinge and handle material not stated
  • 11.6 lb to lift and turn
  • Dietary iron claim is marketing

Best for: An induction or electric kitchen that wants shaped waffles and maximum mass, once the seller confirms the size.

9. HAWOK Cast Iron Waffle Maker, 6.7 Inch Round, Pre-Seasoned — Best Compact Pack

Compact round cast iron waffle iron with two hinged halves and short twin handles

A pre-seasoned 6.7-inch head on an 11.8-inch body, light enough for a camp box at 3.41 pounds.

Key Specifications

Material Cast iron
Heat sources named Gas stovetops, camping stoves, open-flame outdoor cooking
Electric, glass, induction Not named
Waffle size Approx. 6.5 in round (6.7 in head)
Hinge Two-piece hinged; separation not stated
Seasoning Pre-seasoned
Overall length Approx. 11.8 in (12 x 6.7 x 0.9 in in spec table)
Listed weight 3.41 lb
Handle material Not stated
Seller HAWOK
Best Sellers Rank #201,825 overall; #302 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

This listing separates the head from the waffle, which is rarer than it should be. “6.7-INCH ROUND COOKING HEAD: Makes approximately 6.5-inch round waffles.” Only the HAWOK and the ROME give both figures. The difference matters because sellers tend to quote the larger one, and a buyer comparing an “8-inch” iron with a “7-inch” one may be comparing a head with a waffle.

It is written for gas and outdoor flame. “Suitable for gas stovetops, camping stoves and open-flame outdoor cooking.” That is the majority profile on this page, and it leaves out electric, glass and induction. Open-flame cooking and camping stoves belong outdoors only, never inside a tent or any enclosed space, because of carbon monoxide.

It is the lightest cast iron iron here with a stated weight. The spec table lists 3.41 pounds and an outline of 12 by 6.7 by 0.9 inches; the bullet says “Approximately 11.8 inches overall length, making it easy to pack for camping, RV trips and travel.” Only the cast aluminium Nordic Ware is lighter, by a hundredth of a pound. Less iron means less stored heat, so the plates will cool more when batter goes in and recover faster when you turn the flame up.

It is pre-seasoned and hinged, and that is most of what the listing says. “PRE-SEASONED CAST IRON: Durable cast iron construction provides excellent heat retention and even heating.” The hinge is “TWO-PIECE HINGED”, which “Opens easily for adding batter, checking waffles and removing cooked food”; whether the halves separate is not stated. Handle material is not stated, and at under 12 inches overall the handles are short, so use gloves.

What to weigh. It ranks #201,825 overall and #302 in Waffle Irons, and is sold by HAWOK. No warranty is stated. For a camp box or an RV drawer, it is the most compact pre-seasoned round on the page, with a waffle size you can actually rely on.

Pros

  • States head and waffle size separately
  • Gas, camp stove and open flame named
  • Lightest iron with a stated weight, 3.41 lb
  • Pre-seasoned
  • About 11.8 in long; packs small
  • Simple two-piece hinge

Cons

  • Electric, glass and induction not named
  • Approx. 6.5 in waffle
  • Short handles; material not stated
  • Hinge separation not stated
  • Stores less heat than the 8 lb irons
  • No warranty stated

Best for: A camper or RV owner who wants a small, pre-seasoned iron with an honest waffle size.

10. ROME Chuckwagon Cast Iron Waffle Iron for BBQ Grill and Campfire, 1028 — Best for Campfire

Round cast iron waffle iron head on long steel rods ending in two wooden handles

The only iron built to keep your hands well back from a fire, and the only one that names no kitchen hob.

Key Specifications

Material Cast iron head, steel rods, wood handles
Heat sources named BBQ grill, campfire, camping stove
Kitchen hobs None named
Waffle size 6 in diameter (6-3/4 in head)
Overall length 23 in
Hinge Not stated
Seasoning Not stated
Listed weight 4.25 lb
Warranty 10 years
Seller Rome Industries
Best Sellers Rank #215,467 overall; #314 in Waffle Irons

Why We Recommend It

This is a fire iron, not a stovetop iron. The title says “For BBQ Grill and Campfire Use”, and the first bullet adds a camping stove: “Makes tasty waffles on the bbq grill, campfire, camping stove.” It is the only listing of the ten that does not name a gas stove or any kitchen hob. Amazon even files it under an automotive binding. Treat it as outdoor equipment, and use it outdoors only, never in a tent, garage or enclosed space, because of carbon monoxide.

Its length is the safety feature. “6 3/4” cooking head by 23” overall length.” The head sits on “steel rods and wood handles”, so your hands are more than a foot from the iron. The irons with short handles, about 4 inches on the Lot45 and 4-1/2 on the Lehmans, put your hand near the coals; this one does not. The steel rods will still get hot near the head, and sparks travel, so gloves are still sensible.

It is one of two listings with a warranty. “10 year warranty”, the same term as the Nordic Ware, from “a family run business that has been making outdoor cookware since 1964”. No other cast iron listing here states a warranty.

The waffle is small and clearly sized. It “makes 6” diameter waffles” from a 6-3/4 inch head, one of two listings to give both figures. That is the joint smallest waffle on the page with the Lot45, about 28 square inches by our arithmetic, but a small head is what you want on a long iron over a fire, where weight at the end of 23 inches is leverage against your wrists. The listed weight is 4.25 pounds. The listing does not say whether it arrives seasoned, or whether the halves separate.

What to weigh. It ranks #215,467 overall and #314 in Waffle Irons, and is sold by Rome Industries. For a campfire, it is the iron the listings support best: the long reach, wood handles and a warranty. For a kitchen hob, it is the one listing on the page that does not claim to suit one. For cooking over the same fire, our camping Dutch oven roundup covers pots built for coals.

Pros

  • 23 in overall keeps hands back from the fire
  • Wood handles on steel rods
  • BBQ grill, campfire and camping stove named
  • 10 year warranty
  • States head and waffle size
  • 4.25 lb listed

Cons

  • No kitchen hob named
  • Joint smallest waffle, 6 in
  • Pre-seasoning not stated
  • Hinge not described
  • Rods heat near the head
  • Outdoor use only

Best for: Campfire and grill cooks who want long reach and a warranty, and have no plans to use it on a kitchen hob.

Nine Name Gas, Three Name Induction, One Names Glass

The table below logs every heat source each listing names in words. A blank means the listing does not mention it, which is not the same as saying it will not work. Only one listing, Lehmans, rules anything out, and that is marked.

Iron Gas hob Electric hob Glass or ceramic Induction Grill Campfire or open flame Camping stove
Lehmans Yes, best Yes No, stated No, stated Yes Open flame —
DVK Yes — — — — Open fires Yes
Nordic Ware (aluminium) Yes Yes Ceramic, yes — — — —
GAQUECY 7 in Yes — — — Yes Campfires —
Professional 8-inch Yes Yes — Yes — — —
UKENEM Yes — — Yes Campfire grill Campfire grill —
Lot45 Yes — — — — Campfire 2-burner
Aurionix Yes Yes — Yes Camp grills — —
HAWOK Yes — — — — Open flame Yes
ROME — — — — BBQ grill Campfire Yes

Gas is the common language. Nine of ten name a gas hob. A gas flame suits a cast iron waffle iron for practical reasons: the grate holds a round iron steady while you turn it, the flame wraps the base whatever its shape, and you can see and adjust the heat instantly. Lehmans calls gas and open flame best, and the rest of the page agrees by naming it first or alone.

Electric hobs are named four times. Lehmans, the Nordic Ware, the Professional 8-inch and the Aurionix. A coil element heats only where it touches, so a round iron on a coil may brown in a ring pattern; turning the iron and allowing a longer preheat helps. Lehmans says its iron “also usable on electric stovetops”, which is a fair way to put it.

Induction is named three times, and refused once. The Professional 8-inch, the UKENEM and the Aurionix name it. Lehmans says its iron is not compatible. Cast iron is magnetic, so the physics allow it, but a round iron with a raised hinge has to sit flat on the glass for the coil to couple with it, and an induction hob is still a glass top that heavy iron can scratch. If induction is your hob, buy one of the three that say so, and lift it to turn it.

Glass-ceramic is named once, by the iron that is not iron. The Nordic Ware says ceramic stovetops. No cast iron listing does, and Lehmans rules smooth glass out. A heavy iron dropped or dragged on glass can scratch or crack it, and some stove makers caution against heavy cast iron on their tops. Where a listing is silent on glass, advise caution and follow your stove maker’s guidance before you buy.

Outdoors, the fire list is long. Seven name a campfire or open flame, five name a grill and four name a camping stove. All of that is outdoor use only. Never cook over charcoal, wood or a gas camping stove inside a tent, vestibule, garage, caravan awning or any enclosed space: burning fuel makes carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. Keep grills clear of walls, railings and overhangs.

A campsite with a folding chair among trees
Seven listings name a campfire or open flame; all of that belongs in the open air, never in a tent.

Hinge, Seasoning, Size and Handles, Counted

Once two irons share a hob, these four details decide which one is easier to live with. The table records each exactly as the listing states it.

Iron Halves separate? Seasoning Waffle size Handle material Listed weight
Lehmans Yes, stated Pre-seasoned (soybean oil) Approx. 7 in Not stated Around 8 lb
DVK No; handles detach Pre-seasoned 8 in (head or waffle unclear) Not stated Not stated
Nordic Ware Yes, stated Non-stick coated 7.1 x 7.1 in surface Not stated (imported) 3.4 lb
GAQUECY 7 in Not stated Not stated; first-use steps 7 in Not stated Not stated
Professional 8-inch Yes, stated Not stated; steps given 8 in, 4 wedges Wood 8 lb / 7.72 lb
UKENEM Not stated Pre-seasoned Not stated Cast iron Placeholder
Lot45 Not stated Unseasoned, stated 6 in Not stated 4.4 lb
Aurionix Not stated Pre-seasoned Not stated Not stated 11.6 lb
HAWOK Not stated Pre-seasoned Approx. 6.5 in Not stated 3.41 lb
ROME Not stated Not stated 6 in Wood, on steel rods 4.25 lb

Three hinges come apart. Lehmans, the Nordic Ware and the Professional 8-inch say their halves separate. The DVK’s handles detach but its hinge does not. Three more, the GAQUECY, UKENEM and HAWOK, say “two-piece hinged” without saying whether the pieces separate, and three do not describe the hinge at all. A separating hinge matters most when you clean and season: each plate can lie flat in the sink or in the oven, and batter in the hinge is easy to reach.

Five arrive seasoned, one says it does not. Lehmans, DVK, UKENEM, Aurionix and HAWOK say pre-seasoned. Lot45 says unseasoned. The GAQUECY and Professional 8-inch give seasoning steps without claiming a seasoned start, the ROME says nothing, and the Nordic Ware is coated instead. Even the pre-seasoned irons improve with more: Lehmans itself recommends re-seasoning at home before relying on the factory finish.

Waffles run from 6 to 8 inches. Two state 8 inches, the Professional 8-inch and the DVK, though only the first says that is the waffle. Two state 7 inches, Lehmans and the GAQUECY, and the Nordic Ware gives a 7.1-inch square surface. The HAWOK makes about 6.5 inches; the Lot45 and ROME make 6. The two shaped irons give no size. By our arithmetic, an 8-inch round is about 50 square inches, a 7-inch about 38, and a 6-inch about 28.

Seven do not say what the handles are made of. The Professional 8-inch and the ROME use wood; the UKENEM uses cast iron and claims it stays cool. Two listings, the GAQUECY and Lot45, tell you to use oven gloves or pot holders. Whatever the material, the handles attach to iron that has been in a flame. Wear heat-resistant gloves for every flip, on every iron here.

Weights run from 3.41 to 11.6 pounds on the cast iron listings. The Aurionix lists 11.6, the Lehmans about 8 and the Professional 8-inch 8 or 7.72. The light group is the Lot45 at 4.4, the ROME at 4.25 and the HAWOK at 3.41. Heavier irons store more heat between batches; lighter ones are easier to turn and to pack. Two listings give no weight, and the UKENEM’s figure is a placeholder.

Best Sellers Rank Across the Ten

All ten are filed in Waffle Irons, so for once the category ranks compare directly.

Iron Overall rank Waffle Irons rank Heat sources named
Lehmans #29,137 #70 Gas, electric, grill, open flame
DVK #41,726 #95 Gas, camp stove, open fire
Nordic Ware #53,819 #115 Gas, electric, ceramic
Professional 8-inch #62,595 #130 Gas, electric, induction
GAQUECY 7 in #97,692 #180 Gas, campfire, grill
Lot45 #123,445 #208 Campfire, gas, camp stove
UKENEM #166,271 #256 Gas, induction, campfire grill
Aurionix #192,990 #290 Induction, gas, electric, camp grills
HAWOK #201,825 #302 Gas, camp stove, open flame
ROME #215,467 #314 BBQ grill, campfire, camp stove

The top two are gas-first irons. Lehmans and DVK hold the two best ranks, and neither names induction or glass; Lehmans refuses both. The best-ranked induction listing, the Professional 8-inch, is fourth. Whatever shoppers are buying cast iron waffle irons for, the leaders on this page are the ones written for a flame.

Best Alternatives

Alternative Why Consider It Better For Main Trade-Off
An electric waffle maker; see our electric waffle maker roundup Its own element and thermostat Glass and induction kitchens Needs a socket; no campfire use
A thick Belgian electric iron; see our thick waffle maker guide Deeper pockets than any round here Tall, fluffy waffles Electric only; bulkier to store

A coated aluminium stovetop iron, such as the Nordic Ware Light, coated and ceramic-hob rated Glass-ceramic hobs Less stored heat; not for induction

What Each Step Up Actually Buys

The small camp irons — Lot45, HAWOK, ROME. Six to about 6.5 inch waffles, 3.41 to 4.4 pounds, and fire or camp-stove use named on all three. The Lot45 adds a gas hob and arrives unseasoned; the HAWOK adds pre-seasoning and an honest head-and-waffle size; the ROME adds 23 inches of reach, wood handles and a 10 year warranty, and drops the kitchen hob entirely.

The 7-inch gas irons — GAQUECY and Lehmans. Stepping up to a 7-inch round adds about a third more waffle per batch over a 6-inch, by our arithmetic. The GAQUECY adds grill and campfire to the gas hob; the Lehmans adds the best rank, an electric hob, halves that separate, pre-seasoning, a double rim and about 8 pounds of stored heat, and refuses glass and induction in writing.

The 8-inch irons — DVK and Professional 8-inch. The largest figures on the page. The DVK buys pre-seasoning and packable handles for gas and fire; the Professional 8-inch buys induction and electric, wooden handles, a separating hinge and four wedges, and asks you to season it first.

The shaped irons — UKENEM and Aurionix. Five shapes, pre-seasoning and induction named on both. The UKENEM adds a drip-catching base and a turning hinge; the Aurionix adds the most weight on the page. Neither gives a waffle size.

The outlier — Nordic Ware. Not a step up in iron but a step sideways: cast aluminium, coated, 3.4 pounds, a 10 year warranty and the only ceramic hob on the page.

What to Check Before You Buy

Find Your Hob in the Listing’s Own Words

Nine name gas, four name electric, three name induction and one names ceramic, and that one is aluminium. If your hob is not named, the seller has not promised it. Lehmans is the only listing that tells you where not to use its iron, and it rules out induction and smooth glass.

On Glass, Follow the Listing, Then the Stove Maker

No cast iron listing here names a glass-ceramic top. If you cook on glass, read your stove’s manual on heavy cast iron, lift the iron rather than sliding or spinning it, and never drop it onto the surface. Where the listing and the manual are both silent, a non-electric aluminium iron or an electric waffle maker is the cautious choice.

Decide Whether the Hinge Should Come Apart

Three listings say the halves separate: Lehmans, Nordic Ware and the Professional 8-inch. Separate halves are easier to scrub, season in the oven and dry fully. A fixed hinge is simpler and cannot come apart mid-flip, but batter that creeps into it is harder to reach.

Check What Seasoning You Are Getting

Five say pre-seasoned, the Lot45 says unseasoned, and the rest say nothing or give steps. An unseasoned iron needs several rounds of thin oil and heat before batter. Even a pre-seasoned one benefits from a round or two; Lehmans recommends it outright.

Ask Whether the Size Is the Waffle or the Head

Only the HAWOK and the ROME give both. The HAWOK’s 6.7-inch head makes about 6.5-inch waffles; the ROME’s 6-3/4 inch head makes 6-inch waffles. The DVK’s 8 inches could be either, and the two shaped irons give no size at all.

Plan for Hot Handles

Two listings use wood, one uses cast iron and seven do not say. Every handle here attaches to iron that has been in a flame. Wear heat-resistant gloves for every flip; over a campfire, longer gloves or the ROME’s 23-inch reach keep your hands further from the coals.

Keep Fire and Grill Use Outdoors

Seven listings name a campfire or open flame and five name a grill. Use them in the open air only, never in a tent, garage, awning or any enclosed space, because burning fuel produces carbon monoxide. Keep grills clear of walls and railings, and let the iron cool fully before you pack it.

Five irons arrive pre-seasoned and one says unseasoned; every one rewards a thin coat of oil after use.

Common Mistakes

  • Buying a cast iron iron for a glass top without checking. None of the nine cast iron listings names glass-ceramic, and Lehmans rules it out.
  • Assuming the Nordic Ware is cast iron. Its title says cast aluminum; it weighs 3.4 lb and carries a non-stick coating.
  • Assuming any cast iron works on induction. Three listings name induction; the best-ranked iron here says it is not compatible.
  • Trusting a cool-touch handle claim. The UKENEM’s handles are cast iron; two listings tell you to use gloves or pot holders.
  • Cooking on the first day with an unseasoned iron. The Lot45 says it arrives unseasoned; it needs several rounds of oil and heat first.
  • Comparing an 8-inch head with a 7-inch waffle. The HAWOK’s 6.7 in head makes about 6.5 in waffles; the DVK does not say which its 8 in is.
  • Taking a campfire iron into a tent. Seven listings name a campfire or open flame; carbon monoxide makes that outdoors-only use.
  • Expecting the ROME to work on a hob. It names a BBQ grill, a campfire and a camping stove, and no kitchen hob at all.

Who Should Buy Which

Buy the Lehmans if you cook on gas or an electric coil. The best rank here, #70 in Waffle Irons, halves that separate, pre-seasoning, a double rim and about 8 pounds of iron for 7-inch rounds. Accept that the seller rules out induction and smooth glass, and that the handle material is not stated.

Buy the DVK if you want 8 inches for gas and open fire. Pre-seasoned, with detachable handles for packing. Accept that it does not say whether 8 inches is the waffle, and gives no weight.

Buy the Nordic Ware if your hob is glass-ceramic and you want a non-electric iron. The only listing that names a ceramic hob, with a 10 year warranty. Accept that it is cast aluminium with a coating, not cast iron, and was scarce at capture.

Buy the GAQUECY 7 Inch if you want one iron for a gas hob, a grill and a campfire. All three are named, with 7-inch waffles. Accept that it gives no weight and does not say it is pre-seasoned.

Buy the Professional 8-inch if you cook on induction or electric. Both are named, with gas, plus 8-inch rounds in four wedges, wooden handles and a detachable hinge. Accept that you should season it first and that campfire use is not named.

Buy the UKENEM if you want shaped waffles and a base that catches drips. Five shapes, a turning hinge, pre-seasoning, and induction named. Get the diameter and weight from the seller first.

Buy the Lot45 if you want a small, light camp iron and will season it yourself. 6-inch waffles, 4.4 pounds, campfire, gas and camp stove named. Accept short handles and a bare iron.

Buy the Aurionix if you want the most iron and an induction claim. 11.6 pounds listed, five shapes, pre-seasoned. Accept that it gives no size or outline.

Buy the HAWOK if you want the most compact pre-seasoned round. About 11.8 inches long, 3.41 pounds, with an honest 6.5-inch waffle size. Accept that it names only gas and outdoor flame.

Buy the ROME Chuckwagon if your waffles are made over a fire. 23 inches of reach, wood handles and a 10 year warranty. Accept 6-inch waffles and no kitchen hob at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best cast iron waffle maker?

For a gas or electric-coil kitchen, the Lehmans Cast Iron Waffle Maker. It holds the best Best Sellers Rank on this page, #70 in Waffle Irons, its two halves detach for cleaning and seasoning, it arrives pre-seasoned with soybean oil, and its double rim is designed to stop batter dripping onto the burner. It makes 7-inch rounds and weighs about 8 pounds. The catch is written into the listing: it is not compatible with induction or smooth glass cooktops. If you cook on induction, the Professional 8-inch is the better pick, because it names gas, electric and induction and makes 8-inch rounds with wooden handles and a detachable hinge. If your waffles will be made over a campfire, the ROME Chuckwagon puts 23 inches of steel rod and wood handle between you and the fire, and carries a 10 year warranty. Use any fire or grill iron outdoors only.

What is the best non electric waffle maker?

Every iron on this page is non-electric, so the answer depends on your heat source. On a gas hob, the Lehmans is the best-ranked choice, with detachable halves and pre-seasoning. On induction, choose one of the three listings that name it: the Professional 8-inch, the UKENEM or the Aurionix. On a glass-ceramic hob, the only listing here that names a ceramic stovetop is the Nordic Ware 15040, which is cast aluminium with a non-stick coating rather than cast iron, and comes with a 10 year warranty. Over a campfire, the ROME Chuckwagon is built for the job, with 23 inches of reach. For camping on a small stove, the HAWOK and Lot45 are light, at 3.41 and 4.4 pounds. Whichever you choose, wear heat-resistant gloves, because the handles of a stovetop iron get hot, and keep fire and grill use outdoors.

Can you use a cast iron waffle maker on a glass top stove?

Not on the evidence of these listings. None of the nine cast iron listings here names a glass or ceramic top, and the best-ranked one, the Lehmans, says plainly that it is not compatible with induction or smooth glass cooktops. The one listing that does name a ceramic stovetop is the Nordic Ware 15040, and it is cast aluminium, not iron. If you still want to use a cast iron iron on glass, check your stove maker’s manual first, because some caution against heavy cast iron. Lift the iron to turn it rather than sliding or spinning it on the surface, never drop it, and make sure the base sits flat. A rough or warped base can scratch the glass, and a heavy iron dropped from a flip can crack it. Where the listing and your manual are both silent, an electric waffle maker or a coated aluminium iron is the cautious choice.

Do cast iron waffle makers work on induction?

Cast iron is magnetic, so in principle an induction hob can heat it. In practice, only three listings here commit to it: the Professional 8-inch, which names gas, electric and induction; the UKENEM, which names gas, induction and a campfire grill; and the Aurionix, which says all stovetops including induction. The Lehmans, the best-ranked iron on the page, says its iron is not compatible with induction. The others do not mention it. Two practical points matter. First, an induction coil heats only metal sitting flat and close above it, so a round iron with a raised hinge or a curved base may couple poorly. Second, an induction hob is a glass surface, so lift the iron to flip it rather than sliding it. The UKENEM’s low base raises a further question the listing does not answer, so ask the seller how it works on induction before buying.

Is the Nordic Ware stovetop waffle iron cast iron?

No. The listing title is NordicWare 15040 Cast Aluminum Stovetop Belgium Waffle Iron, and a bullet repeats that it is made of cast aluminum for even heating. It also has a non-stick coating, which no cast iron iron on this page uses. It is included here because it is sold in the same Waffle Irons category and does the same job on a hob, and because it is the only listing on the page that names a ceramic stovetop alongside gas and electric. Aluminium changes the behaviour: at 3.4 pounds it is far lighter than the 8-pound cast iron irons, heats faster and stores less heat, so the plates cool more when batter goes in. It needs no seasoning, is fully submersible for cleaning, and carries a 10 year warranty. It will not work on induction, because aluminium is not magnetic. It was flagged as scarce stock at capture.

How do you season a cast iron waffle iron?

The listings give two methods, and both work on the same principle: a thin film of oil baked until it hardens into a slick layer. Lehmans recommends rubbing the iron with oil and baking it upside down in a 400 to 500°F oven for an hour, with a tray underneath, then letting it cool in the oven. The Professional 8-inch says to coat it with vegetable oil and bake at 392F for 30 minutes, repeating two or three times. The GAQUECY suggests washing, boiling water in it to lift residues, oiling and heating, then starting with fatty foods like bacon. The key is a very thin coat; Lehmans warns that too much oil leaves a sticky surface. An iron with halves that separate, like the Lehmans, is easier to season evenly. The Lot45 arrives unseasoned, so it needs this before its first use; pre-seasoned irons benefit from a round or two.

Are cast iron waffle iron handles safe to hold?

Treat every handle on this page as hot. Seven of the ten listings do not say what their handles are made of. The Professional 8-inch and the ROME use wood, and the Professional 8-inch says its handles stay cool enough to flip without oven mitts. The UKENEM uses cast iron handles and also claims they stay cool to the touch. Cast iron conducts heat, and even wooden handles sit close to a hinge and plates that have been in a flame, so your knuckles pass near hot metal on every flip. Two listings are more cautious: the GAQUECY tells you to use oven gloves and the Lot45 recommends pot holders. Wear heat-resistant gloves for every turn. Over a campfire, long gloves matter more, and the ROME’s 23-inch overall length keeps your hands well back from the coals.

Can you use a cast iron waffle maker over a campfire?

Seven listings name a campfire or open flame: the Lehmans, DVK, GAQUECY, UKENEM, Lot45, HAWOK and ROME. Five name a grill. The ROME Chuckwagon is the iron most clearly built for it, with a cast iron head on steel rods and wood handles, 23 inches long overall, so your hands stay back from the fire. Cook over a bed of coals rather than tall flames, which scorch the outside before the middle sets, and turn the iron often. Wear long heat-resistant gloves. Most important, campfire and grill cooking is for the open air only. Never use charcoal, wood or a gas camping stove inside a tent, vestibule, garage, awning or any enclosed space, because burning fuel produces carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. Keep grills clear of walls and railings, and let the iron cool fully before packing it away.

Final Verdict

Gas, electric and induction named, 8-inch rounds in four wedges, wooden handles and a detachable hinge.

Best for CampfireROME Chuckwagon Cast Iron Waffle Iron

23 inches of steel rod and wood handle, grill and campfire named, and a 10 year warranty.

Ten stovetop waffle irons, and the listings agree on one heat source. Nine name a gas stove. Seven name a campfire or open flame. After that the list thins: four name an electric hob, three name induction, and the best-ranked iron on the page rules induction and smooth glass out in writing.

The glass-top kitchen is the gap. One listing names a ceramic hob, and it is the Nordic Ware, which is cast aluminium with a coating. None of the nine cast iron listings says it suits glass. If that is your stove, follow your stove maker’s guidance before you buy cast iron, or choose the aluminium iron or an electric maker instead.

Once your hob is covered, compare four things. Three hinges separate. Five irons arrive seasoned and one says it does not. Waffles run from 6 to 8 inches, and only two listings tell you both the head and the waffle size. Two handles are wood, one is cast iron and seven are unstated, so wear gloves on all of them. And keep every campfire and grill session outdoors, never in a tent or enclosed space, because of carbon monoxide.

If you buy one iron from this page, make it the Lehmans: the best rank here, halves that come apart, a pre-seasoned start and a 7-inch round, on the gas or electric-coil hob its listing names. If you cook on induction, the Professional 8-inch names it alongside gas and electric; if your waffles are made over a fire, the ROME Chuckwagon gives you 23 inches of reach and a 10 year warranty.
