One Best Mini Freezer Locks, Another Is Rated for the Garage

A mini freezer is supposed to be the simple purchase. Read the ten best-selling small upright listings and the extras that separate a good one from a basic one are each on a different freezer. One has a lock, one says Energy Star, and one is rated for the garage. No freezer on the page has two of the three.

The lock is on the Whynter CUF-210SS, a cylinder lock with two keys. Energy Star is on the BLACK+DECKER BUFK12W, a 1.2 cu ft box. The garage rating is on the Danby DUFM032A3WDB-3: “Garage Ready: Freezer can perform in temperatures from 0F to 110F”. Three other listings name the garage as a place to put the freezer and give no temperature range for the room. Beyond those extras the details are thin: none says frost-free, one gives an energy figure and four print no temperature range at all.

This guide sorts the ten, from 1.1 to 6.0 cubic feet, by what each listing lets you check before it arrives. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup; popularity below is Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank only.

Best Sellers Ranks and specifications are taken from each manufacturer’s Amazon listing as displayed on 5 October 2026 through a United States connection, and may change. Ranges are as printed. The BANGSON prints -8°F to 7°F and -22°C to -14°C, the same Celsius range the EUHOMY and Antarctic Star print as -7.6°F to 6.8°F. The Upstreman and Danby both print -24°C to -12°C, or -11.2°F to 10.4°F. The BODACIOUS states only that it reaches -13°F in 12 hours. The BLACK+DECKER, Magic Chef and Commercial Cool give no range. “Not stated” in the defrost column means the listing does not name a defrost type; none of the ten claims frost-free or automatic defrost. The Commercial Cool title gives model CCUL50W and its spec table CCUL50W6. Ranks are Upright Freezers category ranks as returned on 5 October 2026; overall ranks run from #46 to #6,177. Six were sold by Amazon.com at capture; three were flagged scarce stock. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for any product here.

How We Chose These Ten

We researched current listings, compared manufacturer specifications and documentation, and read each listing’s claims about capacity, temperature, defrost and placement line by line. We did not carry out hands-on testing, and nothing below is presented as measured performance data. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup. We used Amazon Best Sellers Rank, buy-box stock and listing specifications instead, and nothing on this page describes or implies how owners have scored these freezers.

  • Small stand-alone upright freezers only — every product is a single-door freezer with no fresh-food section, from 1.1 to 6.0 cu ft, ranked by Amazon in Upright Freezers. Chest freezers, fridge-freezer combinations and full-height uprights were not in the running; they have their own guides.
  • One model per listing — where two listings carried the same model number, or the same part-number root with matching outlines, we kept one and replaced the other, so the ten are ten different freezers on paper.
  • Temperature range exactly as printed — in °F and, where given, °C. We noted the coldest and warmest settings against 0°F, the standard freezer target, and the number of dial positions.
  • A fixed feature count — for each listing: defrost type, reversible door, lock, shelves or drawers, Energy Star, annual kWh, stated noise, and any garage or ambient-temperature rating. A feature the listing does not name is counted as not stated.
  • Model numbers and ranges compared — we set every model and part number and every printed range side by side and flagged where they overlap.
  • Our arithmetic, labelled — litre conversions, footprints, temperature spans and steps per dial position are our arithmetic and are marked as such.
  • Popularity from Best Sellers Rank only — ranks are quoted exactly as returned on 5 October 2026. Ranks move constantly.
  • Verified stock and seller — each product was the buy-box offer and in stock on amazon.com on 5 October 2026. The BANGSON, EUHOMY and Magic Chef were flagged as scarce stock at capture.

The Ten Mini Freezers in Detail

1. Whynter Upright Freezer 2.1 Cu Ft with Lock, Stainless, CUF-210SS — Best Overall

Small upright freezer with a stainless steel door, black cabinet and a recessed handle

The only lock on the page, the tightest dial, and the best-selling of the ten.

Best Sellers Rank #46 overall; #2 in Upright Freezers

Why We Recommend It

This is the one freezer here you can lock. “Secure Storage: The perfect freezer for garages, offices, basements and other small spaces, this compact freezer includes a cylinder lock and 2 keys for added security when storing your food.” No other listing on the page mentions a lock of any kind. In a shared house, a dorm, an office or an unlocked garage, that is the feature that decides the purchase, and only one of ten offers it.

Its dial sits closer to 0°F than any other. “This compact freezer features a mechanical temperature control setting ranging from -10°– 2°F.” That is a 12°F span, by our arithmetic, the narrowest on the page, and the warmest setting is only 2°F above the 0°F standard target. On the 1.1 cu ft boxes the warm end is 6.8°F or 7°F; on the Upstreman and the Danby it is 10.4°F. A narrow range does not prove the cabinet holds any particular temperature, and the listing does not say how many positions the control has. It does mean there is less dial on the wrong side of zero to set by mistake.

The 2.1 cu ft capacity sits between the classes. That is about 59 litres, by our arithmetic, nearly twice a 1.1 cu ft box. At 27.5 inches tall it is about 8 inches taller than the countertop boxes and about 5 inches shorter than the 3 cu ft group, with a 20 by 17.5 inch footprint, 350 square inches by our arithmetic. Inside there is “a removable slide-out wire freezer shelf”, one shelf, stated. The listing pitches it as “An ideal ice cream freezer” and for “breast milk, frozen food, and more”.

The garage line is a suggestion, not a rating. The lock bullet itself calls this “The perfect freezer for garages”, and the first bullet lists “kitchen, office, basement or garage”. But no ambient-temperature range is printed. The Danby is the only listing here that says what room temperatures it can run in. If the Whynter is going into an unheated garage for the lock, ask Whynter for the ambient range first.

The listing is silent on several things the others state. It does not say the door reverses, which eight of the other nine do. It does not name a defrost type, give an energy figure, or give a noise level. The door is stainless steel with a “coordinating black cabinet” and a recessed handle that sits flush, the same look the Magic Chef describes for its 3.0 cu ft model.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #46 overall and #2 in Upright Freezers, the best rank on the page by a clear margin; the next best is the BANGSON at #112 overall. The model number, CUF-210SS, is its own. The release date field reads 6 July 2020, the only release date given on the page. Warranty is one year limited. If you need a lock, there is no second choice on this page.

Pros

  • Cylinder lock with 2 keys, the only lock here
  • Tightest stated dial: -10°F to 2°F
  • Best rank: #2 in Upright Freezers
  • Sold by Amazon.com
  • 2.1 cu ft, nearly double a 1.1 box
  • Stainless door, flush recessed handle

Cons

  • Reversible door not stated
  • Defrost type not stated
  • No energy or noise figure
  • One shelf stated
  • Garage named, no ambient rating
  • Number of dial positions not stated

Best for: A shared house, office or indoor space where a lock matters, and a buyer who wants the dial kept close to 0°F.

2. BLACK+DECKER 1.2 Cu Ft Compact Upright Freezer, White, BUFK12W — Best Small

Small white upright freezer about the height of a countertop with a flat door and plain front

The only Energy Star certification on the page, on a countertop box that prints no temperature range.

Key Specifications

Capacity 1.2 cu ft
Stated range Not stated; adjustable thermostat
Defrost Not stated
Reversible door Not stated
Lock Not stated
Storage One full-width wire shelf
Energy Energy Star certified; no kWh figure
Noise Not stated
Placement Office, bedroom or temperature-controlled basement
Size and weight 19.69 x 19.29 x 19.72 in; 40.77 lbs (bullet)
Model BUFK12W; 1 year parts and labor
Best Sellers Rank #1,690 overall; #51 in Upright Freezers

Why We Recommend It

This is the one freezer here that says Energy Star. “QUALITY GUARANTEED: Our compact freezer is Energy Star certified and UL Safety certified.” No other listing on the page makes the claim. Energy Star is a label with a published efficiency threshold, so it is the one energy statement on this page that rests on a common standard rather than a seller’s own figure. What the listing does not give is the kWh number behind it; to see that, you would look up the model, BUFK12W, in the Energy Star product finder.

It is a little bigger than the 1.1s, and noticeably heavier. “The 1.2 cu. ft. interior capacity of this BLACK+DECKER compact upright freezer allows for ample storage of your favorite foods.” That is about 34 litres, by our arithmetic, against about 31 for the BANGSON and EUHOMY. The box is close to a cube, “19.69″ x 19.29″ x 19.72″”, about the same height as the 1.1s on a wider base, about 388 square inches by our arithmetic. The listing gives its weight as “40.77 lbs.”, about 10 pounds more than the EUHOMY and 13 more than the BANGSON. Whether that reflects thicker insulation the listing does not say.

Its placement advice is the opposite of a garage claim. “Keep your new mini freezer (40.77 lbs.) in your office, bedroom or temperature-controlled basement.” Temperature-controlled is the important word. This is the only listing that, in effect, tells you to keep it indoors, and it is a useful honesty: most compact freezers are built for room temperatures, and only the Danby here is rated for anything wider.

It prints no temperature range. The listing mentions “an adjustable thermostat control” and stops there: no range, no cold end, no number of settings. It is one of four freezers on the page without a range. There is one “interior full-width wire shelf”, adjustable leveling legs and a “space-saving flat black design”, which reads oddly beside a white finish and probably refers to the flat back. Defrost type, a reversible door and noise are not mentioned.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #1,690 overall and #51 in Upright Freezers. Warranty is one year parts and labor. The part number field reads only “BLACK+DECKER”; the model field gives BUFK12W. Buy it if a recognised efficiency label matters more to you than a printed dial range, and put a thermometer in it on day one.

Pros

  • Energy Star certified, the only one here
  • UL Safety certified, stated
  • Sold by Amazon.com
  • 1.2 cu ft at countertop height
  • Full-width wire shelf; leveling legs
  • 1 year parts and labor

Cons

  • No temperature range stated
  • No kWh figure despite the label
  • Defrost type and reversible door not stated
  • 40.77 lbs, heavy for its size
  • Indoor, temperature-controlled use only
  • No noise figure

Best for: An office or bedroom that wants the smallest freezer here with a recognised efficiency label.

3. Danby 3.2 Cu Ft Upright Freezer, White, DUFM032A3WDB-3 — Best for Garages

White compact upright freezer about waist height with an integrated handle along the door edge

The only listing that says what room temperatures it can run in, with the longest warranty on the page.

Key Specifications

Capacity 3.2 cu ft (90 L)
Stated range -11.2°F to 10.4°F (-24°C to -12°C); mechanical thermostat
Defrost Manual defrost, stated
Reversible door Reversible door hinge
Lock Not stated
Storage 2 quick freeze shelves
Energy / noise Not stated / Not stated
Ambient rating Garage Ready: 0F to 110F (-17C to 43C)
Size and weight 32.69 H x 22.5 L x 20.69 W in; 59.3 lb
Warranty 5 years parts and labor, in-home service
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #6,177 overall; #207 in Upright Freezers

Why We Recommend It

This is the only freezer here with an ambient-temperature rating. The first bullet is “Garage Ready: Freezer can perform in temperatures from 0F to 110F (-17C to 43C).” Four listings on this page name the garage as a place to put a freezer. This is the only one that tells you the room temperatures it is built to work in. A freezer designed for indoor rooms can struggle when the space around it gets very cold or very hot; a stated range is what turns “use it in the garage” from a suggestion into a specification.

The warranty is the longest on the page by a distance. “5 years parts and labor coverage with in-home service.” Every other listing gives one year, except the Magic Chef, which adds five years on the compressor, part only. The Danby note excludes installation and yearly cleaning. For a freezer that will sit in a garage through hot summers, five years with in-home service is a substantial difference.

The spec sheet reads like a checklist. Manual defrost, stated. “2 quick freeze shelves”. “Easy-to-use mechanical thermostat”. “Integrated door handle”. “Reversible door hinge”. R600a refrigerant. Capacity is given in both units, “3.2 cu. ft. (90 L)”, and the conversion agrees, by our arithmetic. What it lacks is an energy figure, a noise figure and a lock.

Its range is the Upstreman’s range, to the decimal. “Maintains optimum freezing temperatures of -12°C (10.4°F) to -24°C (-11.2°F).” The Upstreman UP30 prints exactly the same pair. The two are also close in size, 3.2 and 3.0 cu ft, 32.69 and 31.6 inches tall, 20.69 and 20.3 inches wide. The model numbers differ, and the Danby is 59.3 pounds against 42.94, so we do not treat them as the same freezer; the shared range most likely reflects a common thermostat specification. Either way, the warm end sits 10.4°F above 0°F, so set it toward the cold end and check with a thermometer; see our freezer thermometer guide.

Same capacity, more floor than the BODACIOUS. The BODACIOUS also lists 3.2 cu ft at about the same height, on about 324 square inches of floor. The Danby takes about 466, by our arithmetic, roughly 44% more. The listings do not explain the difference; insulation thickness for a 0F to 110F rating is one plausible reason, and the extra 15 pounds of weight fits it, but that is inference.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #6,177 overall and #207 in Upright Freezers, the lowest rank on the page. The best-documented freezer here is the least bought. For a garage, a basement without heating or anywhere the room swings in temperature, it is the only listing on this page that answers the question.

Pros

  • Only ambient rating: 0F to 110F
  • 5 years parts and labor, in-home service
  • Manual defrost and 2 quick freeze shelves stated
  • Reversible door hinge; integrated handle
  • Range in °F and °C
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Lowest rank here, #207 in Upright Freezers
  • Warm end 10.4°F, above 0°F
  • No energy or noise figure
  • More floor space than the 3.2 cu ft BODACIOUS
  • 59.3 lb to move
  • No lock

Best for: A garage, unheated basement or workshop where the room temperature swings, and a buyer who values a long warranty.

4. BANGSON 1.1 Cu Ft Upright Mini Freezer for Dorms and Apartments, US-BSR-019 — Best-Ranked 1.1

Small silver upright freezer on a counter with its door slightly open showing a single shelf

The best-selling 1.1 cu ft box, with its own model number and the same Celsius range as two others here.

Key Specifications

Capacity 1.1 cu ft
Stated range -8°F to 7°F (-22°C to -14°C), 5 levels
Defrost Not stated
Reversible door Yes; flush-back design
Lock Not stated
Storage One removable inner shelf
Energy / noise Not stated / Not stated
Garage Not named; no ambient rating
Size and weight 18.5 L x 18 D x 19.1 H in; 28.0 lb
Model US-BSR-019; one year
Seller BANGSON; scarce stock at capture
Best Sellers Rank #112 overall; #3 in Upright Freezers

Why We Recommend It

This is the 1.1 cu ft box shoppers buy most. It ranks #112 overall and #3 in Upright Freezers, second only to the Whynter on the page and just ahead of the EUHOMY. It is also the lightest freezer here at 28.0 pounds, and the listing makes a point of it: “The BANGSON 1. 1 cu. ft. upright freezer controls the weight of each component, making the freezer very easy to use and move.”

Its range is a shared range, rounded. “The temperature may be adjusted from -8°F to 7°F (-22°C to -14°C).” In Celsius that is exactly what the EUHOMY and the 6.0 cu ft Antarctic Star print; -22°C and -14°C convert to -7.6°F and 6.8°F, so the BANGSON has simply rounded outward. Three listings on this page share one dial range across a fivefold spread of capacity. The BANGSON has its own model number, US-BSR-019, and five levels rather than seven, so it is not the same model as the EUHOMY, but on paper the two are near-twins: 1.1 cu ft, about 19 inches tall, about 18 inches square.

Five levels make bigger steps. Across the 15°F span it prints, five levels work out at about 3.75°F per step if the steps are even, by our arithmetic, against about 2.4°F on the seven-level boxes. “Choose your preferred temperature from the rear of the freezer.” A dial on the back keeps the inside clear, and it also means reaching behind the unit to change it, which matters if it sits against a wall or under a shelf.

The basics are covered and the numbers are not. “The reversible door and flush-back design provide for greater positioning versatility.” The leveling legs adjust. “You can remove the inner shelf based on the height of the meal.” There is no energy figure, no noise figure and no defrost type. The listing suits the box to “2–3 families or dorm workplaces”, which we read as two or three people, and suggests it “would look great in a corner or on a countertop”.

What to weigh. It is sold by BANGSON, with stock flagged scarce at capture. The spec table gives a width of 18.0 inches where the bullet gives 18 inches deep; either way the box is about 18 inches square. Warranty is one year, described as “courteous service for a year”. Against the BLACK+DECKER, it gives up the Energy Star label and 0.1 cu ft, and gains a printed range, a reversible door, the better rank and nearly 13 pounds less to carry.

Pros

  • Best-ranked 1.1: #3 in Upright Freezers
  • Lightest here at 28.0 lb
  • Reversible door; flush back
  • Removable shelf
  • Range given in °F and °C
  • Countertop size

Cons

  • No energy, noise or defrost figure
  • Five levels, bigger steps than seven
  • Dial on the rear
  • Scarce stock at capture
  • Warm end 7°F, above 0°F
  • Third-party seller

Best for: A dorm or studio that wants the most-bought 1.1 cu ft box and something light to move.

5. EUHOMY 1.1 Cu Ft Upright Freezer, Reversible Door Mini Freezer, UF001-11 — Amazon-Sold 1.1

Silver mini upright freezer with a built-in handle recess along the door edge

A seven-level 1.1 cu ft box sold by Amazon.com, with its quiet and efficiency claims left unnumbered.

Key Specifications

Capacity 1.1 cu ft
Stated range -7.6°F to 6.8°F, 7 levels
Defrost Not stated
Reversible door Yes
Lock Not stated
Storage Adjustable shelves; count not stated
Energy / noise Not stated / “very quiet”, no figure
Garage Not named; no ambient rating
Size and weight 17.51 W x 18.01 D x 19.51 H in; 30.8 lb
Model UF001-11; 1 year warranty
Seller Amazon.com; scarce stock at capture
Best Sellers Rank #152 overall; #4 in Upright Freezers

Why We Recommend It

This is the 1.1 cu ft box with the finest dial. “The 7-level temperature control system allows you to choose within the temperature range -7.6°F to 6.8°F.” Seven levels across 14.4°F is about 2.4°F per step if the steps are even, by our arithmetic, finer than the BANGSON’s five. The range itself is the BANGSON’s in Celsius, -22°C to -14°C, and the Antarctic Star prints the same Fahrenheit figures at 6.0 cu ft.

Amazon.com is the seller. It ranks #152 overall and #4 in Upright Freezers, one place behind the BANGSON. Stock was flagged scarce at capture. The listing gives the outline “(precise): 17.51″W x 18.01″D x 19.51″H”, while the spec table gives 18.6 inches for width; plan for the larger figure.

Its efficiency and noise claims come without numbers. The listing says the compressor “can help you save electricity, which will reduce your electricity bill” and that the freezer is “very quiet”. Neither claim comes with a figure, and it does not say Energy Star. If quiet matters, the BODACIOUS and Antarctic Star are the only listings here that give a decibel number.

The dial is on the back, by design. “In order to free up more storage space inside the freezer, the Euhomy Team sets the thermostat on the back of the freezer.” That is the same arrangement as the BANGSON, with the same trade: more room inside, a reach behind the box to adjust it. The cold end is 7.6°F below zero and the warm end 6.8°F above it.

The extras are stated in a list. “REVERSIBLE DOOR”, “ADJUSTABLE FEET: keep the machine from being corroded by moisture on the ground”, “ADJUSTABLE SHELVES” and a “BUILT-IN HANDLE”. It is the only 1.1 listing to add a setup note: “You’d better put the small freezer upright for at least 24 hours before using it.” The BODACIOUS gives the same 24-hour rest. Compressor freezers generally want time upright after shipping so the oil settles, and it is worth following on any of these.

What to weigh. Warranty is one year. No defrost type is named; assume manual. Against the BANGSON, it adds two dial positions, adjustable shelves and Amazon.com as the seller, and weighs 2.8 pounds more.

Pros

  • Sold by Amazon.com
  • #4 in Upright Freezers
  • Seven-level dial to -7.6°F
  • Reversible door; adjustable feet
  • Adjustable shelves; built-in handle
  • 24-hour upright setup note stated

Cons

  • “Very quiet” with no dB figure
  • No energy figure
  • Defrost type not stated
  • Dial on the rear
  • Width differs between bullet and spec table
  • Scarce stock at capture

Best for: A 1.1 cu ft buyer who wants the finer seven-level dial and Amazon.com as the seller.

6. Upstreman 3.0 Cu Ft Upright Freezer, Reversible Door, UP30 — Ice Tray Included

Black compact upright freezer with a handle built into the top edge of the door

The Danby’s exact dial range, a garage suggestion without the Danby’s rating, and defrost tools in the box.

Key Specifications

Capacity 3.0 cu ft (title and bullets; no size field)
Stated range -11.2°F to 10.4°F (-24°C to -12°C), 5 speeds
Defrost Not named; defrost tools included
Reversible door Yes
Lock Not stated
Storage Not stated; ice tray included
Energy / noise Not stated / Not stated
Garage Named as a place; no ambient rating
Size and weight 20.3 W x 18.9 D x 31.6 H in; 42.94 lb
Model UP30; one-year warranty
Seller Upstreman Innovation Direct
Best Sellers Rank #300 overall; #13 in Upright Freezers

Why We Recommend It

Its range is identical to the Danby’s. “A 5-speed adjustable thermostat, allowing you to easily set the ideal freezing temperature from -11.2°F to 10.4°F (-24°C to -12°C).” The Danby prints the same two figures in both units. The two are also close in size: 3.0 against 3.2 cu ft, 31.6 against 32.69 inches tall, 20.3 against 20.69 inches wide. The model numbers differ, and the Upstreman lists 42.94 pounds against the Danby’s 59.3, so we treat them as different freezers that share a thermostat specification. The cold end, -11.2°F, is the coldest dial setting on the page, shared with the Danby.

The difference that matters is the garage. The Upstreman says it fits “kitchens, basements, garages, or even under counters”. It gives no ambient range. The Danby, with the same dial, says “Garage Ready” and prints 0F to 110F. If garage use is the reason you are buying, that is the line that separates them.

Five speeds make coarse steps. The span is 21.6°F, by our arithmetic, and five speeds make steps of about 5.4°F if they are even. One notch can move the cabinet several degrees across the 0°F target, and the warm end, 10.4°F, is well above it. Set it near the cold end and check with a thermometer.

The defrost story is told by the accessories. “The enhanced sealing and insulation system minimizes frost buildup, enable efficient cooling while reducing maintenance. The standing upright freezer included ice tray and defrost tools allowing for sustained efficiency.” A freezer that ships with defrost tools is a freezer that will need defrosting, but the listing never uses the words manual defrost. We list it as not named.

The capacity lives in the title, not the spec table. The title and bullets say 3.0 cu ft; the spec table has no size field. The footprint is about 384 square inches by our arithmetic, between the BODACIOUS and the Danby. Under-counter placement for a 31.6 inch tall box depends on your counter height and on clearance for ventilation, which the listing does not specify. The door reverses, the feet level, and the “built-in ergonomic handle provides comfortable access without bending”.

What to weigh. It is sold by Upstreman Innovation Direct and ranks #300 overall and #13 in Upright Freezers, far ahead of the Danby’s #207 in the category. Shelving, energy use and noise are not stated. Warranty is one year. Buy it for an indoor space where the Danby’s rating and five-year warranty are not needed.

Pros

  • Cold end -11.2°F, stated in °F and °C
  • Ice tray and defrost tools included
  • Reversible door; leveling feet
  • Built-in handle
  • Lighter than the Danby at 42.94 lb
  • Far better rank than the Danby

Cons

  • Garage named, no ambient rating
  • Five speeds, coarse steps by our arithmetic
  • Defrost type not named
  • No shelf count, energy or noise figure
  • Capacity missing from spec table
  • Third-party seller

Best for: An indoor kitchen or utility room that wants a 3 cu ft box reaching -11.2°F, with defrosting done by hand.

7. Magic Chef 3.0 Cu Ft Upright Freezer, Stainless Steel, MCUF3S2 — Longest Compressor Cover

Compact upright freezer with a stainless steel door, black cabinet and a recessed handle

Manual defrost and a reversible door stated, five years on the compressor, and two heights that cannot both be right.

Key Specifications

Capacity 3.0 cu ft
Stated range Not stated; adjustable control
Defrost Manual defrost, stated
Reversible door Yes, left or right
Lock Not stated
Storage Wire shelves; count not stated
Energy / noise Not stated / Not stated
Garage Named as a place; no ambient rating
Size 20 x 17 x 24 in L x W x H (bullet); 32.1 H x 22.0 L x 20.3 W in (spec)
Weight 60.6 lb
Warranty 1 Year Parts and Labor, 5 Years Compressor (Part Only)
Best Sellers Rank #2,822 overall; #86 in Upright Freezers

Why We Recommend It

The warranty is the reason to look. “1 Year Parts and Labor, 5 Years Compressor (Part Only).” The compressor is the most expensive part of a freezer to fail, and only two listings here cover it beyond a year: this one, for the part, and the Danby, for five years of parts and labor with in-home service. Part-only means you would pay for the labour to fit it, but it is still more than eight of the ten offer.

Its two heights cannot both be right. The last bullet says “Dimensions of the portable freezer measure 20 x 17 x 24 inches (L x W x H) with a 3 cubic feet capacity.” The spec table says 32.1 inches high, 22.0 long and 20.3 wide. Every other 3.0 to 3.2 cu ft freezer on this page is 31.6 to 32.8 inches tall, so the spec table figure is the more plausible one, but the listing does not say which is current. Measure for 32.1 inches and about 22 by 20 inches of floor.

Defrost and door are stated plainly. “Manual defrost feature helps keep the small freezer clean from frost bite; Adjustable control allows you to select your desired temperature.” That makes it one of four listings to say manual defrost in words. “Customize the door of the upright deep freezer to open on the left or right side.” The adjustable control comes with no range, no number of settings and no cold end, so this is one of four freezers here that never tells you how cold it gets.

It shares the Whynter’s look, not its lock. “Stainless steel door and black cabinet presents a sleek and clean look”, with a “convenient recessed door handle” and a flush back. That is the same styling the Whynter describes. The model numbers, capacities and makers differ (MC Appliance Corporation here), and the Magic Chef does not mention a lock. Inside there are “convenient wire shelves”, number not given.

What to weigh. It is sold by 4Wheel Online, not Amazon.com, with scarce stock at capture, and ranks #2,822 overall and #86 in Upright Freezers. It names “garage, basement, office, and more” but prints no ambient range. At 60.6 pounds it is the heaviest of the 3 cu ft group. Ask for the temperature range and confirm the height before you order.

Pros

  • 5 years compressor cover, part only
  • Manual defrost stated
  • Reversible door, left or right
  • Stainless door, recessed handle, flush back
  • Wire shelves
  • 3.0 cu ft

Cons

  • No temperature range stated
  • Height given as 24 in and 32.1 in
  • Garage named, no ambient rating
  • Third-party seller; scarce stock
  • 60.6 lb, heaviest of the 3 cu ft group
  • No energy or noise figure

Best for: A buyer who wants a stainless 3 cu ft freezer with compressor cover beyond one year, and will confirm the range and height first.

8. BODACIOUS 3.2 Cu Ft Mini Freezer, Compact Upright Small Freezer, BD-80U — Only Energy Figure

Silver compact upright freezer about waist height with its door closed and two front feet

The only kWh figure and one of two decibel figures on the page, on a 1.1-sized footprint stretched to waist height.

Key Specifications

Capacity 3.2 cu ft
Stated range Not stated; reaches -13°F in 12 hours
Defrost Manual defrost, stated
Reversible door Yes
Lock Not stated
Storage 3 shelves, 10 lbs capacity each; transparent baffles
Energy 156.95 kWh/year stated
Noise Under 40dB stated
Garage Not named; no ambient rating
Size and weight 17.5 D x 18.5 W x 32.8 H in; 44 lb
Model Part BD-80U; model field “Upright freezer”
Best Sellers Rank #205 overall; #8 in Upright Freezers

Why We Recommend It

This is the only listing that tells you how much electricity it uses. “Save on utility costs with low energy consumption (156.95 kWh/year …), which is 35% lower than similar models.” That is about 0.43 kWh a day, by our arithmetic. The listing does not say how it was measured, and “35% lower than similar models” names no models. It is not Energy Star; only the BLACK+DECKER says that. Read the figure as a stated mark to check against a plug-in meter, not as a certified rating. It is still more than nine of the ten give you.

It fits nearly three 1.1s of capacity into a 1.1’s footprint. The base is 17.5 by 18.5 inches, about 324 square inches by our arithmetic, within a few square inches of the EUHOMY and the BANGSON. The difference is height: 32.8 inches against about 19. That extra height takes the capacity from 1.1 to 3.2 cu ft, about 91 litres by our arithmetic. The Danby lists the same 3.2 cu ft at almost the same height on about 466 square inches, roughly 44% more floor. One of the two is using its space very differently, and the listings do not say how.

It states a cold point, not a range. “Achieve ultra-low temperatures of -13°F in just 12 hours.” That is the coldest figure on the page, colder than any printed dial end. The listing never gives a warm end or a number of dial positions, so you cannot tell from the page how much of the control sits above 0°F. Plan to set it with a thermometer in the cabinet.

The shelving and noise are specific. “3 shelves (10 lbs capacity each) and transparent baffles to prevent flavor mixing.” It is the only listing that gives a shelf load. Noise is “under 40dB”, one of two decibel figures here with the Antarctic Star’s; neither says at what distance. The defrost line is plain: “The manual defrost design ensures you maintain optimal performance with ease.” A reversible door and “2 adjustable feet” handle placement.

What to weigh. It is sold by HengGe-US and ranks #205 overall and #8 in Upright Freezers. The model field reads only “Upright freezer”; the part number, BD-80U, shares a BD- prefix with the Antarctic Star’s BD-165. Warranty is one year with “lifetime technical support” and 30-day returns. For a narrow, tall space where you want energy and noise on paper, it is the best-documented choice.

Pros

  • 156.95 kWh/year, the only energy figure here
  • Under 40dB stated
  • Manual defrost and reversible door stated
  • 3 shelves rated 10 lbs each
  • 3.2 cu ft on a 1.1-sized footprint
  • Reaches -13°F, stated

Cons

  • No dial range or warm end stated
  • Model field gives no model number
  • “35% lower” claim names no comparison
  • Not Energy Star
  • Third-party seller
  • No lock; no ambient rating

Best for: An apartment kitchen or utility corner with little floor space but room upwards, where energy use and noise should be on paper.

9. Commercial Cool 5.0 Cu Ft Upright Freezer, White, CCUL50W6 — Most Shelves

White upright freezer about chest height with a flat back and recessed door handle

Four full-width shelves and a flat back, and no temperature range at all.

Key Specifications

Capacity 5.0 cu ft
Stated range Not stated
Defrost Not stated
Reversible door Yes
Lock Not stated
Storage 4 full-width steel wire shelves
Energy Not stated; “ETL energy and safety certification”
Noise Not stated
Garage Not named; no ambient rating
Size and weight 47.8 H x 21.5 L x 22.2 W in; weight not stated
Model CCUL50W6 (spec); CCUL50W (title)
Best Sellers Rank #316 overall; #18 in Upright Freezers

Why We Recommend It

This is the most shelving on the page, and no temperature information. “Our freezer has 4 full-width steel wire shelves.” No other listing states more shelves, and wire shelves let cold air move between levels. What the listing does not give is a temperature range, a number of settings, a cold end or a warm end. It is one of four freezers here, with the BLACK+DECKER, the Magic Chef and, in part, the BODACIOUS, that leave the dial undescribed.

The energy line is a certification, not a figure. “With ETL energy and safety certification and environmentally friendly R600a refrigerant, this upright freezer saves money on energy bills month after month.” ETL is a testing-laboratory listing mark. It is not the Energy Star label, which only the BLACK+DECKER claims here, and the listing gives no kWh figure to judge it by.

The copy calls it a chest freezer once. “Our chest freezer 5 cu. ft. has a flat back and recessed door handle, which is ideal for corners and smaller spaces up against the wall.” It is an upright, with a single reversible door, as the next bullet says: “Since the single door reverses to open either way, you can fit this compact freezer anywhere.” The slip is harmless, but it is a reminder of how loosely these listings use their category words. The title gives the model as CCUL50W and the spec table as CCUL50W6; the manufacturer is listed as W Appliance Company.

At 5.0 cu ft it is a different appliance from a 1.1. That is about 142 litres, by our arithmetic, more than four times a countertop box. It stands 47.8 inches tall on a 21.5 by 22.2 inch footprint, about 477 square inches by our arithmetic, the largest base on the page. The listing pitches it for backup: “This deep freezer upright allows you to keep extra food frozen for emergencies.” No weight is given.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #316 overall and #18 in Upright Freezers. Warranty is one year. Against the 6.0 cu ft Antarctic Star, it is a little shorter, adds a fourth stated shelf and drops the temperature range, the manual-defrost statement and the noise figure. Ask for the temperature range before you buy.

Pros

  • 4 full-width wire shelves, the most stated
  • Flat back and recessed handle for corners
  • Reversible door; leveling legs
  • Sold by Amazon.com
  • 5.0 cu ft, about 142 litres by our arithmetic
  • R600a refrigerant stated

Cons

  • No temperature range stated
  • No defrost type stated
  • ETL mark, not Energy Star; no kWh figure
  • No weight or noise figure
  • Copy calls it a chest freezer
  • Title and spec model numbers differ

Best for: A backup freezer in a utility room where shelf space matters more than a printed temperature range.

10. Antarctic Star 6.0 Cu Ft Upright Freezer with 7-Temp Control and Glass Shelves, BD-165 — Largest Here

Tall white upright freezer with the door open showing several glass shelves

The top of the mini range at 6.0 cu ft, on the same dial range as the 1.1 cu ft boxes.

Key Specifications

Capacity 6.0 cu ft
Stated range -7.6°F to 6.8°F, 7 levels
Defrost Manual defrost, stated
Reversible door Yes
Lock Not stated
Storage Removable glass shelves; count not stated
Energy / noise Not stated / below 40 dB
Garage Not named; no ambient rating
Size and weight 50.98 H x 21.85 L x 21.26 W in; 74.96 lb
Footprint 3.23 sq ft, stated
Model BD-165; 1 year
Best Sellers Rank #255 overall; #11 in Upright Freezers

Why We Recommend It

This is where “mini” ends on this page. 6.0 cu ft is about 170 litres, by our arithmetic, more than five times a 1.1 cu ft box, at 50.98 inches tall and 74.96 pounds. The listing still calls it “Space-Saving, Portable Compact Design” and suggests “apartments, dorm rooms, RVs, offices”. It is the largest freezer here, and the top of the 1.1 to 6 cu ft range most buyers mean by mini.

It is the only listing here that states its own footprint, and the figure checks out. “Its compact footprint (3.23 sq.ft) fits seamlessly into tight spaces.” The spec table gives 21.85 by 21.26 inches, which is about 464.5 square inches, or 3.23 square feet, by our arithmetic. That agreement is a small thing, and it is rarer on this page than it should be.

Its dial is the 1.1 cu ft dial. “Seven adjustable settings (1 low to 7 high), providing a wide range from -7.6°F to 6.8°F.” That is exactly the EUHOMY’s range, and the BANGSON’s in Celsius: three of ten listings share it, across a 1.1 and a 6.0. Its model number, BD-165, shares the BD- prefix with the BODACIOUS part number. The listings do not say where any of them are made, so we note the pattern and draw no conclusion from it. The range calls itself wide; at 14.4°F it is in fact one of the narrower ones here, by our arithmetic.

Defrost and shelving are stated. “Featuring a simple rotary temperature knob, manual defrost, and adjustable leveling legs for stability on uneven floors.” It is one of four listings to say manual defrost in words. The title promises “Removable Glass Shelves”, the only glass shelving on the page; glass shelves stop small items falling through and wipe clean, at the cost of blocking some air movement compared with wire. The door reverses. Noise is “below 40 dB”, and the energy claim is a phrase, “lower energy consumption for cost-effective running”, with no figure.

What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #255 overall and #11 in Upright Freezers. Warranty is one year. Against the Commercial Cool, it adds a stated range, manual defrost in words, glass shelves and a noise figure, and gives up the fourth shelf count. If you want the most capacity that still counts as a mini freezer, this is it.

Pros

  • 6.0 cu ft, the largest here
  • Manual defrost stated
  • Removable glass shelves
  • Below 40 dB stated
  • Stated footprint matches its dimensions
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • 50.98 in tall and 74.96 lb
  • Warm end 6.8°F, above 0°F
  • No energy figure
  • Shelf count not stated
  • No lock; no Energy Star
  • Same dial range as the 1.1 boxes

Best for: An apartment that needs the most frozen storage still sold as compact, in a corner about 22 inches square.

Three Extras, Three Different Freezers

Most of what these listings say is the same: a dial, a door, a few shelves. Three features genuinely set a small freezer apart, and on this page each one appears exactly once.

Extra Freezer What the listing says Rank in Upright Freezers
Lock Whynter CUF-210SS “includes a cylinder lock and 2 keys” #2
Energy Star BLACK+DECKER BUFK12W “Energy Star certified and UL Safety certified” #51
Ambient rating Danby DUFM032A3WDB-3 “Garage Ready: Freezer can perform in temperatures from 0F to 110F” #207

You cannot have two of them from this page. The Whynter’s listing names the garage but gives no ambient range and no Energy Star. The BLACK+DECKER says Energy Star and tells you to keep it in a temperature-controlled room. The Danby is rated for the garage and has neither a lock nor Energy Star. If you need two of the three, this list does not have your freezer, and you should ask sellers directly or look at a full-size model; our full-size upright freezer roundup covers the larger class.

Choose by the one you cannot do without. A shared space points to the lock. A freezer that will run for years in a bedroom or office points to the efficiency label. An unheated garage points to the ambient rating, because a freezer outside its designed room temperatures may not hold its own. The rest of the features on this page are close to universal or close to absent, so they rarely decide it.

Mini Runs From 1.1 to 6 Cu Ft

Every listing sells itself as small. The table sets out what that means in cubic feet, in litres, and in the floor space and height each box takes. Litres and footprints are our arithmetic from the stated capacity and dimensions; everything else is as listed.

Freezer Capacity Litres (ours) Height Footprint, sq in (ours) Weight
BANGSON 1.1 cu ft About 31 19.1 in About 333 28.0 lb
EUHOMY 1.1 cu ft About 31 19.51 in About 315 30.8 lb
BLACK+DECKER 1.2 cu ft About 34 About 19.3–19.7 in About 388 40.77 lb
Whynter 2.1 cu ft About 59 27.5 in 350 44.0 lb
Upstreman 3.0 cu ft About 85 31.6 in About 384 42.94 lb
Magic Chef 3.0 cu ft About 85 32.1 in (spec); 24 in (bullet) About 447 (spec) 60.6 lb
BODACIOUS 3.2 cu ft About 91 32.8 in About 324 44 lb
Danby 3.2 cu ft 90 stated 32.69 in About 466 59.3 lb
Commercial Cool 5.0 cu ft About 142 47.8 in About 477 Not stated
Antarctic Star 6.0 cu ft About 170 50.98 in About 465 74.96 lb

Four size classes hide under one word. The 1.1 and 1.2 cu ft boxes are countertop height, about 19 to 20 inches. The Whynter at 2.1 is a class of one, at 27.5 inches. The 3.0 to 3.2 group stands about 32 to 33 inches, roughly worktop height. The 5.0 and 6.0 reach about 48 to 51 inches. The largest holds more than five times the smallest. Asking for the best mini freezer without a capacity in mind will get you any of them.

Capacity is mostly bought with height. The BODACIOUS stands on about the same floor as the BANGSON and EUHOMY, by our arithmetic, and holds nearly three times as much, by being about 14 inches taller. If your space is a narrow corner, the useful question is how tall you can go.

But the same capacity can take very different floor space. The BODACIOUS and the Danby both list 3.2 cu ft at about 32.7 to 32.8 inches tall. The BODACIOUS needs about 324 square inches of floor and weighs 44 pounds; the Danby needs about 466 and weighs 59.3. The Magic Chef, at 3.0 cu ft, also weighs about 60 pounds. Heavier, wider boxes at the same capacity suggest thicker walls, which would fit the Danby’s wide ambient rating, but none of the listings states wall or insulation thickness.

A tidy garage interior with metal shelving units along a plain wall
Four listings name the garage; only one prints the room temperatures it can run in.

Every Stated Dial Crosses 0°F

0°F, about -18°C, is the standard freezer target. Six listings give a temperature range, one gives a single cold figure, and three give nothing. Spans and steps are our arithmetic, and the step figure assumes the positions are evenly spaced, which no listing confirms.

Freezer Stated range Positions Span (ours) Step if even (ours) Warm end vs 0°F
Whynter -10°F to 2°F Not stated 12°F — 2°F above
EUHOMY -7.6°F to 6.8°F 7 14.4°F About 2.4°F 6.8°F above
Antarctic Star -7.6°F to 6.8°F 7 14.4°F About 2.4°F 6.8°F above
BANGSON -8°F to 7°F 5 15°F About 3.75°F 7°F above
Upstreman -11.2°F to 10.4°F 5 21.6°F About 5.4°F 10.4°F above
Danby -11.2°F to 10.4°F Not stated 21.6°F — 10.4°F above
BODACIOUS Reaches -13°F Not stated — — Not stated
BLACK+DECKER Not stated Not stated — — Not stated
Magic Chef Not stated Not stated — — Not stated
Commercial Cool Not stated Not stated — — Not stated

All six ranges reach below 0°F, and all six also reach above it. That is how freezer thermostats are usually built: a range around the target, so the unit can be trimmed for its room and its load. It is not a fault. But it means that on every one of these freezers there are settings that will hold food warmer than the standard target, and none has a digital readout to warn you.

The Whynter has the least dial on the warm side. Its warmest setting is 2°F. On the 1.1 cu ft boxes and the Antarctic Star the warm end is 6.8°F or 7°F; on the Upstreman and the Danby 10.4°F. A narrow range near zero is the safer shape for a buyer who sets the dial once and forgets it.

Two shared ranges cover five freezers. The EUHOMY and Antarctic Star print -7.6°F to 6.8°F, and the BANGSON prints the same range in Celsius, -22°C to -14°C, rounded to -8°F and 7°F. The Upstreman and Danby both print -24°C to -12°C. Shared ranges across different brands and sizes suggest common thermostat parts; the listings do not say.

Three freezers never say how cold they get. The BLACK+DECKER, the Magic Chef and the Commercial Cool each mention an adjustable control and give no figures. The BODACIOUS gives only its cold point. For those four especially, a thermometer is the only way to find 0°F.

The only way to know is to measure. A stated range is what the control is designed to aim at, not what your cabinet holds with the door opening and a warm room around it. Put a thermometer in the middle of the cabinet, set the dial, wait a day, and adjust. Our freezer thermometer guide compares the options.

The Feature Count

Here is every feature we counted, with the number of listings that state it in words. A feature a listing does not mention is counted as not stated, even where the hardware may well have it.

Feature Listings that state it Which
Temperature range 6 of 10 Whynter, BANGSON, EUHOMY, Upstreman, Danby, Antarctic Star
Reversible door 8 of 10 All but Whynter and BLACK+DECKER
Manual defrost, in words 4 of 10 Magic Chef, BODACIOUS, Danby, Antarctic Star
Frost-free or auto defrost 0 of 10 None
Lock 1 of 10 Whynter
Shelf count 5 of 10 Whynter 1, BLACK+DECKER 1, Danby 2, BODACIOUS 3, Commercial Cool 4
Energy Star 1 of 10 BLACK+DECKER
Energy figure 1 of 10 BODACIOUS, 156.95 kWh/year
Decibel figure 2 of 10 BODACIOUS under 40dB; Antarctic Star below 40 dB
Ambient or garage rating 1 of 10 Danby, 0F to 110F
Garage named, no rating 3 of 10 Whynter, Upstreman, Magic Chef
Warranty beyond one year 2 of 10 Danby 5 years parts and labor; Magic Chef 5 years compressor, part only

The ones and zeros are the finding. No listing says frost-free. One says Energy Star, one gives a kWh figure, one prints an ambient range, one has a lock, and they are four different freezers. The features most often used to separate a well-specified freezer from a basic one are spread thin across this page, never stacked.

Defrost is the quiet one. Four listings say manual defrost. The Upstreman ships defrost tools. The other five say nothing. In a small freezer with no frost-free claim, assume manual defrost: switch it off, empty it, let the ice melt, dry it and restart, typically when frost builds to about a quarter of an inch. Plan where the food goes while that happens, and wrap it well in the meantime; our vacuum sealer bags guide covers airtight packing that cuts down on frost on the food itself.

Garage is usually a word, not a rating. Four listings suggest the garage, and only the Danby gives the room temperatures it is built to work in. Many freezers are designed for indoor rooms, and in a garage that gets very cold in winter or very hot in summer, a freezer’s thermostat and compressor can be pushed outside the conditions they were designed for. The BLACK+DECKER goes the other way and specifies a temperature-controlled room. If yours is going in an unheated space, buy the rated one or ask for the range.

Efficiency is one label and one number, on different freezers. The BLACK+DECKER is Energy Star certified with no kWh figure printed. The BODACIOUS prints 156.95 kWh a year with no label. Neither can be compared with the other from the listings alone. The Energy Star label at least rests on a published standard.

A wire basket of lemons and tomatoes
None of the ten claims frost-free; plan for manual defrosting on all of them.

Shared Numbers Across Different Brands

Model and part numbers are the most reliable way to tell when two listings sell the same box, and printed ranges are the next clue. We set all ten side by side. No two of these ten share a model number.

Freezer Model / part Capacity Range Outline Overlap
Upstreman UP30 3.0 cu ft -24°C to -12°C, 5 speeds 20.3 x 18.9 x 31.6 in, 42.94 lb Same range as Danby
Danby DUFM032A3WDB-3 3.2 cu ft -24°C to -12°C 20.69 x 22.5 x 32.69 in, 59.3 lb Same range as Upstreman
BANGSON US-BSR-019 1.1 cu ft -22°C to -14°C, 5 levels 18.5 x 18 x 19.1 in Same range as EUHOMY, Antarctic Star
EUHOMY UF001-11 1.1 cu ft -7.6°F to 6.8°F, 7 levels 17.51 x 18.01 x 19.51 in Same range as BANGSON, Antarctic Star
Antarctic Star BD-165 6.0 cu ft -7.6°F to 6.8°F, 7 levels 21.26 x 21.85 x 50.98 in Same range as the 1.1s; BD- prefix
BODACIOUS BD-80U 3.2 cu ft Reaches -13°F 18.5 x 17.5 x 32.8 in, 44 lb BD- prefix; same capacity as Danby
Whynter CUF-210SS 2.1 cu ft -10°F to 2°F 17.5 x 20 x 27.5 in Same styling as Magic Chef
Magic Chef MCUF3S2 3.0 cu ft Not stated 20.3 x 22.0 x 32.1 in (spec) Same styling as Whynter
BLACK+DECKER BUFK12W 1.2 cu ft Not stated 19.69 x 19.29 x 19.72 in None
Commercial Cool CCUL50W6 / CCUL50W 5.0 cu ft Not stated 22.2 x 21.5 x 47.8 in None

The Upstreman and the Danby are the closest pair. Identical ranges to the decimal in both units, capacities 0.2 cu ft apart, heights about an inch apart, widths under half an inch apart. They are not the same freezer on paper: the Danby is about 16 pounds heavier, deeper, rated for 0F to 110F and covered for five years in-home, and the Upstreman ships defrost tools and an ice tray. If you like the Upstreman’s dial but need garage use, the Danby is the version that says so.

A shared dial runs from 1.1 to 6.0 cu ft. The BANGSON prints -22°C to -14°C under its own model number, the EUHOMY and the Antarctic Star print the same range in Fahrenheit. A common thermostat across a 1.1 and a 6.0 is plausible; we flag the overlap and draw no further conclusion.

The look-alikes stop at the surface. The Whynter and the Magic Chef both describe a stainless steel door, a black cabinet and a recessed handle, but they differ in capacity, maker and features; only the Whynter has a lock. The BD- prefix on the BODACIOUS and Antarctic Star is a naming pattern, not evidence of a shared design.

Popularity Runs Opposite to the Paperwork

Star ratings were not captured for this roundup, so the only popularity measure here is Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank as returned on 5 October 2026. All ten rank in Upright Freezers, so their category ranks are directly comparable. Ranks move constantly; read the order, not the precise numbers.

Freezer Overall rank Upright Freezers rank Capacity
Whynter #46 #2 2.1 cu ft
BANGSON #112 #3 1.1 cu ft
EUHOMY #152 #4 1.1 cu ft
BODACIOUS #205 #8 3.2 cu ft
Antarctic Star #255 #11 6.0 cu ft
Upstreman #300 #13 3.0 cu ft
Commercial Cool #316 #18 5.0 cu ft
BLACK+DECKER #1,690 #51 1.2 cu ft
Magic Chef #2,822 #86 3.0 cu ft
Danby #6,177 #207 3.2 cu ft

The best-documented freezers sell least. The Energy Star BLACK+DECKER, the Magic Chef with five years on its compressor and the garage-rated Danby with five years in-home are the three lowest ranks on the page. The top of the table is the Whynter and the two 1.1 cu ft boxes. The exception is the Whynter itself: its lock is the one documented extra that sits at the top of the ranks.

What the Step Up in Size Actually Buys

The countertop boxes — BANGSON, EUHOMY, BLACK+DECKER. About 31 to 34 litres by our arithmetic, roughly 19 to 20 inches tall. The 1.1s buy a reversible door and a rear dial reaching -7.6°F or -8°F at about 28 to 31 pounds; the BLACK+DECKER buys the page’s only Energy Star label at 40.77 pounds, with no printed range. Enough for ice cream, a few ready meals and ice packs; not enough for a week’s shop.

The 2.1 cu ft Whynter. Nearly double the 1.1 capacity and 8 inches taller. It buys the only lock on the page and the narrowest dial, -10°F to 2°F, and gives up the stated reversible door and any energy or noise figure.

The 3.0 to 3.2 cu ft group — Upstreman, Magic Chef, BODACIOUS, Danby. About 85 to 91 litres by our arithmetic, roughly worktop height. This step buys nearly three times a 1.1’s capacity and colder stated bottom ends, -11.2°F to -13°F. Within it, the BODACIOUS buys the smallest footprint and the energy and noise figures; the Danby buys the ambient rating and five years in-home; the Magic Chef buys compressor cover; the Upstreman buys defrost tools and the better rank.

The 5.0 and 6.0 cu ft group — Commercial Cool, Antarctic Star. About 142 to 170 litres, about 48 to 51 inches tall, on bases about 22 inches square. This step buys real backup storage and shelving: four wire shelves on the Commercial Cool, glass shelves and manual defrost in words on the Antarctic Star. The Commercial Cool gives no temperature range at all.

Every stated dial here also reaches above 0°F; a thermometer sets it, not the number on the knob.

What to Check Before You Buy

Pick a Capacity, Not a Label

“Mini” on this page runs from 1.1 to 6.0 cu ft. Decide how much you need to freeze, then filter by cubic feet. As a rough guide, a 1.1 cu ft box holds about 31 litres, a 3 cu ft box about 85 and a 6 cu ft box about 170, by our arithmetic.

Decide Which Extra You Cannot Do Without

Lock, Energy Star and an ambient rating each appear on one freezer here, and never together. Work out which one your space needs, the lock for shared rooms, the label for long indoor running, the rating for a garage, and start there.

Measure Height as Well as Floor Space

The BODACIOUS fits 3.2 cu ft on about a 1.1’s footprint by being 14 inches taller. Measure the height you have, including any shelf or counter above, and leave space round the back and sides for the condenser to shed heat; most listings do not state clearances, so ask. Where a listing gives two heights, as the Magic Chef does, plan for the larger.

Check the Range Against 0°F

Every stated range here crosses 0°F. Look at the warm end: 2°F on the Whynter, 6.8°F to 10.4°F on the rest. Three listings give no range at all. Whatever you buy, set it with a thermometer in the cabinet rather than by the dial alone.

Assume Manual Defrost Unless It Says Otherwise

No listing here claims frost-free or automatic defrost. Four say manual defrost; the rest are silent. Budget a defrost a few times a year, with somewhere to put the food, and keep an eye on the door seal; a poor seal is the usual reason frost builds fast.

Ask for the Ambient Range if It Is Going in a Garage

Four listings name the garage; only the Danby prints the room temperatures it is built to run in, 0F to 110F. In an unheated garage, that range is what decides whether the freezer keeps working through winter and summer. Ask the seller of any other model, and treat no answer as a no.

Read the Warranty Line

Eight of ten give one year. The Danby gives five years parts and labor with in-home service; the Magic Chef gives five years on the compressor, part only. For a freezer you expect to run for years, that line is worth as much as any feature on the box.

Common Mistakes

  • Expecting a lock, a label and a garage rating on one box. On this page each appears once, on three different freezers.
  • Reading “garage” as a rating. Four listings name the garage; only the Danby prints a range, 0F to 110F.
  • Setting the dial by eye. Every stated range here also reaches above 0°F, up to 10.4°F; check with a thermometer.
  • Expecting frost-free. None of the ten claims it; four say manual defrost and five say nothing.
  • Buying by the word “mini”. It covers 1.1 to 6.0 cu ft here, more than fivefold; filter by cubic feet.
  • Measuring only the floor. The 3.2 cu ft BODACIOUS stands on a 1.1’s footprint but is 32.8 inches tall.
  • Trusting the first height you read. The Magic Chef gives 24 inches in a bullet and 32.1 in its spec table.
  • Reading ETL as Energy Star. The Commercial Cool’s ETL mark is a safety listing; only the BLACK+DECKER says Energy Star.

Who Should Buy Which

Buy the Whynter CUF-210SS if you need a lock or want the dial kept near 0°F. The only lock on the page, the narrowest range, -10°F to 2°F, 2.1 cu ft and the best rank, sold by Amazon.com. Accept that the listing does not mention a reversible door, a defrost type, energy, noise or an ambient range.

Buy the BLACK+DECKER BUFK12W if you want the smallest freezer with an efficiency label. Energy Star certified, 1.2 cu ft, sold by Amazon.com. Accept no printed range, no defrost statement and a listing that keeps it to temperature-controlled rooms.

Buy the Danby if it is going in a garage. The only ambient rating here, 0F to 110F, manual defrost, two shelves, a reversible hinge and five years parts and labor in-home. Accept the lowest rank on the page and a 10.4°F warm end.

Buy the BANGSON if you want the most-bought 1.1 cu ft box. #3 in Upright Freezers, a reversible door, 28.0 pounds. Accept no energy, noise or defrost figures and a five-level rear dial.

Buy the EUHOMY if you want a 1.1 with a finer dial from Amazon.com. Seven levels to -7.6°F, adjustable shelves and a 24-hour setup note. Accept that its quiet and efficiency claims carry no numbers.

Buy the Upstreman if you want the Danby’s dial indoors. -11.2°F to 10.4°F, defrost tools and an ice tray, a far better rank. Accept a coarse five-speed dial and no ambient rating.

Buy the Magic Chef if compressor cover matters. Five years on the compressor, part only, manual defrost and a reversible door. Accept no printed range and two conflicting heights.

Buy the BODACIOUS if your space is narrow but tall. 3.2 cu ft on a 1.1’s footprint, with manual defrost, three rated shelves, 156.95 kWh a year and under 40dB stated. Accept a cold point, -13°F, rather than a dial range.

Buy the Commercial Cool if shelves matter more than a printed range. Four full-width wire shelves, 5.0 cu ft, a flat back. Accept that it states no temperature range, defrost type, energy figure or weight.

Buy the Antarctic Star if you want the most a mini freezer can hold. 6.0 cu ft, manual defrost and glass shelves stated, below 40 dB. Accept 50.98 inches of height and 74.96 pounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best mini freezer?

For most buyers, the Whynter CUF-210SS. At 2.1 cu ft it sits between the countertop boxes and the waist-height units, it is the only freezer of the ten with a lock, a cylinder lock with two keys, and its stated range, -10 to 2 degrees F, is the narrowest on the page and the closest to the 0 degree F standard target at its warm end. It also holds the best rank here, #2 in Upright Freezers, and is sold by Amazon.com. Its listing does not mention a reversible door, a defrost type, energy use, noise or an ambient range. If the freezer is going in a garage, the Danby is the only listing that prints an ambient rating, 0F to 110F. If you want the smallest box with an efficiency label, the BLACK+DECKER 1.2 cu ft is the only one that says Energy Star.

What is the best mini upright freezer?

All ten freezers here are uprights, and Amazon ranks every one in Upright Freezers. The Whynter CUF-210SS leads on rank and is the only one with a lock. For the smallest size, the BANGSON and EUHOMY at 1.1 cu ft and the BLACK+DECKER at 1.2 cu ft are about 19 to 20 inches tall and fit on a counter; the BLACK+DECKER is the only Energy Star model. For a taller unit, four freezers sit at 3.0 to 3.2 cu ft and about 32 to 33 inches: the BODACIOUS documents energy and noise, the Danby is garage rated, the Magic Chef carries five years on the compressor and the Upstreman ranks best of the four. The Antarctic Star at 6.0 cu ft is the largest. Whichever you choose, check its temperature range against 0 degrees F and set it with a thermometer.

What is the best compact freezer?

Compact is used as loosely as mini on these listings, so start with capacity and footprint. If compact means countertop, the 1.1 and 1.2 cu ft boxes are the answer; the BANGSON is the most bought and the lightest at 28.0 pounds, and the BLACK+DECKER is the only Energy Star model. If compact means a small footprint, the BODACIOUS gives 3.2 cu ft on about 324 square inches of floor by our arithmetic, almost the same as a 1.1, by standing 32.8 inches tall; it also states manual defrost, three shelves rated 10 lbs each, 156.95 kWh a year and under 40dB. The Danby lists the same 3.2 cu ft on about 466 square inches. If compact means the most you can fit in a corner about 22 inches square, the Antarctic Star holds 6.0 cu ft. None of these says frost-free.

What is the best small freezer for an apartment?

It depends on where in the apartment it goes. In a bedroom or open-plan room, noise matters, and only two listings give a figure: the BODACIOUS, under 40dB, and the Antarctic Star, below 40 dB. Neither says at what distance it was measured. If the freezer will run for years indoors, the BLACK+DECKER is the only Energy Star model here, and its listing specifically suits it to temperature-controlled rooms. If floor space is tight, look up rather than out: the BODACIOUS fits 3.2 cu ft on about the same footprint as the 1.1 cu ft boxes. If you share the apartment, the Whynter is the only freezer with a lock. Leave space for air at the back and sides; most listings do not state clearances, and a cramped freezer works harder.

What is the best apartment size freezer?

On this page, apartment size runs from the 1.1 cu ft countertop boxes up to 6.0 cu ft. For one or two people topping up a fridge’s freezer drawer, a 1.1 or 1.2 cu ft box, about 31 to 34 litres by our arithmetic, holds ice cream, ice packs and a few ready meals; the BANGSON, EUHOMY and BLACK+DECKER are the choices. For batch cooking or bulk buying, a 3.0 to 3.2 cu ft unit, about 85 to 91 litres by our arithmetic, nearly triples that at about worktop height; the BODACIOUS takes the least floor. For a full backup freezer, the 6.0 cu ft Antarctic Star is the largest here at about 51 inches tall, and the 5.0 cu ft Commercial Cool has the most shelves. Measure the height you have before you choose.

Can a mini freezer go in a garage?

Only one listing here says so with a specification. The Danby is described as Garage Ready and able to perform in temperatures from 0F to 110F. Three others, the Whynter, Upstreman and Magic Chef, name the garage as a place to put the freezer but print no ambient range, and the BLACK+DECKER asks for a temperature-controlled room. Many freezers are designed for indoor room temperatures, and very cold or very hot garages can push a thermostat and compressor outside the conditions they were designed for, so the freezer may not hold its temperature. If your garage stays within normal indoor temperatures all year, a non-rated freezer may be fine. If it freezes in winter or bakes in summer, buy the rated one or ask the seller for the range, and put a thermometer inside the cabinet once it is running.

Do mini freezers need defrosting?

Almost certainly, for these ten. None claims frost-free or automatic defrost. Four say manual defrost in words: the Magic Chef, BODACIOUS, Danby and Antarctic Star. The Upstreman ships with defrost tools, which says the same thing without the words. The other five do not name a defrost type. In practice, plan to defrost when frost builds to about a quarter of an inch, or a few times a year: switch off, move the food to a cool box, let the ice melt with the door open and a towel underneath, dry the cabinet and restart. Keeping the door shut, the seal clean and food well wrapped all slow frost build-up. Frost on the walls also steals capacity, which matters most in a 1.1 cu ft box, where a thick layer can take a noticeable share of the space.

How cold does a mini freezer get, and is 0 degrees F enough?

0 degrees F, about -18 degrees C, is the standard freezer target. Every one of the six listings that print a range can reach below it: the coldest dial ends are -11.2 degrees F on the Upstreman and Danby, -10 on the Whynter, -8 on the BANGSON and -7.6 on the EUHOMY and Antarctic Star. The BODACIOUS says it reaches -13 degrees F in 12 hours. The BLACK+DECKER, Magic Chef and Commercial Cool give no range. Every printed range also reaches above 0 degrees F at its warm end, from 2 degrees F on the Whynter to 10.4 degrees F on the Upstreman and Danby, so the setting matters. A dial number is not a temperature. Set the control, wait a day with a thermometer in the middle of the cabinet, and adjust until it reads 0 degrees F or a little below.

Final Verdict

Best OverallWhynter 2.1 Cu Ft Upright Freezer, CUF-210SS

The only lock here, the narrowest dial at -10°F to 2°F, and #2 in Upright Freezers, sold by Amazon.com.

Best SmallBLACK+DECKER 1.2 Cu Ft Compact Upright Freezer, BUFK12W

The only Energy Star certified freezer on the page, at countertop size, sold by Amazon.com.

Best for GaragesDanby 3.2 Cu Ft Upright Freezer, DUFM032A3WDB-3

The only stated ambient rating, 0F to 110F, with manual defrost and 5 years parts and labor in-home.

Ten small freezers, 1.1 to 6.0 cu ft, and the three extras that matter each live on a different one. The Whynter has the lock. The BLACK+DECKER has Energy Star. The Danby has the ambient rating that makes a garage freezer a garage freezer. No freezer on the page has two of the three.

The rest of the feature lists are thin. No frost-free claim; four say manual defrost. One kWh figure, two decibel figures, three listings with no temperature range at all. Every printed range reaches below 0°F and also above it, with warm ends from 2°F to 10.4°F. Two pairs of brands share identical dial ranges, and the best-documented freezers hold the lowest ranks.

So buy a mini freezer by the extra you need, then by capacity and height. Decide whether the lock, the label or the garage rating is the one you cannot do without. Then pick a capacity in cubic feet, measure the height you have, assume manual defrost, check the warm end of the range, and set the freezer with a thermometer, not by the dial.

If you buy one freezer from this page, make it the Whynter CUF-210SS: 2.1 cu ft, the only lock on the page, the narrowest stated range at -10°F to 2°F, and the best rank, sold by Amazon.com. If it is going in a garage, buy the Danby instead; if you want the smallest box with an efficiency label, the BLACK+DECKER is the one.
