Nobody Admits a Stamped Blade Among Ten Best Microplane Zesters

Microplane is a brand, and also the word people type for any long, narrow rasp. Of the ten we captured, one is an actual Microplane: the Premium Classic, model 46901. What made the brand’s name is how the teeth are cut. Its listing says “photo-etched technology”, which dissolves the steel away chemically and leaves a sharp, raised edge. The cheaper way is stamping, punching the holes out with a press, and a stamped hole tends to tear more than it slices.

One listing says photo-etched, and it is the Microplane. Two more, the OXO Good Grips and one Rainspire, say “etched”. Not one listing says stamped. The other seven, including the best seller, say “razor-sharp”, which is an adjective, not a process. Across eight checks per listing, the ten give 33 of 80 possible answers, by our count.

This guide sets out what each of the ten actually states, and which rasp to buy for zest, for cheese and for a drawer without a blade guard. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup; popularity is Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank only.

Best Sellers Ranks and specifications are taken from each manufacturer’s Amazon listing as displayed on 5 October 2026 through a United States connection, and may change. Every entry is as stated by the listing. “Not stated” means the listing’s title, bullets and spec table do not say. The Microplane Premium’s 18/8 comes from its spec table’s Size field, not its bullets, which say “surgical grade stainless steel”. The Premium’s “non-scratch end tabs” protect worktops; the listing does not call them non-slip. Cambom’s foot entry is its “anti-skid bars” at the bottom of the blade. The Rainspire with a channel knife is a short hole-type citrus zester, not a long rasp. Ranks are overall Best Sellers Ranks returned on 5 October 2026; category ranks, in Zesters or Graters, are in the detail cards. One listing was sold by Amazon.com at capture, the OXO; the rest by their brands or other sellers, with the GEROSSI sold by DELFORI and the Anddgrous by ZLGJ. The OIM Omiiomio’s first four bullets are copied word for word from the Deiss listing. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for any product here.

How We Chose These Ten

We researched current listings, compared manufacturer specifications and documentation, and read every title, bullet and spec field for what it says about the blade, the steel and what comes in the box. We did not carry out hands-on testing, and nothing below is presented as measured performance data. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup. We used Amazon Best Sellers Rank, buy-box stock and listing specifications instead, and nothing on this page describes or implies how owners have scored these zesters.

  • Handheld zesters and rasps only — every product is a hand tool sold for zesting citrus and grating hard cheese, garlic, ginger or nutmeg. Box graters, rotary graters and electric graters were not in the running. One short strip zester with a channel knife is included because Amazon ranks it in Zesters and shoppers meet it in the same search.
  • Brand checked against the word — “Microplane” is a brand name used loosely for the whole category. We recorded the brand and manufacturer field on every listing. One of the ten is a Microplane product; the rest are not, and we say so on each card.
  • Eight questions, answered from the listing — blade process (photo-etched, etched, stamped or silent), steel grade, the blade’s own length and width, cover or guard included, non-slip foot, handle, dishwasher claim and warranty. A question counts as answered only if the listing answers it in words or in a spec field.
  • Adjectives logged as adjectives — “razor-sharp”, “ultra sharp”, “professional” and “commercial-grade” are recorded, quoted and not counted as a process or a grade.
  • Model numbers compared — we lined up every model and part number and compared bullet text, to catch the same tool or the same copy listed under two names, and to flag model fields that hold a description instead of a number.
  • Implausible fields left out — where a listed weight or dimension cannot describe the tool, we say so and do not lean on it. Where two fields on one listing disagree, we report both. Unit conversions are labelled as our arithmetic.
  • Popularity from Best Sellers Rank only — ranks are quoted exactly as returned on 5 October 2026, overall and in the category Amazon assigned. Amazon files seven of these in Zesters and three in Graters, so category ranks only compare within each group.
  • Verified stock and seller — each product was the buy-box offer and in stock on amazon.com on 5 October 2026.

The Ten Zesters in Detail

1. Microplane Premium Classic Series Parmesan Grater and Lemon Zester (46901) — Best Overall

Long narrow grey-handled rasp grater with a fine perforated stainless steel blade

The genuine article: the only Microplane on the page, with the process that made the name printed in its bullets.

Key Specifications

Brand Microplane (manufacturer: Microplane)
Blade process Photo-etched, made in the USA, stated
Steel “Surgical grade stainless steel”; Size field reads 18/8
Blade size Not stated
Overall size 12.0 x 1.33 x 1.0 in
Cover / guard Not stated
Foot “Non-scratch end tabs”; non-slip not stated
Handle Not described
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe, stated
Warranty Not stated
Model / part 46901 / 46901E
Best Sellers Rank #383 overall; #2 in Zesters

Why We Recommend It

This is a Microplane, made by Microplane and sold by Microplane. The brand, manufacturer and seller fields all agree, which is not true of every listing on this page. If the search that brought you here was literal, and you want the tool the word was coined for, this is the only listing of the ten that qualifies. The Premium Classic ranks #383 overall and #2 in Zesters, second only to the Deiss among the zesters.

It states the process the whole category is named after. “ULTRA SHARP MADE IN THE USA BLADES: Microplate uses photo-etched technology to make ultra sharp grating blades right here in America!” The typo, “Microplate”, is in the listing. The claim is the important part. Photo-etching cuts the tooth pattern chemically rather than punching it, which is why a good etched rasp shaves through rind and leaves the pith. It is the only listing on the page that names photo-etching. The zest bullet backs it with a function claim: the blade has “a specific tooth set that takes the flavorful rind directly off the citrus fruit, while leaving behind the bitter white pith.”

The steel description pulls two ways. The bullets say “surgical grade stainless steel” and add that “True stainless steel is magnetic, so this item can be hung on your magnetic knife strip.” The spec table’s Size field reads 18/8. As general context, 18/8 steel, the 304 family, is usually non-magnetic or only weakly magnetic, while the magnetic stainless grades used for blades belong to other families. The listing does not resolve which it is. What it does commit to is rust-free steel that holds its edge, and a blade that will cling to a knife strip.

The box is bare. No cover or blade guard is mentioned, and six of the nine non-Microplane listings include one. The handle is not described at all, the only listing of ten where that is true. The ends carry “Non-scratch end tabs” that “help protect counter tops”, which is about your worktop, not about grip; the listing does not say they stop the rasp sliding. If you store it loose in a drawer, plan for a guard of your own or a knife strip, as the listing suggests.

What to weigh. It is the best-ranked rasp that states how its teeth are made, and the only one that adds made in the USA and a dishwasher claim to that. Overall it is 12.0 inches long and 1.33 inches wide, close to the Anddgrous’s 12.3 inches and about three inches shorter than the 15-inch generic rasps. No warranty is stated. It answers three of our eight questions, and the three it answers are the ones that matter most for the cut.

Pros

  • The only genuine Microplane: brand, maker and seller agree
  • Only photo-etched claim here; made in the USA
  • #2 in Zesters, #383 overall
  • Dishwasher safe, stated
  • Magnetic claim: hangs on a knife strip
  • Non-scratch end tabs protect worktops

Cons

  • No cover or guard stated
  • Handle not described at all
  • Steel: “surgical grade” in bullets, 18/8 in Size field
  • No blade size stated
  • No warranty stated
  • End tabs not described as non-slip

Best for: Anyone who wants the real Microplane and its photo-etched cut, and will store it on a strip or with a guard of their own.

2. OXO Good Grips Etched Zester & Grater (11215400) — Best Guarded Rasp

Green soft-handled rasp zester with a fine etched blade and a clear blade cover

An etched blade from a known kitchen brand, and the most complete set of practical extras among the long rasps.

Key Specifications

Brand OXO (manufacturer: OXO); not a Microplane
Blade process “Etched surface”, stated
Steel Not stated
Blade size Not stated
Size fields 14.9 in (height field) x 4.6 in (width field) x 1.0 in (length field)
Cover / guard Blade cover included
Foot Non-slip foot, stated
Handle Soft, slip-free grip; hanging hole
Dishwasher Not stated
Warranty Not stated
Model / part 11215400 / 11215400UK
Best Sellers Rank #724 overall; #3 in Graters

Why We Recommend It

OXO says etched, and it says it first. The opening bullet: “Sharp and durable etched surface lets you easily grate and zest ingredients for your favorite recipes”. The title repeats it: “Etched Zester & Grater”. It does not say photo-etched, and it does not say where the blade is made, but of the nine non-Microplanes it is one of only two that name a process at all. For a rasp, that is the claim that matters most, and OXO makes it in the product name.

It is the guarded, grippy option. Two bullets do the work the Microplane leaves out: “Non-slip foot keeps it firmly in place while grating”, and “Includes a blade cover”. Only three listings mention a foot or anti-skid feature, and only two pair a foot with an etched blade and a cover: this one and the Rainspire 304 rasp. The foot matters if you grate Parmesan by resting the tip on a board and drawing the cheese down, which is steadier than grating in mid-air. The cover matters in a drawer, where a bare rasp catches knuckles.

The handle is described in plain terms. “Comfortable soft handle provides a secure and slip-free grip”, with a hole for hanging and a “Bright green color” so you can find it in a drawer. It is sold by Amazon.com, the only listing here with that seller, and ranks #724 overall and #3 in Graters, the best category rank of the three listings Amazon files as graters.

Two blanks and an odd size field. The listing gives no steel grade, only stainless by implication, and makes no dishwasher claim. Its dimension fields are assigned oddly: 14.9 inches sits in the height field and 4.6 inches in the width field. 14.9 inches is a plausible overall length for a rasp of this type, close to the 15-inch generics. 4.6 inches is wider than any other rasp listed here and the listing does not say what it measures; it may include the cover, the foot or the packaging. The part number ends in UK, which suggests a regional variant of model 11215400; the listing does not explain it.

What to weigh. If you want an etched blade, a cover and a foot from a brand you can call, this is the listing that delivers all three. It answers four of our eight questions. Against the Microplane Premium, you trade a stated photo-etched, made-in-USA blade and a dishwasher claim for a guard and a foot. Against the Rainspire 304 rasp, which copies its feature list point for point, you trade a stated steel grade and dishwasher claim for OXO’s name and a far better rank.

Pros

  • Etched surface stated, in the title
  • Blade cover included
  • Non-slip foot for grating against a board
  • Soft, slip-free handle with hanging hole
  • Sold by Amazon.com
  • #3 in Graters

Cons

  • Not a Microplane; photo-etched not stated
  • No steel grade stated
  • Dishwasher not stated
  • No warranty stated
  • 4.6 in width field unexplained
  • No blade size stated

Best for: A cook who grates against a board and keeps tools in a drawer, and wants a known brand with a cover and a foot.

3. Cambom Lemon Zester Grater Three-Piece Set — Best Set

Three black-handled flat graters with fine, coarse and extra coarse stainless steel blades side by side

Three blades, three covers, one brush, and the only listing on the page that tells you how big the blades are.

Key Specifications

Brand Cambom (manufacturer: Cambom); not a Microplane
Pieces Fine, coarse and extra coarse graters plus cleaning brush
Blade process Not stated
Steel 304 stainless steel, stated
Blade size Fine 11.8 x 1.45 in; coarse and extra coarse 11.4 x 2.4 in
Cover / guard “Each one comes with a protective shell”
Foot “Anti-skid bars” at the bottom of the blade
Handle TPR handle; mounting holes for hanging
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe, stated
Warranty Not stated; “Lifetime rust free” is a claim, not a term
Model / part 1 / 3 (placeholders)
Best Sellers Rank #741 overall; #3 in Zesters

Why We Recommend It

This is the only listing that measures the blade, not the tool. “The Fine blade is 11.8×1.45 in. Coarse and Extra Coarse are 11.4×2.4 in.” Every other listing gives an overall size with the handle included, or nothing. A fine blade 11.8 inches long and 1.45 inches wide works out at about 17.1 square inches of grating surface, and each coarse blade at about 27.4, both by our arithmetic. Nobody else on the page lets you do that sum. It is the single most useful number a rasp listing can give, and nine of ten leave it out.

Three grades of cut cover more jobs than one. The set has “fine, Coarse and Extra coarse holes and a cleaning brush”. The fine blade is the zester, in the same narrow format as a classic rasp. The two wider blades are for the jobs a fine rasp is slow at: shredded cheese, carrot, chocolate curls. If you are choosing between a rasp and a small box grater, this set splits the difference; our box grater roundup covers the next step up in volume.

Most of the practical boxes are ticked. 304 stainless steel, stated: “Lemon Zester is made of 304 stainless steel”. A “protective shell” for each blade. “Anti-skid bars” at the bottom of the plane for stability, the closest thing to a non-slip foot outside the OXO and the Rainspire 304. A “comfortable TPR handle”, mounting holes for hanging, and “Lifetime rust free, dishwasher safe”. That is six of our eight questions answered, joint most on the page.

The two it misses are the process and the paperwork. The blade is “uniform, sharp, and does not clog easily”, but the listing never says etched or stamped. “Lifetime rust free” is a claim about the steel, not a warranty term, and no warranty is stated. The model field reads 1 and the part number reads 3, which are placeholders rather than identifiers, so you cannot use them to match this set to any other listing. The listed weight, 0.44 pounds, is for all three pieces.

What to weigh. It ranks #741 overall and #3 in Zesters, close behind the OXO, and is sold by Cambom. If you want one purchase that zests and shreds, and you value knowing the blade size and steel grade over knowing how the teeth were cut, this is the strongest listing here. If fine citrus zest is the only job, the Microplane’s stated photo-etching counts for more than two extra blades.

Pros

  • Only listing with stated blade sizes
  • Three cuts: fine, coarse, extra coarse
  • 304 stainless steel, stated
  • Protective shell for each blade
  • Anti-skid bars and TPR handle
  • Dishwasher safe, stated

Cons

  • Not a Microplane; blade process not stated
  • No warranty term; “lifetime rust free” only
  • Model and part fields are placeholders
  • Three pieces to store
  • Coarse blades 2.4 in wide, bulkier in a drawer
  • Listed weight covers the set, not one blade

Best for: A buyer who wants a fine zester and two shredding blades in one box, with blade sizes and steel grade in writing.

4. Deiss PRO Lemon Zester & Heavy Duty Grater — Top Seller

Wide stainless steel rasp grater with curved sides and a yellow handle

The best-selling zester on the page answers two of our eight questions, and one of them is a lifetime warranty.

Key Specifications

Brand Deiss (manufacturer: Deiss Kitchenware); not a Microplane
Blade process Not stated; “razor-sharp”
Steel Stainless, grade not stated
Blade size Not stated
Overall size 15.2 x 2.13 x 1.42 in; Size field “Wide”
Cover / guard Not stated
Foot Not stated
Handle “Comfortable, non-slip handle”
Dishwasher Not stated; rinse under running water
Warranty Lifetime, stated
Model / part “cheese grater” / 4335485289
Best Sellers Rank #201 overall; #1 in Zesters

Why We Recommend It

This is the zester Amazon sells most of, by a distance. #1 in Zesters and #201 overall, against #383 for the next-best, the Microplane Premium. Every other listing on the page ranks below #700 overall, and the OIM Omiiomio, which copies four of its bullets, sits at #103,098. Whatever is driving that, it is not detail: the Deiss answers two of our eight questions, fewer than any long rasp here.

The blade claim is all adjectives. “The Hand Grater has a razor-sharp stainless steel blade that won’t rust”. No grade, no process. It is one of the wider rasps, 2.13 inches against 1.33 for the Microplane and 2.5 for the Anddgrous, and its Size field says “Wide”. The listing’s distinctive design claim is shape, not steel: “Its unique curved sides make it extremely rigid and allow you to apply more force when it’s needed.” A wider, stiffer blade suits hard cheese, which the listing leans on: “Shear the hardest cheese into grated fluff”.

The warranty is the strongest on the page. “Deiss Kitchenware provides a lifetime warranty on its zesters”. It is the only listing on the page that states any warranty. If a blade with an unstated process dulls or bends, a lifetime promise is a remedy the others do not offer in writing. The same bullet throws in a “Healthy Cooking Tips” ebook.

The blanks are basic ones. No cover or guard is mentioned, so a 2.13-inch-wide bare blade goes in your drawer. No non-slip foot is mentioned. There is no dishwasher claim; the care advice is to “pass your cheese grader under running water”, typo included. The model field reads “cheese grater”, a description rather than a model number. The overall length, 15.2 inches, matches the Spring Chef’s stated length to the tenth of an inch, though the two give different widths and heights. And the OIM Omiiomio listing repeats this listing’s first four bullets word for word, on a rasp 1.25 inches wide.

What to weigh. Buy it for the width, the rigid curved body and the lifetime warranty, and accept that you are taking the steel and the cut on trust. For hard cheese over pasta, a wide rasp is quicker than a narrow one. For fine citrus zest, a stated photo-etched or etched blade is the safer bet.

Pros

  • #1 in Zesters, #201 overall: best rank here
  • Lifetime warranty, the only warranty here
  • Wide 2.13 in body
  • Curved sides for rigidity
  • Non-slip handle
  • Sold by its brand, Deiss Kitchenware

Cons

  • Not a Microplane; blade process not stated
  • No steel grade stated
  • No cover or guard stated
  • No non-slip foot stated
  • No dishwasher claim
  • Model field reads “cheese grater”

Best for: Hard-cheese graters who want a wide, stiff rasp and a lifetime warranty, and do not need the cut spelled out.

5. Anddgrous Upgraded Lemon Zester & Cheese Grater (Zester-001) — Best Compact Kit

Black rubber-handled flat rasp grater with a fine stainless blade, a protective cover and a small brush

A short, wide rasp with a cover, a brush and a dishwasher claim, sold by a seller whose name is not the brand.

Key Specifications

Brand Anddgrous (manufacturer: Anddgrous); sold by ZLGJ; not a Microplane
Blade process Not stated; “meticulous design blade teeth”
Steel “Food Grade Stainless Steel”; no grade number
Blade size Not stated
Overall size 12.3 x 2.5 x 1.2 in (bullet and spec table agree)
Listed weight 0.3 lb (4.8 oz, our conversion)
Cover / guard Protective cover included, plus brush
Foot Not stated
Handle Rubber, “comfortable and anti-slip”; hanging hole
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe, stated
Warranty Not stated; “friendly customer serive”
Model / part Zester-001 / Zester-001
Best Sellers Rank #15,470 overall; #13 in Zesters

Why We Recommend It

The size is stated twice and the two figures agree. “The zester grater with handle is 12.3×2.5×1.2 inches”, says the third bullet, and the spec table says the same. That is an overall size, handle included, not a blade size, but it is consistent, which is more than the OXO’s scrambled fields manage. At 2.5 inches it is the widest overall body with a credible stated width on the page, wider than the Deiss’s 2.13 inches, while its 12.3-inch length is close to the Microplane’s 12.0. A short, wide rasp suits hard cheese more than fine zest.

The kit is complete for a drawer. “What You Get: Anddgrous lemon zester grater, brush, protective cover, and our friendly customer serive.” The typo is the listing’s. Cover and brush together appear on three listings here: this, the Cambom set and the GEROSSI. The care bullet adds “or dishwasher safe”, and the title repeats it. The handle is “comfortable and anti-slip” rubber with a hole for hanging.

The blade is described by what it does not do. “The stainless steel blade is free from rust, meticulous design blade teeth will not cause blockage.” No etched or stamped claim. The title says “Food Grade Stainless Steel”, which is a description rather than a grade; it is not counted as one. The title’s “None-Slip” refers to the hand grater as a whole, and the bullets attach it to the handle; no foot is mentioned.

It has the marks of a generic product. The brand and manufacturer fields say Anddgrous; the seller is ZLGJ. The model and part fields both read Zester-001, a code that identifies little beyond the product type. We found no copy shared with another listing on this page, so we cannot point to a twin, but the brand-seller split and the generic model code are the same pattern as the GEROSSI’s, and buyers should treat the brand name as a label rather than a maker.

What to weigh. It ranks #15,470 overall and #13 in Zesters. Three of eight answered: cover, handle and dishwasher. If you want a short, wide rasp with a guard and a brush that can go in the dishwasher, it delivers what it lists. For fine zest, the stated photo-etched Microplane or an etched OXO is the safer choice.

Pros

  • Protective cover and brush included
  • Dishwasher safe, stated
  • Size stated consistently, 12.3 x 2.5 x 1.2 in
  • Widest credible stated body, 2.5 in
  • Rubber anti-slip handle with hanging hole
  • Short enough for a small drawer

Cons

  • Not a Microplane; blade process not stated
  • No steel grade number
  • Brand Anddgrous, seller ZLGJ
  • Model field is a generic code, Zester-001
  • No non-slip foot or warranty stated
  • No blade size stated

Best for: A buyer who wants a short, wide, guarded rasp for cheese that can go in the dishwasher.

6. Rainspire 304 Stainless Steel Citrus Lemon Zester (JBZSP-HEI) — Most Boxes Ticked

Black soft-handled long rasp zester with an etched stainless blade and a protective cover

Six of our eight questions answered, joint most on the page, in a feature list that follows the OXO’s almost line for line.

Key Specifications

Brand Rainspire (manufacturer: Rainspire); not a Microplane
Blade process “Etched stainless steel grating surface”, stated
Steel 304, stated in title
Blade size Not stated
Overall size 14.9 x 1.77 x 1.0 in; Size field “15*1.8 inch”
Cover / guard Safety cover included
Foot Non-slip foot, stated
Handle Soft touch, easy-grip
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe, stated
Warranty Not stated
Model / part JBZSP-HEI / JBZSP-HEI
Best Sellers Rank #7,739 overall; #12 in Graters

Why We Recommend It

On a checklist, this is the most complete long rasp here. 304 steel in the title. “Sharp, etched stainless steel grating surface”. “Safety Cover – Convenient cover keeps grating surface and hands protected when not in use.” “Non-slip Foot – A non-slip tip provides extra stability”. A soft-touch handle. Dishwasher safe. Six answers out of eight, tied with the Cambom set, and the only listing that combines a stated process, a stated grade, a cover and a foot.

The feature list reads like the OXO’s. OXO: etched surface, soft handle, non-slip foot, blade cover. Rainspire: etched surface, safety cover, non-slip foot, soft touch handle, in nearly the same order. The OXO’s longest stated dimension is 14.9 inches; this listing’s length field is also 14.9 inches. That is a match on paper, not proof of a shared factory, and the model numbers differ entirely: JBZSP-HEI against 11215400. What it does tell you is that the extras the OXO is chosen for are available on this listing too, with 304 steel and a dishwasher claim that the OXO does not state.

It is not the same tool as the other Rainspire. Rainspire Direct sells two zesters on this page. This one is a long rasp; the other, NMP-HEI, is a 5.9-inch strip zester with a channel knife. The model numbers share only the -HEI ending, and both listings give the colour as black, so the suffix appears to mark colour rather than model. They are two different products from one seller, not a duplicate listing.

The size fields mostly agree. The spec table gives 14.9 by 1.77 by 1.0 inches; the Size field rounds that to “15*1.8 inch”. At 1.77 inches it is wider than the Microplane and narrower than the Deiss. No blade size is given, and no warranty is stated. The first bullet calls it a “Premium Classic Zester”, which is the name of Microplane’s product line, not a model of this one.

What to weigh. It ranks #7,739 overall and #12 in Graters, second-lowest on the page, so few buyers are choosing it. On the listing alone, it gives you more of what you would check than anything else here. If you want the OXO’s cover and foot plus a stated grade and dishwasher claim, and you do not mind an unfamiliar brand with no warranty, this is the one to look at.

Pros

  • Six of eight answers, joint most here
  • Etched surface and 304 steel, both stated
  • Safety cover included
  • Non-slip foot for board grating
  • Dishwasher safe, stated
  • Size fields broadly agree

7. Spring Chef Stainless Steel Lemon Zester — Best Simple 304 Rasp

Long black-handled stainless steel rasp grater with a fine blade and a protective cover

A 304-steel rasp with a cover and a dishwasher claim, and a model field that says “Professional Grade”.

Key Specifications

Brand Spring Chef (manufacturer: Spring Chef); not a Microplane
Blade process Not stated; “razor-sharp”
Steel 304 (18/8), “commercial-grade”
Blade size Not stated
Overall size 15.2 x 2.17 x 1.26 in (Size field)
Cover / guard Protective blade cover included
Foot Not stated
Handle Ergonomic, non-slip; hanging hole
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe, stated
Warranty Not stated
Model / part “Professional Grade” (both fields)
Best Sellers Rank #5,681 overall; #5 in Zesters

Why We Recommend It

The steel is specified. “RAZOR-SHARP STAINLESS STEEL BLADE – Made from commercial-grade 304 (18/8) stainless steel for precise, effortless zesting.” 304 and 18/8 are two names for the same common food-grade family, and this listing gives both. Four listings on the page state a 304 or 18/8 grade in some form. That tells you the steel resists rust. It does not tell you how the teeth were formed, and the listing does not say.

It claims rigidity. “DURABLE, NO-BEND CONSTRUCTION – Sturdy yet lightweight construction that will not flex or warp under pressure.” A long rasp that flexes is harder to control on hard cheese. The listing gives no thickness or shape detail to back the claim, unlike the Deiss’s curved sides. Its Size field gives 15.2 by 2.17 by 1.26 inches, within a few hundredths of the Deiss’s 15.2 by 2.13 inches in length and width; the heights differ, 1.26 against 1.42.

The extras cover the drawer, not the board. “Includes a protective blade cover for safe handling and drawer storage, plus a hanging hole”, and dishwasher safe. There is no non-slip foot mentioned. The handle is “Ergonomic” and “non-slip”. No warranty is stated. No weight is listed.

The identifiers are not identifiers. Both the model and part fields read “Professional Grade”. Three listings on the page fill their model field with a description rather than a number, and a fourth uses the generic code Zester-001; this is the most marketing-flavoured of them. It means you cannot match this rasp to any other by model, and you have only the brand to go on if you need a replacement.

What to weigh. It ranks #5,681 overall and #5 in Zesters, sold by Spring Chef. Four of eight answered. Against the Deiss, which it matches in length, it adds a stated grade, a cover and a dishwasher claim, and drops the lifetime warranty. Against the Rainspire 304 rasp, it lacks the etched claim and the foot.

Pros

  • 304 (18/8) steel, stated
  • Protective blade cover included
  • Dishwasher safe, stated
  • No-bend construction claimed
  • Non-slip handle with hanging hole
  • #5 in Zesters

Cons

  • Not a Microplane; blade process not stated
  • No non-slip foot stated
  • No warranty stated
  • Model field reads “Professional Grade”
  • No weight listed
  • No blade size stated

Best for: A buyer who wants a long 304 rasp with a cover that can go in the dishwasher, and does not need a warranty.

8. OIM Omiiomio Lemon Zester & Heavy Duty Cheese Grater (OIM5579612) — Narrowest Rasp

Slim yellow-handled stainless steel rasp grater with a long fine blade

Four of its bullets are the Deiss PRO’s, word for word; its dimensions are not.

Key Specifications

Brand OIM OMIIOMIO (manufacturer: OIM OMIIOMIO); not a Microplane
Blade process Not stated; “razor-sharp”
Steel Stainless, grade not stated
Blade size Not stated
Overall size 13.8 x 1.25 x 0.8 in; Size field “Extra Large”
Listed weight 0.3 lb (about 4.8 oz, our conversion)
Cover / guard Not stated
Foot Not stated
Handle “Comfortable, non-slip handle”
Dishwasher Not stated; rinse under running water
Warranty Not stated
Model / part OIM5579612 / not stated
Best Sellers Rank #103,098 overall; #307 in Graters

Why We Recommend It

The copy is the Deiss PRO’s. The first four bullets match the Deiss listing word for word, down to the headings: “Comfortable to Use & Built to Last”, “Save Space in The Kitchen And Drawer”, “Improve Your Cooking” and “Zesting & Grating Have Never Been So Simple”. The only change is the brand: where Deiss says “Deiss Classic Zester Grater & Food Shredder”, this says “OIM OMIIOMIO Classic Zester Grater & Food Shredder”. Even the typo survives: “Just pass your cheese grader under running water”. Both are yellow. We disclose it plainly: this listing borrows the best seller’s words.

The measurements say it is not the same tool. Deiss lists 15.2 by 2.13 by 1.42 inches and a Size field of “Wide”. OIM lists 13.8 by 1.25 by 0.8 inches and a Size field of “Extra Large”. At 1.25 inches it is the narrowest stated rasp on the page, under 60% of the Deiss’s width by our arithmetic, yet it repeats the claim that “Its unique curved sides make it extremely rigid”. Copy written for a wide, curved blade is describing a narrow one, so the copy tells you nothing reliable about this tool’s shape.

What it leaves out is the one thing Deiss had. The Deiss listing’s fifth bullet is its lifetime warranty. OIM has four bullets, and the warranty is not among them. It answers one of our eight questions, the handle, and that answer is borrowed. No grade, no process, no cover, no foot, no dishwasher claim.

It does carry a real-looking model number. OIM5579612 is a specific code, unlike the Deiss’s “cheese grater”, so the two cannot be matched by model. The listed weight is about 0.3 pounds, against 0.42 for the Deiss, which fits a smaller body.

What to weigh. It ranks #103,098 overall and #307 in Graters, the lowest on the page by far. Buy it only if you want a slim 13.8-inch rasp and accept that the listing’s words were written for a different product. If the Deiss copy appeals, the Deiss itself adds the lifetime warranty and the best rank here.

Pros

  • Narrowest stated rasp, 1.25 in
  • Specific model number, OIM5579612
  • Non-slip handle
  • Light, about 0.3 lb listed
  • Slim 0.8 in profile for drawers
  • Sold by its brand

Cons

  • Not a Microplane; four bullets copied from Deiss
  • Copy describes a wider, curved blade
  • No warranty, unlike the Deiss it copies
  • No steel grade or blade process
  • No cover, foot or dishwasher claim
  • #103,098 overall, lowest rank here

Best for: Only a buyer who wants a very slim rasp and is content to judge it on its dimensions rather than its copy.

9. GEROSSI Stainless Steel Lemon Zester with Handle (GLGR004) — Best Gift Box

Yellow rubber-handled rasp zester in a gift box with a blade cover and a cleaning brush

A gift-boxed rasp with a cover and brush, the only 430 steel on the page, and a seller whose name is not the brand.

Key Specifications

Brand GEROSSI (manufacturer: GEROSSI); sold by DELFORI; not a Microplane
Blade process Not stated; “razor-sharp”
Steel 430 stainless steel, stated
Blade size Not stated
Overall size Not stated
Cover / guard Protective blade cover, cleaning brush, gift box
Foot Not stated
Handle Soft rubber grip; handle hole for hanging
Dishwasher Not stated
Warranty Not stated
Model / part GLGR004 / not stated
Best Sellers Rank #4,624 overall; #4 in Zesters

Why We Recommend It

The brand and the seller do not match. The brand and manufacturer fields say GEROSSI. The seller is DELFORI. The title carries neither name: “Stainless Steel Lemon Zester with Handle, Citrus Zester Grater for Cheese”. That is the pattern of a generic product sold under more than one label, and with the Anddgrous, sold by ZLGJ, it is one of two listings on this page that look most like rebadges. It does at least carry a real model number, GLGR004, which is more than several of its neighbours manage.

It is the only 430 steel here. “our lemon zester grater is made from strong 430 stainless steel that resists rust and corrosion.” As general context, 430 is a ferritic stainless: magnetic, and usually less corrosion-resistant than the 304 or 18/8 grades four other listings state. It is a common choice for graters. The listing adds that among graters “this kitchen grater is the one that keeps its edge”, with no process named to support it.

The box is the selling point. “it arrives in a gift-ready box with a cleaning brush and a protective blade cover.” Cover and brush together appear on three listings: this, the Cambom set and the Anddgrous. The handle is “a soft rubber grip designed for better control”, with a hole for hanging. No foot is mentioned. There is no dishwasher claim, and no dimensions are given at all, so you cannot compare its length or width with any other rasp here.

The copy is keyword-dense. The bullets cycle through “lemon grater, a garlic mincer, a ginger grater, a nutmeg grater or a spice grater” and “parmesan grater and a lime zester”. That tells you what the seller wants to be found for, not what the tool does differently from the others.

What to weigh. It ranks #4,624 overall and #4 in Zesters, well ahead of the Anddgrous, the other listing whose brand and seller names differ. Three of eight answered. As a gift, the box, cover and brush make it presentable. As a tool, the Spring Chef gives a 304-family grade, a cover and a dishwasher claim, and the Microplane gives a stated process.

Pros

  • Protective cover and cleaning brush included
  • Gift-ready box
  • Real model number, GLGR004
  • 430 steel stated, magnetic by grade
  • Soft rubber grip with hanging hole
  • #4 in Zesters

Cons

  • Not a Microplane; brand and seller names differ
  • Blade process not stated
  • No dimensions stated at all
  • No dishwasher claim
  • No non-slip foot or warranty stated
  • 430 usually less corrosion-resistant than 304

Best for: A gift for a cook, where the box, cover and brush matter more than the stated blade process.

10. Rainspire Stainless Steel Citrus Zester with Channel Knife (NMP-HEI) — Best for Garnish Twists

Short black-handled citrus zester with a row of small cutting holes and a channel knife notch

A different tool altogether: a short strip zester with a channel knife, ranked among zesters but nothing like a rasp.

Key Specifications

Brand Rainspire (manufacturer: Rainspire); not a Microplane
Type 2-in-1 hole zester and channel knife
Blade process Not stated; “Sharp, stainless steel holes”
Steel Stainless, grade not stated
Blade size Not stated
Size fields 5.9 x 3.9 x 2.0 in
Cover / guard Not stated
Foot Not stated
Handle “Soft, comfortable, non-slip”
Dishwasher Not stated
Warranty Not stated
Model / part NMP-HEI / NMP-HEI
Best Sellers Rank #6,862 overall; #7 in Zesters

Why We Recommend It

This is not a rasp. “2-in-1 tool easily creates citrus zest and garnishes. Made for effortless zesting and quick strips”. A strip zester has a short head with a row of small sharpened holes that you drag across a lemon to lift thin threads of peel. The “Channel knife makes strips or twists for garnishes and cocktails”, a single notch that cuts one long ribbon. Neither job is what a Microplane-style rasp does, which is shave the peel into fine, almost powdery zest that disappears into a batter or dressing.

It answers one question in eight. The handle: “Soft, comfortable, non-slip handle”. The head is “durable stainless steel” that “stays sharp and won’t rust”, with no grade. No process, cover, foot, dishwasher claim or warranty. Some of those questions matter less on a short head than on a 12-inch blade, but a cover and a dishwasher claim would still be useful.

The size fields fit the type; the weight does not. 5.9 by 3.9 by 2.0 inches is a short hand tool, under half the length of any rasp here. The listed weight is far higher than any other zester on the page, which cannot describe a tool this size, so we leave it out; it is likely a packaging figure. The Size field says “Middle”.

Same seller, different product. Rainspire Direct also sells the JBZSP-HEI rasp on this page. The two share a brand, a seller, a colour and a model-number ending, -HEI, and nothing else: one is a 14.9-inch etched rasp, the other a 5.9-inch strip zester. They are not the same model and not a duplicate listing.

What to weigh. It ranks #6,862 overall and #7 in Zesters. Buy it if you want long curls of peel for a drink, a candied-peel strip or a garnish on a plate. If you want zest for baking, sauces or dressings, or anything to do with cheese, buy a rasp. Many kitchens own one of each.

Pros

  • Channel knife for long twists and strips
  • Strip-zester head lifts threads of peel
  • Short tool, easy to store
  • Soft, non-slip handle
  • Sold by Rainspire Direct
  • #7 in Zesters

Cons

  • Not a rasp and not a Microplane
  • Answers one of our eight questions
  • No steel grade stated
  • No cover, foot or dishwasher claim
  • Listed weight implausible for its size
  • Not suited to cheese, garlic or fine zest

Best for: Cocktail and garnish work: long citrus twists and threads of peel rather than fine zest.

Eighty Questions, Thirty-Three Answers

Here is the full count. Each row is one listing; each column is one of the eight things a buyer can check before ordering a zester. A tick means the listing answers the question in words or in a spec field; a dash means it does not. Adjectives such as “razor-sharp” are not counted as a process, and “surgical grade” or “food grade” without a number is not counted as a grade. The totals are our count.

The handle is the one thing nearly everyone describes. Nine of ten say something about it, usually “non-slip” or “soft”. The exception is the Microplane Premium, which describes nothing about its handle at all. A handle is easy to photograph and easy to praise, so it is no surprise it gets the words. One of those nine handle descriptions, the OIM Omiiomio’s, is copied from the Deiss listing.

The blade gets the fewest facts. Three listings name a process, and only one gives the blade’s own size. Since the blade is the whole tool, that is the wrong way round. A buyer can see the handle in the photos; the tooth pattern and the steel are exactly what a photo cannot show and a listing should.

Paperwork is the rarest answer. One warranty in ten listings: the Deiss’s lifetime. The Cambom’s “Lifetime rust free” reads like a warranty but is a property of the steel, with no term or remedy attached. The Anddgrous offers “friendly customer serive”, which is not a warranty either.

Rank runs the opposite way to detail. The Deiss, at #201 overall, answers two. The Rainspire 304 rasp, at #7,739, answers six. The Cambom, which also answers six, is the exception, at #741. Whatever sells a zester on Amazon, a complete listing is not obviously it.

Nine listings describe the handle; one gives the size of the blade that does this job.

Photo-Etched, Etched, Stamped or Silent

The one process claim that defines a Microplane-style rasp is photo-etching. In general terms, a photo-etched blade is made by printing the tooth pattern onto a steel sheet and dissolving away the metal around it with acid, leaving small raised teeth with a cutting edge. A stamped blade is punched out by a die, which is quicker and cheaper and tends to leave a hole with a burr rather than a cutting edge. The difference shows up as slicing versus tearing: an etched tooth shaves peel off cleanly, while a punched hole can drag and bruise it and pick up the bitter white pith beneath.

  • Photo-etched, stated: the Microplane Premium Classic, which also says made in the USA. One of ten, and it is the only actual Microplane.
  • Etched, stated: the OXO Good Grips (“etched surface”) and the Rainspire 304 rasp (“etched stainless steel grating surface”). Neither says photo-etched or where the blade is made.
  • Stamped, stated: none.
  • Silent: Deiss, Cambom, Anddgrous, GEROSSI, Spring Chef, OIM Omiiomio and the Rainspire strip zester. Seven of ten. Their blades are “razor-sharp”, “uniform, sharp”, or have “meticulous design blade teeth”.

Nobody advertises a stamped blade, so silence is the only signal. A maker with an etched blade has every reason to say so; the OXO puts it in the product name. A maker who says only “razor-sharp” may have an etched blade and not mention it, or may not. The listing does not let you tell, and the honest reading is that a silent listing leaves the question open. If the cut matters to you, and for fine citrus zest it is the thing that matters most, buy one of the three that commit.

The strip zester is a separate case. The Rainspire with a channel knife uses a short row of sharpened holes to lift threads of peel, a much older design than the rasp. Its process is not stated either, but it is not competing on the same job.

What the Steel Grades Tell You

Five listings give a steel grade that a buyer can look up; the rest say only stainless, “food grade” or “surgical grade”, which are marketing terms with no single definition.

Zester Grade as stated Where stated Note
Cambom set 304 Bullet Common food-grade austenitic stainless
Spring Chef 304 (18/8) Bullet Gives both names for the same family
Rainspire 304 rasp 304 Title Grade in the product name
Microplane Premium 18/8; “surgical grade” Size field; bullet Bullet also says magnetic; see below
GEROSSI 430 Bullet Ferritic stainless, magnetic
Anddgrous “Food Grade Stainless Steel” Title No number
Deiss PRO Stainless Bullet No grade
OIM Omiiomio Stainless Bullet copied from Deiss No grade
OXO Etched Not stated — Stainless not even named
Rainspire strip zester Stainless Bullet No grade

304 and 18/8 are the same family. As general context, 18/8 refers to roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel, which is the composition of 304. It resists rust well and is the default for food-contact tools. It is also generally non-magnetic, or only weakly magnetic once worked. Four listings state it in one form or another.

Magnetism points the other way on the Microplane. Its listing says “True stainless steel is magnetic, so this item can be hung on your magnetic knife strip.” That is a reasonable thing to want from a rasp, and it implies a magnetic grade. The spec table also says 18/8, which, as general context, would usually not hold firmly on a strip. One of the two fields is likely loose, and the listing does not say which. If knife-strip storage matters, the bullet is the more specific claim.

430 is the honest outlier. The GEROSSI is the only listing to state 430, a ferritic stainless that is magnetic and widely used for graters, but usually less corrosion-resistant than 304. It is not a bad choice for a grater, and the listing deserves credit for naming it; it simply sits below the 304 group on rust resistance.

Same Model, Same Copy, or Just the Same Size

We lined up every model and part number on the page, and compared the bullets. No two listings share a model number. But one listing copies another’s bullets outright, some pairs share a specification, and four fill the model field with a description or a generic code.

Cambom set 1 3 Cambom / Cambom Blades 11.8 x 1.45 and 11.4 x 2.4 in

The OIM Omiiomio copies the Deiss word for word. Its four bullets are the Deiss’s first four, headings and all, with the brand name swapped and the “cheese grader” typo kept. Both are yellow. But the dimensions differ: 15.2 by 2.13 by 1.42 inches for the Deiss, 13.8 by 1.25 by 0.8 for the OIM, and the model numbers are unrelated. On the listings, this is shared copy on a different tool, not a duplicate of the Deiss. The OIM also drops the one bullet that set the Deiss apart, its lifetime warranty.

The two Rainspire listings are different products. Same brand, same seller, same colour, and a shared -HEI ending on the model number that lines up with the black colour both list. Beyond that, one is a 14.9-inch etched rasp and the other a 5.9-inch strip zester with a channel knife. Not a duplicate, and not the same model.

The OXO and the Rainspire 304 rasp share a feature list. Etched surface, cover, non-slip foot, soft handle, in nearly the same order, and the same 14.9-inch figure for the longest dimension. The model numbers are unrelated. Treat it as a matched specification, not as evidence of a shared maker.

The 15-inch rasps cluster on size. Deiss and Spring Chef both list 15.2 inches long and about 2.1 to 2.2 inches wide; the Rainspire 304 rasp lists 14.9 by 1.77. The Deiss and the Rainspire 304 rasp list the same 0.42-pound weight. Two of these use descriptions in the model field. None of that proves a common factory, but it does mean you cannot tell them apart by model number, and should compare them on what each listing commits to.

Two listings look most like rebadges. The GEROSSI’s brand is GEROSSI and its seller DELFORI, and its title names neither. The Anddgrous’s brand is Anddgrous and its seller ZLGJ, with a generic Zester-001 model code. That split between label and seller is the most direct sign of a generic product on the page. We found no copy shared between either of them and another listing here.

What Each Step Up Actually Buys

The bare listings — Deiss PRO, OIM Omiiomio and the Rainspire strip zester. One or two answers each. The Deiss buys the best rank on the page, a wide curved blade and the only warranty; the OIM buys a slim body and the Deiss’s words without its warranty; the strip zester buys a channel knife and a different kind of zest. None tells you the steel grade or the cut.

The cover-and-claim listings — Anddgrous, GEROSSI, Spring Chef. Three or four answers. These buy a cover in the box, a brush on two of them, a dishwasher claim on two, and a stated grade on two, 430 or 304. They still leave the blade process unstated, and two of the three split brand from seller.

The stated-process listings — the Microplane and the OXO. Three or four answers, but they include the one that matters most for the cut. The Microplane buys photo-etching, US manufacture and a dishwasher claim; the OXO buys an etched blade with a cover and a foot, from a brand you can contact.

The complete checklists — the Rainspire 304 rasp and the Cambom set. Six answers each. The Rainspire buys etched, 304, cover, foot and dishwasher in one long rasp. The Cambom buys 304, stated blade sizes and three cuts with covers and anti-skid bars, but no stated process.

Brand does not track completeness. The two most complete listings are from the least familiar brands, and the best-known names, Microplane and OXO, answer three or four. What the brand buys is the process claim and a maker who can be held to it. What the unfamiliar listings buy is more in the box.

What to Check Before You Buy

Look for the Word Etched

Three listings commit to it: one says photo-etched and two say etched. None says stamped, so silence is the only warning you get. For fine citrus zest, where a clean slice keeps the pith behind, an etched blade is the claim to insist on. “Razor-sharp” is not a process.

Check Whether It Is Actually a Microplane

One of ten is. The brand and manufacturer fields say Microplane only on the Premium Classic, 46901. Everything else uses the word for search, and one Rainspire bullet borrows “Premium Classic”, the name of a Microplane line. If the brand matters, read the brand field, not the title.

Find a Number for the Steel

304 or 18/8 on four listings, 430 on one, “food grade”, “surgical grade” or plain stainless on the rest. 304 resists rust best of the grades given. If you want to hang the rasp on a knife strip, a magnetic claim is more useful than a grade, and only the Microplane makes one.

Ask for the Blade Size, Not the Tool Size

Only the Cambom gives it: 11.8 by 1.45 inches for its fine blade. Every other figure includes the handle. Overall rasp lengths run from 12.0 inches on the Microplane to 15.2 inches on the Deiss and Spring Chef, and a longer handle does not mean a longer blade.

Count on a Cover Only if It Is Listed

Six listings include one; the Microplane does not. A bare rasp in a drawer is a hazard to fingers and a risk to the teeth. If you choose a model without a cover, budget for a guard or hang it up.

Decide Whether You Grate Against a Board

A non-slip foot keeps the tip planted while you draw cheese or citrus down the blade. The OXO and the Rainspire 304 rasp state one, and the Cambom has anti-skid bars. The Microplane’s end tabs protect the worktop but are not described as non-slip. A steady cutting board guide under the tip helps either way.

Read the Copy for Copies

The OIM Omiiomio’s bullets are the Deiss’s, word for word, on a rasp with different dimensions. Where two listings share copy, the words tell you nothing about either tool; compare the numbers instead. The only warranty on the page, the Deiss’s lifetime, did not make the copy.

Six listings include a cover and three a non-slip foot; check the box before the blade goes in a drawer.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming every “Microplane zester” is a Microplane. One of these ten is; check the brand field, not the search term.
  • Reading “razor-sharp” as a blade process. Seven of ten listings use adjectives and never say etched or stamped.
  • Comparing overall lengths as blade lengths. Only the Cambom states blade size, 11.8 x 1.45 in; every other figure includes the handle.
  • Expecting a cover with the Microplane. Its listing does not mention one, while six of the nine others include it.
  • Treating “lifetime rust free” as a warranty. It describes the steel; only one listing, the Deiss, states a warranty.
  • Trusting copy that appears twice. The OIM Omiiomio repeats four Deiss bullets on a rasp 1.25 in wide against 2.13 in.
  • Buying a strip zester for fine zest. The 5.9-inch Rainspire with a channel knife lifts threads and twists, not baking zest.
  • Taking the top rank as the most complete listing. The #1 zester answers two of eight questions; two lower-ranked listings answer six.

Who Should Buy Which

Buy the Microplane Premium Classic if you want the real Microplane. The only photo-etched claim here, made in the USA, dishwasher safe and #2 in Zesters. Accept that no cover is listed, the handle is not described and the steel description pulls between “surgical grade” and 18/8.

Buy the OXO Good Grips Etched if you grate against a board and store in a drawer. An etched blade, a cover and a non-slip foot, sold by Amazon.com. Accept that it gives no steel grade and no dishwasher claim.

Buy the Cambom set if one purchase has to zest and shred. Fine, coarse and extra coarse blades with stated sizes, 304 steel, shells for all three and anti-skid bars. Accept that the blade process is not stated and no warranty is given.

Buy the Deiss PRO if hard cheese is the main job and a warranty matters. A wide 2.13-inch rasp with curved sides, the only warranty on the page, lifetime, and the best rank here. Accept that you are taking the steel and the cut on trust, with no cover.

Buy the Anddgrous if you want a short, wide, guarded rasp. 12.3 by 2.5 inches, cover, brush and dishwasher claim. Accept no stated grade or process, and a brand that differs from its seller, ZLGJ.

Buy the Rainspire 304 rasp if the checklist matters more than the name. Etched, 304, cover, foot and dishwasher, six of eight answered. Accept an unfamiliar brand, no warranty and one of the lower ranks on the page.

Buy the Spring Chef if you want a long 304 rasp with a cover for the dishwasher. 304 (18/8), cover, dishwasher claim and a no-bend promise. Accept no foot, no warranty and a model field that says “Professional Grade”.

Buy the OIM Omiiomio only for its slim body. 1.25 inches wide, the narrowest stated rasp. Accept that its bullets are copied from the Deiss, it carries no warranty, and it has the lowest rank here.

Buy the GEROSSI as a gift. Gift box, cover and brush, and a real model number. Accept 430 steel, no dimensions and no dishwasher claim, from a seller whose name is not the brand.

Buy the Rainspire strip zester only for twists and garnishes. A channel knife and a short hole-type head. Accept that it is not a rasp and will not give you fine zest or grated cheese.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Microplane zester?

If you mean the brand, the only Microplane on this page is the Premium Classic, model 46901: photo-etched blades made in the USA, a dishwasher-safe claim, and the #2 rank in Zesters on 5 October 2026. It is also the only listing of the ten that says photo-etched. If you mean any rasp of the Microplane type, the answer depends on what you want in writing. The OXO Good Grips Etched adds a cover and a non-slip foot to an etched blade. The Cambom set is the only listing that gives blade sizes and comes with three cuts. The Deiss PRO is the best-selling zester and the only one with a warranty, a lifetime term, though it says nothing about how its teeth are made. The Rainspire 304 rasp answers the most of our eight questions. Star ratings were not captured for this roundup, so none of this rests on owner scores.

Is a Microplane the same as a zester?

Microplane is a brand that makes rasp-style graters, and its name has become shorthand for the whole type. A rasp is a long, narrow blade covered in tiny sharp teeth that shave citrus peel into fine zest and hard cheese into fluff. The older kind of zester is a short tool with a row of sharpened holes on its head that lifts thin threads of peel; the Rainspire with a channel knife on this page is that kind. Both are sold as zesters, and Amazon ranks both in the same category, but they make different zest. Rasp zest is fine enough to disappear into a cake batter or a dressing. Strip-zester threads are better for garnish and for infusing. Of the ten listings here, one is an actual Microplane, nine are rasps or zesters from other brands, and one of those is a strip zester rather than a rasp.

What does photo-etched mean on a zester?

In general terms, photo-etching is a way of making a blade by printing the tooth pattern onto a sheet of steel and dissolving the unprotected metal away chemically. What remains is a field of small raised teeth with cutting edges. The alternative is stamping, where a die punches holes through the sheet; that is quicker and cheaper, and tends to leave holes with burrs that tear rather than slice. On a zester the difference matters because a clean slice lifts the coloured peel and leaves the bitter white pith behind. On this page one listing says photo-etched, the Microplane Premium Classic, and it adds made in the USA. Two more, the OXO and the Rainspire 304 rasp, say etched without the photo. None says stamped. The other seven do not say how their blades are made, so the process is unknown rather than known to be stamped.

What is the best lemon zester for baking?

For baking you want fine zest that blends into a batter, dough or glaze without chewy strands, so a rasp is the right tool rather than a strip zester. On the listings, the best-qualified are the three that state an etched blade: the Microplane Premium Classic, which says photo-etched and made in the USA, and the OXO Good Grips and Rainspire 304 rasp, which say etched. The Microplane listing makes the specific claim that its tooth set takes the rind and leaves the white pith, which is the thing bakers care about, since pith is bitter. The OXO and the Rainspire add a cover and a non-slip foot, which help if you rest the tip on a board and draw the lemon down. A narrow blade suits citrus better than a wide one, which is another point for the 1.33-inch Microplane. Avoid the Rainspire strip zester for this job: it lifts threads of peel, not fine zest.

What is the best zester grater for Parmesan?

Hard cheese rewards a wider, stiffer blade, because each stroke covers more surface. The Anddgrous is the widest credible stated rasp here at 2.5 inches, on a short 12.3-inch body. The Deiss PRO is 2.13 inches wide with curved sides it says make it rigid, and its listing leans heavily on hard cheese. The Spring Chef is a similar size, 15.2 by 2.17 inches, and claims a no-bend construction. The Cambom set includes two coarse blades, each 11.4 by 2.4 inches, which make shreds rather than fluff, alongside a fine blade for zest. If you grate onto a board, a non-slip foot helps keep the rasp steady, and only the OXO and the Rainspire 304 rasp state one, with Cambom offering anti-skid bars. The photo-etched Microplane will also turn Parmesan into fluffy mounds, as its listing says, just a little more slowly on a narrower body.

Are zesters dishwasher safe?

Five of the ten listings here say so: the Microplane, the Cambom set, the Spring Chef, the Rainspire 304 rasp and the Anddgrous. The other five, the Deiss, OXO, GEROSSI, OIM Omiiomio and the Rainspire strip zester, make no dishwasher claim, which is not the same as saying they are unsafe. Even the listings that claim it give the same practical advice first: rinse immediately after use, and brush the underside of the blade, where cheese and zest collect. Microplane’s listing says exactly that, then adds that the tool can also go in the dishwasher. Dried-on cheese is much harder to remove from fine teeth than fresh, and a dishwasher may not reach into every tooth. Three listings include a cleaning brush, the Cambom, GEROSSI and Anddgrous. If you do use the dishwasher, keep the blade where it will not knock against other utensils, which can dull fine teeth.

Do I need a cover for my zester?

You need some way to keep the teeth away from your fingers and from other metal. A rasp blade is a field of tiny cutting edges, and reaching into a drawer where one lies bare is the most common way to nick a knuckle. Contact with other utensils can also blunt the teeth. Six listings here include a cover or guard: the OXO, the Cambom set with one for each blade, the GEROSSI, the Spring Chef, the Rainspire 304 rasp and the Anddgrous. The Microplane listing does not mention one, nor do the Deiss, the OIM Omiiomio or the Rainspire strip zester. If you choose one of those, the alternatives are to hang it from its handle hole, or, for the Microplane, which says it is magnetic, to keep it on a magnetic knife strip, as its listing suggests. Either way, keep the blade from rattling loose in a drawer.

Which zester has the best warranty?

Only one listing states a warranty. The Deiss PRO offers a lifetime warranty on its zesters, in the listing’s own words. The Microplane Premium Classic does not state a warranty on its listing, and neither do the other eight. The Cambom set says “Lifetime rust free”, which describes the steel rather than promising to replace or refund anything, so we do not count it. The OIM Omiiomio copies four of the Deiss’s bullets word for word but not the warranty bullet, so the promise does not travel with the words. If warranty cover is the deciding factor, the Deiss is the clear choice from these listings, and it also holds the best Best Sellers Rank on the page, #1 in Zesters. What it does not state is its steel grade, its blade process, a cover or a dishwasher claim, so you are buying the paperwork rather than the specification.

The only real Microplane: photo-etched blades made in the USA, dishwasher safe, #2 in Zesters.

An etched blade with a cover and a non-slip foot in the box, sold by Amazon.com.

Best SetCambom Three-Piece Zester Grater Set

The only stated blade sizes, three cuts in 304 steel, a shell for each and anti-skid bars.

Ten zesters answer the Microplane search, and one of them is a Microplane. It is also the only listing that says its teeth are photo-etched, the process that made the name. Two more say etched. None says stamped. The other seven say “razor-sharp” or similar and leave the cut to your imagination.

Across eight checkable questions, the listings give 33 answers out of 80. Nine describe the handle. One measures the blade. One states a warranty. The best-selling zester on the page answers two questions, and the two most complete listings, the Rainspire 304 rasp and the Cambom set, come from the least familiar brands.

No two listings share a model number, but one shares another’s words. The OIM Omiiomio repeats four Deiss bullets on a rasp with different dimensions and no warranty. The two Rainspire listings are a rasp and a strip zester, not the same tool. The OXO and the Rainspire 304 rasp share a feature list. The GEROSSI, sold by DELFORI, and the Anddgrous, sold by ZLGJ, look most like rebadges.

So buy the claim, not the adjective. Look for etched in writing, check the brand field if the name matters, find a number for the steel, and count on a cover only if it is listed.

If you buy one zester from this page, make it the Microplane Premium Classic: the only real Microplane, photo-etched blades made in the USA, a dishwasher-safe claim and the #2 rank in Zesters. Add a guard or a knife strip, because none is listed. If you want the cover and foot in the box, the OXO Good Grips Etched delivers both with an etched blade; if you want to zest and shred from one purchase, the Cambom set is the only listing that tells you how big its blades are.
