Two Best Cake Pans Fall One Answer Short of a Full Spec Sheet

Affiliate Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. This does not affect the price you pay.

A cake pan listing should answer eight questions: diameter, wall height, straight or sloped sides, material, pieces in the box, oven limit, dishwasher and warranty. We put those eight to ten round cake pan listings and counted the answers. Of 80 possible answers, the ten give 55, and no listing answers all eight.

Two answer seven. Fat Daddio’s 8 by 2 inch anodised pair gives a 2 inch wall, its metal down to the gauge, a 550°F limit, a care line and a lifetime warranty, and never says whether its sides are straight. Wilton’s 9 by 2 inch aluminium pair says “straight sides”, 450°F and “not dishwasher safe”, and its warranty field reads, in full, “Warranty”. Only two listings say whether the sides are straight, and none states a 3-inch wall.

This guide sorts the ten by how many of the eight questions each listing answers, then by Best Sellers Rank, and reads what each silence costs you. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup; popularity is Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank only.

Best Sellers Ranks and specifications are taken from each manufacturer’s Amazon listing as displayed on 5 October 2026 through a United States connection, and may change. The score is our count. A question counts as answered only where the listing’s title, bullets or spec table give a figure or a plain statement. A warranty counts only where a term is given; Wilton’s warranty field reads just “Warranty”, and EWFEN’s refund-or-replacement promise is not a warranty term. A care line counts for the dishwasher question whether it says safe, not safe or hand wash recommended. Wall heights: the GoodCook’s 1.6 inches is the overall height from its bullet; the EWFEN’s 2.0 inches, the tutikuki’s 1.6 inches and the Amazon Basics’ 2.3 inches come only from spec tables; the Nordic Ware’s bullet says 2.5 inches and its spec table 2.125 inches. Chicago Metallic’s spec table lists a 2.01 inch dimension without saying what it measures, so we do not count it as a wall height. Ranks are overall Best Sellers Ranks as returned on 5 October 2026. Six pans were sold by Amazon.com at capture; the Fat Daddio’s by BakeDeco, the tutikuki by Shenglizhu, the EWFEN by EWFEN US and the E-far by e-far. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for any product here.

How We Chose These Ten

We researched current listings, compared manufacturer specifications and documentation, and read each listing’s title, bullets and spec table against the same eight questions. We did not carry out hands-on testing, and nothing below is presented as measured performance data. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup. We used Amazon Best Sellers Rank, buy-box stock and listing specifications instead, and nothing on this page describes or implies how owners have scored these pans.

  • Round layer cake pans only — every product here is a round, fixed-base cake pan or set for layer cakes, from 6 to 10 inches across. Bundt-style ring pans, springform pans, square and rectangular pans and sheet cakes were not in the running.
  • Eight questions, counted the same way — diameter, wall height, side shape, material, number of pieces, oven limit, dishwasher or care claim, and warranty. Each answer had to appear in the listing in words or figures. A spec table field counted; a photograph or a brand reputation did not.
  • Silence recorded as silence — where a listing does not state something, we write “Not stated”, even where the material would usually suggest an answer. Aluminium cake pans are rarely bothered by a home oven, for instance, but a pan with no stated limit is a pan with no stated limit.
  • Conflicts reported in full — where two fields on one listing disagree, as on the Nordic Ware’s height or the Fat Daddio’s overall diameter, both figures are given. Fields that cannot describe the product, such as the GoodCook’s weight, the Sur La Table’s zero-inch height and the tutikuki’s item count of zero, are left out.
  • Model numbers compared — we checked every listed model and part number for duplicates. No two products here share one. The two stainless sets share most of their sales copy, and we say so.
  • Our arithmetic labelled — baking areas, brim volumes and Celsius conversions on this page are our calculations from the listed diameters and heights, and are marked as such wherever they appear.
  • Popularity from Best Sellers Rank only — ranks are quoted exactly as returned on 5 October 2026, overall and and in Amazon’s Round category, where all ten are filed.
  • Verified stock and seller — each product was the buy-box offer and in stock on amazon.com on 5 October 2026.

The Ten Cake Pans in Detail

1. Fat Daddio’s Anodized Aluminum Round Cake Pans, 2 Piece Set, 8 x 2 Inch — Best Overall

Two plain silver round aluminium cake pans with straight walls, shown side by side

Seven answers out of eight, the highest stated oven limit on the page, and a gauge where others write adjectives.

Key Specifications

Diameter 8 in interior; 9 in overall (bullet); 8.66 in (spec table)
Wall height 2 in
Side shape Not stated
Material 16-gauge anodized aluminum, solid bottom, uncoated
Pieces 2
Capacity 3.5 cups (828 ml) each, stated
Oven limit 550°F (285°C as listed)
Dishwasher Hand wash recommended
Warranty Lifetime Warranty
Seller BakeDeco
Best Sellers Rank #876 overall; #1 in Round

Why We Recommend It

This is the most completely described cake pan on the page. Of our eight questions it answers seven, and it answers several of them more precisely than anyone else. The interior is “8″ x 2″ (20.3 x 5.1 cm)”, the overall size 9 by 2 inches. The metal is “16-Gauge Anodized Aluminum” with a “Solid bottom”. There are two pans. The heat limit is “Temperature-rated up to 550° F (285° C)”. The care line is “Hand wash recommended.” And the spec table gives a “Lifetime Warranty”. No other listing combines a gauge, a temperature and a warranty term.

The one missing answer is side shape. The listing never says straight or sloped. It says the pans are “Designed for round tiered and layered cakes”, and a pan sold for tiered cakes usually has straight walls, because a sloped layer leaves a step when you stack it. But that is our inference, not the listing’s statement, and it is the only one of our eight questions this listing leaves to you. Its fellow seven-answer listing, the Wilton 9 by 2 inch pair, is the reverse: it says straight sides and leaves out a warranty term.

The 550°F figure is the highest on the page, and only four listings give one. The Wilton pair and the tutikuki stop at 450°F and the Amazon Basics at 428°F; the other six give nothing. For layer cakes, which commonly bake around 325 to 375°F, any of those figures is ample. The higher ceiling matters for the other jobs the listing names: “deep-dish pizzas”, and use in a “Pressure cooker, air fryer, toaster oven and freezer”. Note one small inconsistency: 550°F converts to about 288°C by our arithmetic, a little above the 285°C the listing prints. Neither figure will trouble a home oven.

The capacity line is worth reading closely. Each pan holds “3.5 cups (828 ml)”, the listing says. Filled to the brim, an 8 by 2 inch straight-walled round holds about 7 cups by our arithmetic. So the stated capacity is about half the brim volume, which lines up with the common advice to fill a layer pan about half to two-thirds full. The listing does not explain the figure, but read as a batter guide it is useful: two of these take about 7 cups of batter between them, and the listing is the only one on the page that gives a capacity at all.

Anodised aluminium is the material choice that sets it apart. The pans are uncoated, and the listing makes three claims for that: “Safe for citrus-based foods unlike traditional bakeware”, “Will never rust, peel or flake”, and “No extra metals, chemical additives, dyes, PFAS, CFC’s, PTFE’s or PFOA’s”. It also says the pans “Heat & Cools Quicker”, to prevent over-baking. Uncoated means greasing and lining, as with any bare metal pan; the trade is that there is no coating to wear out, which is why the hand-wash advice is about keeping the anodised finish, not protecting a nonstick layer.

What to weigh. It ranks #876 overall and #1 in Round, the best overall rank on the page. The diameter fields disagree slightly: the bullet says 9 inches overall and the spec table 8.66 inches, and the model field reads “PRD-PARENT”, which is a listing placeholder rather than a model number. It is sold by BakeDeco, not Amazon.com. If you bake 9-inch recipes, this is the wrong diameter; the Wilton pair is the 9-inch equivalent.

Pros

  • Seven of eight questions answered
  • 550°F stated, the highest limit here
  • 16-gauge anodised aluminium; solid bottom
  • Lifetime Warranty in the spec table
  • Only listing to state a capacity, 3.5 cups each
  • #1 in Round

Cons

  • Side shape never stated
  • Hand wash recommended
  • Overall diameter given as 9 in and 8.66 in
  • Model field is a placeholder
  • Uncoated: grease or line it
  • 8-inch only; not for 9-inch recipes

Best for: A baker who wants two 8-inch layer pans with every important number written down, and a lifetime warranty behind them.

2. Wilton Aluminum Round Cake Pan Set, Made Without PFAS, 9 x 2 in — Best 9-Inch Set

Two bright silver round aluminium cake pans with straight sides stacked slightly offset

One of two 9-inch pairs on the page, and one of only two listings to say straight sides, with one blank where the warranty should be.

Key Specifications

Diameter 9 in
Wall height 2 in
Side shape Straight sides, stated
Material Aluminum, made without PFAS
Pieces 2 (pack of 2)
Oven limit 450°F
Dishwasher Not dishwasher safe; hand wash
Warranty Field reads “Warranty”; no term given
Model 191003076
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #2,890 overall; #6 in Round

Why We Recommend It

This is the pan most 9-inch recipes are written for, and it says so plainly. The first bullet: “the pans measure 9 inches in diameter and 2 inches deep”. There are two in the pack, and the second bullet answers the question eight of ten listings skip: “This durable cake pan has straight sides to make it easy for the batter to rise, creating tall cake layers with clean, straight edges, perfect for decorating”. If you are stacking and frosting a two-layer cake, that sentence is the one you want to read.

It answers seven of our eight questions. Diameter, wall height, side shape, material, pieces, an oven limit of “450°F”, and a care line that leaves no room for doubt: “hand wash in warm, soapy water; rinse and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth; not dishwasher safe”. The miss is the warranty. The spec table has a warranty field, and it reads, in full, “Warranty”. That tells you a warranty field exists. It does not tell you how long anything is covered for, so we do not count it.

Nine inches is a real step up from eight. A 9-inch round has about 63.6 square inches of base against about 50.3 for an 8-inch, by our arithmetic, roughly 27% more. Filled to the brim, a 9 by 2 inch pan holds about 8.8 cups, against about 7 for an 8 by 2. So a recipe written for two 9-inch layers poured into two 8-inch pans will sit deeper and need longer, and may overflow; one written for 8-inch pans will bake thin in these. Match the pan to the recipe. On this page, this is one of two matched 9-inch pairs; the GoodCook and the Sur La Table are single 9-inch pans.

The material is plain aluminium, and the listing says what that means for care. It is made “without PFAS” and with “high-quality aluminum construction for even heat distribution”. The listing does not call it nonstick, so expect to grease and line it. Bare aluminium is also why the dishwasher is ruled out: detergents are known to dull and darken uncoated aluminium, and the listing’s instruction to dry it with a soft cloth fits that. It also claims the pan “helps minimize over-baking and cake scrap for smoother stacking and leveling”, a claim about outcomes that we cannot check.

Against the other 9-inch pair. The Amazon Basics set is also two 9-inch pans sold by Amazon.com, and it answers six questions to this listing’s seven. It gives a 428°F limit, a dishwasher-safe line, a nonstick carbon steel body and a 2.3 inch height from its spec table only, but nothing on side shape. So the choice is clear: a coating and a dishwasher there, straight sides in writing and bare aluminium here. This pair ranks #2,890 overall and #6 in Round; the Amazon Basics sits at #8,415 overall.

What to weigh. Sold by Amazon.com, with the clearest side-shape and care statements on the page. The listed weight is 0.7 pounds, and the listing does not say whether that is one pan or the pack. The two real compromises are the 450°F ceiling, which is fine for cake but lower than the Fat Daddio’s 550°F, and hand washing. If you want a dishwasher, this is not your pan; if you want a warranty term in writing, the Fat Daddio’s, Chicago Metallic, GoodCook and Nordic Ware all give one.

Pros

  • One of two matched 9-inch pairs
  • Straight sides stated in words
  • 450°F limit stated
  • Clear care instructions
  • Made without PFAS
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Not dishwasher safe
  • Warranty field gives no term
  • Uncoated: grease or line it
  • 450°F, below the Fat Daddio’s 550°F
  • Weight not clear per pan or per pack
  • More care than the nonstick 9-inch pair

Best for: Anyone baking standard two-layer 9-inch cakes who wants straight sides in writing and does not mind washing up by hand.

3. tutikuki 8″ Round Cake Pan, 3 PCS Nonstick Carbon Steel with 100 PCS Parchment Paper — Best Set with Liners

Three black nonstick round cake pans with small side handles beside a stack of parchment paper circles

Three 8-inch pans, 100 parchment papers and a 450°F limit, on a listing whose only wall height is a shallow spec-table figure.

Key Specifications

Diameter 8 in (title); spec table 9.44 x 8.07 in
Wall height 1.6 in (spec table only)
Side shape Not stated
Material Carbon steel, nonstick
Pieces 3 pans plus 100 parchment papers
Oven limit 450°F
Dishwasher Dishwasher Safe (title); bullets say wipe with warm water
Warranty Not stated
Handles Ergonomically designed handles
Model Not stated
Seller Shenglizhu
Best Sellers Rank #1,791 overall; #3 in Round

Why We Recommend It

This is the only set on the page that ships with liners. The title spells it out: “3PCS Nonstick Cake Pans with 100 PCS Parchment Paper”. The papers are “carefully crafted from natural wood pulp” and “can fit the cake pans closely”. Lining the base of a cake pan is standard practice even on nonstick, so 100 pre-cut rounds save a real chore. It answers six of our eight questions: an 8-inch diameter, a wall height from the spec table, carbon steel with a nonstick coating, three pans, an oven limit and a dishwasher claim.

The oven limit is stated in words. “They can easily handle the high-temperature environment up to 450°F in the oven without fearing thermal stress.” That puts it level with the Wilton pair and behind only the Fat Daddio’s 550°F. Of the five nonstick steel pans on the page, it is one of only two to give a figure.

The wall height is the weak point. No bullet gives a depth. The spec table lists a height of 1.6 inches, with a length of 9.44 inches and a width of 8.07 inches; the extra length is presumably the handles, though the listing does not say. If 1.6 inches is the pan, this is the shallowest 8-inch pan here, against 2 inches on the Fat Daddio’s and the EWFEN. Brimful, an 8-inch round at 1.6 inches holds about 5.6 cups by our arithmetic, against about 7 for an 8 by 2. The listing pitches the set for “large wedding cakes” and “rich cheesecakes”; a shallow pan suits neither well. Confirm the depth before you plan a recipe around it.

The care answer is in the title, not the bullets. The title ends “Dishwasher Safe”. The cleaning bullet never mentions a dishwasher: “After baking, just wipe gently with warm water and the cake pans will be clean.” We count the title’s claim. On a nonstick coating, the gentler of the two instructions is the one that will make it last.

The handles are the other distinctive feature. “The ergonomically designed handles are a highlight of these cake pans”, the listing says, and “holding the handles can prevent burns”. No other round pan here names handles; the GoodCook offers a wide rim instead. Handles also add to the footprint, so check that three of these fit your oven shelf side by side.

What to weigh. It ranks #1,791 overall and #3 in Round, and it is sold by Shenglizhu rather than Amazon.com. The spec table gives no model number and an item count of 0, which contradicts the 3 pans in the title; the listed weight of about 1.9 pounds is presumably the full set, though the listing does not say. There is no side-shape answer and no warranty. If you want three matched 8-inch layers in one bake with the liners already cut, it is the only box that does it; just measure the depth when it arrives.

Pros

  • 100 parchment papers included
  • Three matched 8-inch pans
  • 450°F stated
  • Dishwasher safe in the title
  • Handles on each pan
  • #3 in Round

Cons

  • Height only in the spec table: 1.6 in
  • Side shape not stated
  • No warranty stated
  • No model number; item count field reads 0
  • Bullets say wipe clean; title says dishwasher
  • Sold by Shenglizhu, not Amazon.com

Best for: A baker who wants three 8-inch layers in one bake with liners in the box, and who will confirm the depth first.

4. E-far 6 Inch Cake Pan Set of 3, Stainless Steel Round Smash Cake Baking Pans — Best Small Set

Three small mirror-finish stainless steel round cake pans arranged in a row

Three straight-sided 6-inch pans with a dishwasher claim, and nothing at all on heat limit, warranty or model.

Key Specifications

Diameter 6 in inner; 6½ in outer
Wall height 2 in
Side shape Straight-sided, stated
Material Stainless steel, mirror finish, uncoated
Pieces 3
Oven limit Not stated
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe, stated
Warranty Not stated
Model Not stated
Seller e-far
Best Sellers Rank #3,408 overall; #7 in Round

Why We Recommend It

This is the small-cake set on the page, and it answers six questions. The size is given twice over: “Inner size: 6 x 2”, Outer size: 6½” x 2””. There are three pans. They are “pure stainless steel” with a “Mirror finished surface for an easy and clean release”. They are “dishwasher safe & pot safe”. And the side-shape answer is there in words: “Straight-sided design for making stacked cakes easily”. Only two listings on the page say straight, and this is one.

What it leaves out is heat and cover. There is no oven limit anywhere in the listing, only “Evenly heated stainless steel provides your baked goods with a perfect browning”. There is no warranty field, and no model or part number in the spec table at all. Uncoated stainless steel has no coating to fail at cake temperatures, so the missing limit is less of a worry here than on a nonstick pan, but it is still missing.

Six inches is a different job. A 6-inch round has about 28.3 square inches of base, by our arithmetic, a little over half the area of an 8-inch pan. Brimful, each 6 by 2 pan holds about 3.9 cups. The listing names the job: “Perfect for making a layered smash cake for your kid’s first birthday”. Three 6-inch layers make a tall, narrow cake, or the top tier of a larger one. A standard 8- or 9-inch recipe split into these three will need its baking time cut and its layers watched.

Stainless is the unusual material choice in cake pans. The listing sells it as “Unlike aluminum and Teflon coating pans, Healthy for your daily baking use”. Stainless steel conducts heat much less readily than aluminium, which is why most cake pans are aluminium or aluminised steel; the listing’s claim of even heating is a claim we cannot verify. A mirror finish also reflects more oven heat than a dull or dark pan, which tends to slow browning. If you have baked in aluminium before, expect to check these a little early and a little often until you know them.

Its copy is shared almost word for word with the EWFEN set. Both say “No harmful chemicals leaching into food”, both say “Not as the springform, Easy to clean up and dishwasher safe & pot safe”, and both list the same uses: “cake, quiche, deep dish pizza, fruit cobblers, flan and gelatin molded desserts”. EWFEN lists model BXGDGP-002 and 8-inch pans; E-far lists no model and 6-inch pans. On the listings alone, they are not the same model, and we cannot say whether they share a maker.

What to weigh. It ranks #3,408 overall and #7 in Round, and it is sold by e-far rather than Amazon.com. The listed weight is 1.0 pound, which does not say whether it covers one pan or three. The “Rolled edge helps with comfortable holding”. If you want a straight-sided small set you can put in the dishwasher, it is the only one here; if you want stated heat and warranty figures, nothing in this size range gives them.

Pros

  • Straight-sided, stated
  • Dishwasher safe, stated
  • Inner and outer size both given
  • Three pans for tiers or smash cakes
  • Uncoated stainless: no coating to wear
  • Rolled edges

Cons

  • No oven limit stated
  • No warranty stated
  • No model or part number
  • Stainless heats less readily than aluminium
  • Mirror finish may slow browning
  • Sold by e-far, not Amazon.com

Best for: Small celebration cakes, smash cakes and top tiers, by a baker who wants straight sides and a dishwasher.

5. Amazon Basics Nonstick Carbon Steel Round Cake Pans, 9 in., Set of 2 — Best Nonstick 9-Inch Pair

Two black nonstick round cake pans side by side on a plain white surface

The second matched 9-inch pair on the page puts its oven limit and dishwasher claim in the title, and stops there.

Key Specifications

Diameter 9 in
Wall height 2.3 in (spec table only)
Side shape Not stated
Material Carbon steel, nonstick
Pieces 2
Oven limit 428°F
Dishwasher Dishwasher-safe; hand-wash for best results
Warranty Not stated
Other dimensions 11.0 x 9.6 in (spec table, unlabelled)
Model LRC2004
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #8,415 overall; #19 in Round

Why We Recommend It

This is the other matched pair of 9-inch pans, and it leads with two answers. The title reads “Dishwasher and Oven-Safe up to 428°F, 9 in., Set of 2”. Few listings here put a care claim or a heat limit in the title; this one puts both. In all it answers six of our eight questions: diameter, a spec-table height, carbon steel with a “Nonstick coating”, two pans, the oven limit and the dishwasher line.

428°F is the lowest stated limit on the page, and an unusual number. It converts to 220°C by our arithmetic, a round metric figure, which suggests the rating began in Celsius. It is comfortably above the 325 to 375°F most cakes bake at, so for cake it is not a constraint. It sits below the 450°F of the Wilton pair and the tutikuki and the 550°F of the Fat Daddio’s. The first bullet also names “deep dish pizzas”, and many pizza recipes call for a hotter oven than 428°F, so for that job the ceiling matters.

The care line is a qualified yes. “Dishwasher-safe for quick and convenient cleaning after use. Hand-wash with warm water and mild soap for best results.” That is the same shape of answer as the Chicago Metallic and the EWFEN give: the dishwasher is allowed, the coating lasts longer without it. Against the Wilton pair, which rules the dishwasher out, it is the obvious 9-inch choice for a baker who will not hand wash.

The height comes only from the spec table. No bullet gives a depth. The spec table lists a height of 2.3 inches, a length of 11.0 inches and a width of 9.6 inches. The 11.0 inch figure is wider than any 9-inch pan’s body, so it may include a rim or the packaging; the listing does not say, and the same doubt hangs over the 2.3 inches. If it is the wall, it is the second-tallest figure here after the Nordic Ware’s disputed 2.5 inches, and a 9-inch round at 2.3 inches holds about 10.1 cups brimful by our arithmetic. There is no side-shape answer, so straight sides for stacking are not promised.

The warranty question gets nothing. There is no warranty field. The spec table does give a model, LRC2004, and a release date of 22 October 2025, which makes this the newest listing on the page. That may help explain its rank: #8,415 overall and #19 in Round, the weakest overall rank here.

What to weigh. Sold by Amazon.com, with heat conduction claimed for its “Carbon steel construction”, a figure we cannot check. Next to the Wilton 9 by 2 pair it trades straight sides in writing and bare aluminium for a coating and a dishwasher. If those two matter more to you than side shape and a higher heat limit, it is the 9-inch pair to buy.

Pros

  • One of two matched 9-inch pairs
  • 428°F stated in the title
  • Dishwasher safe, with hand-wash advice
  • Nonstick carbon steel
  • 2.3 in spec-table height
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • 428°F, the lowest stated limit here
  • Height only in the spec table
  • Side shape not stated
  • No warranty stated
  • Weakest overall rank on the page
  • 11.0 in length field unexplained

Best for: Two-layer 9-inch cakes for a baker who wants nonstick and a dishwasher, and bakes at ordinary cake temperatures.

Why We Recommend It

This is the lowest-priced pan on the page, and it gives a warranty that most of the others do not. The spec table says “Limited Lifetime”. Only four listings here give a warranty term, and this is one of them. It answers five of our eight questions in all: diameter, wall height, material, pieces and warranty.

The wall is the joint lowest on the page. The listing says it “Measures 10.75 x 9.7 x 1.6 inches”. Read as length, width and height, that is a 1.6 inch overall height, matched only by the tutikuki’s spec-table figure, against 2 inches on most of the round pans here and 2.5 inches on the Nordic Ware’s bullet. The 10.75 inch figure is presumably the rim, and the 9.7 inch figure the body, but the listing does not say which is which, and it does not give an interior diameter. A 9-inch layer that needs a 2-inch pan will come close to the top of this one. If your recipe fills the pan more than about two-thirds, choose a deeper pan.

The rim is the design feature. “Wide-rim sides make it easy to take in and out of the oven, even while wearing oven mitts”. That is a handling claim, not a side-shape answer; the listing does not say whether the walls are straight or sloped. It also says the pan is “metal spatula safe so you can serve your baked goods right out of the pan”, which is unusual for a nonstick coating and is the reason the bullet suggests pies and other desserts too. For pies specifically, a dedicated dish is often deeper and sloped; our pie dish guide covers those.

The heat and care questions go unanswered. There is no oven limit and no dishwasher line. The coating is described as “SCRATCH-RESISTANT NONSTICK” with “excellent release”, and the steel as “heavy duty steel to resist warping”. Neither tells you how hot it can go or how to clean it. Nonstick coatings generally last longest with hand washing, so treat it that way unless the maker tells you otherwise.

Some fields cannot be used. The spec table weight is about 0.05 pounds, which cannot describe a 9-inch steel pan, so we leave it out. The spec table’s 7.4 by 11.7 by 12.7 inch dimensions look like packaging, not the pan. The part number is 04016 and the model 4016, the same number with and without a leading zero.

What to weigh. Sold by Amazon.com, ranked #1,082 overall but only #31 in Round, which suggests most of its sales are counted somewhere other than the round-pan category. It is a sensible single 9-inch pan if you bake one-layer cakes, brownies or cobblers and want a coating and a warranty. For two-layer 9-inch cakes, you would need two, and the Wilton 9 by 2 pair gives you a deeper wall and stated straight sides.

Pros

  • Limited Lifetime warranty stated
  • Nonstick; metal spatula safe
  • Wide rim for gripping
  • Sold by Amazon.com
  • Best overall rank of the single round pans
  • Simple single 9-inch pan

Cons

  • 1.6 in overall, joint shallowest here
  • No oven limit stated
  • No dishwasher or care line
  • Side shape not stated
  • Interior diameter not given
  • Weight field unusable

Best for: Single-layer 9-inch bakes on a budget, by a buyer who values a warranty term over wall height.

7. Chicago Metallic Professional Nonstick Round Cake Pan Set, 6, 8 and 10 Inch — Best Tiered Set

Three nested dark nonstick round cake pans in graduated sizes

Three diameters in one box, a lifetime limited warranty, and no wall height or heat limit.

Key Specifications

Diameters 6, 8 and 10 in
Wall height Not stated; spec table lists an unlabelled 2.01 in dimension
Side shape Not stated
Material Heavy-weight aluminized steel, nonstick
Pieces 3
Oven limit Not stated
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe; hand washing recommended
Warranty Lifetime limited warranty
Model 5233128
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #1,615 overall; #2 in Round

Why We Recommend It

This is the only set on the page with more than one diameter. “Includes 6 inch, 8 inch, and 10 inch round nonstick cake pans – everything you need to bake stunning tiered cakes”. Every other set here is two or three of the same size. If you want to build a three-tier cake, this is the one box on the page that does it. The title, oddly, ends “Cake Pan Set – 6 Inch”, but the first bullet and the size field, “3-Piece Set (6-Inch, 8-Inch, 10-Inch)”, make the contents clear.

It answers five of our eight questions. Diameters, material, pieces, a care line and a warranty: “Lifetime limited warranty”, in the spec table. The care line is a qualified yes: “dishwasher safe for convenience, though hand washing is recommended to preserve the nonstick coating and extend pan life”. That is an honest answer, and a useful one; it tells you the coating is the part that wears.

The wall height is the big gap. No bullet gives a depth for any of the three pans. The spec table lists a 2.01 inch figure in its width field, next to 10.39 inches for length and height. That may be the depth of the nested set, or of the 10-inch pan, or of the box; the listing does not say, so we do not count it. For tiered cakes, depth matters, because each tier is usually two or more layers and the tiers are meant to line up. Ask the seller before relying on 2 inches.

The material is the professional-bakeware standard. “Constructed from heavy-weight aluminized steel that delivers superior heat conduction and consistent, even baking”. Aluminised steel is steel with an aluminium-silicon coating; it is stiffer than aluminium of the same thickness, which is why the listing can claim it “resists warping and holds its shape bake after bake”. Here it carries a nonstick layer on top, so expect release without lining, and look after the coating.

The three sizes cover a lot of ground. By our arithmetic, the bases are about 28.3, 50.3 and 78.5 square inches, about 157 square inches in all. The 10-inch has more than two and three-quarter times the area of the 6-inch. That spread makes the set useful beyond tiers: the 8-inch alone is a standard layer pan, and the 10-inch suits a larger single cake. No oven limit is stated for any of them, so keep to ordinary cake temperatures until the maker confirms more.

What to weigh. Sold by Amazon.com, ranked #1,615 overall and #2 in Round, behind only the Fat Daddio’s in that category. The manufacturer field names Lifetime Brands Inc., and the model is 5233128. It is the most versatile box on the page; it is also missing two of the numbers a tiered-cake baker most needs, the depth and the heat limit.

Pros

  • Three diameters: 6, 8 and 10 in
  • Lifetime limited warranty stated
  • Dishwasher safe, with honest hand-wash advice
  • Aluminised steel, nonstick
  • #2 in Round
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • No wall height in the bullets
  • No oven limit stated
  • Side shape not stated
  • Title says 6 Inch for a three-size set
  • Coating needs care
  • Depth of each tier unknown

Best for: A baker planning tiered celebration cakes who wants all three sizes from one maker with a warranty.

8. EWFEN 8 Inch Cake Pan Set of 2, Stainless Steel Round Layer Cake Baking Pans — Best Stainless 8-Inch

Two plain stainless steel round cake pans with fixed bases, one set inside the other

Two fixed-bottom stainless 8-inch pans with a dishwasher claim and a refund promise where a warranty would be.

Key Specifications

Diameter 8 Inch; 8.5 in width (spec table)
Wall height 2.0 in (spec table only)
Side shape Not stated
Material Pure stainless steel, uncoated
Pieces 2
Base Fixed bottom, fully enclosed
Oven limit Not stated; “high temperature”
Dishwasher Dishwasher safe; hand-washing recommended
Warranty Not stated; refund or replacement promised
Model BXGDGP-002
Seller EWFEN US
Best Sellers Rank #2,433 overall; #4 in Round

Why We Recommend It

This is the stainless alternative to the Fat Daddio’s 8-inch pair. Same diameter, same count, a different metal and a much thinner set of answers. It answers five of our eight questions: an 8-inch size, a 2.0 inch height, stainless steel, two pans, and a care line, “They’re dishwasher safe, however hand-washing is recommended to extend product life”.

The height comes only from the spec table. No bullet gives a depth. The spec table lists a height of 2.0 inches, a length of 2.0 inches and a width of 8.5 inches, so one of its fields is clearly not a pan dimension. We count the 2.0 inch height because it agrees with the usual 8 by 2 format, but it is the weakest wall-height answer we counted. The 8.5 inch width is presumably the outer diameter with the rim.

The base is the selling point. “The cake pans set have a fixed bottom and are fully enclosed all around, unlike cake pans with removable bottoms that can leak cake liquid”. That is a fair contrast with a springform or loose-base pan, though every round layer pan on this page has a fixed base. The listing also says “Leak-proof” in its title, which is the same point.

It tells you to line it. The heat bullet says the pans give “even baking and effortless layering for stunning stacked cakes at high temperature”, then “recommend using the matching nonstick parchment paper on the pan before baking, which can effectively reduce food sticking”. That is honest. Uncoated stainless steel holds on to cake batter, and parchment is the usual fix. There is no oven figure; “high temperature” is not one.

The warranty question is answered with a different promise. “If you’re not completely satisfied simply let us know and we will offer a prompt refund or replacement, no questions asked.” That is a satisfaction guarantee with no stated time limit, not a warranty term, so we do not count it. It may be worth more or less than a written warranty depending on how the seller honours it, and the listing does not say for how long it applies.

Its copy matches the E-far set. The two listings share whole phrases, from “No harmful chemicals leaching into food” to “Not as the springform, Easy to clean up and dishwasher safe & pot safe” and the list of uses. EWFEN gives model BXGDGP-002; E-far gives no model. Different sizes, different brand names, and no model number to match, so the listings do not show them to be the same product. Ranked #2,433 overall and #4 in Round, sold by EWFEN US, with a listed weight of about 1.28 pounds.

Pros

  • Dishwasher safe, with hand-wash advice
  • Fixed, fully enclosed bottom
  • Uncoated stainless: no coating to wear
  • Model number listed
  • Refund or replacement promise
  • #4 in Round

Cons

  • Wall height only in the spec table
  • No oven figure
  • Side shape not stated
  • Parchment recommended to reduce sticking
  • No warranty term
  • Sold by EWFEN US, not Amazon.com

Best for: A baker who wants coating-free 8-inch pans that can go in the dishwasher and does not mind lining them.

9. Nordic Ware Naturals Round Cake Pan, 8-Inch — Best Single 8-Inch

A single plain natural aluminium round cake pan with a rolled rim on a white background

A natural aluminium 8-inch pan with a lifetime warranty and two different heights in one listing.

Key Specifications

Diameter 8 in interior; 8.6 in exterior
Wall height 2.5 in (bullet); 2.125 in (spec table)
Side shape Not stated
Material Natural aluminum, uncoated; encapsulated rims
Pieces 1
Oven limit Not stated
Dishwasher Not stated
Warranty Lifetime Warranty
Made in America, of domestic and imported materials
Model 46800AMZ
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #2,518 overall; #5 in Round

Why We Recommend It

This listing gives the tallest round-pan wall on the page, and then gives a second, shorter one. The bullet: “Pan exterior diameter 8.6 inches, it measures 2.5 inches in height and an interior diameter of 8 inches.” The spec table: height 2.125 inches. That is a difference of three-eighths of an inch on a pan that is only a couple of inches deep. If the bullet is right, this is the deepest round layer pan here; if the spec table is right, it is a standard 2-inch-class pan with a rolled rim. The listing does not resolve it, so we report both.

It answers five of our eight questions. Diameter, height, material, pieces and a “Lifetime Warranty” in the spec table, backed by a bullet that says the pans are “made to withstand a lifetime of use in your home kitchen”. It is one of four listings with a warranty term. What it leaves out is side shape, an oven limit and any care instruction at all.

Natural aluminium is the classic cake-pan metal. “Natural aluminum’s superior heat conductivity ensures consistent, evenly browned results every time you bake”. The pan is uncoated, so grease and line it. The rims are “encapsulated”, rolled around a stiffening core, “to prevent warping”, and the listing adds “will not rust”. It calls these “professional grade pans” for “home kitchens and bakeries alike”.

The care silence matters more than usual here. Bare aluminium is the material most likely to dull or darken in a dishwasher, which is why Wilton’s uncoated pair says plainly that it is not dishwasher safe. This listing says nothing either way. Treat it as hand wash only until Nordic Ware tells you otherwise; the lifetime warranty may not cover a finish changed by detergent, and the listing does not say.

The origin claim is careful. “Made in America of domestic and imported materials.” It is the only listing on the page with a country-of-manufacture statement, and its wording is precise: the pan is made in the United States, not every material in it.

What to weigh. Sold by Amazon.com, ranked #2,518 overall and #5 in Round, with a listed weight of 0.7 pounds. It is a single pan, so a two-layer cake means buying two. The model, 46800AMZ, suggests an Amazon-specific version. If you want one well-made uncoated 8-inch pan with a lifetime warranty, it fits; if you want to know the depth for certain, ask first.

Pros

  • Lifetime Warranty stated
  • Natural aluminium, uncoated
  • Encapsulated rims against warping
  • Interior and exterior diameter given
  • Made in America, stated
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Height given as 2.5 in and 2.125 in
  • No oven limit stated
  • No care or dishwasher line
  • Side shape not stated
  • Single pan: buy two for layers
  • Grease or line it

Best for: A buyer who wants one uncoated 8-inch aluminium pan, made in America, with a lifetime warranty.

10. Sur La Table Kitchen Essentials Bake Sale 9 Inch Nonstick Round Cake Pan, Linen White — Best Statement Exterior

A single round cake pan with a cream-white exterior and a dark nonstick interior

A white 9-inch carbon steel pan whose listing answers three of our eight questions.

Key Specifications

Diameter 9 in
Wall height Not stated (height field reads 0.0 in)
Side shape Not stated
Material Carbon steel, nonstick; PFOA, PFAS and PTFE free
Pieces 1
Oven limit Not stated
Dishwasher Not stated
Warranty Not stated
Colour Linen White exterior
Model 141169.01
Seller Amazon.com
Best Sellers Rank #4,045 overall; #55 in Round

Why We Recommend It

This is the least-answered listing on the page. It gives a diameter, “one 9-inch carbon steel cake pan”, a material and a count. That is three of our eight questions, and they are the three every listing answers. Wall height, side shape, oven limit, dishwasher and warranty all go unstated. The spec table’s height field reads 0.0 inches, which cannot describe a cake pan, so we leave it out.

What it does say is about the coating. The title makes the claim: “PFOA, PFAS, PTFE Free Nonstick”. The bullets add “NONSTICK INTERIOR: ensures easy cleanup and exceptional food release” and “CARBON STEEL BAKEWARE: ideal for uniform heat conduction and distribution to bake and brown evenly”. It is one of three listings that make a PFAS-free claim, with the Fat Daddio’s and the Wilton pair, and one of two, with the Fat Daddio’s, that name PTFE as well. It does not say what the coating is instead.

The colour is the reason to buy it. “VIBRANT EXTERIOR: colorful pieces inspire creativity in any kitchen”, and this one is “Linen White”. If a cake pan lives on open shelving or goes to the table, that counts for something. It is not a performance claim, and the listing does not say whether the exterior finish is affected by oven heat or a dishwasher.

The missing height matters most for a 9-inch pan. A 9-inch layer recipe written for a 2-inch pan needs a 2-inch wall; on the GoodCook, the only other single 9-inch pan, the overall height is 1.6 inches. Without a figure, you cannot tell which this is. A bullet also spends its space on brand copy, “HAPPINESS IS HOMEMADE”, that could have carried a depth.

The heat question is open too. Nonstick coatings, including PTFE-free ones, usually set a pan’s heat ceiling. No figure is given, so keep it to ordinary baking temperatures until the maker confirms more.

What to weigh. Sold by Amazon.com, made for Sur La Table by Gibson Overseas, Inc., according to the manufacturer field, model 141169.01. It ranks #4,045 overall and #55 in Round; only the Amazon Basics ranks lower overall, and nothing here ranks lower in Round. If you like the look and bake single 9-inch layers, it does the job a 9-inch pan does; if you want answers, every other pan here gives more.

Pros

  • PFOA, PFAS and PTFE free nonstick, stated
  • Carbon steel body
  • Linen White exterior for display
  • Model number listed
  • Sold by Amazon.com
  • Single 9-inch pan

Cons

  • Answers three of eight questions
  • No wall height; height field reads zero
  • No oven limit
  • No dishwasher or care line
  • No warranty stated
  • Weakest Round rank here, #55

Best for: A baker who wants a good-looking single 9-inch nonstick pan and is content to ask the seller for the rest.

Eight Questions, Fifty-Five Answers

The whole page rests on one count. For each listing we asked the same eight questions and recorded an answer only where the listing gave one in words or figures. The table below is our count; a dash means the listing does not answer, and the notes explain the borderline calls.

Pan Diameter Wall Sides Material Pieces Oven limit Dishwasher Warranty Total
Fat Daddio’s 8 x 2 8 in 2 in — Anodised aluminium 2 550°F Hand wash rec. Lifetime Seven

Sur La Table 9-inch 9 in — — Nonstick carbon steel 1 — — — Three
Answered 10 8 2 10 10 4 7 4 55 of 80

The easy three are answered by everyone. Diameter, material and piece count are 30 answers out of 30. They are also the three a shopper can usually see from the title and the photo, which is why they are always there.

The deciding five collect 25 answers out of 50. Wall height leads with eight, and four of those are soft: the EWFEN, the tutikuki and the Amazon Basics give a height only in a spec table, the EWFEN’s next to a 2.0 inch length that cannot be the pan’s, and the Nordic Ware gives two different figures. Dishwasher gets seven, oven limit four, warranty four, and side shape just two. By our count, a shopper choosing between two of these pans on anything other than size, metal and count will find the comparison blank half the time.

Where the answers cluster. The four oven limits come from the Fat Daddio’s, the Wilton pair, the tutikuki and the Amazon Basics, and every one of those listings answers at least six questions. The two side-shape answers come from the Wilton pair and the E-far set. The four warranty terms come from Fat Daddio’s, GoodCook, Chicago Metallic and Nordic Ware, and none of those four says anything about side shape. Only the Fat Daddio’s pairs a warranty term with an oven limit.

Rank and completeness meet at the top, and nowhere else. The Fat Daddio’s answers the most questions and holds the best overall rank, #876, and #1 in Round. The other seven-answer listing, the Wilton pair, sits at #2,890. Below that the order is mixed: the six-answer Amazon Basics has the weakest overall rank on the page, #8,415, while the three-answer Sur La Table sits at #4,045. Shoppers are not consistently rewarding listings for answering more, so you have to do the asking yourself.

A round strawberry-topped cake on a blue plate
A 2-inch pan filled halfway to two-thirds is what most layer recipes expect, and what these listings offer.

Two Inches, Give or Take, and Never Three

Wall height is the answer most often given after the easy three. No listing on the page states a 3-inch wall. The figures below are as listed; the base areas and brim volumes are our arithmetic, assuming straight walls.

Pan Diameter Wall as listed Base area (ours) Brim volume per pan (ours) Pans
E-far 6 in inner 2 in About 28.3 sq in About 3.9 cups 3
Fat Daddio’s 8 in interior 2 in About 50.3 sq in About 7.0 cups (3.5 cups stated capacity) 2
EWFEN 8 in 2.0 in (spec table) About 50.3 sq in About 7.0 cups 2
tutikuki 8 in 1.6 in (spec table) About 50.3 sq in About 5.6 cups 3
Nordic Ware 8 in interior 2.5 in or 2.125 in About 50.3 sq in About 7.4 to 8.7 cups 1
Wilton round 9 in 2 in About 63.6 sq in About 8.8 cups 2
Amazon Basics 9 in 2.3 in (spec table) About 63.6 sq in About 10.1 cups 2
GoodCook 9 in (9.7 in body) 1.6 in overall About 63.6 sq in at 9 in About 7.0 cups at 9 in 1
Chicago Metallic 6, 8, 10 in Not stated About 28.3, 50.3, 78.5 sq in — 3
Sur La Table 9 in Not stated About 63.6 sq in — 1

The band runs from 1.6 to 2.5 inches. The deepest figure is the Nordic Ware’s 2.5 inches, and its own spec table disputes it. The Amazon Basics’ 2.3 inches comes from a spec table that also lists an 11.0 inch length no 9-inch pan body could have, so it may include a rim. At the shallow end, the GoodCook and the tutikuki both come in at 1.6 inches. If your recipe calls for a 3-inch round, for a tall single cake or a cheesecake baked in a water bath, none of these ten promises it, and a springform is often the better choice; see our springform pan roundup.

Two inches is enough for most layer recipes, if you match the diameter. The common guidance is to fill a layer pan about half to two-thirds full. On a 2-inch wall that is 1 to about 1.3 inches of batter, which rises to fill the pan. The Fat Daddio’s stated 3.5 cups per pan is about half its brim volume by our arithmetic, consistent with that guidance. Pour a 9-inch recipe into 8-inch pans and you add about 27% more depth of batter, by our arithmetic, which is where overflows start.

The shallow pans need care with full recipes. At 1.6 inches, the GoodCook and the tutikuki leave the least headroom on the page. For one-layer cakes, brownies and cobblers that is fine. For a recipe that fills a 2-inch pan two-thirds, it is close to the top, and the tutikuki holds about a fifth less than an 8 by 2 pan when brimful, by our arithmetic.

Straight Sides, Said Twice

Side shape decides whether layers stack without a step, and it is the question answered least often. Two listings say straight. None says sloped. Eight say nothing.

  • Wilton 9 x 2 pair: “straight sides to make it easy for the batter to rise, creating tall cake layers with clean, straight edges, perfect for decorating”.
  • E-far 6-inch set: “Straight-sided design for making stacked cakes easily”.

The silence is not random. The Fat Daddio’s and the Chicago Metallic both sell themselves for tiered cakes, which usually need straight walls, and neither says straight. The EWFEN promises “effortless layering for stunning stacked cakes”, the tutikuki “beautiful large wedding cakes” and the Amazon Basics “layered cakes”, and none of the three describes its walls. Stacking claims without a side-shape answer leave the buyer to trust the photo. A slight slope is common on stamped pans because it helps them nest and release, and on a tall stacked cake even a small slope shows as a ridge that has to be trimmed or filled with frosting.

How to check. Look for a top and a bottom diameter, or a statement in words. The Fat Daddio’s gives an interior of 8 inches and an overall of 9, the Nordic Ware 8 inches inside and 8.6 outside, and the E-far 6 inside and 6½ outside, but none of those pairs is a top-versus-bottom measurement; they are inside versus outside the rim. No listing on the page gives a base diameter and a top diameter, which is the only measurement that would settle the question.

Four Heat Limits, Six Blanks

Oven limit gets four answers. Fat Daddio’s says 550°F. The Wilton pair and the tutikuki say 450°F. The Amazon Basics says 428°F. Everything else is blank, or an adjective: “high temperature” on the EWFEN.

Material group Pans Oven limits stated Dishwasher answers
Uncoated aluminium (bare or anodised) Fat Daddio’s, Wilton round, Nordic Ware 550°F; 450°F; not stated Hand wash rec.; not safe; not stated
Nonstick steel (carbon, aluminised or plain) tutikuki, Amazon Basics, GoodCook, Chicago Metallic, Sur La Table 450°F; 428°F; three not stated Safe (title); safe with hand wash advice; not stated; safe with hand wash rec.; not stated
Uncoated stainless steel E-far, EWFEN None of two Safe; safe with hand wash rec.

Three of the five nonstick steel pans give no heat figure. That is the group where a figure would matter most, because a nonstick coating usually sets the ceiling, not the metal underneath. For ordinary cake baking, in the 325 to 375°F range, it is unlikely to come up. For a pan you also plan to use for deep-dish pizza or a hot roast, ask first, and note that the one nonstick pair with a figure, the Amazon Basics, stops at 428°F.

The stainless pans need a limit least and give a dishwasher answer most. Both say dishwasher safe; neither says how hot. Uncoated stainless has no coating to fail at baking temperatures, so the practical risk is low, though the listings still leave it open.

For reference, by our conversion, 428°F is about 220°C, 450°F about 232°C and 550°F about 288°C. Fat Daddio’s itself prints 285°C.

Two Stainless Sets, One Script

The E-far and EWFEN listings read like two drafts of the same document. We compared their model numbers and their copy field by field.

They are not the same model on paper. One lists a model number and the other lists none, so there is nothing to match, and they are different sizes and counts. We cannot say from the listings whether the two brands share a factory or simply share a copywriter. What the shared text does tell you is that the claims in it, the even heating, the chemical-free steel, are generic sales copy rather than measurements of either pan. Judge the two on the fields that differ: the E-far states straight sides, the EWFEN states a hand-wash preference and a refund promise.

No other pair on the page shares a model number. The Wilton pair is 191003076 and the Amazon Basics LRC2004. The GoodCook lists part 04016 and model 4016, the same number written two ways. The Fat Daddio’s model field, “PRD-PARENT”, is a listing placeholder, and the tutikuki lists no model at all.

What the Step Up Buys

Without prices to compare, the meaningful tiers on this page are material, completeness and cover.

From nonstick steel to uncoated aluminium. The five nonstick steel pans, tutikuki, Amazon Basics, GoodCook, Chicago Metallic and Sur La Table, release easily, and two of the five give a heat limit. The uncoated aluminium pans, Fat Daddio’s, Wilton round and Nordic Ware, need greasing and lining, but two of three give a limit and two of three a warranty term, and there is no coating to wear. Aluminium is also the metal the bakery trade leans on for even heat.

From silence to a written warranty. Four listings give a term: Fat Daddio’s Lifetime, Nordic Ware Lifetime, Chicago Metallic lifetime limited and GoodCook Limited Lifetime. The Wilton pair has a warranty field with no term. EWFEN gives a refund promise. E-far, tutikuki, Amazon Basics and Sur La Table give nothing. If a pan is meant to last decades, that is the step that buys it on paper.

From single pans to matched sets. A layer cake needs at least two identical pans. The Fat Daddio’s, Wilton round, Amazon Basics and EWFEN come as pairs, the E-far and tutikuki as threes, and the Chicago Metallic as three graduated sizes. The GoodCook, Nordic Ware and Sur La Table are single pans, so a two-layer cake means buying twice.

From 8 inches to 9. About 27% more base area by our arithmetic. Two listings give you matched 9-inch pairs: the Wilton, with a stated 2-inch wall and straight sides, and the Amazon Basics, with a 2.3 inch spec-table height, a coating and a dishwasher claim.

What to Check Before You Buy

Match the Diameter to Your Recipes

Eight- and 9-inch layer recipes are not interchangeable. A 9-inch base has about 27% more area than an 8-inch, by our arithmetic, so batter for two 9-inch layers poured into 8-inch pans sits deeper and may overflow, while 8-inch batter in 9-inch pans bakes thin. Here, the 8-inch options are Fat Daddio’s, tutikuki, EWFEN and Nordic Ware; the 9-inch options are Wilton round, Amazon Basics, GoodCook and Sur La Table.

Find the Wall Height, and Distrust a Single Field

Eight of ten listings give a wall height, and four of those are shaky. Three appear only in a spec table, and the Nordic Ware’s bullet and spec table disagree by three-eighths of an inch. Look for a height in a bullet, and check that the spec table does not give a length no pan of that size could have.

Ask Whether the Sides Are Straight

Only two listings say. For stacked and frosted cakes, straight sides save trimming and give clean edges. If a listing sells itself for tiers or wedding cakes but does not say straight, ask the seller for a base and a top diameter.

Choose the Metal for the Way You Clean

Uncoated aluminium wants hand washing; Wilton says plainly that its pair is not dishwasher safe. Nonstick wants gentle cleaning; Chicago Metallic and Amazon Basics allow the dishwasher but recommend hand washing for the coating’s sake. Stainless steel is the dishwasher-friendly option here, at the cost of slower heating and a need for parchment, which EWFEN itself recommends.

Look for an Oven Limit if You Will Use It for More Than Cake

Four listings give one: 550°F on the Fat Daddio’s, 450°F on the Wilton pair and the tutikuki, and 428°F on the Amazon Basics. For cakes, any of them is plenty. For deep-dish pizza, roasting or a hot toaster oven, a stated figure is worth having, and higher is better.

Count the Pans in the Box

Two layers need two pans, three tiers need three sizes. Check the count in the title and the size field, not only the photo: the Chicago Metallic’s title says “6 Inch” for a set of three sizes, and the tutikuki’s item-count field reads 0 for a set of three. Plan a cooling rack big enough for every layer at once; our cooling rack roundup covers sizes.

Read the Warranty Field, Not Just Its Existence

A field that says “Warranty” is not a warranty term. Four listings here give a term; one gives the word alone; one gives a refund promise; four give nothing. If cover matters to you, buy from the four, or ask the seller in writing.

Common Mistakes

  • Expecting a 3-inch round. No listing here states a 3-inch wall; the stated figures run from 1.6 to 2.5 inches.
  • Trusting a spec-table height alone. The EWFEN, tutikuki and Amazon Basics give a wall height only in the spec table, and two of those tables list a length that cannot be the pan body alone.
  • Swapping 8-inch and 9-inch pans freely. A 9-inch base has about 27% more area by our arithmetic, so batter depth and baking time both change.
  • Assuming stacking claims mean straight sides. Five listings sell for tiers, stacking or layers without saying straight; only two pans here state it.
  • Putting bare aluminium in the dishwasher. Wilton’s 9 x 2 pair says not dishwasher safe; the Nordic Ware says nothing, so hand wash it too.
  • Reading “high temperature” as a limit. The EWFEN uses the phrase; four listings give a figure, from 428 to 550°F.
  • Counting a warranty field as a warranty. Wilton’s field says only “Warranty”; four listings give an actual term.
  • Treating shared copy as two confirmations. E-far and EWFEN share whole sentences; the claims in them are one script, not two measurements.

Who Should Buy Which

Buy the Fat Daddio’s 8 x 2 pair if you want the most complete listing on the page. Seven answers, including a 550°F limit, 16-gauge anodised aluminium, a stated capacity and a lifetime warranty, and the best rank here, #1 in Round. Accept that it does not say straight sides, recommends hand washing and is 8-inch only.

Buy the Wilton 9 x 2 pair if your recipes are 9-inch and you stack and frost. One of two matched 9-inch pairs, and the only one with straight sides and a 2-inch wall stated in its bullets, plus 450°F. Accept hand washing and a warranty field with no term.

Buy the tutikuki set if you want three 8-inch layers and liners in one box. Three pans, 100 parchment papers, 450°F and handles. Accept a 1.6 inch spec-table height you should confirm, no side-shape answer and no warranty.

Buy the E-far set if you bake small cakes and want the dishwasher. Three straight-sided 6-inch stainless pans, dishwasher safe. Accept no oven limit, no warranty and no model number.

Buy the Amazon Basics pair if you want 9-inch nonstick pans that go in the dishwasher. Two pans, 428°F and dishwasher safe in the title, sold by Amazon.com. Accept the lowest stated limit here, a spec-table-only height and no side-shape or warranty answer.

Buy the GoodCook if you want one budget 9-inch pan with a warranty. Nonstick, metal spatula safe, limited lifetime warranty. Accept a 1.6 inch overall height and no oven or care line.

Buy the Chicago Metallic set if you are building tiers. Six, 8 and 10 inches, aluminised steel, nonstick, lifetime limited warranty, dishwasher safe with a hand-wash recommendation. Ask the seller for the wall height first.

Buy the EWFEN pair if you want coating-free 8-inch pans for the dishwasher. Fixed bottoms, stainless, a refund promise. Plan to line them with parchment, as the listing itself suggests.

Buy the Nordic Ware if one uncoated 8-inch pan with a lifetime warranty is the goal. Natural aluminium, encapsulated rims, made in America. Accept two different heights and no care line.

Buy the Sur La Table only if the white exterior matters. PFOA, PFAS and PTFE free nonstick on carbon steel, single 9-inch. Accept that the listing answers three of eight questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best cake pan?

For most bakers, the Fat Daddio’s Anodized Aluminum Round Cake Pans, a set of two 8 by 2 inch pans. Of the eight questions we put to ten listings, diameter, wall height, side shape, material, pieces, oven limit, dishwasher and warranty, it answers seven, more completely than anyone else. It states 16-gauge anodised aluminium with a solid bottom, the highest oven limit on the page at 550°F, a capacity of 3.5 cups per pan and a lifetime warranty, and it holds the best rank here, #1 in Round. The one thing it does not say is whether the sides are straight, though it is sold for tiered and layered cakes. If your recipes are written for 9-inch pans, the Wilton Aluminum Round Cake Pan Set is the equivalent pick: two 9 by 2 inch pans, straight sides stated, 450°F, hand wash only. Both are uncoated aluminium, so grease and line them.

What is the best round cake pan?

The Fat Daddio’s 8 by 2 inch pair and the Wilton 9 by 2 inch pair tie on completeness, each answering seven of our eight questions, so choose by diameter. The Fat Daddio’s wins on heat limit, 550°F against 450°F, and on cover, with a lifetime warranty where Wilton’s warranty field has no term. The Wilton wins on side shape, because it actually says straight sides, which matters when stacking and frosting; only one other listing here, the E-far 6-inch set, says the same. If you want a single round pan rather than a pair, the Nordic Ware Naturals 8-inch is uncoated natural aluminium with a lifetime warranty, though its listing gives two different heights, 2.5 and 2.125 inches. If you want nonstick and a dishwasher, the Amazon Basics 9-inch pair says both in its title, with a lower 428°F limit and no side-shape answer.

What is the best 9 inch cake pan?

For two-layer cakes, the Wilton Aluminum Round Cake Pan Set, 9 x 2 inches. Its listing gives the 2-inch wall, the straight sides, the 450°F limit and a plain care instruction, hand wash and not dishwasher safe. The other matched 9-inch pair is the Amazon Basics nonstick carbon steel set: oven-safe to 428°F, dishwasher safe with hand washing advised for best results, and a 2.3 inch height that appears only in its spec table. Choose the Wilton for straight sides and bare aluminium, the Amazon Basics for a coating and a dishwasher. Two single 9-inch pans are here too. The GoodCook Everyday carries a limited lifetime warranty and is metal spatula safe, but its overall height is only 1.6 inches. The Sur La Table Bake Sale pan has a PFOA, PFAS and PTFE free coating and a white exterior, but no stated wall height at all.

What is the best cake pan set?

It depends on whether you want matching layers or graduated tiers. For matching layers, the Fat Daddio’s 8-inch pair answers the most questions, seven of eight, and the Wilton 9-inch pair is the matched 9-inch alternative. For three layers at once, the tutikuki set gives three 8-inch nonstick pans, 100 parchment papers and a 450°F limit, though its only wall height is a 1.6 inch spec-table figure. For tiers, the Chicago Metallic Professional set is the only box here with three different diameters, 6, 8 and 10 inches, in nonstick aluminised steel with a lifetime limited warranty; its listing gives no wall height, so confirm depth first. For small cakes, the E-far set gives three straight-sided 6-inch stainless pans, and the EWFEN two 8-inch stainless pans with fixed bottoms. Neither stainless set gives an oven limit or a warranty term, and the two share most of their sales copy.

Should a cake pan be 2 or 3 inches deep?

For most layer recipes, 2 inches. Recipes for 8- and 9-inch layers are usually written for 2-inch pans filled about half to two-thirds full, and that is where most pans on this page sit. None of the ten states a 3-inch wall. The tallest figures are the Nordic Ware’s 2.5 inches, which its own spec table puts at 2.125, and the Amazon Basics’ 2.3 inches, from a spec table alone. A 3-inch round is useful for taller single cakes, cheesecakes and some tiered work, and if you need one, a springform is often the better tool. Do not go much below 2 inches for layers, either: the GoodCook’s 1.6 inch overall height and the tutikuki’s 1.6 inch spec-table figure leave little headroom, and a brimful 8-inch round at 1.6 inches holds about a fifth less than an 8 by 2, by our arithmetic.

Is aluminium, steel or stainless steel better for cake pans?

Each has a trade-off, and the listings here show them. Aluminium, bare or anodised, is the traditional cake-pan metal because it spreads heat quickly and evenly; the Fat Daddio’s, Wilton round and Nordic Ware are uncoated aluminium and need greasing and lining, and two of the three give an oven limit. Steel pans here all carry a nonstick coating: carbon steel on the tutikuki, Amazon Basics and Sur La Table, aluminised steel on the Chicago Metallic and plain steel on the GoodCook. They release easily, but only two of the five give an oven limit, and the coating needs gentle cleaning. Stainless steel, on the E-far and EWFEN sets, is the dishwasher-friendly option with no coating to wear, but it heats less readily than aluminium and sticks more; EWFEN itself recommends parchment. For layer cakes, uncoated aluminium is the safe default.

Can cake pans go in the dishwasher?

Seven of the ten listings answer, and the answers vary by material. The E-far stainless set says dishwasher safe, and the tutikuki says so in its title, though its cleaning bullet only mentions wiping with warm water. The EWFEN stainless set, the Chicago Metallic nonstick set and the Amazon Basics nonstick pair all say dishwasher safe but recommend hand washing, to extend product life, to preserve the coating or for best results. The Fat Daddio’s anodised pans say hand wash recommended. The Wilton 9 by 2 aluminium pair says plainly not dishwasher safe, and asks you to dry it with a soft cloth. The GoodCook, Nordic Ware and Sur La Table listings say nothing. As a rule, bare aluminium tends to dull or darken in a dishwasher and nonstick coatings last longer washed by hand, so where a listing is silent, wash by hand.

Do cake pans need straight sides?

For stacked, frosted layer cakes, straight sides help. Each layer comes out the same diameter top and bottom, so the stack has clean vertical edges and needs less trimming. A sloped pan leaves a slightly narrower base on each layer, which shows as a step when layers are stacked. For a single-layer cake served from the pan, it matters much less. On this page, only two listings say straight: the Wilton 9 by 2 pair and the E-far 6-inch set. None says sloped. The Fat Daddio’s, Chicago Metallic, EWFEN, tutikuki and Amazon Basics all sell themselves for tiered, stacked, wedding or layered cakes without stating side shape. If straight sides matter to you, buy the Wilton or the E-far, or ask the seller for the top and base diameters before buying any of the others.

Best Tiered SetChicago Metallic Professional Nonstick Round Cake Pan Set

Six, 8 and 10 inches in nonstick aluminised steel, with a lifetime limited warranty; ask for the wall height.

Ten round cake pan listings, eight questions, 55 answers out of 80. Every listing gives its diameter, its material and its count. After that, wall height gets eight answers, dishwasher seven, oven limit four, warranty four and side shape two. No listing answers all eight; the Fat Daddio’s and the Wilton 9 by 2 pair come closest, at seven each.

The heights sit in a tight band. No listing states a 3-inch wall, and the stated figures run from 1.6 to 2.5 inches, with most at 2. Four of the eight height answers are soft: three sit only in a spec table and one contradicts itself. If you came looking for a deep round, it is not here. If you came for a layer pan, 2 inches matched to your recipe’s diameter is what these listings offer, and it is what most recipes expect.

The two stainless sets are a warning about copy. E-far and EWFEN share whole sentences and list no common model number. Repeated claims are not extra evidence. Judge each pan on the fields that differ, and on the questions it actually answers.

So buy a cake pan by its answers, and ask for the missing ones. Match the diameter to your recipes, find a wall height in a bullet rather than only a spec table, look for straight sides in words if you stack, and read the warranty field rather than its title.

If you buy one cake pan set from this page, make it the Fat Daddio’s 8 by 2 inch pair: seven answers, the highest stated oven limit at 550°F, 16-gauge anodised aluminium, a lifetime warranty and the best rank here. If your recipes are 9-inch, take the Wilton 9 by 2 pair instead; if you are building tiers, the Chicago Metallic set gives you three sizes in one box.
