Start with what this page is not. Every toaster below is a new machine, built recently and sold new. None is an antique, a restored mid-century chrome toaster or a second-hand find. “Vintage” and “retro” here describe a look: rounded shoulders, a short lever, a bright or creamy colour, sometimes a chrome base. If you want a genuine 1950s toaster, you want an antiques dealer. If you want a new toaster that looks like one, these are the ten we compared, all in stock on amazon.com on 5 October 2026.
The listings sell the look in so many words. SMEG calls the TSF01 “50’s Retro Style”. Both Mueller listings promise “1950s styling”. Keenstone says its toaster “looks like it belongs in a 1950s diner”. Both Nostalgia models put “Vintage Design” in the title. So the styling is a given. The useful question is what sits under it: what the shell is made of, how you set the shade, how wide the slots are, and which modern functions come along with the old-fashioned face.
The shell is the first place the story thins out. Four listings state a stainless steel body or casing outright: the Roter Mond (“18/8 stainless steel casing”), the Keenstone (“Rounded stainless steel body”), the Culinaid (“stainless steel body”) and the BUYDEEM (“Retro Stainless Steel Toaster” in its title). SMEG says “steel body and polished chrome base”, which is steel, not stainless. The Nostalgia Classic Retro says “Enamel Coated Steel Body”, the only listing that says how its colour gets onto the metal. The Aigostar and both Muellers use looser wording, and the Nostalgia Retro Wide names no housing material at all. No listing says plastic.
The controls are where the retro look and the spec sheet part company. A turned dial is the most old-fashioned control a toaster can have, and only four of the ten name one for the shade: the Nostalgia Classic Retro, the Roter Mond, the Culinaid and the Aigostar. The other six give a number of shade levels and do not say how you choose between them, the SMEG included. Meanwhile the modern functions are everywhere. All ten list defrost. Nine list cancel; the SMEG does not mention it. Eight list a bagel setting; both Muellers leave it out. Seven list reheat. Three say their buttons light up.
Shade levels and slot widths are close together. Shade settings run from 5 on the Nostalgia Retro Wide to 7 on the two Muellers and the BUYDEEM; six of the ten have six. Only the Roter Mond turns its levels into times, 70 to 220 seconds. Six listings print a slot width, and they fall between 1.4 inches on the SMEG and 1.6 inches on the Aigostar. The two Nostalgias say “extra-wide” without a number, and the Muellers say only that their slots are self-centring.
Colour is the reason most people shop this category, and each listing names exactly one. The ten captured here come in matte black, red, cream, orange, turquoise, black, white, yellow, cream white and orange. Culinaid says its toaster “comes in a variety of colors” and Mueller says “Choose your hue”, but neither names the others. Check the colour selector on the product page before you assume the shade you want exists for the model you want.
So this guide sorts the ten by what each listing states beneath the styling: housing material, shade control, slot width and functions, with the conflicts and silences reported as they are. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup; popularity below is Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank only, and conveniently all ten sit in the same Toasters category.
All ten were captured on 5 October 2026. Their Toasters ranks run from #21 to #156, and the best-ranked of them, the Keenstone, is one of the four that state a stainless body.

Best Sellers Ranks and specifications are taken from each manufacturer’s Amazon listing as displayed on 5 October 2026 through a United States connection, and may change. Housing is recorded in each listing’s own words. “Stainless body” means the listing says the body or casing is stainless steel; the Aigostar and Mueller wording is quoted because it does not say that plainly. No listing on this page states a plastic housing, and none says how the colour is applied except the Nostalgia Classic Retro (enamel coating) and the Keenstone (a “vintage white finish”). “Control type not stated” means the listing gives a number of shade levels but does not say whether you set them with a dial, a knob, a slider or buttons. Slot depth appears only where the listing gives it. Ranks are as returned on 5 October 2026; overall ranks run from #3,472 (Keenstone) to #50,214 (Mueller turquoise) and are given in the detail cards. Four toasters were sold by Amazon.com at capture; the other six by their brands or third-party sellers. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for any product here.

How We Chose These Ten
We researched current listings, compared manufacturer specifications and documentation, and read each listing’s claims about its housing, its controls, its slots and its functions line by line. We did not carry out hands-on testing, and nothing below is presented as measured performance data. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup. We used Amazon Best Sellers Rank, buy-box stock and listing specifications instead, and nothing on this page describes or implies how owners have scored these toasters.
- New retro-styled toasters only — every product here is a new pop-up toaster sold with retro or vintage styling in its title or bullets. Antiques, refurbished units and second-hand listings were not in the running, and neither were toaster ovens.
- Housing recorded exactly as printed — “stainless steel casing”, “steel body”, “enamel coated steel body” or the looser phrases some listings use. Where a listing names no material, we say so. We do not infer a material from a photograph or a colour.
- Controls as described — a dial or knob is logged only where the listing names one. A shade count with no stated control is logged as just that. Lighted or LED buttons are logged where stated.
- Functions counted from the bullets — bagel, defrost, reheat, cancel and anything extra, counted once each even where a listing names one twice.
- Slot width as a number or not at all — “extra-wide” without a figure is recorded as not stated. Where a listing gives slot depth, we report it. Metric conversions and footprint areas on this page are our arithmetic.
- No build-quality or durability claims of our own — where a listing claims rust resistance or long life, we quote it as a claim. Nothing on this page tells you how long any of these toasters will last.
- Popularity from Best Sellers Rank only — ranks are quoted exactly as returned on 5 October 2026. All ten sit in Amazon’s Toasters category, so their category ranks can be compared directly, though ranks move constantly.
- Verified stock and seller — each product was the buy-box offer and in stock on amazon.com on 5 October 2026.

The Ten Retro Toasters in Detail
1. Keenstone 2 Slice Toaster, Retro Stainless Steel, White (WT-330) — Best Overall

The best-selling retro toaster on the page states a stainless body, a slot width and four functions.
Key Specifications
| Housing | Rounded stainless steel body; “vintage white finish” |
|---|---|
| Food-contact steel | 18/8 food-grade on every surface that touches bread, stated |
| Shade settings | 6 levels; control type not stated |
| Functions | Bagel, Defrost, Reheat, Cancel |
| Slot width | 1.5 in |
| Colour named | White |
| Dimensions | 11.6 x 7.1 x 7.5 in (L x W x H) |
| Cord storage | Wraps under the base (bullet headed “Retractable Power Cord”) |
| Warranty | 1-Year Limited |
| Seller | keenstone |
| Best Sellers Rank | #3,472 overall; #21 in Toasters |
| Best For | A buyer who wants a stated stainless body and wide slots in one retro shell |
Why We Recommend It
This is the best-ranked toaster on the page, and its listing does more than describe a look. Keenstone sits at #21 in Toasters and #3,472 overall, ahead of every other retro model here. The title is plain, “Retro Stainless Steel Kitchen Essentials”, and the bullets back it with specifics: a material, a slot width, a shade count and four named functions. For a category that is sold mostly on colour and curves, that is unusual, and it is why we make it the pick.
The housing is stated twice, in two different ways. The design bullet says “Vintage white finish. Rounded stainless steel body.” The first bullet is about the inside: “This toaster with stainless steel uses 18/8 food-grade steel on every surface that touches your bread.” So the listing claims stainless both outside and in, with a white finish over the outside. It does not say what that finish is, paint, powder coat or enamel. The copy adds “No chipping. No rust. No weird smells when it heats up.” Those are the seller’s claims; nothing in the listing documents them, and we cannot confirm them.
Under the styling, the functions are fully modern. One bullet is headed “Bagel, Defrost, Reheat & Cancel” and explains each: bagel “to bake only one side”, reheat that “warms cold toast without extra browning”, and cancel to “stop at anytime”. Four functions puts it level with the Culinaid and the Aigostar, behind only the BUYDEEM’s six. Shade runs over six levels, “Level 1 for barely warmed. Level 6 for dark and crispy.” The listing does not say whether you pick the level with a dial or buttons, so if the turn of a knob is part of the retro appeal for you, check the product photos.
The slots are a stated 1.5 inches. “This toaster 2 slice wide slot has 1.5-inch openings. Texas toast. Homemade sourdough. English muffins.” That is about 38mm, by our arithmetic, level with the Roter Mond, Culinaid and BUYDEEM, a tenth of an inch wider than the SMEG and a tenth narrower than the Aigostar. If your loaf is hand-cut and thick, our thick slice toaster guide sets slot widths against real bread thicknesses.
Two small conflicts are worth knowing about. The functions bullet calls it “This toaster 5 slice”, while the title, the size field and every other bullet say 2 slice; read that as a copy slip. And the cord bullet is headed “Retractable Power Cord”, but its text says “The cord wraps neatly underneath the base”, which is a wrap, not a retracting reel. Plan for a wrap.
What to weigh. It is sold by keenstone, not Amazon.com, with a stated “1-Year Limited” warranty and a release date of November 2024 in the spec table. The removable crumb tray “slides out from the bottom”. No weight and no wattage are given. Only one colour, white, is named on this listing. Against the field, it is the most completely described two-slice retro toaster here, short only of a stated shade control.
Pros
- Best rank here: #21 in Toasters
- Stainless body and 18/8 food-contact steel stated
- 1.5 in slots, stated
- Bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel
- 1-year limited warranty stated
- Removable crumb tray and cord wrap
Cons
- Shade control type not stated
- Finish over the steel not described
- Bullet says “5 slice” in error
- “Retractable” cord is described as a wrap
- No wattage or weight stated
- Only white named
Best for: A buyer who wants a stated stainless body, 1.5-inch slots and four functions under a 1950s diner look.
2. Roter Mond 2 Slice Toaster Retro Stainless Steel, Orange — Best Dial Control

A stated 18/8 stainless casing and the only shade knob on the page with times attached.
Key Specifications
| Housing | Food-grade 18/8 stainless steel casing, stated |
|---|---|
| Shade settings | 6-setting knob, 70 to 220 seconds |
| Functions | Cancel, Bagel, Defrost |
| Slot width | 1.5 in |
| Colour named | Orange |
| Dimensions | 10.8 x 7.4 x 6.9 in (L x W x H) |
| Listed weight | 3.06 pounds |
| Crumb tray | Removable, stated |
| Cord storage | Bottom cord wrap |
| Warranty | Not stated |
| Seller | RetroKitch |
| Best Sellers Rank | #4,064 overall; #27 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
This is the clearest case on the page of a retro control with a modern number behind it. The second bullet is headed “6 Setting Shadow Knob”, and it goes further than any other listing here: “6 different baking settings for you to choose with lower settings and higher settings from 70 seconds to 220 seconds”. So you turn a knob, as you would on a mid-century toaster, and the listing tells you what the knob does. Seventy seconds to 220 seconds is about 1 minute 10 seconds to 3 minutes 40 seconds, by our arithmetic. No other listing gives a time for any setting.
The casing is stated as stainless, with a grade. “Roter Mond 2 slice toaster comes with food-grade 18/8 stainless steel casing, non-toxic and BPA free.” Only the Roter Mond and the Keenstone name 18/8, and the Roter Mond applies it to the casing itself. The same bullet calls the shell “anti-rust and the anti-overheat” and “durable”. Those are the seller’s words; the listing gives no test or standard to back them, and we do not add to them. The colour captured is orange, and the listing does not say how the colour is applied over the steel.
Three functions, and one of them is missing. The listing names “3 unique features; cancel, bagel, and defrost”. It explains each: cancel “with a single click”, a “one-sided bagel toasting function” and a defrost button “for toasting frozen bread”. Reheat is not listed. Seven of the ten toasters here name reheat, so if you often rewarm toast that has gone cold, that is a gap.
The slots are a stated 1.5 inches. “The generous 1.5-inch wide slots easily accommodate artisan loaves, thick bagels, and English muffins.” That matches the Keenstone, Culinaid and BUYDEEM. At 10.8 by 7.4 inches, the footprint is about 80 square inches by our arithmetic, among the smaller two-slice outlines here, and at 6.9 inches it ties the Muellers as the lowest stated height. The listed weight is 3.06 pounds.
One field reads oddly. The item-count field says 2, while the title describes one 2-slice toaster; the listing does not explain the figure, and nothing in the bullets suggests two units in the box. The model field simply repeats the ASIN, so there is no model number to quote to a seller. The crumb tray is described as “removable detachable pallets”, and the cord wraps under the base.
What to weigh. It ranks #27 in Toasters and #4,064 overall, the second-best rank on the page. It is sold by RetroKitch, a third-party seller, and no warranty is stated. If a real knob and a stated stainless casing are what “vintage” means to you, this is the listing that documents both best.
Pros
- Shade knob named, the retro control
- Only listing that times its settings: 70 to 220 s
- 18/8 stainless casing stated
- 1.5 in slots, stated
- Second-best rank: #27 in Toasters
- Compact, 6.9 in tall
Cons
- Reheat not listed
- No warranty stated
- Sold by a third-party seller
- Item-count field reads 2, unexplained
- No model number beyond the ASIN
- Durability claims are undocumented
Best for: A buyer who wants a turned knob with known times and a stated stainless casing.
3. SMEG TSF01 2-Slice Toaster, 50s Retro Style, Matte Black — Best Premium Style

The design-led name in retro toasters states a steel body and a chrome base, and the narrowest slot figure here.
Key Specifications
| Housing | Steel body, polished chrome base |
|---|---|
| Shade settings | 6 browning levels; control type not stated |
| Functions | Bagel, Reheat, Defrost; cancel not stated |
| Slot width | 1.4 in, self-centring racks |
| Colour named | Matte Black |
| Dimensions | 8.0 x 12.0 x 8.0 in (L x W x H) |
| Listed weight | 5.0 pounds |
| Crumb tray | Removable stainless steel |
| Extras | Auto pop-up; cord wrap; TSSR01 sandwich rack sold separately |
| Warranty | 1 Year Warranty |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #5,593 overall; #33 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
SMEG is the brand most people picture when they search for a retro toaster, and the TSF01 is sold on that picture. The title says “50’s Retro Style” and the first bullet promises “signature SMEG style”. It is the premium choice on this page, and the question is what the listing documents beyond the shape.
The housing is steel on chrome, not stated stainless. “A compact 2-slice toaster featuring a steel body and polished chrome base for a distinctive countertop look.” The word stainless appears once, for the crumb tray: “a removable stainless steel crumb tray”. So the body is steel with a matte black finish, and the listing does not say what that finish is. The polished chrome base is the most period detail any listing here describes. At a listed 5.0 pounds, it is also the heaviest toaster on the page that gives a weight; the next heaviest stated is the Roter Mond at 3.06.
Six shades and three modern functions. “Six browning levels let you choose your preferred shade of toast, from lightly golden to deeply toasted.” Then “Bagel, Reheat and Defrost settings”. The listing does not mention a cancel function, the only one of the ten that leaves it out. Nor does it say how you set the shade. Product photos are worth checking if a dial is part of what you are paying for, because on paper this listing names neither a dial nor buttons.
The slots are the narrowest stated on the page. “Two 1.4-inch slots accommodate different bread sizes and thicknesses, while self-centering racks help position slices.” The listing calls them “EXTRA-WIDE”. 1.4 inches is about 36mm by our arithmetic, a tenth of an inch less than the 1.5-inch group and two tenths less than the Aigostar. For sandwich loaf and most bagels that makes little difference; for thick hand-cut slices it might, and our extra wide toaster roundup covers that in detail. The self-centring racks are a feature only the SMEG, the Nostalgia Classic Retro and the Muellers mention.
The outline is short and wide. The spec table gives 8.0 inches long, 12.0 wide and 8.0 high, which is a footprint of 96 square inches by our arithmetic, larger than any other two-slice toaster here. At 8.0 inches it ties the Nostalgia Retro Wide as the tallest stated. The listing adds an automatic pop-up and an integrated cord wrap, and an optional “separately sold SMEG TSSR01 Sandwich Rack” for toasted sandwiches.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com with a stated “1 Year Warranty”, and ranks #33 in Toasters and #5,593 overall, the third-best rank here. What the premium buys, on the listing alone, is the brand’s design, a chrome base and a heavier steel body. It does not buy wider slots, more shades or more functions than the Keenstone.
Pros
- Polished chrome base, the most period detail stated
- Steel body; 5.0 lb listed
- Bagel, reheat and defrost
- Self-centring racks; auto pop-up
- 1-year warranty; sold by Amazon.com
- Removable stainless crumb tray
Cons
- 1.4 in slots, the narrowest stated
- Cancel not stated
- Shade control type not stated
- Body not stated as stainless
- Largest two-slice footprint here
- Sandwich rack sold separately
Best for: A buyer who wants the design-led 1950s look on a chrome base and does not need the widest slots.
4. Culinaid Toaster 2 Slice Retro Stainless Steel, Yellow (ST043) — Best Stated Slot Size

A dial, a stainless body and the most complete slot measurement on the page.
Key Specifications
| Housing | Stainless steel body; “metal cool-touch shell” |
|---|---|
| Shade settings | 6-shade browning dial |
| Functions | Bagel, Defrost, Reheat, Cancel (cancel listed twice) |
| Slot size | 1.5 in wide, 4.72 in deep |
| Colour named | Yellow; other colours mentioned, not named |
| Dimensions | 11.02 x 7.28 x 7.28 in (L x W x H) |
| Listed weight | 2.87 pounds |
| Crumb tray | Removable, rinseable |
| Cord storage | Under the base |
| Warranty | Not stated |
| Seller | Culinaid |
| Best Sellers Rank | #5,832 overall; #35 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
The Culinaid pairs the retro control with the most measured slot on the page. Its second bullet is headed “6 Shade Browning Levels Dial”, one of only four listings that name a dial or knob. Its third gives slot width and depth together: “Culinaid 2 slice vintage toaster has a 1.5-inch wide slot and a 4.72-inch depth”. Only the BUYDEEM also gives a depth, 4.3 inches. If you want to know before you buy whether a tall slice of sourdough will stand clear of the top, this is the listing that lets you check.
The body is stated as stainless. “Culinaid toaster 2 slice features a stainless steel body with premium finish.” The bullet adds that the inner tank is “food-grade, non-toxic and harmless, and BPA free”, and mentions a “metal cool-touch shell”. The listing does not say what the yellow finish is or how warm the shell gets, and it gives no temperature for “cool-touch”. It also says the steel “resists rust” and “effectively resists fingerprints and smudges”; treat those as claims, since nothing is offered to support them.
Four functions, with one listed twice. The bullet heading says “4 Practical Basic Functions”, and the text reads “cancel, bagel, defrost, and cancel functions”. The explanation that follows describes a “Reheat function” that “only reheats bread that has been cooled and toasted”, so the four are bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel, with a copy error in the list. The functions are worked by “simple function buttons”, alongside the dial. That is the retro-plus-modern pairing in its plainest form: a dial for shade, buttons for everything new.
The colour range is mentioned and not named. “Culinaid Retro 2 Slice Toaster comes in a variety of colors.” The captured listing is yellow. Which other colours exist, the listing does not say; check the colour selector on the product page.
The outline is compact. 11.02 by 7.28 inches is about 80 square inches of counter by our arithmetic, and 7.28 inches tall. The listed weight is 2.87 pounds. The crumb tray pulls out and can be rinsed, the base is non-slip, and there is cord storage underneath. Our easy clean toaster guide looks harder at crumb trays and wipe-down surfaces if that matters most to you.
What to weigh. It ranks #35 in Toasters and #5,832 overall, and is sold by Culinaid. No warranty is stated and no wattage is given. On paper it covers more of the retro-versus-features checklist than any other listing here: stainless body, dial, four functions, slot width and depth.
Pros
- 6-shade dial named
- Stainless body stated
- 1.5 in wide and 4.72 in deep slots, both stated
- Bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel
- Compact footprint; 2.87 lb listed
- Rinseable crumb tray; cord storage
Cons
- No warranty stated
- Cancel listed twice; reheat only in the text
- Other colours mentioned, not named
- “Cool-touch” given no figure
- No wattage stated
- Sold by the brand, not Amazon.com
Best for: A buyer who wants a dial, a stated stainless body and a known slot depth for tall slices.
5. Aigostar Toaster 2 Slice, Retro Extra-Wide Slot, Cream White (B30202H3L) — Widest Stated Slots

The widest slot figure on the page, 1.6 inches, behind a knob and four functions.
Key Specifications
| Housing | “Stainless steel design”; heat insulation around the body |
|---|---|
| Shade settings | 6 levels, set by a control knob |
| Functions | Defrost, Reheat, Cancel, Bagel |
| Slot width | 1.6 in |
| Colour named | Cream White |
| Dimensions | 11.14 x 7.3 x 7.3 in (L x W x H) |
| Lift | High lift design, stated |
| Extras | Auto pop-up; cord storage under the base; removable crumb tray |
| Warranty | Not stated |
| Seller | Aigostar US |
| Best Sellers Rank | #8,006 overall; #47 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
If slot width is the feature that decides it for you, the Aigostar prints the biggest number here. “With 2 slice toaster and 1.6 inch slots, it can accommodate thick and thin bagels, muffins, bread, sourdough, tortillas and other types of bread.” 1.6 inches is about 41mm by our arithmetic, a tenth of an inch wider than the 1.5-inch group and two tenths wider than the SMEG. The title calls it “Retro Extra-Wide Slot”, and unlike the two Nostalgias, it puts a figure on the claim.
It is one of the four with a stated knob. “Get your favorite shade of brown by turning the control knob to the desired level.” There are six levels, “from light to dark”, and the listing says it “Auto pops up after toasting”. Only the Aigostar and the SMEG mention an automatic pop-up in words, though a pop-up toaster that did not pop would be unusual.
The functions are four and all explained. A bullet headed “4 in 1 Function” names defrost, reheat, cancel and bagel, and describes the bagel setting as single-sided: “a crispy texture on one side and a softer texture on the other”. The same bullet calls it the “Aigostar toaster oven”, which it is not; it is a two-slice pop-up toaster, and the slip is just copy.
The housing wording is the loosest of the stainless claims. The cleaning bullet says “its stainless steel design can avoid rusting”, which does not say plainly that the body is stainless. The safety bullet adds a “Heat insulation design around the toaster’s body to prevent it from scalding hands” and a “High lift design” for removing bread. The cream white colour suggests a finish over whatever the body is, and the listing does not describe it. If a stated stainless shell matters to you, the Keenstone, Roter Mond and Culinaid say it more clearly.
The outline is mid-pack. 11.14 by 7.3 inches is about 81 square inches by our arithmetic, 7.3 inches tall. No weight and no wattage are given. Cord storage sits “under the bottom” and the crumb tray pulls out. The spec table names no manufacturer, only the brand.
What to weigh. It ranks #47 in Toasters and #8,006 overall, and is sold by Aigostar US. No warranty is stated; the listing says to “Refer to user manual for troubleshooting steps”. It is the pick for the widest stated slot with a knob and four functions, provided you can live with vaguer wording on the shell.
Pros
- 1.6 in slots, the widest stated
- Control knob named
- Defrost, reheat, cancel and bagel
- High lift and auto pop-up stated
- Heat insulation around the body stated
- Cord storage and removable crumb tray
Cons
- Housing wording does not say stainless body plainly
- No warranty stated
- No wattage or weight stated
- Calls itself a “toaster oven” in error
- Manufacturer field blank
- Only cream white named
Best for: A buyer who wants the widest stated slot and a turned knob in a cream retro shell.
6. Nostalgia Classic Retro 2-Slice Toaster, Enamel Coated Steel, Cream (NCRTOS2CM6A) — Best Enamel Finish

The only listing that says how its colour gets onto the steel, with a dial and lighted buttons.
Key Specifications
| Housing | Enamel coated steel body |
|---|---|
| Shade settings | 6 levels, set by a selection dial |
| Functions | Defrost, Cancel, Bagel (lighted buttons) |
| Slot width | Not stated; “2 extra-wide slots” |
| Power | 825 watts |
| Lever | Self-centring, “extra lifting power” |
| Colour named | Cream |
| Dimensions | 11.41 x 7.09 x 7.48 in (L x W x H) |
| Warranty | Not stated |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #5,656 overall; #34 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
This is the listing that answers the colour question. Almost every toaster on this page is sold in a colour, and almost none says how that colour is applied. The Nostalgia Classic Retro says it in the title: “Enamel Coated Steel Body”. That is the period answer, too; enamel over steel is how colour was put on kitchen appliances for decades. It is the only listing here that names a coating at all.
It mixes a dial with lighted buttons, and says so. “Control your browning level by using the selection dial. Use the bagel and defrost buttons that light up when selected.” The title adds “Defrost,Cancel and Bagel Function & 6 Toasting Levels”. So you get a retro dial for shade and modern lit buttons for the extras, the clearest example on the page of a listing that pairs old looks with new functions in its own words. Reheat is not listed.
It is one of only two listings with a stated wattage. “With 825 watts of power, toast your favorite foods to golden-brown perfection.” The BUYDEEM gives 1800W for four slots; the other eight give no figure. A stated wattage does not tell you how evenly a toaster browns, but it is one more number than most of this category offers.
The lever is described in more detail than any other. “Lower your bread into the heating coils with the smooth motion lever with a self-centering function and extra lifting power when toasting is done.” Self-centring and a high lift are both useful with small items such as English muffins. The Aigostar and the BUYDEEM also state a high lift.
The slot width is a word, not a number. The title says “Wide Slots for all Breads” and a bullet says “2 EXTRA-WIDE SLOTS” for “thick slices of artisan bread, bagels, and everything in-between”. No figure is given. Six listings here print one, from 1.4 to 1.6 inches; this is not one of them. The outline is 11.41 by 7.09 inches, about 81 square inches by our arithmetic, and 7.48 inches tall.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #34 in Toasters and #5,656 overall, just behind the SMEG. No warranty is stated in the spec table, unlike its Nostalgia sibling. Choose it if a stated enamel finish, a dial and lighted buttons are the combination you want, and ask about slot width if your bread is thick.
Pros
- Enamel coated steel body, the only stated coating
- Selection dial for shade
- Lighted bagel and defrost buttons
- 825 watts stated
- Self-centring lever with extra lift
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Slot width not stated
- Reheat not listed
- No warranty stated
- No weight stated
- Only cream named
- Six shades, no times given
Best for: A buyer who wants a stated enamel finish, a dial for shade and lit buttons for the extras.
7. BUYDEEM DT640 4-Slice Retro Stainless Steel Toaster, Orange — Best 4-Slice

Four slots, six functions and LED indicators in a retro stainless shell.
Key Specifications
| Housing | Stainless steel, stated in title |
|---|---|
| Slots | 4, each 1.5 in wide and 4.3 in deep |
| Shade settings | 7 levels |
| Functions | Cancel, Bagel, Muffin, Defrost, Defrost+Bagel, Reheat |
| Controls | Two independent control panels; LED indicators |
| Power | 1800W |
| Lever | High lift |
| Colour named | Orange |
| Dimensions | 12 x 9.2 x 7.4 in (bullet); 11.6 x 9.2 x 7.4 in (spec table) |
| Crumb tray and cord storage | Not stated |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #10,497 overall; #56 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
This is the most modern toaster on the page under the most retro title. The BUYDEEM calls itself a “Retro Stainless Steel Toaster with High Lift Lever” and then lists more functions than anything else here: “Cancel, Bagel, Muffin, Defrost, Defrost+Bagel, and Reheat functions with LED indicators”. Six functions, against three or four on every other listing. If the retro look is the wrapper and you want the fullest feature list inside it, this is the one.
It is the only four-slice toaster here, with two sets of controls. “Two separate control panels let you toast two types of bread with different settings at the same time.” Shade runs over seven levels, “from lightly golden to deep crispy”. The listing does not say whether shade is set by dial or buttons; it does say the functions have LED indicators. For a household that needs four slices at once, nothing else on the page competes.
The slots are measured both ways. “4 extra-wide (1.5”) slots with 4.3” depth fit thick bread, bagels, English muffins, sourdough, and more.” Only the Culinaid also gives a depth, and its 4.72 inches is deeper. 1.5 inches matches the Keenstone, Roter Mond and Culinaid. Power is a stated 1800W, the highest figure here and one of only two wattages given; the Nostalgia Classic Retro states 825 watts for two slots.
The dimensions disagree by four tenths of an inch. The design bullet says “Measuring just 12” x 9.2” x 7.4””. The spec table gives 11.6 inches wide, 9.2 long and 7.4 high. Plan for 12 inches. At 12 by 9.2 inches, the footprint is about 110 square inches by our arithmetic, the largest on the page, as you would expect for four slots. If counter width is tight, our slimline toaster roundup covers narrower shapes.
Some basics are missing from the copy. The bullets do not mention a crumb tray or cord storage; every other listing here mentions at least one, and nine mention both. A four-slice pop-up toaster without a crumb tray would be unusual, so treat this as a gap in the listing rather than in the toaster, and check the product photos. No weight and no warranty are given, and the housing claim rests on the title alone.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #56 in Toasters and #10,497 overall. It is the pick for a family that wants retro styling without giving up four slots, dual controls and the broadest set of functions on the page.
Pros
- Only 4-slice toaster here
- Six functions, the most on the page
- Two independent control panels; LED indicators
- 1.5 in wide, 4.3 in deep slots stated
- 1800W stated; high lift lever
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Crumb tray not mentioned
- Cord storage not mentioned
- Width given as 12 in and 11.6 in
- Largest footprint here
- Shade control type not stated
- No warranty or weight stated
Best for: A household that wants four slices, dual controls and every modern function under a retro shell.
8. Nostalgia Retro Wide 2-Slice Toaster, Vintage Design, Red — Best Lighted Buttons

Lighted buttons for the modern functions, but the fewest shades and no material named.
Key Specifications
| Housing | Not stated |
|---|---|
| Shade settings | 5 browning levels; control type not stated |
| Functions | Bagel, Defrost, Cancel (lighted buttons) |
| Slot width | Not stated; “EXTRA-WIDE” |
| Colour named | Red |
| Dimensions | 11.0 x 6.0 x 8.0 in (L x W x H) |
| Crumb tray | Slides out |
| Cord storage | In the bottom of the unit |
| Warranty | 1 Year Limited |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #6,568 overall; #38 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
The Retro Wide leads with its lighted controls. “LIGHTED CONTROLS: Lighted control buttons feature bagel, defrost, and cancel options.” It is one of three listings here that describe lit buttons, with its Nostalgia sibling and the BUYDEEM’s LED indicators. That is a modern touch on a red, rounded retro body, and the listing is direct about it.
The housing material is never named. The title says “Vintage Design”, and the bullets cover slots, controls, shades, cord storage and the crumb tray. None says what the body is made of. It is the only listing on the page with no housing material at all, which does not mean it is plastic; it means the listing does not tell you. If the material matters, ask before you buy.
It has the fewest shade settings here. “The 5 browning levels allow you to choose your preferred doneness.” Every other toaster on the page has six or seven. One level fewer may not matter in practice, but it is the bottom of a narrow range. The listing does not say how you set the shade.
“Wide” is in the name and not in the numbers. “EXTRA-WIDE TOASTER: The 2 large slots are perfect for toasting bagel halves and thick slices of bread, English muffins, and more.” No width is given. For a toaster called Retro Wide, that is the missing figure that matters most. At 6.0 inches, it is the narrowest stated body here and, at 8.0 inches, ties the SMEG as the tallest; its 66 square inch footprint, by our arithmetic, is the smallest on the page. A narrow body and wide slots can coexist, but the listing gives you no way to check.
The basics are covered. “Cord storage in bottom of unit allows for tidy storage” and the “Crumb tray easily slides out”. The spec table gives a “1 Year Limited” warranty, one of four warranties stated on the page. The model and part number fields both read just “Retro”, which is not much to quote to a seller.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #38 in Toasters and #6,568 overall. Reheat is not listed. It suits a buyer who wants a red retro toaster with lit buttons and a stated warranty, and is happy to skip a slot figure and a material.
Pros
- Lighted bagel, defrost and cancel buttons
- 1 year limited warranty stated
- Sold by Amazon.com
- Smallest footprint here by our arithmetic
- Slide-out crumb tray
- Cord storage in the base
Cons
- Housing material not stated
- Only 5 shade levels, the fewest
- Slot width not stated despite the name
- Reheat not listed
- Shade control type not stated
- Model field reads only “Retro”
Best for: A buyer who wants lit buttons and a stated warranty on a slim red retro body.
9. MUELLER HOME Retro Toaster 2 Slice, 7 Browning Levels, Black (MR 220) — Best Budget

Seven shades and reheat in a black retro body, with no bagel setting and no slot figure.
Key Specifications
| Housing | “Sleek, glossy design with stainless steel” |
|---|---|
| Shade settings | 7 browning levels; control type not stated |
| Functions | Cancel, Defrost, Reheat; no bagel |
| Slot width | Not stated; self-centring slots |
| Colour named | Black |
| Dimensions | 6.5 x 11.5 x 6.9 in (L x W x H) |
| Listed weight | 2.17 pounds |
| Feet | Four silicone feet |
| Warranty | “Manufacturers Warranty”, no term |
| Seller | VENTRA LLC |
| Best Sellers Rank | #19,450 overall; #82 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
Mueller sells the 1950s look in exactly those words. “Beautiful in its simplicity, this vintage toaster gives you 1950s styling, but with premium durability and functionality.” The styling claim is clear. The durability claim is the seller’s, and the listing offers nothing to support it; we do not repeat it as fact. What the listing does document is a shade count, three functions and a set of practical details.
Seven shades, the joint most on the page. The title leads with “7 Browning Levels”, matching the BUYDEEM and the turquoise Mueller. The listing does not say how the level is set. It describes “self-centering slots” but gives no width; it is one of four listings here with no slot figure, and the only two-slice pair that does not even claim “wide”.
It is the only model on the page without a bagel setting. “You can choose to Cancel, Defrost, or even Reheat your toast too.” Three functions, and bagel is not one of them. Eight of the ten list a bagel function; the two Muellers, which share the same copy, are the exceptions. If you toast bagel halves often, that matters more than the extra shade level.
The housing wording is partial. The style bullet says “The sleek, glossy design with stainless steel will be a feature on any countertop while adding a punch of color!”. That says stainless is part of the design, not that the body is stainless. Black is the captured colour, and the bullet says “Choose your hue” without naming the options.
It is light and low. The listed weight is 2.17 pounds, the lightest stated on the page, and at 6.9 inches it ties the Roter Mond and the turquoise Mueller as the lowest. The spec table gives 6.5 inches long and 11.5 wide, the same figures as the turquoise listing with length and width swapped. It has “four silicone feet for stability”, a slide-out crumb tray and an under-base cord wrap.
What to weigh. It is sold by VENTRA LLC and ranks #82 in Toasters and #19,450 overall, well ahead of its turquoise twin. The warranty field reads only “Manufacturers Warranty”, with no term. It is a budget way into the look; just accept no bagel setting and no slot width.
Pros
- 7 shade levels, the joint most
- Reheat, defrost and cancel
- 2.17 lb, the lightest stated
- 6.9 in tall, the joint lowest
- Self-centring slots; silicone feet
- Crumb tray and cord wrap
Cons
- No bagel function
- Slot width not stated
- Housing wording does not say stainless body
- Warranty term not given
- Shade control type not stated
- Sold by a third-party seller
Best for: A buyer who wants the 1950s look in black for less, and rarely toasts bagels.
10. Mueller Retro Toaster 2 Slice, 7 Browning Levels, Turquoise (MR 220T) — Best Turquoise

The same toaster on paper as the black Mueller, in the one turquoise on the page.
Key Specifications
| Housing | “Stainless Steel Features” (title) |
|---|---|
| Shade settings | 7 browning levels; control type not stated |
| Functions | Reheat, Defrost, Cancel; no bagel |
| Slot width | Not stated; self-centring slots |
| Colour named | Turquoise |
| Dimensions | 11.5 x 6.5 x 6.9 in (L x W x H), rounded |
| Listed weight | Not stated |
| Crumb tray | Removable, slide-out |
| Cord storage | Under the base |
| Warranty | “Manufacturers Warranty”, no term |
| Seller | DOCTORS BEST PRODUCTS INC |
| Best Sellers Rank | #50,214 overall; #156 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
This is the colour choice, and on paper nothing else. Its bullets are word for word the same as the black Mueller Home listing, and its model, “MR 220T”, sits beside the black’s “MR 220 Black”. The difference the listings show is the colour, turquoise, the only one on the page, plus the seller, the rank and a few fields.
The title says a little more than the black’s. “Mueller Retro Toaster 2 Slice with 7 Browning Levels and 3 Functions: Reheat, Defrost & Cancel, Stainless Steel Features, Removable Crumb Tray, Under Base Cord Storage”. That spells out the three functions, and again bagel is not among them. “Stainless Steel Features” is the same partial wording: stainless is part of the toaster, and the listing does not say which part.
Seven shades and self-centring slots, with no width. The bullets promise “self-centering slots and 7 browning settings”. Like its twin, it gives no slot figure and does not say how the shade is set. If you want a slot width in writing, six other listings here give one.
Some fields differ from the black listing. The spec table gives the dimensions to eleven decimal places, which round to 6.9 inches high, 11.5 long and 6.5 wide; the black listing gives the same three figures with length and width swapped. This listing gives no weight, where the black lists 2.17 pounds. The brand field reads “MÜELLERHOME” rather than “MUELLER HOME”. None of that suggests a different toaster, but it does mean you are reading two listings, not one.
The colour range is hinted at, not named. “Choose your hue and add a retro vibe to your kitchen!” Turquoise and black are the two captured here. If you want another shade, check the selector; neither listing names what else exists.
What to weigh. It is sold by DOCTORS BEST PRODUCTS INC and ranks #156 in Toasters and #50,214 overall, the weakest rank on the page by some way. It is the lowest-priced listing here. Buy it if turquoise is the point, and accept the same trade-offs as the black: no bagel setting, no slot width and an open-ended warranty field.
Pros
- The only turquoise on the page
- 7 shade levels, the joint most
- Reheat, defrost and cancel
- Self-centring slots
- 6.9 in tall, the joint lowest
- Crumb tray and cord storage
Cons
- No bagel function
- Slot width not stated
- Weakest rank: #156 in Toasters
- No weight stated
- Warranty term not given
- Housing wording is partial
Best for: A buyer for whom turquoise is the deciding feature and bagels are rare.
What the Shell Is Made Of
The retro look lives in the housing, so that is where we start. The table records each listing’s own words about its body, the colour it was captured in, and whether it says anything about the finish. We have not inferred any material from a photograph or a colour.
| Toaster | Housing in the listing’s words | Colour captured | Finish described |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roter Mond | “18/8 stainless steel casing” | Orange | No |
| Keenstone | “Rounded stainless steel body” | White | “Vintage white finish” |
| Culinaid | “Stainless steel body” | Yellow | “Premium finish”, unspecified |
| BUYDEEM | “Retro Stainless Steel Toaster” (title) | Orange | No |
| SMEG | “Steel body and polished chrome base” | Matte Black | Matte, unspecified |
| Nostalgia Classic Retro | “Enamel Coated Steel Body” | Cream | Enamel |
| Aigostar | “Stainless steel design” | Cream White | No |
| Mueller Home, black | “Glossy design with stainless steel” | Black | Glossy, unspecified |
| Mueller, turquoise | “Stainless Steel Features” | Turquoise | Glossy, unspecified |
| Nostalgia Retro Wide | Not stated | Red | No |
Four state a stainless body; two state a steel one; three hedge; one is silent. The Roter Mond, Keenstone, Culinaid and BUYDEEM say stainless steel body, casing or toaster in plain terms. The SMEG and the Nostalgia Classic Retro say steel, and the Nostalgia adds an enamel coating. The Aigostar and both Muellers put stainless in the copy without saying the body is made of it. The Nostalgia Retro Wide names nothing. No listing on the page says plastic, and no listing says painted.
Colour on stainless is a finish the listings mostly skip. Bare stainless steel is silver. Every stainless claim here comes in a colour, orange, white, yellow, so something has been applied over the metal. Only the Keenstone names it as a “finish” at all, and only the Nostalgia Classic Retro names what kind, enamel. What that coating is matters to how a toaster looks after years of wiping, and none of the stainless listings tells you. We make no claim about how any of these finishes wear; the listings give us nothing to judge it by.
Weight is the only other clue, and four give it. The SMEG lists 5.0 pounds, the Roter Mond 3.06, the Culinaid 2.87 and the black Mueller 2.17. The SMEG’s steel body on a chrome base is the heaviest stated by a clear margin. The other six give no weight. Weight is not a measure of quality, but it is one fact about the metal that a listing can print and most of these do not.

Dial, Knob or Buttons: How Each Sets the Shade
Nothing says retro like a dial you turn. On this page, the dial is rarer than the colour suggests. The table sets out how many shade levels each listing gives, how it says you set them, and what else is on the control panel.
| Toaster | Shade levels | Shade control as stated | Function controls | Lights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roter Mond | 6 (70–220 s) | Knob | Cancel button; bagel, defrost | Not stated |
| Culinaid | 6 | Dial | “Simple function buttons” | Not stated |
| Aigostar | 6 | Control knob | Not described | Not stated |
| Nostalgia Classic Retro | 6 | Selection dial | Bagel and defrost buttons | Buttons light up |
| Keenstone | 6 | Not stated | Not described | Not stated |
| SMEG | 6 | Not stated | Not described | Not stated |
| BUYDEEM | 7 | Not stated; two control panels | Six functions | LED indicators |
| Mueller Home, black | 7 | Not stated | Not described | Not stated |
| Mueller, turquoise | 7 | Not stated | Not described | Not stated |
| Nostalgia Retro Wide | 5 | Not stated | Lighted control buttons | Lighted |
Four name a dial or knob. The Roter Mond, the Culinaid, the Aigostar and the Nostalgia Classic Retro. Of those, the Roter Mond is the only listing that says what each turn means, from 70 to 220 seconds. The other six give a count and stop. That includes the SMEG, the listing most buyers would expect to describe its controls, and the Keenstone, the best-ranked. A listing that does not name its control type is not saying there is no dial; it is leaving you to check the photos.
The shade range is narrow: five to seven. Six listings give six levels, three give seven and one gives five. That is a spread of two settings across the whole page. More levels are finer steps, not a wider range; a toaster with seven settings does not necessarily go darker than one with six. Without times or temperatures, which only the Roter Mond supplies, the count is a weak basis for choosing.
Three listings put light on the controls. The Nostalgia Retro Wide has “Lighted control buttons”, the Nostalgia Classic Retro has bagel and defrost buttons “that light up when selected”, and the BUYDEEM has “LED indicators” on its functions. That is the retro-plus-modern pairing at its most visible: a 1950s shape with a lit button panel on the side.
Retro Looks, Modern Functions
The other half of the trade is what the styling comes with. The listings were written for buyers who want a toaster that looks old and works like a new one, and the function lists show it. The table counts each function where a listing names it.
| Toaster | Bagel | Defrost | Reheat | Cancel | Extra |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BUYDEEM | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Muffin; Defrost+Bagel |
| Keenstone | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | — |
| Culinaid | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | — |
| Aigostar | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | — |
| SMEG | Yes | Yes | Yes | Not stated | — |
| Roter Mond | Yes | Yes | Not listed | Yes | — |
| Nostalgia Classic Retro | Yes | Yes | Not listed | Yes | — |
| Nostalgia Retro Wide | Yes | Yes | Not listed | Yes | — |
| Mueller Home, black | No | Yes | Yes | Yes | — |
| Mueller, turquoise | No | Yes | Yes | Yes | — |
Defrost is universal; bagel nearly so. All ten list defrost. Nine list cancel; the SMEG does not mention it. Eight list a bagel setting; both Muellers leave it out. Seven list reheat; the Roter Mond and both Nostalgias do not. So the most period-looking feature on these toasters, the shape, comes with a set of functions that no 1950s toaster had, on every single listing.
Four functions is the common ceiling. Four two-slice toasters list all four of bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel: the Keenstone, the Culinaid, the Aigostar, and, missing only cancel, the SMEG. The BUYDEEM goes to six by splitting out a muffin setting and a combined defrost-plus-bagel setting, which makes sense on a four-slice machine with two control panels.
The missing function is the one to check. Bagel is the one most people use, and the two Muellers are the only toasters here without it. Reheat is the one most often missing. Cancel is the one the SMEG is silent on. None of these is a reason to rule a toaster out on its own, but together they are the clearest differences between listings that otherwise look alike.
Slot Width, Depth and Footprint
Six listings print a slot width; four do not. Two give a depth. The table puts those beside each stated outline, with footprint area and metric widths worked out by us.
| Toaster | Slot width | Approx. mm (ours) | Slot depth | Stated outline (L x W x H) | Footprint, sq in (ours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aigostar | 1.6 in | About 41 | Not stated | 11.14 x 7.3 x 7.3 in | About 81 |
| Keenstone | 1.5 in | About 38 | Not stated | 11.6 x 7.1 x 7.5 in | About 82 |
| Roter Mond | 1.5 in | About 38 | Not stated | 10.8 x 7.4 x 6.9 in | About 80 |
| Culinaid | 1.5 in | About 38 | 4.72 in | 11.02 x 7.28 x 7.28 in | About 80 |
| BUYDEEM (4 slots) | 1.5 in | About 38 | 4.3 in | 12 (or 11.6) x 9.2 x 7.4 in | About 107–110 |
| SMEG | 1.4 in | About 36 | Not stated | 8.0 x 12.0 x 8.0 in | 96 |
| Nostalgia Classic Retro | “Extra-wide” | — | Not stated | 11.41 x 7.09 x 7.48 in | About 81 |
| Nostalgia Retro Wide | “Extra-wide” | — | Not stated | 11.0 x 6.0 x 8.0 in | 66 |
| Mueller Home, black | Not stated | — | Not stated | 6.5 x 11.5 x 6.9 in | About 75 |
| Mueller, turquoise | Not stated | — | Not stated | 11.5 x 6.5 x 6.9 in | About 75 |
The stated widths sit within two tenths of an inch. 1.4 inches on the SMEG, 1.5 on four listings and 1.6 on the Aigostar. That is about 36 to 41mm by our arithmetic, a spread of roughly 5mm across every number on the page. Most sandwich bread and bagel halves fit any of them. The difference shows up with thick hand-cut slices, where a tenth of an inch is the margin between sliding in and being squeezed. Our extra wide toaster roundup sets these figures against the wider field.
“Extra-wide” without a number is not a measurement. The SMEG calls its 1.4-inch slots “EXTRA-WIDE”, the narrowest figure here. The two Nostalgias use the same words and give no figure at all. So the label carries no information on its own, and the only way to compare is a number in inches.
Retro shapes are compact. The two-slice footprints run from 66 square inches on the slim Nostalgia Retro Wide to 96 on the SMEG, by our arithmetic; most sit around 80. Heights run from 6.9 inches on the Roter Mond and the Muellers to 8.0 inches on the SMEG and the Nostalgia Retro Wide. For a buyer choosing between retro styling and a standard toaster, counter space is rarely the deciding factor. If you are comparing two-slice shapes generally, our 2-slice toaster roundup covers the wider category.
Colour: One Named per Listing
Colour is the reason many people buy a retro toaster, and it is the area where the listings say least. Each listing captured here names one colour, the variant we captured, and no listing names its full range.
- Warm brights: red (Nostalgia Retro Wide), orange (Roter Mond and BUYDEEM), yellow (Culinaid).
- Creams and whites: cream (Nostalgia Classic Retro), cream white (Aigostar), white (Keenstone).
- Cool and dark: turquoise (Mueller), black (Mueller Home) and matte black (SMEG).
Two listings hint at more. Culinaid says its toaster “comes in a variety of colors”. Mueller says “Choose your hue”. Neither names a single alternative. The other eight do not mention a range at all. In practice, many of these models are sold in several colours under one product page, but the listing text captured here does not tell you which, so check the colour selector, and check that the specs you are reading belong to the colour you are buying.
Popularity by Best Sellers Rank
Star ratings were not captured for this roundup, so the only popularity measure is Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank, as returned on 5 October 2026. All ten sit in the Toasters category, so the category ranks can be read against each other directly. Ranks move constantly; read the order, not the exact numbers.
| Toaster | Toasters rank | Overall rank | Housing stated | Dial or knob named |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keenstone | #21 | #3,472 | Stainless body | No |
| Roter Mond | #27 | #4,064 | Stainless casing | Yes |
| SMEG | #33 | #5,593 | Steel, chrome base | No |
| Nostalgia Classic Retro | #34 | #5,656 | Enamel coated steel | Yes |
| Culinaid | #35 | #5,832 | Stainless body | Yes |
| Nostalgia Retro Wide | #38 | #6,568 | Not stated | No |
| Aigostar | #47 | #8,006 | “Stainless steel design” | Yes |
| BUYDEEM | #56 | #10,497 | Stainless, in title | No |
| Mueller Home, black | #82 | #19,450 | Partial | No |
| Mueller, turquoise | #156 | #50,214 | Partial | No |
The top six are tightly bunched. From #21 to #38 in Toasters, six retro models sit within seventeen places of each other. The two best ranks belong to two of the stainless-body listings, Keenstone and Roter Mond. The SMEG, the design-led premium choice, is third. The two Muellers, the only toasters without a bagel setting and the two with the vaguest housing wording, are last by a distance. That pattern is consistent with buyers paying attention to what is stated, though a rank cannot tell you why anyone bought.
Best Alternatives
| Alternative | Why Consider It | Better For | Main Trade-Off |
|---|---|---|---|
| A plain stainless 2-slice toaster; see our home toaster buying guide | Often more stated features for the same counter space | Buyers who care about function over form | No retro styling or colour |
| A toaster built around slot width; see our thick slice toaster guide | Chosen for bread thickness first | Thick hand-cut sourdough | Styling is an afterthought |
| An easy clean toaster; see our easy clean toaster guide | Crumb trays and surfaces chosen for cleaning | Households that wipe down daily | Fewer bright colours |
| A genuine vintage toaster from a dealer | Actually mid-century | Collectors and display | No defrost, bagel or cancel; age-related electrical checks needed |
What Each Step Up in the Listing Buys
The look on its own — the two Muellers and the Nostalgia Retro Wide. Retro shape and colour, seven or five shades, three functions. What is missing is the documentation: no slot width on any of the three, partial or absent housing wording, and no bagel setting on the Muellers. The Retro Wide adds lit buttons and a stated warranty; the Muellers add seven shades and reheat.
The look plus a dial — Nostalgia Classic Retro, Aigostar, Culinaid, Roter Mond. These four name the retro control. The Nostalgia adds a stated enamel finish, lit buttons and 825 watts, but no slot width. The Aigostar adds the widest stated slot, 1.6 inches. The Culinaid adds a stated stainless body and slot depth. The Roter Mond adds a stainless casing with a grade and the only timed settings on the page.
The look plus stated stainless and four functions — Keenstone. A stainless body stated outright, 18/8 food-contact steel, 1.5-inch slots, bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel, a 1-year limited warranty and the best rank on the page. What it does not state is its control type.
The look plus scale — BUYDEEM. Four slots, two control panels, six functions, LED indicators and 1800W. It is the step up for capacity and features rather than for period detail.
The look plus the name — SMEG. A steel body on a polished chrome base, the heaviest stated weight, six shades, three functions, a 1-year warranty and the brand most associated with the style. On the listing alone, the premium buys design and a chrome base, not wider slots or more functions.

What to Check Before You Buy
Confirm It Is New, and That You Want New
Every toaster here is a new build with retro styling, and all ten list defrost. If you were picturing a genuine 1950s toaster, that is a different purchase: an antique has none of these functions and its wiring will be decades old. If you want the look and a modern toaster, these listings are the right place to start.
Read the Housing Words Exactly
“Stainless steel body” is a claim about the shell. “Stainless steel features” and “stainless steel design” are not the same claim. Four listings here state a stainless body or casing outright, two say steel, three hedge and one says nothing. If the shell material matters, buy a listing that states it, or ask.
Ask What the Colour Is
Every toaster here is coloured, and only the Nostalgia Classic Retro says its colour is enamel. On a stainless body, the colour is a finish applied over the metal, and the listings do not say what it is. If you care how the finish is made, ask the seller before you order.
Look for a Named Dial if You Want One
Four listings name a dial or knob for the shade. Six give a shade count without saying how you set it. If turning a knob is part of the appeal, check the product photos or pick from the four that say so: the Roter Mond, the Culinaid, the Aigostar and the Nostalgia Classic Retro.
Check the Functions You Use
Defrost is on all ten. Bagel is missing on both Muellers. Reheat is missing on the Roter Mond and both Nostalgias. Cancel is not mentioned on the SMEG. Decide which of the four you actually use, and make sure it is on the listing.
Want a Number for Slot Width
Six listings print a width, from 1.4 to 1.6 inches. Four do not, and two of those still say “extra-wide”. If your bread is thicker than sandwich loaf, choose from the six with a figure, and prefer the Aigostar’s 1.6 inches or the 1.5-inch group over the SMEG’s 1.4.
Check the Colour and the Seller Together
Each listing names one colour, and the same toaster can sit under different sellers in different colours, as the two Muellers show. Four of these were sold by Amazon.com at capture; the rest by brands or third parties. Make sure the colour, the seller and the warranty you are reading all belong to the version in your basket. Unplug any toaster before you empty its crumb tray.

Common Mistakes
- Expecting an antique. All ten are new builds with retro styling; every one lists a defrost function no 1950s toaster had.
- Reading “stainless steel features” as a stainless body. Only four listings state a stainless body or casing outright; three hedge.
- Assuming a dial comes with the look. Only four of ten name a dial or knob for the shade; six give a count and no control type.
- Trusting “extra-wide” without a number. The SMEG calls 1.4 inches extra-wide, the narrowest stated figure here.
- Missing the absent bagel setting. Both Muellers list cancel, defrost and reheat, and no bagel function.
- Counting shade levels as a range. Settings run from 5 to 7; only the Roter Mond says what they mean, 70 to 220 seconds.
- Assuming the colour you want exists. Each listing names one colour; Culinaid and Mueller mention others without naming them.
- Measuring the BUYDEEM at 11.6 inches. Its bullet says 12 inches wide; plan the counter for the larger figure.
Who Should Buy Which
Buy the Keenstone if you want the best-documented retro toaster here. A stated stainless body, 18/8 food-contact steel, 1.5-inch slots, bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel, a 1-year limited warranty and the best rank on the page. Accept that the listing does not say how you set the shade.
Buy the Roter Mond if a real knob with known settings matters. An 18/8 stainless casing, a six-setting knob timed at 70 to 220 seconds and 1.5-inch slots. Accept no reheat function and no stated warranty.
Buy the SMEG if the design-led look on a chrome base is the point. A steel body, 5.0 lb listed, six shades, bagel, reheat and defrost, self-centring racks and a 1-year warranty from Amazon.com. Accept the narrowest stated slots, 1.4 inches, and no stated cancel.
Buy the Culinaid if you want a dial, a stainless body and a known slot depth. 1.5 inches wide and 4.72 deep, four functions and a compact outline. Accept no stated warranty and a function list with a copy error.
Buy the Aigostar if slot width comes first. 1.6 inches, the widest stated, with a control knob, four functions and a high lift. Accept vaguer housing wording and no stated warranty.
Buy the Nostalgia Classic Retro if you want a stated enamel finish. A dial, lighted bagel and defrost buttons, 825 watts and a self-centring lever. Accept no slot figure and no reheat.
Buy the BUYDEEM if you need four slots. Two control panels, six functions, LED indicators, 1.5-inch slots and 1800W. Accept the largest footprint and a listing that does not mention a crumb tray.
Buy the Nostalgia Retro Wide if you want lit buttons and a warranty on a slim red body. Accept five shades, no stated material and no slot width despite the name.
Buy the black Mueller Home if you want the look for less and rarely toast bagels. Seven shades, reheat and 2.17 lb listed. Accept no bagel setting and no slot width.
Buy the turquoise Mueller if turquoise is the deciding feature. The same copy as the black, the only turquoise here and the lowest-priced listing. Accept the weakest rank and the same missing bagel setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best vintage toaster?
For most buyers, the Keenstone 2 Slice Retro Stainless Steel Toaster. It is a new toaster with 1950s diner styling, and its listing states more than most in this category: a rounded stainless steel body, 18/8 food-grade steel on the surfaces that touch bread, 1.5-inch slots, six shade levels, and bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel functions. It carries a stated 1-year limited warranty and holds the best Best Sellers Rank of the ten here, #21 in Toasters. If a turned knob is part of what vintage means to you, the Roter Mond names one and times its six settings from 70 to 220 seconds. If the design-led look on a polished chrome base matters most, the SMEG TSF01 is the premium choice, though its 1.4-inch slots are the narrowest stated on the page.
Are vintage toasters on Amazon actually vintage?
No. The toasters sold as vintage or retro on Amazon, including all ten on this page, are new machines built with old-fashioned styling: rounded bodies, short levers, bright or cream colours and sometimes a chrome base. The listings say so themselves; SMEG calls its toaster 50s retro style and Mueller promises 1950s styling. Under the shell, they are modern toasters. All ten list a defrost function, nine list cancel, eight list bagel and seven list reheat, none of which a real mid-century toaster had. If you want a genuine antique, you need a dealer or a collector, and you should have its wiring checked before use. If you want a new toaster that looks old and works like a current one, these listings are the right place to look.
What is the best retro toaster with wide slots?
The Aigostar prints the widest slot figure on this page, 1.6 inches, about 41mm by our arithmetic. Four more give 1.5 inches: the Keenstone, the Roter Mond, the Culinaid and the four-slice BUYDEEM. The Culinaid also gives a slot depth of 4.72 inches, the deepest stated, which helps with tall slices. The SMEG gives 1.4 inches and calls it extra-wide. The two Nostalgia models say extra-wide without a number, and the two Muellers give no width at all. Across every stated figure, the spread is only two tenths of an inch, so most sandwich bread and bagel halves fit any of them. The difference shows with thick hand-cut slices. If that is your bread, choose from the listings that print a number, and prefer 1.5 or 1.6 inches.
Is a stainless steel retro toaster better than an enamel one?
The listings do not give enough to say one is better, and we make no claims about how long either lasts. What they do show is how rarely the material is stated clearly. Four listings here state a stainless body or casing: the Roter Mond, which gives an 18/8 grade, the Keenstone, the Culinaid and the BUYDEEM. One, the Nostalgia Classic Retro, states an enamel coated steel body, the only listing that says how its colour is applied. Every stainless model here comes in a colour, so each has some finish over the metal, and only the Keenstone even calls it a finish. If the shell material matters to you, buy a listing that names it, and ask the seller what the colour coating is before you order.
What is the best stylish toaster?
Style is personal, but on the listings the SMEG TSF01 makes the strongest design case. It describes a steel body on a polished chrome base, the most period detail any listing here mentions, and is sold on 50s retro style. It is the premium choice, and on paper it does not buy wider slots or more functions. If you want style with more stated features, the Keenstone pairs a rounded stainless body and a vintage white finish with 1.5-inch slots and four functions. For colour, the range here runs from red, orange and yellow to cream, white, turquoise and black, with each listing naming one. The Nostalgia Classic Retro adds a stated enamel finish and lighted buttons, and the BUYDEEM puts retro styling on a four-slice toaster.
Do retro toasters have bagel and defrost settings?
Almost all of them do. On this page, all ten list defrost, and eight list a bagel setting. The exceptions are the two Mueller models, which list cancel, defrost and reheat but no bagel function. Reheat is less common: seven of ten list it, and the Roter Mond and both Nostalgia models do not. Cancel is on nine; the SMEG does not mention it. The BUYDEEM four-slice goes furthest, with six functions including a separate muffin setting and a combined defrost-and-bagel option. Three listings put light on the controls: lighted buttons on both Nostalgia models and LED indicators on the BUYDEEM. So a retro look does not mean giving up modern functions. Just check that the one you use most is named on the listing before you buy.
Should a retro toaster have a dial or buttons?
It comes down to taste, since the listings give no evidence that either browns better. A dial is the period control, and four listings here name one for the shade: the Nostalgia Classic Retro, the Roter Mond, the Culinaid and the Aigostar. The Roter Mond is the only one that says what each setting means, from 70 to 220 seconds. Several pair the dial with buttons for the extras: the Nostalgia Classic Retro has lighted bagel and defrost buttons, and the Culinaid uses function buttons. The other six listings give a shade count without saying how it is set, including the SMEG and the Keenstone. That does not mean they lack a dial; it means the text does not say. If the dial matters, check the product photos or choose one of the four that name it.
What is the best 4-slice retro toaster?
The BUYDEEM DT640 is the only four-slice toaster in this roundup, and its listing is the most feature-rich here. It has four 1.5-inch slots with a stated 4.3-inch depth, seven shade settings and six functions: cancel, bagel, muffin, defrost, defrost plus bagel and reheat, with LED indicators. Two independent control panels let each pair of slots run different settings. Power is a stated 1800W, and the title calls it a retro stainless steel toaster with a high lift lever. Plan for a 12-inch width, the larger of the two figures the listing gives; the spec table says 11.6. The bullets do not mention a crumb tray or cord storage, so check the product photos, and note that no warranty is stated.
Final Verdict
A stated stainless body, 1.5-inch slots, four functions, a 1-year limited warranty and the best rank here, #21 in Toasters.
An 18/8 stainless casing and a six-setting knob timed at 70 to 220 seconds, with 1.5-inch slots.
A steel body on a polished chrome base, bagel, reheat and defrost, and a 1-year warranty from Amazon.com.
Every vintage toaster on this page is new, and every one is a modern toaster in an old shape. All ten list defrost, nine cancel, eight bagel and seven reheat. Three light their buttons. The retro part is the shell and the colour; the functions are as current as any plain stainless toaster’s.
The retro details are where the listings go quiet. Only four name a dial or knob for the shade. Only four state a stainless body outright, and only one, the Nostalgia Classic Retro, says how its colour is put on. Six print a slot width, and they sit between 1.4 and 1.6 inches. Each listing names a single colour.
So choose on what is stated, not on the look alone. Decide which functions you use and check them. Look for a stated housing material, a named dial if you want one, and a slot width in inches. Then check that the colour, seller and warranty belong to the version you are buying.
If you buy one retro toaster from this page, make it the Keenstone: a stated stainless body, 1.5-inch slots, bagel, defrost, reheat and cancel, a 1-year limited warranty and the best rank of the ten. If a turned knob matters, the Roter Mond names one and says what it does; if the design-led look on a chrome base is the point, the SMEG is the premium pick.
