Every toaster on this page has a crumb tray. That is the first thing to know about shopping for an easy clean toaster, and it is also the reason the phrase is harder to shop by than it sounds. Ten listings out of ten mention a tray, and for nine of them the tray is the whole of the cleaning story. The differences are in the small print: how the tray comes out, where it sits, and what the listing says, or does not say, about the rest of the machine.
Start with how the tray leaves the toaster. Three listings call theirs “removable”: the bella, the OVENTE and the Oster. Four say it is “slide-out” or that it “slides out”: the Hamilton Beach, the Elite Gourmet, the Nostalgia and the Cuisinart. Two use both words: the Amazon Basics and the Hommater. One, the BLACK+DECKER, does something different. Its tray is a “Drop-Down Crumb Tray”, a door that swings open under the toaster rather than a drawer you pull away and carry to the bin.
Then ask where it is. Only one listing tells you. The Amazon Basics 4-slice says “Convenient rear crumb tray slides out for effortless maintenance”. The other nine never say front, back or side. That matters more than it seems. A tray that pulls from the front can be emptied without moving the toaster. A tray at the back means turning the toaster round, or pulling it forward off the wall, every time you empty it. If your toaster lives tucked under a cabinet, the position of the tray decides whether you will actually empty it.
The outside gets no promises at all. Not one of the ten listings says its housing is fingerprint-resistant, smudge-proof or wipe-clean. Two lead with stainless steel: the Hamilton Beach, whose colour field reads “Stainless Steel”, and the Oster, whose title says “Stainless Steel” while its colour field says “Oat”. The bella describes a “matte finish with stainless steel accents”. The closest any listing comes to an exterior cleaning claim is the Elite Gourmet’s tray, which “catches debris for fast wipe-away cleaning”, and that sentence is about the tray, not the shell.
One toaster claims a cool-touch exterior, and four give a slot width. The Elite Gourmet is the cool-touch one. The Elite Gourmet and the Amazon Basics state 1.25-inch slots; the Cuisinart and the Hommater state 1.5 inches. Five more say their slots are wide without a number, and the OVENTE does not mention slot width at all. Slot width is a cleaning spec as well as a bagel spec: a wider slot is easier to see into, and easier to shake loose crumbs out of when you turn the toaster over the sink.
And on the secondary question, the honest answer is short. There is no such thing as a toaster that makes no crumbs. Bread sheds as it dries, and whatever falls from the slice lands on the elements and the base. Every toaster here gives those crumbs somewhere to go. What the listings let you compare is how easy that place is to reach and empty. That is the whole of the difference, and this guide sorts the ten by it.
So the ten are set out below by what each listing says about cleaning: the tray, how it comes out and where, the finish of the housing, cool-touch claims, cord storage and slot width. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup; popularity is Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank only. Cleaning guidance in this article, such as unplugging first and keeping metal and water out of the slots, is general guidance for pop-up toasters, not an instruction from any listing.
All ten were captured on 5 October 2026. Their overall Best Sellers Ranks run from #94 to #9,690, and nine of the ten are sold by Amazon.com.

Best Sellers Ranks and specifications are taken from each manufacturer’s Amazon listing as displayed on 5 October 2026 through a United States connection, and may change. Tray wording is quoted from each listing’s title and bullets. “Removable” and “slide-out” are recorded exactly as printed; the Amazon Basics and Hommater use both. Only the Amazon Basics states a position, “rear”. The BLACK+DECKER position is inferred from the words “Drop-Down” and is not otherwise stated. Slot widths are as stated; “no figure” means the listing says wide without a measurement. Ranks are category ranks in Toasters as returned on 5 October 2026; overall ranks are in the detail cards. The Cuisinart’s weight field gives a figure that cannot describe a toaster and is left out. The Oster and Nostalgia list no weight. The Hommater was sold by Talent Supply at capture; the other nine by Amazon.com. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for any product here.

How We Chose These Ten
We researched current listings, compared manufacturer specifications and documentation, and read each listing’s cleaning claims line by line: the crumb tray, the finish, the housing and the slots. We did not carry out hands-on testing, and nothing below is presented as measured performance data. Star ratings and review counts were not captured for this roundup. We used Amazon Best Sellers Rank, buy-box stock and listing specifications instead, and nothing on this page describes or implies how owners have scored these toasters.
- Pop-up toasters only — two-slice and four-slice pop-up toasters. Toaster ovens, which clean very differently, were not in the running; our toaster oven broiler guide covers that category.
- Tray wording recorded exactly — “removable”, “slide-out”, “slides out” and “drop-down” are different promises, so we logged the word each listing uses rather than a generic yes.
- Tray position only where stated — front, rear or side is recorded only when the listing says it. Nine listings do not, and we mark them not stated rather than guess from a photo.
- Exterior claims counted, not assumed — we looked for any statement that the housing is fingerprint-resistant, smudge-resistant or wipe-clean, and for a cool-touch claim. A stainless colour is recorded as a colour, not as an easy-clean finish.
- Slot width as a cleaning spec — a stated figure where there is one, and the word used where there is not. Wider slots are easier to see into and easier to shake out.
- Implausible fields left out — where a listed weight cannot describe a toaster, we say so and do not print it. Where two fields on one listing disagree, we report both.
- Popularity from Best Sellers Rank only — ranks are quoted exactly as returned on 5 October 2026, overall and in Toasters. All ten sit in the same category, so the category ranks compare directly.
- Verified stock and seller — each product was the in-stock buy-box offer on amazon.com on 5 October 2026.

The Ten Easy Clean Toasters in Detail
1. Elite Gourmet 2-Slice Cool-Touch Toaster, 1.25" Extra-Wide Slots, ECT1027B — Best Overall

The only cool-touch exterior on the page, a slide-out tray, a stated slot width and the best rank of the ten.
Key Specifications
| Crumb tray | Slide-out, stated |
|---|---|
| Tray position | Not stated |
| Exterior | Cool-touch, stated; black finish |
| Fingerprint or wipe-clean claim | None for the housing; tray offers “wipe-away cleaning” |
| Slot width | 1.25 in, stated |
| Browning settings | 6 |
| Listed dimensions | H 6.25 x L 5.75 x W 9.25 in |
| Listed weight | 1.021 pounds |
| Safety | ETL certified; non-slip feet |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #94 overall; #2 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
This listing covers more of the cleaning questions than any other on the page. Its fourth bullet is headed “QUICK & EASY CLEANUP” and reads: “Convenient slide-out crumb tray catches debris for fast wipe-away cleaning and less mess on your counter.” That is the tray, described as a drawer rather than a door. The third bullet adds “a cool-touch exterior and stable non-slip feet”. The second gives a number: “XTRA WIDE 1.25” SLOTS”. No other toaster here states all three.
Cool-touch matters for cleaning in a way the listing does not spell out. The usual advice is to let a toaster cool before you empty the tray or wipe the outside, because crumbs, the tray and the housing near the slots all stay hot after a cycle. A housing sold as cool-touch should be safer to steady with one hand while you slide the tray out with the other. The listing does not say how cool, and it does not say the tray itself stays cool, so the general rule still applies: unplug, wait, then clean. But of the ten, this is the only listing that makes any claim about the temperature of the shell.
The tray position is not stated. Like eight of its rivals, the Elite Gourmet says slide-out and stops there. It does not say whether the tray pulls from the front, the back or the side. The listed dimensions are 6.25 inches high, 5.75 inches long and 9.25 inches wide, which describes a small toaster, so even a rear tray would mean turning a light machine rather than a heavy one. The listed weight is 1.021 pounds, the lightest usable figure on the page, which makes the turn-it-round-and-shake routine easy.
The 1.25-inch slots are stated, and they are the narrower of the two stated widths. The Cuisinart and the Hommater state 1.5 inches; the Elite Gourmet and the Amazon Basics state 1.25. That is a quarter of an inch, about 6mm by our arithmetic. For cleaning, it means slightly less room to see the elements and slightly less room for loose crumbs to fall clear when you invert the toaster. For bagels, the listing says the slots take “bagels, waffles, English muffins, and thick-cut specialty breads without jamming”; our extra wide toaster roundup sets that width against the rest of the wide-slot market.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #94 overall and #2 in Toasters, the best ranks on the page by a distance; the next best is the Amazon Basics at #242 overall. It has 6 shade settings and “Self-centering guides”, and the listing suggests starting “on level 2–3 for first use”. It also asks you to “allow proper airflow during and after use”, which is sensible for any toaster and a reminder not to push it hard against a wall. No warranty is stated, and there is no cancel, bagel or defrost button in the listing. It is a plain toaster with the clearest set of cleaning claims here.
Pros
- Slide-out crumb tray, stated
- Only cool-touch exterior on the page
- 1.25 in slot width stated
- Best rank here: #94 overall, #2 in Toasters
- Light, 1.021 lb listed, easy to invert
- ETL certified; non-slip feet
Cons
- Tray position not stated
- No fingerprint or wipe-clean claim for the housing
- Narrower of the two stated slot widths
- No warranty stated
- No cancel, bagel or defrost button listed
- 6 shades, fewer than several rivals
Best for: A small kitchen that wants a light toaster with a slide-out tray and the only cool-touch claim here.
2. Amazon Basics 4 Slice Toaster, Extra Wide Slots, Removable Crumb Tray, TA5406A-UL — Best 4-Slice

The only listing on the page that tells you where its crumb tray is: at the rear.
Key Specifications
| Crumb tray | Removable (title); slides out (bullet) |
|---|---|
| Tray position | Rear, stated |
| Exterior | Black & Silver; no finish claim |
| Fingerprint or wipe-clean claim | None |
| Slot size | 5.25 x 1.25 in, stated |
| Slices | 4 |
| Power | 1500W |
| Browning settings | 7; cancel, defrost, bagel |
| Listed dimensions | H 7.59 x L 11.04 x W 11.67 in |
| Listed weight | 5.5997414548 pounds as listed (about 5.6, our rounding) |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #242 overall; #4 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
One line on this listing does something no other listing here does. Its seventh bullet reads: “Easy Clean: Convenient rear crumb tray slides out for effortless maintenance”. That is a position. Nine of the ten listings tell you the tray exists and how it moves; this one tells you which side of the toaster you will be standing at when you empty it. The title adds “Removable Crumb Tray”, so the tray both slides and comes free.
A rear tray is a trade-off, and the listing is honest enough to let you plan for it. A tray at the back keeps the front of the toaster clean-looking, with no drawer edge under the controls. But to empty it, you reach behind the toaster or turn it round. With a listed footprint of 11.04 by 11.67 inches and a weight of about 5.6 pounds, our rounding of the listed figure, this is the heaviest toaster with a usable weight on the page. Turning it round once a week is easy; turning it round every morning is a chore. If your toaster sits with its back to a wall or a splashback, pull it forward far enough to reach the tray rather than dragging it by the cord.
The slot size is stated in full. The third bullet gives “5.25″ x 1.25″ slots”, the only listing here that gives both length and width. Four slots of that size give a lot of room for crumbs to fall, and a lot of room to see the elements when you check for stuck debris. The 1.25-inch width matches the Elite Gourmet; the Cuisinart and the Hommater are wider at 1.5. The listing does not say whether four slots means one long tray or two, and on a four-slice toaster that is worth asking: two trays are two things to empty, and one long tray is a long thing to carry level to the bin.
It is the strongest-selling four-slice toaster here. The Amazon Basics ranks #242 overall and #4 in Toasters, second on the page only to the Elite Gourmet. The other four-slice toaster, the Oster, sits at #4,499 overall and #28 in Toasters. Both describe a removable tray. Only the Amazon Basics says where it is, and only the Amazon Basics gives a slot measurement. If a four-slice is what your household needs, our toaster for bagels and English muffins guide covers how the extra-wide slots handle thick breads.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and runs at 1500W, the only wattage stated on the page apart from the OVENTE’s 700W. It has 7 browning levels, illuminated buttons, and cancel, defrost and bagel functions. The colour is “Black & Silver”, and the listing makes no claim about fingerprints or wiping. No warranty is stated. The listed weight is printed to ten decimal places, 5.5997414548 pounds, which we round to about 5.6. If you want the one toaster here whose tray you can locate before it arrives, this is it.
Pros
- Only stated tray position on the page: rear
- Removable and slides out, both stated
- Full slot size stated: 5.25 x 1.25 in
- #4 in Toasters, best four-slice rank
- 1500W stated
- Cancel, defrost and bagel functions
Cons
- Rear tray means reaching behind or turning it round
- Heaviest usable weight here, about 5.6 lb
- One tray or two not stated
- No fingerprint or wipe-clean claim
- No warranty stated
- Large footprint: 11.04 x 11.67 in listed
Best for: A household that needs four slots and wants to know exactly where the crumb tray is before buying.
3. Cuisinart Compact Toaster, 7 Shade Settings, 2-Slice, CPT-122BK — Best Wide Slot

The widest stated slots on the page, 1.5 inches, with a slide-out tray and the longest warranty.
Key Specifications
| Crumb tray | Slide-out, stated |
|---|---|
| Tray position | Not stated |
| Exterior | Black; no finish claim |
| Fingerprint or wipe-clean claim | None |
| Slot width | 1.5 in, stated |
| Browning settings | 7-setting dial; defrost and cancel |
| Carriage | High-lift, stated |
| Listed dimensions | H 7.2 x L 6.5 x W 11.0 in |
| Listed weight | Field not credible; left out |
| Warranty | Limited 3-Year |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #1,385 overall; #10 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
Of the four listings that give a slot width, this one ties for the widest. The second bullet reads: “CAPACITY: Has 2 1.5-inch wide toasting slots for a wide variety of sizes”. The Hommater also states 1.5 inches; the Elite Gourmet and the Amazon Basics state 1.25. Half an inch of slot is about 38mm, by our arithmetic. For cleaning, that extra quarter inch over the 1.25-inch pair gives more room to look down into the slot and more room for loose crumbs to tumble out when the toaster is upended over a sink or a bin.
The tray is slide-out, and it shares a bullet with the shade dial. “The 7-setting shade dial gives you control over the toasting shade and the slide-out crumb tray makes clean up easy.” That is the whole cleaning statement. The listing does not say where the tray is or whether it detaches completely, though slide-out generally means a drawer you can carry. Like eight others here, it leaves the position unstated.
The warranty is the longest on the page. The listing gives a “LIMITED 3-YEAR WARRANTY” and points to the user manual for troubleshooting. The Hamilton Beach, OVENTE and Nostalgia state one year; the other six state nothing. A warranty does not make a toaster easier to clean, but it is the clearest sign on the page of how long the maker expects the mechanism to last, and a tray, carriage and lever that are emptied and worked every day are the parts most likely to wear. The listing also says the toaster is “BPA free”.
The weight field cannot be right. It gives a figure that would describe a feather, not a toaster, so we leave it out. The listed dimensions, 7.2 inches high, 6.5 inches long and 11.0 inches wide, describe a compact two-slice machine, and the listing’s own title calls it “Compact”. A toaster this size is easy to lift and invert for a shake-out, whatever it weighs. If you want something narrower still for a tight counter, our slimline toaster guide sorts the field by width.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #1,385 overall and #10 in Toasters, third on the page. The bullets list defrost and cancel, along with what the listing calls a “preheat” option, and a “high-lift carriage” that lifts small items clear, which also means fewer fingers and fewer utensils reaching into the slots for a stuck muffin. The finish is black, with no fingerprint or wipe-clean claim. For a two-slice toaster whose slots are as wide as any stated here and whose warranty is longer than any other, this is the pick.
Pros
- 1.5 in slots, the widest stated here
- Slide-out crumb tray, stated
- Limited 3-year warranty, the longest on the page
- High-lift carriage; fewer fingers in the slots
- #10 in Toasters
- Compact two-slice outline
Cons
- Tray position not stated
- Weight field not credible
- No fingerprint or wipe-clean claim
- Cool-touch not stated
- No cord storage mentioned
- Bagel function not clearly listed
Best for: A buyer who wants the widest stated slots and the longest warranty in a compact two-slice toaster.
4. Hommater 2-Slice Wide Slot Digital Toaster, S210L — Best Digital Display

A removable slide-out tray, 1.5-inch slots and cord storage, from a seller that leaves its brand out of the title.
Key Specifications
| Crumb tray | Removable, slide-out, stated |
|---|---|
| Tray position | Not stated |
| Exterior | Black; no finish claim |
| Fingerprint or wipe-clean claim | None |
| Slot width | 1.5 in, stated |
| Browning settings | 9; reheat, cancel, defrost, bagel |
| Display | LED countdown timer |
| Cord storage | Built-in, underneath |
| Listed dimensions | 13 x 5 x 7 in |
| Brand | Hommater (spec table); not in title |
| Seller | Talent Supply |
| Best Sellers Rank | #2,037 overall; #15 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
This listing uses both tray words. Its fifth bullet says the toaster “comes with a removable slide out crumb tray, help yo clean the crumb with a quick and convenient way”. The typing is rough, but the claim is clear: a drawer that slides and comes free. The Amazon Basics is the only other listing to say both. Like eight of the ten, it gives no position.
The slots match the widest stated here. The third bullet is headed “1.5 Inches Extra Wide Slots”, the same width the Cuisinart states. The same bullet then gives “13”D x 5”W x 7”H”, which reads as the toaster’s outline rather than the slot, and the spec table agrees: 13 inches long, 5 inches wide, 7 inches high. At 5 inches wide, this is the narrowest outline on the page. A long, narrow toaster is easy to tip over a sink lengthways for a shake-out, and fits a slim counter. Our 2-slice toaster roundup compares it with the other two-slice options.
Cord storage is a small cleaning point. The listing says it “has built-in cord storage underneath”. A cord that is wrapped away is a cord that is not lying across the counter collecting crumbs, and it is easier to lift the toaster to wipe underneath when the cord is not trailing. The OVENTE and the Nostalgia also mention cord storage; the other six do not.
The title leaves the brand out. The listing title reads as a list of search terms and does not name a maker. The spec table names Hommater, with part number S210L, and the seller at capture was Talent Supply, the only toaster here not sold by Amazon.com. No warranty is stated; the listing offers “24 hours quick reponse service” instead. If after-sale support matters to you, the brand and seller gap is worth weighing against the specs.
What to weigh. It ranks #2,037 overall and #15 in Toasters. It has an LED countdown display, 9 shade settings, and reheat, cancel, defrost and bagel functions, the most functions listed on the page. No weight is listed, and there is no cool-touch or exterior finish claim. On paper, it pairs the widest stated slot with a removable slide-out tray and cord storage; the trade is a brandless title and a third-party seller.
Pros
- Removable and slide-out tray, both stated
- 1.5 in slots, the widest stated here
- Built-in cord storage underneath
- Narrow 5 in outline; easy to tip and shake
- LED countdown display; 9 shade settings
- Four functions: reheat, cancel, defrost, bagel
Cons
- Tray position not stated
- Brand not in the title
- Sold by a third party, Talent Supply
- No warranty stated
- No weight listed
- No fingerprint or wipe-clean claim
Best for: A buyer who wants 1.5-inch slots, a removable slide-out tray and cord storage in a narrow outline.
5. Hamilton Beach 2 Slice Toaster, Extra-Wide Slots, Slide-Out Crumb Tray, 22794 — Best Stainless Finish

Stainless steel and a slide-out tray in the title, and no claim about fingerprints.
Key Specifications
| Crumb tray | Slide-out, stated in title and bullet |
|---|---|
| Tray position | Not stated |
| Exterior | Stainless Steel (colour field and title) |
| Fingerprint or wipe-clean claim | None |
| Slot width | Extra-wide, no figure |
| Browning settings | 7; bagel, defrost, cancel |
| Extras | Toast Boost lift; auto-shutoff |
| Listed dimensions | H 7.64 x L 11.2 x W 6.3 in |
| Listed weight | 2.98 pounds |
| Warranty | One(1) Year |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #4,030 overall; #26 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
The cleaning bullet is about the counter, not the toaster. It is headed “KEEP COUNTERTOPS CLEANER” and reads: “Conveniently remove and discard crumbs from the toaster. The slide-out crumb tray catches crumbs, so they don’t end up on your countertop.” That is an honest description of what a crumb tray does. It catches what falls, and you empty it. The title repeats “Slide-Out Crumb Tray”. The position is not given.
Stainless steel is a finish, not a cleaning promise. The colour field says “Stainless Steel”, and so does the title. Stainless resists rust and takes a damp cloth well, which is a fair reason to choose it. It also shows fingerprints and water marks on a brushed or polished face, which is why some appliances are sold with a fingerprint-resistant coating. This listing does not claim one. The general approach is to wipe along the grain with a soft, barely damp cloth once the toaster is unplugged and cold, and to keep sprays away from the slots and controls.
Toast Boost keeps fingers and forks out of the slots. “The Toast Boost feature on the bread toaster lifts smaller breads like English muffins so they’re easier to retrieve after toasting.” Anything that stops you reaching into a slot is a safety point as well as a convenience. Never use a knife or a metal utensil to free stuck bread: unplug the toaster first, and use the lift.
The slots are called extra wide without a number. “The toast slots on this stainless steel toaster are extra wide to easily fit thicker breads like Texas toast and bagels.” Four listings here give a figure; this is one of five that use the word alone. If you need a known width, the Cuisinart and the Hommater state 1.5 inches.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com, ranks #4,030 overall and #26 in Toasters, and lists 2.98 pounds. It states 7 shades, bagel, defrost and cancel, auto-shutoff, and a one-year warranty, one of three on the page that state one. The listing’s brand-claim bullet is marketing and we leave it aside. On cleaning, it offers a slide-out tray and a stainless finish, and asks you to supply the polishing cloth.
Pros
- Slide-out crumb tray, stated twice
- Stainless steel finish in title and colour field
- Toast Boost lifts small items clear
- One-year warranty stated
- 7 shades; bagel, defrost, cancel
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Tray position not stated
- No fingerprint-resistant claim for the stainless
- Slot width not stated as a figure
- Cool-touch not stated
- No cord storage mentioned
- #26 in Toasters, mid-table
Best for: A buyer who wants a stainless two-slice toaster with a slide-out tray and is happy to wipe off fingerprints.
6. OVENTE Electric 2 Slice Toaster, 6-Shade Setting, TP2210B — Best Cord Wrap

A removable tray and a cord wrap underneath, with no claim about slot width at all.
Key Specifications
| Crumb tray | Removable, stated |
|---|---|
| Tray position | Not stated |
| Exterior | “Heat-resistant housing”; black |
| Fingerprint or wipe-clean claim | None |
| Slot width | Not stated; no wide claim |
| Power | 700W |
| Browning | Shade knob; cancel by turning the knob |
| Cord storage | Integrated cord wrap underneath |
| Listed dimensions | H 6.3 x L 5.51 x W 10.24 in |
| Listed weight | 1.8 pounds |
| Warranty | 1 Year Limited |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #2,348 overall; #19 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
The cleaning bullet pairs the tray with the cord. It is headed “MESS-FREE COUNTERTOPS”: “The removable crumb tray makes it easy to clean and discard crumbs, keeping your countertop tidy. Additionally, the integrated cord wrap underneath the toaster helps manage unsightly power cords when not in use.” Removable, then, with no position and no slide-out wording. The cord wrap is one of three cord-storage claims on the page.
Heat-resistant is not the same claim as cool-touch. The listing describes “durable, heat-resistant housing”. That says the housing tolerates heat; it does not say the outside stays cool to the touch. Only the Elite Gourmet makes a cool-touch claim. For cleaning, the practical rule is the same either way: unplug the toaster and let it cool before you take the tray out or wipe it down.
It is the only toaster here that does not claim wide slots. The listing never mentions slot width, in words or numbers. Nine rivals say wide or extra wide, and four give a figure. A standard slot is fine for sliced bread, but it gives less room to look in and shake out, and thick bagels may not fit. If bagels matter, the toaster for bagels and English muffins guide guide is the better place to start.
The cancel knob is a small mechanical plus. The listing says you can “Easily cancel any toasting cycle by simply adjusting the knob; no need to push up on the lever, reducing the risk of damage”. Fewer forced levers is fewer worn carriages. It runs at 700W, the only wattage on the page other than the Amazon Basics’ 1500W, and the listing calls it “portable and lightweight”; 1.8 pounds is listed.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #2,348 overall and #19 in Toasters. It states a one-year warranty and US-based customer service. Its listed outline, 6.3 by 5.51 by 10.24 inches, is compact. On cleaning, it offers a removable tray and a cord wrap, and nothing about the slot or the finish.
Pros
- Removable crumb tray, stated
- Integrated cord wrap underneath
- Cancel by knob, no forcing the lever
- Light: 1.8 lb listed
- One-year warranty stated
- #19 in Toasters
Cons
- Tray position not stated
- No wide-slot claim of any kind
- Heat-resistant, not cool-touch
- No fingerprint or wipe-clean claim
- No bagel or defrost function listed
- 700W, the lower of two stated wattages
Best for: A dorm, office or RV that toasts sliced bread and wants a removable tray and a tidy cord.
7. Nostalgia Wide 2-Slice Toaster, 5 Browning Levels, Crumb Tray and Cord Storage, Aqua — Best Retro Colour

A tray that slides out and cord storage underneath, in a colour that hides crumbs less than black does.
Key Specifications
| Crumb tray | Slides out, stated |
|---|---|
| Tray position | Not stated |
| Exterior | Aqua; no finish claim |
| Fingerprint or wipe-clean claim | None |
| Slot width | Extra-wide, no figure |
| Browning settings | 5; lighted bagel, defrost, cancel |
| Cord storage | In the bottom of the unit |
| Listed dimensions | 7.4 D x 6.5 W x 11 H in |
| Listed weight | Not stated |
| Warranty | 1 Year Limited |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #6,568 overall; #38 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
The cleaning bullet is short. “EASY CLEAN UP: Crumb tray easily slides out so you can keep your toaster clean.” Slides out, no position, no word on whether it comes fully free. The title adds “With Crumb Tray & Cord Storage”, and the fourth bullet says the cord stores “in bottom of unit”.
It is the tallest toaster here. The size field reads “7.4”D x 6.5”W x 11”H”. At 11 inches high it stands taller than any other listing, which matters if your toaster lives under a wall cabinet: heat and crumbs rise from the slots, and a cabinet face just above a tall toaster is a surface you will be wiping. Leave clearance above it, as the general advice for any toaster goes.
Colour is a practical point. Aqua is the only bright colour on the page. A pale or bright housing shows crumbs and toast dust more readily than black, and less readily than polished stainless shows fingerprints. The listing makes no finish claim either way. If the retro look is the reason you are here, our vintage toaster roundup covers the style in more depth.
The slots are described, not measured. “The 2 large slots are perfect for toasting bagel halves and thick slices of bread”. The title says “Wide”, but no figure is given. It has 5 browning levels, the fewest on the page.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com, ranks #6,568 overall and #38 in Toasters, and states a one-year limited warranty. Lighted controls cover bagel, defrost and cancel. No weight is listed. On cleaning, it matches the field’s basics, a slide-out tray and cord storage, and adds height that is worth measuring under your cabinets.
Pros
- Crumb tray slides out, stated
- Cord storage in the bottom of the unit
- Lighted bagel, defrost and cancel
- One-year limited warranty
- Bright retro colour
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Tray position not stated
- Tallest here at 11 in; check cabinet clearance
- 5 browning levels, the fewest on the page
- Slot width not stated as a figure
- No weight listed
- No fingerprint or wipe-clean claim
Best for: A buyer who wants a retro colour, a slide-out tray and cord storage, with room above the counter.
8. bella 2 Slice Toaster, Extra Wide Slots and Removable Crumb Tray, 17608 — Best Anti-Jam

A removable tray, a matte finish with stainless accents and the only anti-jam claim on the page.
Key Specifications
| Crumb tray | Removable, stated in title and bullet |
|---|---|
| Tray position | Not stated |
| Exterior | Matte finish with stainless steel accents |
| Fingerprint or wipe-clean claim | None |
| Slot width | Extra wide, no figure |
| Browning settings | 6; reheat, cancel |
| Safety | Anti-jam; auto shut-off |
| Listed dimensions | H 9.92 x L 5.82 x W 7.2 in |
| Listed weight | 2.46 pounds |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #9,690 overall; #53 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
The cleaning claim is strong in tone and short on detail. The second bullet, “EASY TO USE AND CLEAN”, ends: “the removable crumb tray makes cleaning up an absolute breeze”. The title repeats “Removable Crumb Tray”. There is no slide-out wording and no position.
A matte finish is the one finish here that may hide fingerprints, but the listing does not say so. The fifth bullet describes “an elegant matte finish with stainless steel accents”. In general a matte surface shows smudges less than polished metal, while the stainless accents will show them as stainless does. That is general guidance about finishes, not a listing claim; the bella makes no fingerprint or wipe-clean promise.
Anti-jam is the reason to look twice. The third bullet says the toaster “features an anti-jam and auto shut-off function”. It is the only anti-jam claim on the page. A jammed slice is the moment people are tempted to reach in with a knife, which is exactly what the general safety advice says never to do. A toaster that is designed to stop when bread sticks takes some of that temptation away.
The outline is tall and narrow. The listed height is 9.92 inches, the second tallest here after the Nostalgia, on a 5.82 by 7.2 inch base. The “high lift lever provides comfy access to smaller breads”, and the bullets mention “auto-centering guides” and 6 browning options.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #9,690 overall and #53 in Toasters, the lowest ranks on the page. It lists 2.46 pounds and no warranty. Slots are described as extra wide with no figure. On cleaning, it offers a removable tray and a matte body; the anti-jam claim is what sets it apart.
Pros
- Removable crumb tray, stated twice
- Only anti-jam claim on the page
- Matte finish with stainless accents
- Auto shut-off; reheat and cancel
- High-lift lever
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Tray position not stated
- Lowest rank on the page: #53 in Toasters
- No fingerprint claim for the matte or the stainless
- Slot width not stated as a figure
- No warranty stated
- Tall at 9.92 in listed
Best for: A buyer who wants a removable tray and an anti-jam mechanism in a matte two-slice toaster.
9. Oster 4 Slice Toaster, Extra Wide Slots, Removable Easy-to-Clean Crumb Tray — Best Stainless 4-Slice

The only listing with “Easy-to-Clean” in its title, and a colour field that disagrees with that title.
Key Specifications
| Crumb tray | Removable, “Easy-to-Clean” (title) |
|---|---|
| Tray position | Not stated |
| Exterior | Stainless Steel (title, bullet); colour field “Oat” |
| Fingerprint or wipe-clean claim | None |
| Slot width | Extra-wide, no figure |
| Slices | 4 |
| Browning settings | 7; bagel, defrost, cancel |
| Safety | Automatic shut-off |
| Listed dimensions | H 9.2 x L 13.5 x W 12.7 in |
| Listed weight | Not stated |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #4,499 overall; #28 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
It is the one title on the page that puts cleaning in the name. “Removable Easy-to-Clean Crumb Tray”, the title says, and the third bullet repeats it: “the removable crumb tray makes cleanup easy”. So the “easy-to-clean” is attached to the tray, not to the toaster, which is the pattern of the whole page. No position is given.
Two fields disagree about the finish. The title ends “Stainless Steel” and the sixth bullet says “Sleek stainless steel enhances the look of any kitchen”. The colour field says “Oat”. We report both. It may be that the listing covers more than one colour, or that a painted model shares the page. Check which finish you are ordering, because a stainless face and an oat-coloured one clean, and show marks, differently.
It is the largest toaster on the page. The listed outline is 9.2 inches high, 13.5 inches long and 12.7 inches wide. No weight is listed. A four-slice toaster of that size is not one you invert over a sink casually, which makes the removable tray the main route for crumbs. Whether four slots feed one tray or two is not stated.
Against the Amazon Basics, it says less. Both are four-slice, both have 7 shades, bagel, defrost and cancel, and both describe a removable tray. The Amazon Basics also states a rear position, a 5.25 by 1.25 inch slot and 1500W. The Oster states none of those. It ranks #4,499 overall and #28 in Toasters against the Amazon Basics’ #242 and #4.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com, states automatic shut-off and a high-lift lever, and gives no warranty. The slots are “Extra-wide” with no figure. If you want a stainless four-slice with a removable tray, confirm the finish first.
Pros
- “Easy-to-Clean” removable tray in the title
- Stainless steel stated in title and bullet
- Four slices; 7 shades
- Bagel, defrost and cancel
- High-lift lever; automatic shut-off
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Colour field says “Oat”, title says stainless
- Tray position not stated
- Largest outline here: 13.5 x 12.7 in listed
- No weight listed
- No warranty stated
- Slot width not stated as a figure
Best for: A four-slice household that wants a stainless toaster and will check the finish before ordering.
10. BLACK+DECKER 2-Slice Toaster, Extra-Wide Slots, Baked Stone, TR7827-1YD — Drop-Down Tray Pick

The only tray on the page that drops down rather than slides or lifts out.
Key Specifications
| Crumb tray | Drop-down, stated |
|---|---|
| Tray position | Underneath (drop-down); not otherwise stated |
| Exterior | Baked Stone; no finish claim |
| Fingerprint or wipe-clean claim | None |
| Slot width | Extra-wide, no figure |
| Browning settings | 7; bagel, frozen, cancel |
| Lever | High-lift |
| Listed dimensions | H 7.0 x L 11.0 x W 6.5 in |
| Listed weight | 1.9 pounds |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #4,545 overall; #29 in Toasters |
Why We Recommend It
This is the odd one out, and it is worth understanding why. The fifth bullet reads: “Drop-Down Crumb Tray: Enjoy mess-free toasting and effortless cleanup.” Every other listing describes a tray that is removable or slides out. A drop-down tray is a flap in the base that swings open. You empty it by holding the toaster over the bin or sink and opening the flap, rather than carrying a drawer away. The listing does not say whether the flap also detaches.
A drop-down tray has one advantage and one drawback. The advantage is that it cannot be lost or left out, and there is no drawer edge to catch on. The drawback is that you lift the whole toaster to empty it, every time. At 1.9 pounds listed it is light, so that is not hard, but it means unplugging and moving the toaster rather than sliding a tray out where it stands. With a slide-out tray you can, in principle, check how full it is at a glance; with a flap you open it to find out.
The high-lift lever addresses the other cleaning hazard. “High-Lift Lever: Easily remove toasted foods from the slots without burning your fingers.” Stuck food is the main reason people reach into a toaster. A lever that lifts the food clear keeps fingers and utensils out of the slots.
The slots are described, not measured. “Extra-Wide Slots & Self-Adjusting Guides: Fits most thicker artisan breads and bagels with ease”. No figure is given. The spec table’s size field reads “Extra Wide”, which is a description rather than a dimension.
What to weigh. It is sold by Amazon.com and ranks #4,545 overall and #29 in Toasters. It has 7 shades, illuminated buttons for bagel, frozen and cancel, and a “Baked Stone” colour. No warranty is stated. Choose it if you prefer a flap you cannot misplace over a drawer you can carry.
Pros
- Drop-down tray cannot be lost or left out
- High-lift lever keeps fingers out of the slots
- Light: 1.9 lb listed, easy to lift over the bin
- 7 shades; bagel, frozen, cancel
- Illuminated buttons
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Only tray not described as removable or slide-out
- Toaster must be lifted to empty it
- Detachable flap not stated
- Slot width not stated as a figure
- No warranty stated
- No fingerprint or wipe-clean claim
Best for: A buyer who would rather tip a light toaster over the bin than carry a loose tray.
Ten Trays, One Address
The crumb tray is where every one of these listings puts its cleaning claim, so it is worth reading the ten tray descriptions side by side. The table below gives each listing’s own words, the kind of tray they describe, and the position where one is given.
| Toaster | Tray words in the listing | Type | Position stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elite Gourmet | “slide-out crumb tray catches debris” | Slide-out | No |
| Amazon Basics 4 Slice | “Removable Crumb Tray”; “rear crumb tray slides out” | Removable, slide-out | Rear |
| Cuisinart Compact | “the slide-out crumb tray makes clean up easy” | Slide-out | No |
| Hommater | “removable slide out crumb tray” | Removable, slide-out | No |
| Hamilton Beach | “Slide-Out Crumb Tray” | Slide-out | No |
| OVENTE | “removable crumb tray” | Removable | No |
| Nostalgia | “Crumb tray easily slides out” | Slide-out | No |
| bella | “Removable Crumb Tray” | Removable | No |
| Oster 4 Slice | “Removable Easy-to-Clean Crumb Tray” | Removable | No |
| BLACK+DECKER | “Drop-Down Crumb Tray” | Drop-down flap | Implied underneath |
The count is simple. Ten of ten have a tray. Nine describe one that is removable, slides out, or both. One drops down. One states a position, and it is the rear. None says front.
Why position matters. A front tray can be pulled with the toaster in place, which is why people who keep a toaster against a wall prefer one. A rear tray means turning the toaster round or reaching behind it. A side tray sits somewhere in between. The listings’ photographs may show you, but photographs are not a statement, and nine sellers have chosen not to put it in words. If it matters to your counter, ask before you buy, or look for the tray in the photograph from more than one angle.
Why removable versus slide-out is not quite a distinction. In practice, most slide-out trays are also removable, and most removable trays slide. The Amazon Basics and the Hommater say both, which is the clearest wording. The listings that say only removable, the OVENTE, the bella and the Oster, leave you to assume it slides; the ones that say only slide-out, the Elite Gourmet, Cuisinart, Hamilton Beach and Nostalgia, leave you to assume it comes fully free. The real outlier is the drop-down flap.
No listing gives a tray size or capacity. A long, shallow tray catches crumbs from end to end; a short one leaves the corners of the base to collect them. Not one of the ten says how big its tray is, how deep, or whether it spans the full length of the slots. On the four-slice toasters, neither says whether there is one tray or two.

The Outside Gets No Promises
If you came here for an easy clean toaster because the last one showed every fingerprint, the listings do not help much. We looked for any claim that the housing is fingerprint-resistant, smudge-resistant or wipe-clean. There were none.
| Toaster | Finish as stated | Fingerprint or wipe-clean claim | Cool-touch | Cord storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elite Gourmet | Black | None (tray: “wipe-away cleaning”) | Yes, stated | Not stated |
| Amazon Basics 4 Slice | Black & Silver | None | Not stated | Not stated |
| Cuisinart Compact | Black | None | Not stated | Not stated |
| Hommater | Black | None | Not stated | Yes, underneath |
| Hamilton Beach | Stainless Steel | None | Not stated | Not stated |
| OVENTE | Black, “heat-resistant housing” | None | Not stated | Yes, cord wrap underneath |
| Nostalgia | Aqua | None | Not stated | Yes, in the bottom |
| bella | Matte with stainless steel accents | None | Not stated | Not stated |
| Oster 4 Slice | Stainless Steel (title); “Oat” (colour field) | None | Not stated | Not stated |
| BLACK+DECKER | Baked Stone | None | Not stated | Not stated |
Zero fingerprint claims, one cool-touch claim, three cord-storage claims. Two toasters lead with stainless steel, the Hamilton Beach and the Oster, though the Oster’s colour field disagrees. One, the bella, is matte with stainless accents. The rest are painted or plastic finishes in black, black and silver, aqua and stone.
What each finish means for cleaning, in general terms. Brushed or polished stainless resists rust and wipes well, but shows fingerprints and water marks unless it carries a coating that the listing would usually mention. Matte finishes tend to hide smudges better but can hold grease in their texture. Gloss painted finishes show crumbs and dust; bright colours like aqua show them more than black. None of this is in the listings. It is general guidance on surfaces, and it is the reason to decide what you are willing to wipe before you choose a colour.
Cool-touch is a cleaning feature as well as a safety one. The Elite Gourmet is the only listing that claims a cool-touch exterior. A cooler shell is easier to steady while you slide a tray out, and less likely to bake on a splash of butter or jam. The OVENTE’s “heat-resistant housing” is a different claim: it says the housing copes with heat, not that it stays cool. Either way, the safe routine does not change: unplug, let it cool, then clean.
Slot Width and the Shake-Out
A crumb tray catches what falls. Some crumbs do not fall: they lodge on the grille, the guides or the elements. The general way to clear them is to unplug the toaster, let it cool fully, take out the tray, and turn the toaster upside down over a sink or bin and give it a gentle shake. A wider slot makes that easier, because there is more room for crumbs to fall clear and more room to see what is left.
| Toaster | Slot width as stated | Slot width in mm (our arithmetic) | Slices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cuisinart Compact | 1.5 in | About 38 | 2 |
| Hommater | 1.5 in | About 38 | 2 |
| Elite Gourmet | 1.25 in | About 32 | 2 |
| Amazon Basics 4 Slice | 5.25 x 1.25 in | About 32 wide | 4 |
| Hamilton Beach | “Extra wide” | — | 2 |
| Nostalgia | “Extra-wide”, “large slots” | — | 2 |
| bella | “Extra Wide” | — | 2 |
| Oster 4 Slice | “Extra-wide” | — | 4 |
| BLACK+DECKER | “Extra-Wide” | — | 2 |
| OVENTE | Not mentioned | — | 2 |
Four give a number, five give a word, one gives nothing. The stated figures are 1.25 and 1.5 inches, a quarter of an inch apart. The five that say wide without a number may well fall in the same range, but the listings do not say. Our extra wide toaster roundup goes further into what extra wide means across the wider market.
The lift matters as much as the slot. Five listings mention a lift feature: the Hamilton Beach’s Toast Boost, and the high-lift levers or carriages on the Cuisinart, bella, Oster and BLACK+DECKER. A lift that raises small items clear of the slot is the best defence against the habit that causes most toaster accidents: reaching in with a knife or fork. Never do that with a toaster plugged in, and preferably not at all.
Why No Toaster Is Crumb-Free
People search for the best toaster with no crumbs, and it is worth being plain about it: there is no such toaster. Bread sheds as its surface dries and browns. Seeds, crust and sugar fall from the slice onto the elements and the base. Every pop-up toaster, at any level of the market, makes crumbs. What separates them is how easy it is to get those crumbs out.
On that measure, the listings differ in three ways. First, how the tray leaves the toaster: removable, slide-out, both, or a drop-down flap. Second, where it is: stated once, at the rear, and left to the photographs on the other nine. Third, how big it is: never stated. Slot width and lift features help with the crumbs that do not fall, and cool-touch helps you handle the toaster while you clean it.
A full crumb tray is a fire risk, not just a mess. As general guidance, crumbs that build up in a tray or on the base can char each time the toaster runs, and in the worst case catch fire. Smoke from a toaster that has not been used for something unusual is a sign the tray needs emptying. How often depends on how much you toast and what: seeded, sugary and crumbly breads shed more. Once a week is a common rule for daily toasting, and more often for heavy use. Whatever the listing says about easy cleaning, the tray only helps if you empty it.
The general cleaning routine, for any toaster here. Unplug it. Let it cool completely. Slide out or open the tray and empty it into the bin. Wash the tray if it is removable and the manual allows, and dry it fully before it goes back. Turn the toaster upside down over the sink and shake gently. Wipe the outside with a soft, barely damp cloth. Never put water, sprays or a metal object into the slots, and never immerse the toaster. Check the manual for anything specific to your model, because none of these listings gives its own cleaning instructions beyond the tray.

Best Alternatives
| Alternative | Why Consider It | Better For | Main Trade-Off |
|---|---|---|---|
| A toaster oven; see our toaster oven broiler guide | Crumb tray plus a removable rack and pan you can wash | Toast, reheating and small bakes | More surfaces to clean inside |
| An extra wide slot toaster; see our extra wide toaster roundup | Wider slots shake out more easily | Bagels and thick bread | Not all state a figure either |
| A slimline toaster; see our slimline toaster guide | A narrow outline is easy to lift and invert | Tight counters | Often two long slots instead of two short ones |
| A stovetop or grill-pan toast | No slots, no tray, nothing hidden | Occasional toast | Needs watching; pan to wash every time |
What the Step Up Buys
The basics — OVENTE, bella, Nostalgia, BLACK+DECKER. A tray, removable, slide-out or drop-down, and slots described in words or not at all. The OVENTE and the Nostalgia add cord storage, the bella adds anti-jam, the BLACK+DECKER adds a high-lift lever. None states a slot width, a tray position or a cool-touch shell.
The stated slot — Elite Gourmet, Cuisinart, Hommater. Stepping up here buys a number. The Elite Gourmet adds the only cool-touch exterior and the best rank on the page. The Cuisinart adds 1.5-inch slots and a 3-year warranty. The Hommater adds 1.5 inches, a removable slide-out tray, cord storage and a display, from a third-party seller.
The stainless finish — Hamilton Beach, Oster. A stainless face that wipes clean and shows fingerprints, with no coating claimed. The Hamilton Beach adds a one-year warranty and Toast Boost. The Oster adds four slots and an “Easy-to-Clean” tray in the title, and a colour field that says oat.
The stated position — Amazon Basics 4 Slice. The only step up that tells you where the tray is: the rear. With it comes the only full slot size, 5.25 by 1.25 inches, and 1500W. It is the step to take if knowing the tray position matters more than having it at the front.

What to Check Before You Buy
Find the Crumb Tray in the Photographs
Nine of ten listings do not say where the tray is. Look at every photograph, including the back and the underside, for the tray handle or flap. A front tray suits a toaster kept against the wall; a rear tray means turning it round. If the photographs do not show it, ask the seller before you buy.
Read Removable, Slide-Out and Drop-Down as Different Words
Most removable trays slide, and most slide-out trays come free, but the listings that say both are the clearest. A drop-down flap is a different design: you lift the whole toaster over the bin to empty it. Decide which routine you will actually keep up.
Ask Whether a Four-Slice Has One Tray or Two
Neither four-slice listing here says. Two trays are two things to empty; one long tray needs carrying level. On a large toaster that is awkward to invert, the tray does most of the cleaning, so it is worth knowing.
Treat Stainless as a Finish, Not a Promise
No listing here claims a fingerprint-resistant coating. Stainless steel wipes clean and shows marks. Matte finishes hide smudges better; bright colours show crumbs more. Choose the surface you are willing to wipe.
Check for Cool-Touch if You Clean Straight After Toasting
One listing claims a cool-touch exterior. Even then, the general rule is to unplug and let the toaster cool before you take the tray out. Heat-resistant housing is not the same claim as cool-touch.
Prefer a Stated Slot Width
Four listings give a figure: 1.25 or 1.5 inches. Wider slots are easier to look into and shake out, and they take bagels. If a listing only says wide, ask for the number.
Plan to Empty the Tray Regularly
No tray stops crumbs being made, and a full tray is a fire risk. Empty it weekly for daily use, more often for seeded or sugary breads, and any time the toaster smells of burning when nothing unusual went in.
Common Mistakes
- Expecting a crumb-free toaster. None exists; all ten here rely on a tray, and the tray only works if you empty it.
- Assuming the tray pulls from the front. Nine of ten listings do not say, and the one that does says rear.
- Reading “easy clean” as an exterior claim. On all ten listings the cleaning claim is about the tray; zero promise a fingerprint-resistant or wipe-clean shell.
- Letting the tray fill up. Built-up crumbs char with every cycle and are a fire risk; weekly emptying is a common rule for daily toasting.
- Cleaning a hot or plugged-in toaster. Unplug and wait, even on the one toaster here that claims a cool-touch exterior.
- Freeing stuck bread with a knife or fork. Never put metal in the slots; five listings here offer a lift feature for that job.
- Putting water or spray into the slots. Wash only a removable tray, dry it fully, and wipe the outside with a barely damp cloth.
Who Should Buy Which
Buy the Elite Gourmet Cool-Touch if you want the most complete set of cleaning claims on the page. A slide-out tray, the only cool-touch exterior and stated 1.25-inch slots, with the best rank here, #2 in Toasters. Accept that the tray position and warranty are not stated.
Buy the Amazon Basics 4 Slice if you need four slots and want to know where the tray is. It is the only listing that states a position, rear, and the only one with a full slot size. Plan to turn it round to empty it.
Buy the Cuisinart Compact if you want the widest stated slots and the longest warranty. 1.5-inch slots, a slide-out tray and a limited 3-year warranty in a compact two-slice body.
Buy the Hommater if you want 1.5-inch slots, cord storage and a countdown display. Its tray is stated as both removable and slide-out. Weigh the brandless title and third-party seller.
Buy the Hamilton Beach if you want stainless steel and do not mind polishing it. A slide-out tray, Toast Boost and a one-year warranty, with no fingerprint claim.
Buy the OVENTE if you toast sliced bread in a small space. A removable tray and a cord wrap, with no wide-slot claim of any kind.
Buy the Nostalgia if the colour matters and there is room above it. At 11 inches it is the tallest here, with a slide-out tray and cord storage.
Buy the bella if jams are your worry. It is the only anti-jam claim on the page, with a removable tray and a matte finish.
Buy the Oster 4 Slice if you want a stainless four-slice and will confirm the finish. Its title says stainless; its colour field says oat.
Buy the BLACK+DECKER if you prefer a flap you cannot lose. The drop-down tray is unique here, and at 1.9 pounds the toaster is light enough to lift over the bin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a toaster that does not make crumbs?
No. Every pop-up toaster makes crumbs, because bread sheds as its surface dries and browns, and seeds, crust and sugar fall from the slice onto the elements and base. A search for the best toaster with no crumbs is really a search for a toaster whose crumbs are easy to get out. All ten toasters in this roundup have a crumb tray. Nine describe it as removable, slide-out or both, and one, the BLACK+DECKER, uses a drop-down flap. What the listings let you compare is how the tray leaves the toaster and, in one case, where it sits. None of them states how large its tray is. Beyond the tray, wider slots make it easier to shake out crumbs that lodge inside, and a lift feature saves reaching in for small items. The tray only keeps crumbs off the counter if it is emptied regularly.
Is a front or rear crumb tray easier to clean?
A front tray is usually easier, because you can pull it out without moving the toaster, which suits a toaster kept against a wall or under a cabinet. A rear tray keeps the front looking tidy but means turning the toaster round or reaching behind it each time you empty it. In this roundup, only the Amazon Basics 4 Slice states a position, and it is the rear: its listing says the rear crumb tray slides out. The other nine do not say front, back or side in words, so check the photographs from every angle, including the back and underside, or ask the seller. The BLACK+DECKER uses a drop-down flap in the base, which you empty by lifting the toaster over a bin. On a heavy toaster the position matters more, since turning a large four-slice round every day is more of a chore than turning a light two-slice.
How often should I empty a toaster crumb tray?
As general guidance, empty it about once a week if you toast daily, and more often if you toast a lot, or toast seeded, sugary or crumbly breads that shed more. None of the ten listings here gives a schedule, so the manual for your model is the authority. The reason to keep at it is safety as well as tidiness. Crumbs that build up in the tray or on the base can char each time the toaster runs, and in the worst case catch fire. A burning smell or smoke when nothing unusual went in is a sign the tray needs emptying. Always unplug the toaster and let it cool before you slide the tray out. If the tray is removable and the manual allows it, wash it in warm soapy water and dry it fully before you put it back. Do not run the toaster with the tray missing.
How do I clean the inside of a toaster safely?
Unplug it first and let it cool completely. Remove or open the crumb tray and empty it. Then turn the toaster upside down over a sink or bin and shake it gently, which frees crumbs lodged on the grille and guides. Wider slots make this easier, which is one reason slot width matters for cleaning. A soft, dry pastry brush can reach crumbs near the opening. Never put water, cleaning spray or a metal object such as a knife or fork into the slots, and never immerse the toaster. If bread is stuck, unplug the toaster and use the lift lever; five of the listings here mention a lift or high-lift feature, and the bella states an anti-jam function. This is general guidance for pop-up toasters. None of the ten listings gives its own cleaning instructions beyond the crumb tray, so follow your manual where it differs.
Do stainless steel toasters show fingerprints?
Generally, yes. Brushed or polished stainless steel resists rust and wipes clean well, but it shows fingerprints, smudges and water marks unless it has a fingerprint-resistant coating, which a listing would normally mention. None of the ten listings in this roundup claims a fingerprint-resistant, smudge-resistant or wipe-clean exterior. Two lead with stainless steel: the Hamilton Beach, whose colour field reads Stainless Steel, and the Oster 4 Slice, whose title says stainless while its colour field says Oat. The bella describes a matte finish with stainless steel accents. As general guidance, matte finishes hide smudges better than polished metal, while bright colours such as the Nostalgia aqua show crumbs and dust more than black. To clean a stainless toaster, unplug it, let it cool and wipe along the grain with a soft, barely damp cloth, keeping sprays well away from the slots and controls.
What does cool-touch have to do with cleaning?
A cool-touch exterior is a safety feature first, but it helps with cleaning too. A housing that stays cooler is easier to steady with one hand while you slide the tray out with the other, and spills such as butter or jam are less likely to bake onto it. In this roundup, only the Elite Gourmet claims a cool-touch exterior. The OVENTE describes a heat-resistant housing, which is a different claim: it says the housing tolerates heat, not that it stays cool to the touch. The other eight make no claim about housing temperature. Whatever the listing says, the general rule does not change. Unplug the toaster and let it cool before emptying the tray or wiping it down, because the tray, the crumbs and the area around the slots can stay hot after a cycle even when the sides feel cool.
Do wide slots make a toaster easier to clean?
They help. A wider slot gives more room to look down at the elements and guides, and more room for loose crumbs to fall clear when you turn the toaster upside down over a sink or bin. Four listings in this roundup give a figure: the Cuisinart Compact and the Hommater state 1.5 inches, and the Elite Gourmet and the Amazon Basics 4 Slice state 1.25 inches, the Amazon Basics giving its full slot size as 5.25 by 1.25 inches. Five more say wide or extra wide without a number, and the OVENTE does not mention slot width at all. Wide slots also take bagels and thick bread without jamming, and a jammed slice is the moment people are tempted to reach in with a knife. Never use metal in the slots; unplug and use the lift lever instead.
Is a drop-down crumb tray worse than a removable one?
Not worse, but different. A drop-down crumb tray is a flap in the base that swings open. You empty it by holding the toaster over a bin or sink and opening the flap, so you lift the whole toaster each time. A removable or slide-out tray is a drawer you take out and carry to the bin, leaving the toaster where it stands. The drop-down design cannot be lost or left out, and there is no drawer edge to catch. The removable design is easier to check at a glance and, where the manual allows, to wash. In this roundup, the BLACK+DECKER is the only toaster with a drop-down tray; its listing does not say whether the flap also detaches. At a listed 1.9 pounds, it is light enough that lifting it is not a burden. Whichever type you choose, unplug and cool the toaster first.
Final Verdict
Slide-out tray, the only cool-touch exterior and 1.25 in slots, with the best rank here: #2 in Toasters.
The only stated tray position, rear, plus a full 5.25 x 1.25 in slot size and #4 in Toasters.
Slide-out tray, 1.5 in slots, the widest stated here, and the longest warranty: limited 3-year.
Every easy clean toaster here is easy to clean in the same place: the crumb tray. All ten have one. Nine describe it as removable, slide-out or both, and one drops down. The listings sell the tray, and on the subject of the rest of the toaster they say almost nothing.
The detail that would help most is the one least often printed. Only the Amazon Basics says where its tray is, and it is the rear. Not one listing gives a tray size. Not one promises a fingerprint-resistant or wipe-clean exterior. One claims a cool-touch shell, and four give a slot width.
So shop by access, not by the phrase. Find the tray in the photographs and decide whether you can reach it where your toaster lives. Prefer a stated slot width for shaking out what the tray misses. Choose a finish you are willing to wipe. And whichever you buy, unplug it, let it cool, keep metal and water out of the slots, and empty the tray before it fills, because no toaster is crumb-free and a full tray is a fire risk.
If you buy one toaster from this page, make it the Elite Gourmet 2-Slice Cool-Touch: a slide-out tray, the only cool-touch exterior here, stated 1.25-inch slots and the best rank of the ten. If you need four slots, the Amazon Basics is the only listing that tells you where the tray is; if you want the widest stated slots and the longest warranty, the Cuisinart Compact is the one.
